This watch (245 music) changed my life. It got me back into running at age 52. A month later, I gave up drinking. Then I gave up eating meat. Lost 10 per cent of my body weight in the process, and my wife loves it. Last week, I ran a 5k in under 21 minutes and am now training for a sub-20 in six weeks. Thanks to this watch, I’m now confident I can run a sub-40 10k by the end of this year. Life is good. Thanks, Garmin.
Nice Review! The different satellite call out was clutch! I noticed this when I purchased the watch and thought I was the only one who paid attention to this because I used to work on Satellites. Been going 6 months strong with the watch minus the setup for music, I have enjoyed this watch a lot.

Great review, I just bought this watch. Also we're apparently neighbors. I bike by this track daily to work! Have run a few repeats there as well. See you on the bos trails!
Awesome! Neighbors indeed. If you bike by the track, then you probably also unknowingly bike by the office too. :) I bike past the track each day to/from home/work. It's a great little area. Say Hi if ya see me out there!
So if you plan to rely on the safety/incident detection features, there's absolutely no reason to buy the "Music" version, because you'll always need to have your phone with you anyway, which will already have a much better and more used music system that you're more accustomed to anyway.
Not really. It's probably more useful for, as DC said, biking accidents or the like, in which case you should keep your phone anyways for all kinds of safety reasons. Thank you so much for all the content you give!!! I was wondering...Fenix 5 is on sale now. In your opinion, should I go with the 245 & the newer tech, or would the (older) Fenix 5 still be better? (FYI: I’ve used the 235 for a few years now)
Ah! This video review is so, so, so helpful. Thanks Ray. I do however find the speed of talking quite fast, if you drop it to 0.9x playback it is perfect!
The biggest is that 645 adds Barometric altimeter, thermometer, and Garmin Pay. Otherwise the 245 benefits from being launched a year and a bit after the 645 with a slightly better battery life, some new features that came out on devices since then, and a new gen version of the HR with PulseOx and new (Sony) GPS Chipset - which is half of the equation for the battery life improvement... You can still get some barometric data when running from using the GPS but the more minor variances may not be accounted for and more significantly you obviously wont be able to get data for things like stairs climbed etc. Regardless for an overall all round running watch at a reasonable budget I prefer the 245 over the 645. I would like my altimeter for getting info on stairs etc but it's not the end of the world to me...

Great review Ray as always. Can music be played when not using it to record an activity? Say doing chores around the house with the watch on and BT headphones in? Or maybe podcasts whilst I walk to work (no recording of an activity)?
Yup, no problem playing music/podcasts (even the FIT File Podcast) whenever you want. Just press the up or down button a few times and the music widget will come around.
Just picked up one of these ...after wearing a Fenix3HR for so long im surprised at how small and compact this 245M is, gotten used to the feeling of the weight and solidity of a Fenix.

So if Garmin is using the same Sony GPS chipset in its 2019 watches, does this mean that they all have the same, or similar accuracy? I'm contemplating if this or the 45 would be a worthwhile upgrade from my original Vivoactive. Thanks for the videos and great reviews!
I bought a 245 music from a friend ~8 months ago and love it. One feature I've not been able to find is the STAIR CLIMB. Perhaps you mention it in your review, but is there any easy way to turn it on? I've looked at several different websites with no success. TIA.
Hey question I'm working out and my coach recommends to buy a sports watch that measures my rest, sleep, stress and heart rate. She recommend the Polar brand special de Ignite is this something you would also recommend? I also came across the Polar vintage m, Polar vintage v, Samsung active 2 and the Garmin 245 what would you recommend?
I would either go with polar or garmin they do this stuff well but i prefer garmin just cause i have never had issues. Id do the the 245 personally. I am a runner and tech junkie myself :)
Great video. Was curious as to your thoughts on whether the 935 would be a better purchase than the 245? Where I live the 935 is the same price. Thanks
If you are willing to manually copy the MP3 file to the watch then yes. The other option is the podcast app available for the watch, but the cost of that app is $5/mo.
@@emr215 Thanks! I am assuming with the podcast app, you still have to have your phone with you? That kind of defeats the purpose of having things on board, so I don't have to carry my phone with me when I run.
I’m thinking of buying the fenix6 X pro solar edition. I’m just worried about the hardness of the glass versus sapphire. I think sapphire is rated 9 and diamond 10. Where does the power glassTM sit in the scale of things. Thank you.
Hey, I’ve had 4 data screens on my 235 for at least a few months (only used 3 screens up until then so can’t tell you how long it’s been a feature for).
I also have 4 data field in my forerunner 230... That been said I can only have 2 data screens per profile and no more than that. I was wondering if at the new 245 you can have more than 2 data screens.
Looking to try a more sport orientated watch over my AW3 and I love this compact form factor. Didn't want to risk Garmin's initial foray into music (645j. This looks great, but, no nfc payment, I'm so used to Apple pay and never take my card out anymore. 'Headphone compatibility', Apple airpods not on list, my airpods work flawlessly with my AW, as far as I can see they are the only non 'in-ear' BT headphones around (I have music low so not to completely dull one of my senses). No Open Water Swimming, ok, I kind of get that but it doesn't make a case against the AW which has it (very good tracking by the way). The firstbeat stuff I do find interesting but not sure it is worth the trade.
Fwiw, so far so good on AirPods V2 and my 945 (I just got AirPods Thursday though, but I can wander super far from watch left on desk and it’s good). Going to try older devices to see if it breaks those in same scenarios.
For incident detection, at a track, is the Bluetooth connection strong enough to reach from the starting area, where you’d likely leave your phone, to the far side of the track?
Hi Thanks for the great video on the FR 245. I'm thinking of buying this model but have a question you may be able to answer.... When you sync a pair of earbuds with this watch (or any sports watch for that matter) can you use them to listen to running info? I'm after a watch which can. give me audio cues for heart rate alerts, pace alerts and interval training alerts - through the earbuds. Do you know if this watch can provide the above?
I have a question. How long will the downloaded playlists from spotify stay on your watch. For example, what if I cancel my subscription for a month, will the playlist stay on there?
It's reasonably accurate. I dive into all of the GPS accuracy comparisons in the full review: www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-245-music-gps-watch-in-depth-review.html
@@GilesLevy I have read elsewhere that the screen is improved, although he didn't mention that in this review. For me, that would be enough to make me upgrade my 235, even though I have only had it a year. There's no point having all these fancy metrics if you can see them :)
@@GilesLevy yeah. And also the bezel around the display is thinner compared to the 235 WHR. That's what I hate most about the 235. The bezel is too thick. I've set the display brightness to the lowest possible level on my 235 WHR to save battery.
@@andrews882 and Gabriel Gattringer thank you for the replies, I also saw there are more data pages, so if it's not way better with ~50% more pixels, I will just use more pages with only two metrics on each.
It seems orienteering and mountain biking is missing from sport profiles. Can you create a custom or rename default? Does they show up in Connect reports also? Can I import custom routes and use 245 as a navigator?
Hi Does anyone notice the different between this new heart rate sensor and the previous one? For me , it seems that the garmin instinct or forunner 645 Give me jump around number which spiking up or down. For example drop to 40 from 65 or jump up to 120 when I just do simple move like go upstairs or laying down to bed. And the new forunner 245 didn’t do that and also polar ignite seems to be accord with 245 and smoother. At this point I think polar ignite heart rate tracking is great the only issue is I can not find a 4 hours heart rate view Any comments ?
I love the garmin watches I have had (VA3 and FR45) but the vibration is too weak to wake me up. Is there a Garmin out there that has a strong vibration alarm?

