Have you guys noticed a heat issue with the trunk on your C8 Corvette? This could be the fix! Check it out for yourself here: bit.ly/3tCpq9d 👍👍
Need to wrap the engine bay area.
This was actually filmed before I put those on. 👍👍
Good eye! Those are both ZR1 models.

I love these! I have a Private Playlist devoted to all of Justin’s C8 “How To” videos once my C8 comes in! 🔥
Love this! A true friend! 😎👍
@@HorsePowerObsessed SOLID AND FAITHFUL! YOU, ME, FRONT SEAT DRIVER!

Thanks Man, but I think I'm going to still consider using my future C8 trunk space as a Cookie Baker
lol you definitely can do something like that!
You can tailgate Barbecue out of that truck! Ice down your Beer up front!

Looks interesting Justin. Even in 32 degrees back in my home state your still wearing t shirts!
Lol I wasn't outside very long! 🥶
Great Video ! WHY DON’T THEY DO THIS at the FACTORY 🏭 ???
Right?!
Thanks for the heads up. Looks to keep the trunk cooler.
You're very welcome. Definitely a good idea in my opinion.
Thanks. I’m picking up my z51 htc this week from kerbeck and my golf clubs will be a permanent resident in the trunk so your video definitely enlightened me to a potential problem I wasn’t nt even thinking about. Might not be too bad in the winter but I’m sure those temps in the summer here in nj are going to be far worse. I will definitely be checking this out.
Definitely should!
Theoretical Question: If the engine generates heat that partly seeps through to the trunk but now is blocked, will the heat dissipate through the vents &/or or will extra heat remain in the engine compartment longer than planned, possibly causing some unintended negative consequences? . Would love to hear back from any engineers / physicists on this.
Great question !!
I'm no engineer but this doesn't make any sense. The heat that would normally radiate into the trunk will be reflected and radiate out the top vents instead. We aren't talking about hundreds of degrees either.
I had the same question, and it will probably void the warranty if it goes left. I don't think I'll be doing that to my C8!
Good edit, nice video. Looks like some really good results!
Done! Thank you! 👍👍
I’ve notice that on my first drive to PCH, (80 miles) drive. My Canon 5D with extra lens was so hot I moved them to the Frunk. I thought about doing the same back in August 2020 but been deployed. Thanks for showing this and sharing.
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing. Good to see there is an option to address this issue. Too bad GM doesn't have a recall on this problem.
Thank you! Maybe one day they will fix the issue!
*Great Tip and measuring it spells results.*
Thank you!
As always, Justin...an excellent video. Clear, informative, interesting, helpful.
Will done!

