    Great review of both watches, Shane. I only wish I had a watch like either one when I started running in April, 1978. Casio was popular and also Timex Ironman watches, but no GPS back in the 70’s and 80’s.
    Shortly before I had to quit running in early 2015 because of my back, I bought a Forerunner 210, which I still use, though I’d like an upgrade for my sport walking I do now. They’re both great.

    Thanks for the review. For me, besides the features you mentioned, the ability to track swimming (pools) was also a decisive factor.

    Exactly the kind of review i wanted to make up my mind. I really dont want to be pressing the down button to get that extra data every time i run. 245 for me. Thanks so much.
    Ps- strap of 245 is definitely better.

    I still didn't buy my first running watch, and my choice -right now- is the 45. As a beginner runner, who might going to do a marathon 2 years from now, and cycling daily, I found that the 45 covers up my needs.
    - the map is a really good addition if you're running in trails or somewhere you're not familiar, but for me it's not a big selling point.
    - I don't need music from my watch as I have my phone with me while I'm running.
    - higher pixel count on screen is a nice thing, but during running, the number's edge sharpness is the last thing I think is important. (If I'd want a really good looking screen, I'd look for something else, like Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, Watch Active, or something like those. I know, those are not specialized running watches.)
    - easily interchangeable straps - that is something I'd love! I don't think I would break the silicone straps on the 45, but having cheaper spares is a good thing.
    What I want from a watch is reliable HR monitoring, GPS, battery life; easy use during exercise, easily readable basic info (distance, avg. pace, HR), advanced info on phone app, Strava sync. Oh, and I don't want to empty my bank account. :-) (I found the 45's price a bit high -around 224 USD here in Hungary-, but the 245's price is really high for me, as it is 345 USD.)
    Thanks for the video, it was really good to see the differences! Keep up the good work!

    • @shanebow
      @shanebow  5 років тому

      Hey Péter thanks for your comments... Means a lot. Looks like the 45 is definitely the right one for you, you're going to get some really good use out of it! Good look in your training and your future marathons... 😎

    • @balogh89
      @balogh89 5 років тому

      Yes, I really hope that I won't have the buyer's remorse after getting it. :-) Actually I'm pretty sure that I'll love all the functions that it'll provide. And I still think that your previous review is a solid base for my decision!!
      Oh, I have a question about the watch, if you don't mind. When you set up the data fields on the watch, you have the option to see the pace and the average pace. While the pace is set, it is shows you your current pace, always updating? And the average pace shows the pace of your last km/mil, or the average pace from the beginning? I'd like to see the the pace of the last km, it would be awesome to have this option.
      Thanks for your answer! Have a nice day!

    • @shanebow
      @shanebow  5 років тому +3

      Yes, no problems... The pace is basically how fast you are going at the moment with a few seconds of a delay. The average pace is from the start of your run. Be confident with your choice, the 45 will do you really well 😎

    • @balogh89
      @balogh89 5 років тому

      All right, thanks for the info! I'll order the 45 next week, hopefully Garmin HUN will have a black one on stock. Can't wait to try the watch on a run or cycling session; and I'm really curious about the 24/7 services, like sleep monitoring or body battery. I never had any tool to measure stuff like this.. I can imagine my wife's look when I'll go to bed with the watch on... :-))
      But until then, your videos will accompany me! :-)

    Hi Shane! great review, You have a really nice way to explain stuff and not overwhelm the person who is listening (most of all when English is not our first language). Quick question I technically start running (6 months) still trying to accomplish getting a better average pace rather than planning more pro goals as a first marathon. How important you consider is the "race predictor" feature? is a must or is it just something you can plan in advance and still give a good result? Cheers from Mexico :)

    • @shanebow
      @shanebow  5 років тому

      Hey Audrina 😎 first off awesome work with running for 6 months and getting to that point. Thanks for your comments that are great and useful. It's a great idea to get your pacing in control as that's so important when you start training and entering races. Whilst the race predictor has some maths behind it I would just look at it as your potential if you have the right training plan and everything goes well the week prior to the race and on race day. I think it's motivational to look at it and realistic to think you will get those times if you put the work in. You're going to end up being even quicker than those predictor times though. Keep up the awesome work and I love your marathon ambition.... Go smash it!!!!

