One thing Garmin needs to address that has been a problem forever with the suggested workouts is (I don’t think) you can’t set your own pace zones. Despite having years of my data, this morning my Garmin thinks I should be doing threshold efforts at a pace I can only ever dream of. I couldn’t do the recommended pace if it was downhill, with a tailwind and being chased by a large angry dog! I've never owned a fitness watch so would be grateful for your insight: I'm leaning towards the 255s due to smaller form factor; it appeals to me that I will just forget I have it on, (particularly useful during sleep) and I would use all its features on the connect app of my phone. Is this realistic, or does one have to interact with the watch face itself? I'm not a runner, more into gym/bodybuilding, and want to use the watch for stress tracking, and overall fitness tracking over time. Thank you!
Yes it’s not a requirement to interact with the watch for most of the part, unless you’re tracking your workout or wanting to see some data quickly. A glance at the screen shows heart rate and battery life. There are data rich watch faces also available that show steps and other data I use a FR55
Hi, I am thinking of switching from Garmin Vivoactive 4 to Forerunner 255/955, but I have concerns about the possibility of using all the functions related to the training status and measurement of effectiveness. Therefore, I am asking for your support in this regard. Until now, I have not used the Vivoactive 4 to record my runs. I will also add that I do not have a power meter in the bike. I have used the Vivoactive 4 watch for swimming, cycling (without a power meter), hiking and fitness. I'm not a runner - I don't like it. However, I want to receive more statistics provided by the new Forerunner 255/955 models: it is about measuring performance and training status (e.g. stamina, performance measurement, training status, load, training readiness, rest time, body battery, acclimatisation, etc.). I read in the manual that this data depends on the VO2 MAX. In the new models, you can independently perform the VO2 MAX test (on request) with running or cycling (with a power meter is required). However, in Vivoactive only the march was enough to make estimation; there was no need to run. Can the new forerunners also estimate VO2 max from walking? In addition, I read on Garmin's website support ("What Is VO2 Max Estimate and How Does It Work?) that if VO2 Max is not estimated from running or cycling with a power meter, VO2 max can be estimated from walking (as in VIVOACTIVE 4) or from all day heart rate. Have checked if this also apply to the forerunner 255/955 watches? I did not see any writings of this in the manuals. After two weeks of only swimming (no running, no cycling, no walking), will my VO2 max be estimated from heart rate? Will this value be taken into account for statistics related to the measurement of effectiveness and training status?
Also have the same questions. Currently looking for my first Garmin and can’t decide to buy a way cheaper Vivoactive4S or the more advanced Forerunner 255S. What do you guys think?

I barely use 10% of in-built functions on my running watch and cycling computer but still considering 255 for buying. Just because of battery life and Gps accuracy. The other things do not matter
Which watch do you currently have? I have an old Apple watch and considering a Garmin watch to complement my Garmin cycling computer. A bit of a data nerd. Don't know which model yet though. Mostly do cycling.
@@VionixSpots I done exactly this a month ago! I have the Edge 1030+ and ditched my Apple Watch for a Forerunner 55! I’m over the moon with the move. The battery life is amazing for one. I’m not bothered about closing apple rings, I do miss Apple Pay but I have my iPhone. For fitness this is the odd jog here and there but mainly I use the 55 for tracking sports (football and basketball) and don’t need power etc. Sadly I can’t justify the 255 but it looks awesome and so much more involved in the Garmin eco system
@@VionixSpots Garmin Edge 130+ / Garmin Vivoactive 3. I'm not sure that u'll find even a fraction of that ton of Garmin running functions useful, but I guess its battery life is worth to replace an Apple watch
@@mvp_kryptonite Thanks for the feedback. I hesitant between the Venu 2 Plus and the 255s now. Curious to see if there's going to be a comparison review made between the 2 :)
Was thinking of going for a coros pace 3 but this feels like the better choice. Great video
Hm... after all these additions I wonder if there will be any room left for a red 755. But I guess we will see it after your 955 videos 🙂
have a good one too
Looks good but now I wonder when I’ll see all these new race and running training widgets on Fenix 7 etc :(
I've never owned a fitness watch so would be grateful for your insight: I'm leaning towards the 255s due to smaller form factor; it appeals to me that I will just forget I have it on, (particularly useful during sleep) and I would use all its features on the connect app of my phone.
There are data rich watch faces also available that show steps and other data
I use a FR55
Maybe try Venu 2S, it would be a lot more suitable for non runner.. I think Ray also has the video review on Venu 2/2S 😀
Seriously looking at a garmin watch , but still struggling to pick one. Main interest are cycling (road, gravel & MTB)
Been wondering the same question. Do you by any chance got the answer on this one?
Also have the same questions. Currently looking for my first Garmin and can’t decide to buy a way cheaper Vivoactive4S or the more advanced Forerunner 255S. What do you guys think?
@@ardiancandraputra2559 still anyone has not replyed
I wish more watches added some basic scuba diving / freediving features. Like how deep, how long, and how much rest time going up... 🙏
They want us to buy the Garmin Descent :/
your eyes must still be good to see the data on a "small" watch. they have the decent line for diving
I don't care for activity. What watch should I look for to get polished notification functionality and always on MIP display with >2wh battery life?
Just a quick question. So, the Instinct 2 will have the exact same training load metrics (plus HRV) as the forerunner 255, right?
Do you see segments from Strava on this watch?
Subscribe, I just wanna know, in my country fr255 and 945 are now in the same price, what would you pick?
I know 945 was your favourite for 2021
Thanks for replying
What about a comparison between the 255 and the 745 since it appears to be very similar in features and price? Thanks in advance!!