Awesome, thank you!!
GREATvideo Justin! I was wondering what mid-engines will do to trunk temps! Perfect timing! And, I really like the scientific approach you took to actually compare the before/after results. Definitely worth the effort and cost, especially if we carry temp sensitive Eq like camera film (yes...I still use some film cameras!), beer cooler....😎 haters just shut up! Heard it all before. Thanks for the information and testing. I wonder if you could get your supplier to custom cut the fitment? I bet they might!
Thank you! I will look into getting them cut to fit!
Great idea . I hope you market the precut mat.
Thanks! I'm looking into it!
Great concept. Now if they could just develop precuts like XPEL does for their PPF, it would enhance coverage and cut down installation time.
Thanks for the product intro.
That would be cool! Maybe we'll see that in the future! Thanks for the support, my friend!
Awesome video!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I would install a layer of the foil material on the metal engine cover (behind the carpet) as well as the back of the carpet. A doulble layer of the foil should help to cut down on the frunk temperatures!
This will be my next project
That seems promising! 😎👍
Definitely! Interesting fix for a strange problem.
It would be quite easy to make a paper template to make the exact shape needed. Cut the mat accordingly and have a custom fit. Thanks for the idea. Keep the Vlogs coming.
Thank you! I definitely will!
For those worried about raising the engine temp by blocking the heat to the trunk, keep in mind that the engine is releasing heat from 6 sides, and you're only blocking part of one side. There's so much dissipation area around the engine, I would guess you couldn't tell the difference in engine temp with or without the heat shield.
Great point!
Just use the frunk no money spent
Heat is a concern in the trunk. Not just for food either. You certainly don’t want to keep electronics, meds, etc in the trunk when traveling. In the Summertime mine hit 134F. I’d like to see the test in the Summertime. Wintertime temperature is no concern at all. Cheers!
For sure an easy DIY and if you doubled it up it might also be even better
Very true. I may do something different with this come summer. Stay tuned.
Cool !! So if you double up on the heat protector it should drop the temperature another 10 to 15 degrees. Thanks Brother !!
Thank YOU!!
Big like on this one. Last summer when it was 85 out on a 3 hr drive it was about 125 in the trunk. I thought about doing this but just use the Frunk more. Definitely will be a great product GM should do this stock.
Thanks! I agree, GM should do something with it.
But what's it weigh? Im sure it was easy to justify weight savings. But for a daily... I'm with you.
LIterally weighs almost nothing. That's the best part. All that I installed wasn't even a quarter of a pound.
@@HorsePowerObsessed i totally get it. But how many of our parts are plastic for the same reason. Ounces add up to pounds and every pound reduces speed. This ain't a Cadillac... it's a Vette!
@@HorsePowerObsessed like why do supercars have straps instead of handles? Ounces
I doubt the heat differential will be as large in the summertime because the engine compartment is not going to get that much hotter while the trunk space would get hotter due to the higher exterior temperature. Just a thought. Be interesting to redo the experiment in July.
Have you done a follow up in the summer to see temperatures? Thanks
That seems to be a simple, inexpensive fix. I bet someone will come up with a molded heat shield that would simply replace the factory part and could be even more efficient. In the meantime, that’s a good way to go 👍🏻
Looks like a good solution. GM will likely follow suit and amend this rear cover with something similar in future production runs. Question tho: Where are the ACS wickers you installed recently? Noticed they're no longer on your car.
I agree, I hope GM takes notice. This video was actually filmed before I installed those. Good eye, though!
Cool. Thanks for clarifying. I thought I might be losing my mind 😜
Be sure to repeat it when the ambient temp is above 85F. I wonder if the temperature differential is constant, that is, limited to about a 30F rise above ambient.
I definitely will come summer.
Impressive will definitely get that but first have to get car lol
Lol yes sir! Definitely recommend it!
Now when the ZO6 comes out if GM desides to put duel exhaust up high, I'm gonna have to figure out a way to grill hot dogs just.over each exhaust or a radiator system that can boil your water for tea or nespresso coffee delivered to the cabin. Then Wala!
🤣🤣🤣 I will have to see that!
Curious if you just increased the engine heat by blocking the heat escaping with that product? While it’s not optimal that the trunk is getting warm, it allowed engine heat to escape. With the heat shield you are trapping the heat next to the motor which will make the engine compartment to stay warmer which will make the engine be less efficient. Curious if you considered that?
Heat mat-I have a HTC with plastic engine bay cover. Will this matter because the heat will not escape as much with the mat and stay in the engine bay??
Any updates on this product as far as cost and design? Have they produced a pre-cut and fit model? And cost?
Same question here...are these now pre-cut to fit?
I picked up popsicles from the local Acme (Ackamee) by the time i got home they were melted.
Yup. It’s a hotbox back there.
Future mod, I imagine someone creating a new rear bumper eliminate the trunk and effectively shorten up the vehicle length to get closer to a Ferrari/McLaren length....with 488 style bumper exhaust ports too
I think the C8 would be much better looking if they would have stopped the car at the end of the engine and just kept the rear trunk out of it.
@@HorsePowerObsessed but people would have screamed about it. The nsx reviews were bad partially due to dumb things like that.
Thanks for the great info. Is there a particular reason why they decided to line the carpet rather than use the material on the engine wall itself? I think it would provide better coverage and also be easier.
I'm not sure how much easier this would be other than installing on the removeable air box part but most heat insulation is not able to get wet. If it gets wet, it loses its functionality.
@@HorsePowerObsessed I looked at the video again and I understand what you mean. I did a quick cost comparison on quality heat shield and this looks like a good price. Thanks, I’m keen to fix this drawback ASAP.
Thank you!
This weather is insane...
Sadly, you can't tell after yesterday and today's temperatures that this was actually filmed in January lol
I knew you were gonna mention ice cream. Lol I can spot-em . How? Because I’m a ice cream lover myself.
