Oh boy oh boy. I have come a long way to find the perfect watch. Here is my story for who cares and who might be struggling. Yeah the struggle is real 😅. Purchased a Garmin 255s music. It was and is a fine watch but no training readiness. Something I really wanted to have. Also found that pacing was lagging quite a bit. At least my unit was. Other then that a perfectly fine watch. After that I purchased the Forerunner 965, had everything I wanted and needed but the size of the watch was way too big on my 17,5cm wrist. I found it to be completely out of proportion. The watch optically also seems even bigger due the design and bezel. Also as crazy as at seems I am not a fan of the amoled. Just don’t want that brightness in my face. It looks so popping and childish to me. Personal preference not trying to offend anyone here. Tried yhr Garmin 265s the proportions and size where okay but still that amoled was too much for me. Tried the COROS Pace 3 for a couple of days. Didn’t do it for me. And now I found the perfect watch the 955 it may sound crazy but that 1. Something millimeter in sizing makes a huge difference with the 965. This watch sits perfect on my wrist. Has all the features. Does not distract me with the amoled. It’s under the radar, rugged and also had the navigation and maps. Yeah finally got my unicorn watch 😍
I understand!! Tried so many and ended up with the 955 and couldn't be happier. Had the 265 but like you, I found the amoled display distracting and too "in your face". Also I prefer the true always on that MIP displays have. Also had the Pace 3 but that was way too small for my wrist and wanted something a little beefier. There's a few others I tried like Amazfit, Samsung..
Thank you so much I have exactly a 175cm wrist and post purchase of the 955 I was worrying about the size but you say it’s perfect. So thank you for putting my worries to rest😅

Thanks for the detailed video, Ray. I bought the 945 LTE and it looks like most of these features are coming to the 945 LTE too. Does anything in the 955 justify the extra $50 besides maybe the fact that it may receive updates for longer? The upcoming could very well be 945 LTEs last update FWIW. Any idea how long Garmin plans to support the 945 LTE? I have the 955 on order and trying to make up my mind before my return window closes. Thanks.
You are on the same page as me. Just received the 955 a few days ago and trying to decide between the two. The size is the issue as the 955, although and I'm not sure which to keep. The slightly larger screen is nice. The things driving my decision, apart from the size, are the touch screen (having had the 610/20/30 before I really liked the touch screen) and the in app ability to setup data screens etc. I am hoping the in app ability to setup data screens will come to the 945LTE with the expected firmware update together with the other statistical information updates. Would be interested in your thoughts once you get the 955.
Alright mate, great video and info. Maybe someone else has asked this but I'm trying to decide between the two options:solar and non and wondered who might benefit from the longer battery life? I am a runner , cyclist and walker but rarely do anything that would take longer than a day or two. Is this solar option aimed at mega endurance types or could someone like myself benefit? I also wondered what happens to sleep and training data when charging the watch? Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏
yeah solar lasts longer but I don't think it's worth it for a hundred extra dollars. That is, unless you run ultra marathons or go on super long hiking trips.
Thanks for such a thorough review! One of the biggest reasons I follow your channel and read your reviews. Always top content! Really want one of these but 1) can’t trade in my old Garmin for the 20% discount till the 955 has been out for 6mo and 2) very curious to see what new products and features Apple releases in the fall (AppleWatchOS9 will finally give us a triathlon function!). My thought is if the Apple Watch stuff is good AND they address battery life I’ll stick with Apple. But if they do nothing about the battery life I’ll trade in my old Garmin for that 20% off a newer model and get the 955. 👍🏻 Competing in 70.3 and marathon events this year and 70.3, Ironman, and marathons next year so battery life will be crucial. Cheers!!😁
Is the solar version worth it? Based on your review, the amount of charge is weather dependent and will not always be available, so it's an option that is there but not always utilized to its full capability. Thanks
I wish Garmin would prompt you for used gear also after (or before) a workout. It's always cumbersome to go and edit the activity with the mobile app / browser and change it afterwards. If I have three different running shoes in Garmin Connect, the watch could prompt me to select which of those three I used for said workout. I would use the mileage tracking a thousand percent more often.