Does the Trainingload also sync to Garmin Connect, hence taking the trainingload recorded via f.e. an Edge into account?
Came to ask this as well
Any watches work with UA-cam music yet??
It says the Forerunner battery life is up to 7 days in Smart watch mode. does this include heart rate monitor setting on?
Yes
Who measures their pulse on the bus?
Ah, interesting! Thanks for the info
Can you download music from Apple Music? I don’t have a Spotify account.
For incident detection, at a track, is the Bluetooth connection strong enough to reach from the starting area, where you’d likely leave your phone, to the far side of the track?
if you are thinking from the 200m mark to the start then no it won't work that is to far! Hope this helps
Hi
Thanks for the great video on the FR 245.
Does it have lactic threshold?
No, but it does do race time predictions.
I have a question. How long will the downloaded playlists from spotify stay on your watch. For example, what if I cancel my subscription for a month, will the playlist stay on there?
Is the Garmin have accurate GPS tracker
It's reasonably accurate. I dive into all of the GPS accuracy comparisons in the full review: www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-245-music-gps-watch-in-depth-review.html
Why is there some creepy mad scientist with the hood on in the background???
The reality is even better than your assumption...waiting for a Dutch person to chime in. ;)
I spent most of the video watching the creepy dude waiting for him to move
Apparently it is a piece of public art! Pretty hard to find something that explains it better, it is a man taking an illigal wee (wildplasser)...
Roy de Wild Wonder if it has anything to do with the Manneken Pis statue in Brussels

Very interesting review! My Forerunner 235 is almost 3 years old now. Is the 245 worth upgrading to?
I use the 235 does everything I need it to so won't be "upgrading"
One plus that I'm considering (I have the 230) is that this has a sharper (possibly brighter) screen, also the virtual partner feature may be cool
@@andrews882 and Gabriel Gattringer thank you for the replies,
I also saw there are more data pages, so if it's not way better with ~50% more pixels, I will just use more pages with only two metrics on each.
Do I retire my FR 305 for this?!?!
The pictures I've seen of the 245 map display don't seem to show your current speed or pace. Is it possible to add that data field to the map?
Eh, what's the great difference between this here and the 645? And what about the Garmin Instinct?
It's "not sponsored" only if you paid full retail price for it with your own money.
I do pay for it with my money? I don't keep any media loaner products, they all go back to the companies. That's the way I wok.
Hi do you think I should upgrade from the fenix 3hr. I am now training for my first marathon.
Cool, how did you like running in Amsterdam?
It seems orienteering and mountain biking is missing from sport profiles. Can you create a custom or rename default? Does they show up in Connect reports also?
Can I import custom routes and use 245 as a navigator?
Hi
Does anyone notice the different between this new heart rate sensor and the previous one?
For me , it seems that the garmin instinct or forunner 645
Give me jump around number which spiking up or down. For example drop to 40 from 65 or jump up to 120 when I just do simple move like go upstairs or laying down to bed.
And the new forunner 245 didn’t do that and also polar ignite seems to be accord with 245 and smoother.
At this point I think polar ignite heart rate tracking is great the only issue is I can not find a 4 hours heart rate view
Any comments ?
Any change in the screen performance/color?
Is it possible to turn off bluetooth?
I love the garmin watches I have had (VA3 and FR45) but the vibration is too weak to wake me up. Is there a Garmin out there that has a strong vibration alarm?
I have va4s and when I turn my hand it lightens up, I try to find that on fr245m but I don't know where it is, any help?
I have a doubt. If i set a distance, for example 10k. Does the watch indicate, based on my actual pace, at what time will I finish the race?
Isn't this like the 45 but with little fancy features?
bezels seems more smalls than 945, true?
Looks like it to me too. I would guess it's because the 945 has a larger battery?
