I wonder if this increases engine temperatures? Would be nice to have seen temperature test results for both the trunk, and engine bay. Overall great DYI.
You’re must be getting hot. I have the Eventuri Cold Air Intake with the clear cover and it doesn’t get hot at all. Good mod for those that feel they have this issue.
Yeah, every time I look at that beautiful intake I just think of how that’s 1/8th of the cost of Forced induction for this platform. I messed up and dropped 5k on something for the car, should be in a video soon! 😅 but yeah, long term goal is FI
I’m assuming so, that strange though. My guess is the son hitting the top is heating it up? Maybe insulate the bottom side of the frunk lid? Even the front brake ducts push air right past the trunk so I’m not sure what would cause it to heat up.
Because compared to other kits, it hangs low in awkward areas below the car rather than just outward from the car. It rubs on damn near everything. I only put it back on the car for shows at this point as driving the car with it installed is no fun.
That’s a good partial fix. Inside the trunk on the backside of the bumper there are two vents and they’re letting hot air in off of the exhaust pipes into the trunk area. Put some duct tape over the vents..
I cut that part out of the video, but they don’t really make sense. Why did GM put them there? They don’t function as a positive pressure vent like they would in a front engine car so pointless imo. Good call on covering them, they are one way from the inside out.
@@GhostSpeedShop I think they are there to allow air to escape the boot upon closing swiftly. This keeps the Delois from rebounding when slammed. Most people close it softly and let the latch draw it down. Keep up the cool videos.
I’m not sure but deodorant no longer melted in the trunk afterwards. It was difficult to get measurements because I didn’t take them before I insulated.
There is a 6.2 liter, 490 hp engine directly in front of the rear compartment. How on earth would there NOT be heat? Use the front trunk for cold items.
@@GhostSpeedShop gave me ideas for convertible. Idk if the temps are the same to start cuz the convertible top kinda folds up partially right there between the engine and the trunk. Gotta see what I’m workin with
Just hoping that GM engineers weren’t relying upon that area as a heat transfer surface to evacuate heat from the engine bay. Seems unlikely, but there must be a reason as to why they didn’t spend $10 to eliminate the problem of hot trunks as delivered from the factory. That said, nothing worse than melted ice cream!
I have a concern this may create more heat in the engine bay specifically around the air box and mass airflow sensor area. I just put any heat sensitive items on the passenger side floorboard or seat
Your theory is unfortunately absolutely correct. What are the long term effects of restricting heat dissipation in such a critical area? The engine bay may overheat, more than it already does, and create far worse problems over time than having a hot trunk. This just seems like a natural consequence with mid-engine cars. Having storage in that area is already a convenience in utility that breaks the rules and, therefore, should be appreciated with its natural deficiencies in mind. Perhaps it went down like this: Chevy executives pitched that they needed a mid-engine car that has a trunk and is $65k. Chevy engineers said "That's not possible". Chevy executives replied "Make it happen". Corners had to be cut. It's Chevy after all. The unreliable company protected by the government whose CEO blatantly lied about being the number one EV manufacturer in the world about a year ago.
Yeah I’m thinking it might be easier just to get one of those soft-sided insulation ice chests and keep it in the trunk…that way engine heat can still transfer into the trunk but it won’t affect any cold food items. Probably wouldn’t even need ice as the cold food items would provide the cooling effect
It could be, but the air box material is a bit thicker than even the panel that goes into the trunk. I’ll bet the thickness insulated the air box pretty well. I’m sure enough airflow throw it helps keep it cool as well. I might need to test some shielding on the air box in the future to see if it makes a difference.
Simple thermodynamics would say that the heat has to go somewhere. So if it's not dissipating through the trunk, it's staying in the engine department. To the detriment of the engine??

On my C8 I took the easy and logical way to carry my temp. sensitive food, like dairy. I put them in the front storage, my frunk. It is much cooler there than the rear trunk. I avoided all this unnecessary work.
Only takes me 10-12 minutes to get home from the grocery store, and it doesn’t effect the temperature of my food at all. Not even ice cream. This may be different for you if your drive is over a half hour long. Another thing you can do is put the cold items in the fronk and the rest of the groceries in the back.
I keep the frunk fill of camera gear and cleaning supplies so there’s no room to throw stuff in there. But even on long trips if you throw your suitcase in the rear, your deodorant will melt.
Yes and no, some people throw suitcases back there and various things melt ie deodorants, toothpastes and medications. Owners shouldn’t have to unpack just to store their bags. This could have been and easy fix from the factory.
That’s not how physics work. The engine is completely capable of regulating its own temps through active cooling, radiators, fans etc. this doesn’t create more heat, it prevents the areas around the engine from absorbing and holding heat.
I think this is a bad idea or GM would have done it. Seems to me you will be reflecting heat back into your air box causing heat soak to the airbox and a loss of power. If you need to carry groceries or something else that needs to remain cool, drive your other car.
The airbox sees constant heat from the engine bay already. I think alot of people commenting negate the fact that the airbox is a very thick plastic that should be insulated enough from engine temps. Additionaly there is a constant flow of air through it that should stay cool. Unless anyone has data to state that IAT temps have risen after simply insulating their trunk, then I think the argument is bogus.
The heat is coming from the engine bay, not the exhaust. There’s plenty of heat shielding below the trunk, just not on the front side facing the engine.

so the intake air is absorbing allot of heat from the engine? So much for a cold air intake.

I’m sure enough airflow throw it helps keep it cool as well. I might need to test some shielding on the air box in the future to see if it makes a difference.
Every intake is subject to the heat of an engine...CAI isn't cold air, it's cooler air. LOL.
Great job
Do yourself a favor and also put it on the bottom section because that is where the exhaust runs and heats up the trunk also.
There’s already a heat blanket down there on mine.