Question on running power: I just purchased 955 end of Dec 2022. I don't use the footpod or any accessories, but the watch is showing running power at the end of the run. Is this right? wonder has the watch OS been updated to show power even without the food pod. Thanks!
Thanks for a great comprehensive review. Do you have a suggestion as to how we can record an indoor ski session? Something like the Concept SkiErg or Technogym equivalent.
Great video as usual, thank you! At 34:50, you have a custom stamina screen with distance AND time until empty. Playing about on the watch and in Garmin Connect, I can only see ways to have distance OR time when I edit the 'primary' stamina field. How do you get both please? Thanks
Can I link suggested workout with the option where the watch makes a course for me? And do I have the option to use music at the same time? Thanks for the amazing video!!
Mexican greetings! What a complete and super understandable review! Thanks! I have a question, with all your experience on different sports...would you recommend for a 43 year old rookie (running my first marathon on October following the plan from Garmin on a Vivoactive 4 Darth Vader edition) to follow a new plan from the 955 (I just got mine 3 days ago) and just train based on what the device offers or should I get one of those coaching plans from training peaks or youtubers to train for the next marathon? This time I want to focus on my time :) I know that since now XD TIA!
My plan is to sell my Forerunner 645 music and Garmin Edge 530 to pay for the Forerunner 955. I like the simplicity of having one device that can do it all... and the 955 really seems like a clear winner (HRV metrics FTW!)
Finally upgraded from the 935 to the 955! Bought each of them first week they were available locally. My quick release and quick fit bands don’t seem to work though…
Great recap and explanations...thanks! Question for you and others here. With all the technology and features in the 955 it same like I should start using the 955 to collect all the data when I ride. Currently I use my 1030 to capture all the ride data and then that is uploaded (in my case) to Training Peaks, Strava, and Garmin Connect. To get the full benefits/features & insight that Garmin has developed would you recommend using the watch to collect the data and upload to the platforms and use the "head unit" as just a display then purge/trash after a successful watch upload? This has me thinking maybe someone (if they have not already) should make a "monitor" head unit that connects to the watch that could be configured to display any of the watch data fields or generated information. Or give the users the ability to run their Edge units in full monitor mode. With all that said maybe I should play around with "Extended Display Mode" on my Edge units..... I just don't believe it would be a full monitor mode. fyi using the term Monitor mode like the AV world does. ;) lol
Have you tried already ? My 1030 broke down and now I'm thinking the same . If I can use this watch to do outdoors ride and zwift indoors it would be a big help for the training status etc ...
I’m planning on getting the 955, thanks for the incredible review! What are the advantages to the HRM vs run pod? I would like the run power and use regular, but it’s unfortunate most HRM don’t stay on in pool. Thanks!
If your bank isn't supported, it works with Curve. You can connect any card to Curve and then use your Curve virtual card with Garmin. It's a shame they don't partner with someone like PayPal and then they wouldn't have to negotiate with every bank in the world.....
Kind of, at least. They are adjusted from tour recovery, your training load and probably other metrics that are inclused in the training readiness, imo.
Ray! Thanks for the awesome review! I'm in process to change my sportwatch... I have always used Polar and I feel a sort of affection to the brand (now sporting a Vantage V). I really can't decide between 955 or VV2. I mostly use it for cycling since I'm not into swimming and I quit running after a knee problem. The new 955 appeals me a lot and seems to provide tons of info even if I suppose Polar does the same just compacting them in easier way to read. There are just 2 things that make me hesitant : I love the sleek design of Polar and I am scared to loose continuity in my training log if I change ecosystem. Still it's a tough match so that I can't decide. Any input? Thank you in advance!
Same situation I have. I have used polar since 2007 and for last 4 years having V1. I do cycling most and had garmin edge in parallel to polar. I ordered 955. I will miss recovery options in polar - nightly recharge and great orthostatic test and also flow app. Fortunately I used strava as well so I will manage to maintain the continuity of exercises analysis.
