I haven't been able to hear out of my right ear I was wearing very good hearing aid in until five years ago when my earring went totally. I had my old tinnitus in both ears. Started wearing the hearing aid in my left ear it stopped but I still had it in my right ear. Then 4 years ago I lost all the rest admiring I was devastated my whole life changed. I now have to figure out how I was going to communicate with my family because I knew no sign language. About a week after that the buzzing in my ears again. I went to a ENT. The doctor tried a steroid shot in my eardrum hoping that it would come I went back a week later nothing had changed. That's when he referred me to the calculator implant doctor at UVA. So in May of 2019 I had my first cochlear implant surgery why not right ear, which by then I had been deaf in that ear for 6 years. I began to pray and believe that I would hear normal when they turned it on. So in June of the same year, they activated it. I was blessed because I heard normal voices and the ringing in that ear had stopped. In June of 2020, I had my 2nd calculator implant surgery and it was activated in July of the same year. This one I am still working with to get the noise and the voice is more normal. Far far from being there and it does get aggravating but in the long run it until the ringing started getting so loud then I can't hear anything but the ringing. We have tried everything under the sun and still to this day I cannot get it to stop it is triggering headaches anxiety is through the roof!!! If anyone could give any advice find out you just quiet it down I would greatly appreciate it!!! I don't even want to be around anyone. When I am around people they constantly complain that I'm hollering. I don't feel like I have to over talk this ringing. PLEASE HELP!!! I just want my life back!!!

Mi trigger is taking a an afternoon nap. Stress and red wine. The way I deal with this is; I imagine I have the power to hear cosmic sound, and then I ignore it. I never get upset. It sometimes goes away for a day or two. I also eat only real food, nothing processed and eat low carb plus intermittent fasting. I also do breathing exercises. I don't let tinnitus ruin my life.

I developed my tinnitus one night laying in bed around three months ago. I have seen the ENT doctor multiple times; blood pressure is okay, taken meds which don't work, had AMSA sessions which don't work. Doctors says no wax blockage, pressure (although I feel it) or blocked fluid. I can't see what other avenue I can go down. Having said that, reading the message and seeing the video did make me feel like I am not alone. Best wishes to all of you.

ENT is a complete waste of time; first they put you on a 12/16-week waiting list and then all they do once you get to see them is check your hearing (waste of time). So-called doctors no nothing about tinnitus, which makes them worse than useless as well.

I totally disagree and I think that you've been seeing really bad doctors. The main reason I went to an ENT doctor was because of the tinnitus and that was the best thing that I ever did. The ENT practice that I go to is completely amazing and they have amazing doctors and there's also an audiologist in the back portion of the office. I only have tinnitus in one of my ears and I'm losing hearing. I was sent for an MRI and it turned out I have a tumor in my brain called an acoustic neuroma that right now is under observation because it's small. But it's also giving me a lot of other symptoms. I'm really glad that I went to the ENT doctor and I highly recommend this doctor. I don't know what city you are in but I'm in Philadelphia PA and if you would like a recommendation please let me know.

You are the first person to mention a slap on the ear. I believe that caused mine too. From an early age I was subjected to frequent hard slaps on the ear from my mother; occasionally hard enough to knock me off my feet. I was about ten years old when I discovered that not everyone heard a constant loud hissing all the time. So I've had it for over 70 years and it's getting worse. I also have very bad neck tension; I've had that since childhood too.

    • @miriamweller812
      @miriamweller812 Рік тому +2

Mine clearly seems coming from tension, since I can toy around with it with that.
When I tense my neck muscles or anyhting around the head, the tinnitus goes up immmensely, sometimes stay a bit stronger and highter, while slowly fading.
When I rub the sides of my ears to warm them up, this will give at least short term relief and so on.
Overall this of course goes along with stress, as some of my other symtpomes, including hurting teeth and pain in the neck and shoulders, as a doctor explained me once: those muscles from your back, crossing your neck up to your ears(!) are those which react very strong to stress.

Yes, STRESS is a major culprit in perception of tinnitus more loudly. I developed bilateral tinnitus a year ago at the age of 55. it is fluctuating with almost a fixed pattern, one day or two is high or very high, the following day or days low or even zero. Over and over again, the same pattern! ... I was told to avoid caffeine (classic tea & coffee), and salt, but I learned quitting those things made my tinnitus worse, because my brain interprets it as a stress. I learned all kind of stress have a negative effect on severity of my tinnitus (not necessarily always immediately, but sometimes a few days later), so I'm trying to avoid worries by taking the life as much easy as possible.

@@LevaniAslamazishvili-bz8gm Yes, I do have bilateral mild hearing loss with hyperacusis. I didn't know I had hearing loss until I got an audiogram. Recently I learned to use some sounds to mask my tinnitus (UA-cam is one of the best sources of different types of sounds made for tinnitus sufferers. Here is one of the best just as an example: www.youtube.com/@dalesnale). The best tone for me is around 10KH, I think this is the same frequency as my hearing loss because it completely masks my tinnitus and sometimes even helps diminish the severity of tinnitus the next day while I'm outside. So far, managing daily life stress and sound therapy have been the best solutions to cope with tinnitus properly.