    Thank you very much for the review! I have seen a number of reviews of the 245 and was quite drawn to it. But your review tells me that the 45 essentially has all the functionality of the 245, minus silver buttons, 4 data screens and GPS map functionality. None of which I particularly need. I am then left wondering whether the difference in price is equally small. On to Amazon!

    • @shanebow
      @shanebow  5 років тому +4

      Hey Remco, thanks for the comments! 😎 The mathematical equation you could use is take the difference in price and work out how many months you will keep the watch before upgrading then divide the difference by those months 😀

    Hi, just bought my Forerunner 245. Just subscribed to your channel, looks great. Wondering if you can help with a couple of issues? During a run, the watch vibrates every single second! I need to change it to every K, can you help?
    Also, I’m having problems using the data screens. I’ve learnt how to get them on my watch, it seems that you’re only allowed to use 2 at any one time? Is this the case? If you could help that would be great, thanks!

    I hope this is relevant (so apologies if it's not) Due to minor knee issues I am limited to 2 runs per week. So i mix it up with Cycling and Elliptical. On my 235 I simply use the "Other" profile and then change in in Connect. However, I see that both of the 45 and 245 have an Elliptical profile. Have you used it? Does it require an add-on? I haven't yet found a retailer with stock so I can see for myself. I'm just ok reading my old Fenix 1 in good light and hoping for better.

      Hey Jim, thanks for your comments! No real difference on the readability. The 45 default run settings are bolder than the 245 of you didn't want to play with customising the options. The 245 is bigger and had more pixels do it is the better screen for sure.Thanks for your question 😎

      Hey both! Thanks for your questions. It's a tough question and it came up a few days ago too... I need to make it my next video in the next few days so definitely come back/press the notification bell...
      To look at the headline differences the 235 can have extra data screens and widgets that you can install from the Garmin connect store. The data screens I find helpful when running in races or training for a big race. There are some great deals out there on the 235 at the minute. On the other hand the 45 screen looks really nice - it has a circular screen and I think the whole watch looks smarter. The 45 user interface is much quicker and sleeker too giving you access to options faster. I hope this helps...

      @@shanebow Coming from the FR25, I'm currently waiting for my FR45 to arrive today after having had this question myself. I’ve decided on longevity and functions: basically the 45 can do what the 235 can but with updated hardware that will last me longer than the 235 would if I purchased it today. I don’t care for super advanced metrics so going from the 25 to the 45 seemed like a reasonable decision in the end. However, if I had the money, the 245 would've been an easy choice.

      I don´t own a Huawei phone, but much people have some issues with fitness trackers. Huawei seems to have some energy saving routines which cuts the connection in some cases. There must be a setting for each App to disable this "battery optimization". If i remember right, you can search in your Settings/App List for "battery" or "energy" to find it. Maybe this article could help (but it is just a quick google search, maybe you find a better one): support.doubletwist.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001504071-How-to-turn-off-battery-optimization-on-Huawei-devices .

      Good job! You will be at the 945 within the next few hours 😎 There isn't too much difference in cost to the music model. If you love your music when running I think it's a good shout. You definitely don't want to be out running in a few months wishing you could have had a better model that had built in music. With Amazon music and Spotify available it does make it a solid music player. Life's about having no regrets, it's going to motivate you to be fitter and healthier.... I think this can be easily solved through a software update. What I’m thinking is if you put 1 or 2 data fields instead of the full 3 to be visible, the field name can also be shown, but I’m betting there’s only a 50% chance of that happening.