Any advice on day time naps? Seems like Garmin fourunner 955 solar does not track does. My night sleep is beeing recored okay, but the rest, can't seem to find any way, at least to add it manualy. Any tips? Ty

How accurate do you think is the Training Readiness? This feature is kind of the only thing I am missing from the FR255 and the reason I am considering getting the FR955...
Why would they do that? Unfortunately They want you to buy a new watch 😉 especially if the new update changes specs (e.g. battery life) on older watches.
Anyone know that when using the triathlon activity on the 955 do you just start and stop it after each activity? Or do start/stop it again to keep track of transition times?
Hi 🙂 from Australia 🇦🇺 😊 I really love your videos and have been following you for a long time.can you tell me if this garmin forerunner 955 will it take you back to the start point of your hiking route? Cheer Sue
Hi, love your videos. SO HELPFUL! I'm trying to find out if I use my edge 830 for cycling and 955 for daily affairs... The 955 can still assess training readiness and BB etc..? Thanks in advance!
I saw your review of the Edge 1040, and there you mention, that route recalculation was nearly instant. Is that the case for the FR955? I rewatch the map section and the written review but could not find mention of it.
Thanks for your video. I owned polar grit x and planning to upgrade to 955. What do you think about the battery life? Is it close to the specification? And the HRV function is similar to ANS charge in nightly recharge of polar?
Can I Use a Screen Protector With a Garmin Solar Watch? Garmin does not recommend the use of any kind of screen protector, as it will reduce the solar intensity received by the Power Glass lens.
Hi, I’ve had a garmin forerunner 955 for about 6 months now but whenever I’m doing a course and go off it, it will never reroute me like it should. This works fine for courses or routes I generate using the watch. I use Komoot and then export routes from that as a gpx file into garmin connect and then sync that to my watch as this works better than using the Komoot app on the watch. Is there a setting I need to change or something I need to do differently if transferring routes from Komoot to make the automatic rerouting work? Thanks 👍
Hi @Dc, Yesterday I got my new device 955 ("upgraded" from 745). What I have noticed that there is no option to end workout (exp.warm up, run, recover and cool down) and transition to a timer for "usual" ruining, like 745 have, or I am missing something, thanks..
Hello you mention to download additional maps via computer as it saves time … ? How exactly can I do this? Meanwhile I tried to download map with my device now it says “qued” that doesn’t sound like an active download process. Van you please help ?
Is there way to look back and see what battery precentage you had left AFTER an activity ?? Ive a 100k coming up. Im just not sure if the battery will last. I did 63km a few months ago, the battery lasted but not sure how much i had left. The 100km race will take about 15- 16hrs. Would it last that long???
Hmm one question: Why do I not see my actual VO2max for cycling, the metric for running is visible as training status…although I did a FTP-Test on Zwift and linked FR955 to my smart trainer…no VO2max( not even the previous cycling VO2max from my good old FR935(for running it was on FR955, without any activity on the new device))
How do I access media control to access music that’s playing from my phone . It’s not a available option like it was on the 245 . I understand you can download music but for media that’s just playing from the phone I can no longer pause from the watch .
This video helped me decided what watch I like better. The 255 or 955. My only problem is nothing is available to buy right now? Do you have any insight when they will be available to buy or when they will have new shipments coming in on the Garmin website?
Do you know if Garmin has added the Multisport Race planning option to the race calendar yet? I was trying to follow along and add an event to my GC calendar, but it doesn't seem to recognize it. :( Great review though! I got the 955S and LOVE it!
Great review! Thanks in advance
I’m sort of confused. I want something for multiday treks. Just like the race calendar, can I use this to prepare for a 7day trek to Himalayas? Also, can I load gpx file to climb pro to track how much suffering is left for the day
Thanks for this great video Ray. Still debating between Epix 2 and 955 Solar. Price aside, which one do you prefer? I have not been able to see or try neither of the watches. I am very keen on AMOLED but also tempted by longer battery life (I am runner, so it is more a convenience than actual need) and weight of the 955. Is the difference in weight that noticeable? What would be your preference? Thanks
Does it allow to replace the battery? After 4 years of using FR935, looks like the only option offered by Garmin is to throw it to the garbage and buy 955.