Ive had tinnitus caused by unprotected exposure to industrial and mining machinery for approximately 45 years.
It is very pleasing to view your very informative and caring presentation about a common affliction that was not generally recognised or really taken seriously in the past by many heath care workers for the delertirious effects it can have on individual sufferers.
On a personal level I recognised long ago that there is no complete cure for tinnitus and applied my usual general philosophy of - "if after examination of the facts I cannot change things for the better or do anything about it then I'll just have to accept and live with it ".
Consequently I just trained myself not to think about it. Its always there in the background. The high pitched scream of jet engines with an undertone of a heavy diesel engine under load at high revs.
I first noticed it when I read the title to the video that came up on u tube and its increasing in volume as I write this.
I almost never think about it now and it only usually appears when its brought to my attention in one form or another.
The factors such as stress and different foods do play a part but its thinking and becoming conscious of tinnitus can make it an interference for me.
So I just find some form of mental distraction and put it out of my mind. Its not easy at times such as now but over time you can relegate it to a place of very low sigificance in your life by accepting its permanence whilst ignoring its precence.
Easier said than done but given time it works. Hope it helps.
Now I'll just have to stop watching videos about tinnitus!

Interesting you say that pulsatile tinnitus could be something more serious and should be checked out urgently. After waiting 18 months for an ENT appointment at my local hospital (mainly a referral for viral labyrinthitis brought on by Covid), I mentioned my pulsatile tinnitus to the consultant and asked if it was a sign of a more serious underlying condition. He said it was quite common and nothing to worry about. I felt relatively relieved at the time, although I did wonder if he was just fobbing me off. I've had normal tinnitus on and off since as far as I can remember (in my 20s, and I'm now in my 60s) - the usual ringing, buzzing, humming - but I just learned to live with it so it's never really bothered me. Since I got Covid in 2020 though it has gotten a lot louder and more varied. The pulsatile tinnitus pre-dates Covid but that's definitely worsened too. Covid is the virus that keeps on giving. Think I might get a second opinion on the pulsatile tinnitus. Might have to go private though as I don't fancy waiting another 18 months for an appointment. So much for our NHS.

I don't watch TV as my wife can hear a fly fart, which results in the volume on the TV being too low for me! I am in my 70s now and a carer for my wife, so I am on the go all day/every day! I have gave up hope in finding a cure, as there isn't one! Yet maybe once every two months the tinnitus stops for a day or two - My wife can tell when I haven't got ringing in my ears, so obviously I am a jackal and Hine!

I am 50, I'm a long term tinnitus sufferer of 25 years. in 2 weeks I am about to undergo my 3rd round of Tympanoplasty following chronic cholesteatoma that was missed for 20 years... Maybe obvious to some, but Viagra and its copies, magnify tinnitus to an overwhelming level. There is definitely a pay-off but the noise can be a little bit too consuming. So my advice is, if you are not 'on top' of your tinnitus avoid ED medicines.

Good stuff Matthew. Very interesting and very helpful. Let me thank you by giving you a useful tip about your presentation. STOP waving your hands around. If you wrote an essay about this subject, would you underline every word? Of course not because if you emphasise the importance of everything, then you have not emphasised anything, so keep your hands out of sight, or at least keep them still until there is a word or phrase that would have more impact if you emphasised it with an appropriate hand gesture, You could rehearse the script before you record it, to decide what hand gestures are appropriate and which words or phrases merit a hand gesture. If no hand gesture is appropriate, and you can't keep your hands still, sit on them.

Ive had tinnitus for 5 years in both ears due to ear infection and noise exposure and my advice is don't let it get worse with the biggest offender being ototoxic medication which in my three experiences has made my tinnitus sharper, louder and rawer/ more piercing and, although after 2 - 3 months it subsided to a base/ manageable level, each time it failed to settle back down to what it was before taking the medication.
Second offender is sudden sharp loud noises which I have had quite a few of but never lasting damage/ always settled back down to what it was previously after 2 - 3 weeks, sometimes its only lasted hours then settled back down (I carry foam ear plugs to go out and if I'm going somewhere I suspect could be loud I also take ear defenders).
Second bit of advice is make sure that you don't have wax in your ears or near or on you eardrum as in my experience multiple times after getting wax out my tinnitus has become almost inaudible (wax removed via an ENT using manual extraction as apparently microsuction is too loud near the eardrum which can aggravate tinnitus). As well using distilled water ear drops put in a glass pipette bottle helps to remove ear wax.
I have experienced severe tinnitus in both ears for extended periods but as for my tinnitus now my left ear is pretty inaudible its only when I lay on the pillow is when it becomes louder and bothersome but I can sleep through it, however my right ear is mild/ moderate and when I lay on the pillow it becomes quite severe, although I can still sleep through it depending on how tired I am (I sleep with 9000Hz white noise and a fan).
The best way I can describe the tinnitus in my right ear when not laying down is by using audionotch's tuner on 9550Hz at 1% volume and computer volume at 24 although the tinnitus doesn't sound quite like that and its not as pronounced as the pure tone/ the tinnitus has more of a dispersed effect.