I love the t-shirt
Hey, awesome review. Do you know (of course you do) what music systems the 255 music can use? I see spotify and amazon music, but what else?
great review as usual. Will the 7X get the new training and recovery software updates on the new 255 and 955? Keep up the great reviews!
Of course it will. :) Fear not!
Would you say this a better than the coros pacer 2? I am looking for a new watch
Hey Ray, good job as always. Will you sum up the differences between FR255 and Instinct 2? The same price point (base versions) so probably many people will be comparing these two.
Yes - that would be useful. I'm in that comparing group.
Did you decide? I’m on the fence about them too
@@Garaktys yeah, got myself a 255 because of more screen area.
@@FlyingAss Hey, Did you notice some creep in the button that are not the "Start/Stop" button?
Very information video. I am in between choosing 255 and 745 both with same price. Can you suggest
I'd probably go FR255, since it's going to get updates going forward for quite some time. You'll be missing ClimbPro from the FR745 though.
Can you perform a lactate threshold guided workout with a chest strap on the 255? (It wasn’t possible on the 245)
still missing non-contact charging (e.g. wireless charging) because the garmin cable sucks.
Still missing a decent screen lock. (why does the lock symbol cover the screen?)
still missing a navigation tool that can come anywhere near dynamic.watch
still can't select gear directly in the watch? (e.g. which shoes you used)
what else is missing?
hi everyone. Need an advice: my fenix5s needs a head unit replacement. for my activities, my fenix is still good enough. Just wondering if is relevant to spend some money to repair a watch of 7 year old when with double cost i can get a brand new 255. What do you think about that?
Would you recommend this watch over a Fenix 6, given it's new features and multi band?
At 11:10 you said power meter is required for cycling VO2 Max, did you mean to say HRM? Assuming you don’t need a power meter to calc VO2?
Thanks, this is great! What Garmin model is best for you?
Hi can anyone tell me what hrv and vow means please? Great video but I am new to smart watches and didn't understand this. Also what does multi and GPS mean please? Thank you for an excellent video..Natalie 😁
Thx, looking forward for 255 written review and comparison to 955.
Well, spotted the "Mont Ventoux vs Des(fit)" event. When is it going to take place? ;-)
On the date shown in the video. ;)
Congratulations for your depht review, i have a question for you: do you think Is a good idea ti replace my Swim 2 with the new Forerunner 255 especially for Openwater swimming? Thanks a lot. Best regards
Hey DC, do you know if the vo2 for cycling can be calculated from workouts synced to Garmin connect, I use TrainerRoad and don't think I can have my pm connect to two devices.
Hi... is ths triathalon mode soley for swim/bike/run activity? Is it the same as multisport mode? Can the triathalon mode be edited to just a run/bike/run for example? TIA.
Thank you very much for the very nice review!!
If I understood right the 255 must be a better watch than the 945?
More accurate and advanced right?
Great review Thanks!
Do you know whether 255 S model, shows on screen the same number of data fields as 255?
Hello! The Polar Vantage V2 is on sale and I think I could get it cheaper compared to FR255. Do you think that in terms of features, Vantage V2 beats FR255? Thank you!
What’s the better watch? The 255 or the instinct 2? Both say 30 hours of gps which is the most I would ever need. Thanks for the help.
Would like to configure watch via iPhone but can't find where on the iPhone I can do so. Any help is appreciated.
I can’t see any of the info when running so I need it to talk to my earphones but it doesn’t.. very frustrating. Any ideas on a watch that will tell me what my pace, HR etc is when running? My apple used to but it’s not great for marathon and proper training
Currently have a Galaxy Watch 4 classic 46m and looking to upgrade.
Would you recommend this over waiting for the Watch 7 comming out this summer?
do you think they will keep the 745 now that this is a multisport watch? should we expect an update for that too?
I'm confused, what does the fenix series have that this doesn't? Maps? Slightly better battery (as of fenix 7)?
So if i have a power meter in my road bike i can read the data in this garmin and save it? Thanks so much
If now fenix 6 is for £299 and same 745 is it better to choose 255 for £399 or better is buy fenix6?
Where can you buy the 255? I don’t see it at REI, Best Buy, Cabela’s - anywhere. I want to see it in person before dropping $400.
Thank you for reminding me to "whack the like button". JK your reviews and the go-to information everyone is looking for. Thanks for the info. What bands will fit the new 255 and 955? I headed toward the 955 but watched this to be sure. band sizes would help

Hey there! Nice video! If you had to opt between Suunto 5 and FR 245, which one would you get and why ? Thanks in advance!
@DC Rainmaker
Great video. Im been Garmin whole time. coros has my interest with battery life. I don’t care about music on watch. Be interested in seeing a video on your thoughts and comparison on Coros pace 2 vs Garmin 255.
Sounds like Coros pace 3 might be this fall, have you heard anything?
From Seen past UA-cam reviews coros is behind on Garmin on app features/layout few other things, while a lot people may not are about that and just want a multi sport watch, with great battery life and simplicity. Coros ahead of Garmin on battery life and slightly lighter. Sounds like coros is working hard to catch up on all little features but keeping with better battery life…..
Im trying to decide between coros pace 2 (or wait for coros pace 3 this fall) or get Garmin 255 for my 15 year old and also 13 year old (they are on swim and running team and both are gonna start doing Triathlon this summer. I’m not going to rush into purchasing watches for them, just trying to figure out when it comes time to purchase. Anyway, Always great videos.
Great, JUST bought the FR 945 like 3 weeks ago :)
Thanks for the review. I currently have a 945. Will I see an improvement in features with this watch or am I better of keeping the 945? Keep up the good work!!
Please dear, can we add musculation training to the suggested cardio training ? Or it will be considered as too much training ? Because we don't want to only do cardio... Best regards