lol well, it's the only thing I could think of real quick that doesn't like heat.
Lol. Especially natural vanilla bean.
what mill thickness or did you use? would more be better?
You could definitely double up on it, more would likely do better to block heat but at some point it's going to get hard to get that carpet back in place. Not sure of the thickness, it's sold as a kit.
What was the sharp cutter you used to cut the material?
amzn.to/3sk9FUN
I wish you could see through the rear panel instead.
so what is the brand of heat shielding and how much did you buy?
It’s on my site, link in the description. I buy directly from the manufacturer.
Rock on
🤘😎🤘
Would it be of any additional benefit to also line the left, right and back side of the trunk?? Is it just as easy?
It probably wouldn't be as beneficial because that's not where the majority of the heat comes from but it can't hurt.
Nice shirt btw
Why thank you! I know where you can get one. 50 bucks and I'll get it for you! 😁
One of the first things I did was put Dynamat and Dynaliner in my whole car.
Dynamat is a lot heavier and harder to work with than this stuff. Dynamat is also more so for deadening sound vibration than canceling out heat.
@@HorsePowerObsessed That is mostly true about dynamat but Dynaliner is not heavy at all and does both.
Could you double the heat shield for better results?
In some places, yes.
I don't see why you could not double up on material. Header wraps would help too. lol!
Absolutely could!
Why not put that on that next access plate? I believe you removed that one when you did the air filter. That way, your shielding is right at the heat source. Do that in addition to the carpet.
I actually cut that part from the video I originally recorded because I wasn't sure if it could be installed there since it can get wet, etc. I'll find out though, because it definitely would help even more with heat if it could go there.
How much different would it be to remove the HTC trunk liner?
I just looked at it in my HTC. Should be easier than the coupe. We don't have the mounting brackets they have. I just saw the 4 cargo net hooks, which just unscrew. There are probably the same plugs at the bottom, tho I didn't pull up my mat to check. But installing the heat shield should be easier on the HTC, because the carpet is more flat.
How hot can the HTC get in the same space?
Likely right around the same, maybe a touch higher.
A heat Sheild for C8, I like the idea! The Tesla Roadster they shot into space didn’t even have a heat sheild!
My question is will this cause potential long term engine overheating due to lack of dissipation of engine bay heat thru the rear of the car and the trunk
No, not at all. The head rises through the vents in the hatch.
So you're testing this method on the coupe, would you venture to say that the heat index would be even higher in the trunk compartment on the convertible model?
Probably. I think the heat in general is probably higher in the convertible due to less passive heat dissipation.
@@HorsePowerObsessed Either way this fix should help with the heat pretty well with the convertible too.
Absolutely!
How many mil thick did you use? I asked in MEC forum as well.
Thickness looks to be about 7 to 8mm. Any thicker and you'll have trouble getting the carpet back in place. You can get it here: www.horsepowerobsessed.com/collections/2020-c8-corvette/products/c8-corvette-blockit%C2%AE-ultralite-rear-trunk-heat-shield-kit
Is this cut to fit as sold? If not, one could buy the material for half the price.
Link? I haven't seen this exact material anywhere else.
Just Google heat barrier or thermal insulation. Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot. All over...it's not exactly kryptonite.
Would you have same problem with heat trunk on convertible? Or is it just the coupes?
Same issue for sure!
@@HorsePowerObsessed I ask cuz convertible come.witj heat shield already over the engine which idk why when it has vents right there and it has no engine cover on engine so I was thinking heat shield that on engine and one on trunk would it be to much? And make the heat just not go out as well? Or do you think you can remove heat shield on convertible engine bay and just put shield on trunk?
Can you show us the car washing equipment you are using in your garage!
I have a video showing it getting set up. I do plan on making another video going over everything after a year of usage, so stay tuned!
@@HorsePowerObsessed How can I find your older Video?
You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/2jYPR_NjNaM/v-deo.html
I find it keeps my pizza and fried chicken bucket hot!
lol that's a glass half full kind of mentality! I like it!
Isn't the mat reflecting the heat back into the engine bay and cabin?
No. It's stopping radiant heat which would otherwise be vented out the top of the hatch.
Isn’t the temp always colder at the in-laws??
🤣🤣🤣
Maybe double up on the material at the bottom corner?
Definitely a possibility!
If the heat stays in the engine bay, wont the engine overheat?
Just because it's not entering the trunk does not mean it's staying in the engine bay. The hatch has more than enough ventilation to allow excess heat to escape. 👍👍
Wow! 32°. We're up around 70 ish.
This was filmed in January lol it's 67 here today.
@@HorsePowerObsessed Thank goodness! I was wondering why the heck it was so cold there!
Dominican Republic in October if that works.
Why doesn't GM add this to the C8 - pennies expenditure for a cool trunk, why not?
We may see it in the future.
The heat will have to go some where. Don't want it to over heat the engine or me while driving.
This mat solves a radiant heat issue, it's not something that would ever cause overheating.
Interesting however now I wonder where does that energy go? Does it affect the engine or some other part if the vehicle. I applaud your commitment to excellence however.
Thank you. The heat can eventually be evacuated out of the vents in the engine bay hatch.

Hot truck?
The hottest! 🔥🔥🔥🤣🤣
I'm not a student of thermodynamics. However, that heat TRAPPED has to go somewhere. I don't believe altering the flow of heat is a good thing. I'm sure the engineers would have insulated the back of that trunk carpet.
NO NOT A FIX
So this isn't trapped heat, it's radiant heat. The rear hatch of the car is perfectly vented for this exactly situation. Instead of radiating into the trunk it can flow out the top, afterall, heat rises.
@@HorsePowerObsessed sorry dont agree. Keep driving with that prototype through summer driving season. Then report.
Personally, I'm a fan of aluminum foil which has been proven to reduce thermal conductance as well as attenuating certain EM radiation. For example, the alien mind control waves. One can't be too careful! ;)