Stress is a definite contributor to tinnitus. I have sensitivity in my left ear with some high frequency hearing loss as well in same ear. I went to a concert in early June, and came out of it with tinnitus. I figured it would only last a few days, but it went on for 3 months. It DID start to go away near the end of August, but then I got covid. That's when it came back worse than before. My doctor has me booked for an MRI to see if there are any underlaying conditions. My BP is generally around 130/80 and I'm 62 years old, so that's no much of a factor. (It's usually around 125/75, but my tinnitus has my stress and anxiety levels up). I'm looking into CBT and relaxation technics to help me cope. Your videos are very good and helpful! Thank you!

I found that first reducing, then eliminating carbohydrates has made a spectacular and decisive difference to my tinnitus. On a scale of 1 - 10, my tinnitus rarely went below a 6; after removing carbs from my diet, I average a 2 - 4. Stress is a factor, as is ear wax; but I can't find a doctor or audiologist anywhere that will do anything about the build-up; in spite of using wax-softening measures, everyone refuses to syringe or suction my ears for fear of exacerbating the problem! Stress, I can work with. Carbs aren't a problem. But ear wax? That's a bloody nuisance!

I do not get the pounding pain anymore, but the tinnitus can be overwhelming. The MD said that there is new research being published exploring the correlation between migraine and tinnitus:the headache will not occur, but the tinnitus will ( I think of it in the same way an amputee will feel the amputated limb though it is nit there). I view the tinnitus as a manifestation of a painless migraine.

Never happened. I still have it to this day.

I researched it in my own & came to conclusion this is what I had to live with.
A relative if my husband said that her sister also had it & when she went check it out with her Dr. he told her there was nothing that could be done medically for her.
So now I guess it saved me a lot of unnecessary costs to seek medical advice to no avail.

I only have it in one ear. I went to a hearing aid place and she said I had fluid behind both eardrums(and some wax in the ear that was ringing) I went to ent and he prescribed prednisone. I was having pain as well. I took a zpaK that ends tomorrow and I begin the presnisone tomorrow… I pray for everyone suffering and a cure

I’ve found that consuming sodium dramatically increases my tinnitus, usually within 15-20 minutes. So obviously I’m now following a super low sodium diet. I still have really bad spikes some days, often related to stress, but occasionally for no reason I can figure out.

I am 62, I am always being told to get hearing aides, that is the only way I am going to help my Tinnitus, but when I saw they hurt, I mean my ears hurt. MRI says they don't have anything wrong with them, so guess they don't hurt, but THEY DO HURT!! Here is my list of complications with my hearing: 24/7 buzzing (my crickets) which I have had for over 8 years, recently I have a new sound along with the buzzing which is clicking. The clicking is not as constant, but seems to be getting there. Both ears burn, both ears feel like a river is running through them. Very much worse if I have a pain anywhere in my body or if I am stressed or tired or when things are quite. So when I say mine hurt bad, I mean I literally can not hear myself think.

Nope, you're not the only one. I am very sensitive to the newest powerful cell phones that have cordless charging and MagSafe strong battery in the phone. So I took back the newest iPhone and I took back the hi-end Samsung with all the fancy and powerful do-dads. And then I bought mid-range Samsung Galaxy A53 5G and it seems to be okay. I never use my bluetooth earbuds anymore and when I talk on my cell phone I hold it away from my head. Just...fyi.

Hey Animal, normally with any ear related condition I would expect to see the same thing between your ears, whether that be hearing level, tinnitus, etc. as both of your ears are attached to the same body, should have had the same noise exposure, and therefore should be similar in terms of their function. So if a difference is demonstrated its worth a check up to see what may be causing that. Thanks for watching and for the great question, Matthew

Mine started with a gum abscess. That was decades ago. The abscess was treated successfully with a course of antibiotics. The tinnitus stayed. I am trying a low carbohydrate diet, intensifying nutrient dense foods and intermittent fasting. Quite successful at dropping weight. Had far, far too much anxiety over the years and an Asperger's diagnosis, which accounts for some of it. The cortisol levels for a start. An intense in-family stressor hadn't helped! Now I'm able to concentrate on my own health, rather than someone else's, there may be some hope that other problems may diminish with the stress and a decent diet. Will keep up with it anyway.

@@etdmike Well, I have hereditary X-Chromosome Linked Ichthyosis for a start which is normally put down to a sulfatase deficiency. the females in the lineage pass it on and only the males get the Ichthyosis. How that affects everything else nutritionally is up for question and I've taken part in some studies regarding behavioural characteristics. As to whether the deficiency, the Aspergers and Ichthyosis plus a tremor are all as intertwined as they seem to be, given that they all appear in the lineage down from my grandmother is something that I am, of course, interested in. I had a skin infection years ago which was treated with intravenous antibiotics during a stay in hospital. I've concentrated on my microbiome ever since and only recently been able to concentrate fully. Altering aspects of my diet gradually just to see what has the better effect. Of course, this takes a great deal of time, diligence and effort. What I've done recently seems to have had a calming effect.