I agree. This is totally unacceptable. Battery replacement should be a mandatory requirement for all mobile electronic devices. European Union are you listening?

I don't think u need solar. You're just as likely to do an ultra event on an overcast day. Just have a powerbrick handy for when u might need it.
Hi have a question, can you download any other map ? example I’m at El Salvador ca
Thanks great video .
Competing in 70.3 and marathon events this year and 70.3, Ironman, and marathons next year so battery life will be crucial. Cheers!!😁
Stupid question, but.. how the white band looks after couple of months? Is it dirt or not?
Thanks for a great walkthrough.
You can change it easily in the mobile app?
@@Fozzee.1970 I don't think it's easy/convenient enough with the mobile app. I know it can be done :)
Question on running power: I just purchased 955 end of Dec 2022. I don't use the footpod or any accessories, but the watch is showing running power at the end of the run. Is this right? wonder has the watch OS been updated to show power even without the food pod. Thanks!
Yes.
Thanks for a great comprehensive review. Do you have a suggestion as to how we can record an indoor ski session? Something like the Concept SkiErg or Technogym equivalent.
I have to say, Garmin's understanding of "very shortly" is very different from mine. :D
Great video as usual, thank you! At 34:50, you have a custom stamina screen with distance AND time until empty. Playing about on the watch and in Garmin Connect, I can only see ways to have distance OR time when I edit the 'primary' stamina field. How do you get both please? Thanks
Really useful, thanks for the content.
Can I link suggested workout with the option where the watch makes a course for me? And do I have the option to use music at the same time? Thanks for the amazing video!!
Do you cover the morning report in this? I cannot seem to find it.
Awesome! Thank you! Open water swimming test?
Yup, already in my main written and video reviews. Cheers!
I like the simplicity of having one device that can do it all... and the 955 really seems like a clear winner (HRV metrics FTW!)
or... at least HELP pay for the 955 because there will still be a few hundred $ price difference :D
Just bought one.... am religiously playing your video again and again. Wanna make my $ worth it... LoL..
Can you give some battery tips?
Much appreciated Ray.
Finally upgraded from the 935 to the 955! Bought each of them first week they were available locally. My quick release and quick fit bands don’t seem to work though…
Was the upgrade worth it? I’m thinking of upgrading my 935 to the 955 solar today. I don’t like the 965 because of the new screen
@@DhvanitShah I’m the same as you. Is the 955 worth the extra $$$ over the 935 ?
@@GodzillaGoesGagaI just got the 955 solar yesterday and feels like a massive upgrade from the 935!
Physio TrueUp can sync the data so the workouts made with your Edge will impact the training load/recovery/etc. on your 955.
I’m planning on getting the 955, thanks for the incredible review! What are the advantages to the HRM vs run pod? I would like the run power and use regular, but it’s unfortunate most HRM don’t stay on in pool. Thanks!
HRM swim stays on in the pool when pushing off the wall
If your bank isn't supported, it works with Curve. You can connect any card to Curve and then use your Curve virtual card with Garmin. It's a shame they don't partner with someone like PayPal and then they wouldn't have to negotiate with every bank in the world.....
Good point!
Do the suggested daily work-outs/trainingplans change based on the trainingreadiness? That would be huge.
Kind of, at least. They are adjusted from tour recovery, your training load and probably other metrics that are inclused in the training readiness, imo.
Thank you very much for your instruction.
Any tips? Ty
Only Fitbit and Galaxy Watch have those accurate features
Add sleep mode to your controls page and then turn the watch on sleep mode when you nap.
thanks for your hard work.
Why is the solar not infinite? Only adds a couple of hours compared to instinct 2 solar?
Instinct 2 had a much bigger solar area at 100% capacity, and concurrently has much smaller power draw needs.
Thank you so much that was very helpful for me, one quick Q , can we plan a workout for treadmill running or it has to be free run? I couldnt plan a workout and transfer it to treadmill section, thank you so much in advance
Thanks for another amazing detailed walkthrough! What is the maximum number of data fields for the default analogue watch faces shown at 0:52?
Did you respond to the “text me” message below. I did and does not seem legit?
@@energysourcelove Definitely not legit. Anything that asks you to message outside of youtube and puts contact details within the youtube username is spam.
@@tmonine Never seen spam on you tube before. I had just asked DC for some resources to learn more about the Garmin UI as I am new to it. So I thought maybe he was trying to send me a link or something. It was a early in the morning and I was not yet thinking clearly. Thanks for replying. Have a great weekend!
No worries @@energysourcelove you have a great weekend too!
How accurate do you think is the Training Readiness? This feature is kind of the only thing I am missing from the FR255 and the reason I am considering getting the FR955...
Seems to be pretty solid for me at this pint.
@@Dcrainmaker How many pints did you drink?
@@ManuelAMartinez three of four pints down the road and I suspect his answer may differ.
Ray, will they be pushing any of these software features to the 945? Thanks great content!!!
Why would they do that? Unfortunately They want you to buy a new watch 😉 especially if the new update changes specs (e.g. battery life) on older watches.
945 lte will get but not 945
Correct, 945 LTE but not 945.
Not for 945 I think because of the old sensor.
Gotta say, gettiny my stryd paired with garmin watches is a huge pain
Anyone know that when using the triathlon activity on the 955 do you just start and stop it after each activity? Or do start/stop it again to keep track of transition times?
You hit the lap button into and out of transition.
Hi 🙂 from Australia 🇦🇺 😊 I really love your videos and have been following you for a long time.can you tell me if this garmin forerunner 955 will it take you back to the start point of your hiking route? Cheer Sue
Yup, you can do a variety of back to start options, including the exact same route, the fastest route, or even some other routed variant.
@@Dcrainmaker thank you soo much for your reply.Cheers Sue
Awesome video! To get a measure on Training Readiness, do I need to run or can it be derived from weight lifting workouts.
Hi, love your videos. SO HELPFUL! I'm trying to find out if I use my edge 830 for cycling and 955 for daily affairs... The 955 can still assess training readiness and BB etc..? Thanks in advance!
I am interested in it too, did you find an answer?
Interesting how you have a bunch of biking activities planned... I wonder why that might be 🤔
1040 lol
I saw your review of the Edge 1040, and there you mention, that route recalculation was nearly instant. Is that the case for the FR955? I rewatch the map section and the written review but could not find mention of it.
Thanks for your video. I owned polar grit x and planning to upgrade to 955. What do you think about the battery life? Is it close to the specification? And the HRV function is similar to ANS charge in nightly recharge of polar?
The battery life is in line with the spec, in my case 👌
I never owned a Polar si couldn't answer your other question.
Thanks 👍
Hi @Dc,
Yesterday I got my new device 955 ("upgraded" from 745). What I have noticed that there is no option to end workout (exp.warm up, run, recover and cool down) and transition to a timer for "usual" ruining, like 745 have, or I am missing something, thanks..
is just training readiness worth to go for 955 instead of 255?
Hello you mention to download additional maps via computer as it saves time … ? How exactly can I do this? Meanwhile I tried to download map with my device now it says “qued” that doesn’t sound like an active download process. Van you please help ?
How do I get the widget that is shown on 11:49 with FTP and W/kg?
Is the FR955 one of your daily watch?
Hi I just got the watch but I can’t seems to download the maps on my watch. I click on add maps but no option is available?
Do you know if Garmin has added the Multisport Race planning option to the race calendar yet? I was trying to follow along and add an event to my GC calendar, but it doesn't seem to recognize it. :( Great review though! I got the 955S and LOVE it!
Not yet, no.
Great review! Quick question I have my watch set up sleep 11pm to 7am I click on do not disturb option as well and my screen is not completely off I can see in a very dim way my screen, I also went to back light option and under sleep it does not give me the option to 0 the lowest is 5% how can I have my screen completely off while I sleep?
Thanks
Once you see the Amoled, it’s hard to choose anything else
@@From_the_mil Exactly.
@@From_the_mil agreed, however the epix is bulky
Maybe it’s time to upgrade my 935.
I've taken la plonge. 935 actually worth cr@p all on ebay too. Frickin bargain for whoever picks it up.
