I have had 24/7 tinnitus since 1982. I also have multiple health conditions where tinnitus is a potential side effect. The major factor of bothersome tinnitus for me is anxiety and stress. I guess I need to monitor my other conditions to see which conditions exacerbate my tinnitus and make changes in my behavior to reduce its severity.
I have had tinnitus all my life and it is one of my earliest memories. My sister is the same. Finally (after many years of being told there is no treatment) I have had a hearing test that confirmed hearing loss and recommended bilateral aids . I’ve talked to my sister and recommended she be tested as well. We both grew up thinking everyone heard the same noises. Mine never vary, never recede. My perception of it varies according to the attention I give and my level of concentration on other things it but ultimately it is a constant in my life. I would love to experience total silence.
@@adriennedunne1748 me too, I’m 70 and just got it, my husband has it to, been 2 years for him. We both are retired so we don’t get out much but when I do and I’m out and about the noise around me helps me not to pay attention to it. My husband tells me to just ignore it, I’m trying to learn how to do that.😢
Ever since I was a kid, I thought the saying "silence is deafening" was real. 😢 In 2009 I was diagnosed with Fibromuscular Dysplasia. It explains a lot, but there is no cure.

My Mom had Tinnitus for over 40 years! She once told me that the noise use to sound like a plane in the backyard. She also had many other issues. HB/eye problems, Kidney infections, heart problems, etc. She was 89 years old when she died. She was very loving to her Grand and Great grandchildren. She died 6/1/2023. I was her caregiver for the last 3 years and was happy she was out of her misery. It was difficult to see her suffer because she was really a nice person who loved us and our children. The last thing was when she turn and fell off the bed and broke her elbow! My Dad died afterwards on June 14th. He stayed until she left. He use to cook for her and make sure she had breakfast. He also had the same issues except the Titinnus. He was 94 yrs. His memory was excellent! He would remember back in 1940's! They were married for 68 yrs and had 7 children. I learn Pure Bio Energy method of healing that did give her an ease with the noise.
2008 went to an Alan Holdsworth concert in a small venue, and it was LOUD. Woke next morning with the ringing that has never gone away. Use ear plugs at concerts. My daughter who took me there had no protection, but I think her younger age made her less susceptible and she had no ill effects, but she did learn to use ear plugs at future concerts because of what happened to me. I can hear it even when I cut the grass against the sound of the lawnmower. The worst thing you can do is pay attention to it; you need to engage and concentrate on other things and soon it fades into the background. But as soon as someone mentions it BANG there it is in full force. The things that make it worse for me are SUGAR, SALT and LACK OF SLEEP.
#6 -- Thinking about it. Did anyone else's tinnitus get louder just watching this video? Mine did because I've learned to tune it out but when I think about it, it's extremely loud. When Im not thinking about it, I forget its there. Crazy right? It's because I've lived with it much longer than most people. I also seem not to have lost my hearing as severely as some. I've had tinnitus for 42 of my 45 years it started when I had sever fluid buildup in my inner ears due to allergies and then two operations. One at 3 another at 5. It was only at the age of 21 that I realized not everyone heard what I did. I would love to know what silence sounds like and Id imagine not hearing the 16800K in my right ear and 15500K in my left would be a stress relief that I couldn't possibly comprehend. That said, I've learned to live with it and around it.
Tinnitus moved into my life and has made itself comfortable 24/7/365 without ever giving me a break in 2019. Mine is a buzzing with periodic loud ringing.
I'm 68. have had tinnitus for 15 years from TMJ, surgery was recommended but not guaranteed to work, some days are better than others, but it will never go away
Tinnitus is a gold mine for audiologists. Their "treatments' are actually very effective for lightening that heavy wallet you are carrying around. Not much of anything for your tinnitus. What else would you expect from the same people who happily sell you a pair of hearing aids for $5,000 that cost them $500 to source from their supplier.
And the manufacturer makes hearing aids for literally pennies apiece, once the electronic chips are mass manufactured. I should know, I work for a semiconductor company. They make like 500% (sometimes much more) profit on stuff like this.
I used to think I was going mad? Now I know it was not madness but bloody tinnitus!! I'm shocked that sooo many people are suffering, thanks for the stream it somehow helps me cope
I cant recommend neck strengthening exercises enough. As simple as laying on your back and tuck your chin to your chest. Aim for 45 seconds and set and aim to build up strength to hold for 3 mins per set. Hope it helps.
I drink no caffeine nor do I take any pain killers although i was a Alcoholic for 27yrs. I've been sober for 12YRS and 10mths now . I've had tinnitus for 4 years now . Most a high pitch squeal in my right ear . Mine is at its worse when I awake from a sound sleep . I've gotten to the point that I can mellow it out with music or by writing poetry and short life stories . Sometimes I catch myself looking for the sound . I pray for a cute for us all daily . GOD BLESS YOU ALL
i have the same. An ORL doctor fkd me up with pills and started the tinnitus only in 1 ear. After medical examination they discovered my inner ear worm bacillia or how its called, the bacillia its allmost dead due to poor genetic condition+ meds. Now im taking some treatments maybe i can stop or even recover some.
Man, you are speaking my whole life! Caffeine, nicotine, salt, - you cannot over salt a baked potato- used to be heavier on the alcohol. Backed totally off that. Long term medications, lack of sleep- difficult to sleep during the day. I work nights. Guess I’ll never get rid of tinnitus!!
I too thought it was just normal since I had it since childhood. Never experienced silence. It mostly goes away with distraction of of daily life, but it can be hard to fall asleep. At those times I use the 9-10 hr recordings for tinnitus blocking. My favorites are crickets and crackling fire. Can't hear the tinnitus through them and go right to sleep.
As far as ailments go, Tinnitus is pretty benign. I was in a Rock Band for 35 years which has left me with significant hearing loss and acute Tinnitus. Mine is quite loud sounding like a swarm of crickets with metal wings. The sound flanges and slightly changes frequency making it quite invasive in a quiet environment. The best relief is a white noise generator
At night it is always quiet less busy and the day is always louder, this is why you notice it more at night time. I read a head massage for 10 min helps with it. Worth a try.
I don’t think this is true because I work in a pin drop quiet setting during the day and the tinnitus is still significantly less loud during the day than at night still. I actually have a theory that sleeping calms the tinnitus down for a period of time and that’s why the sound is less loud during the day and picks up as evening approaches. I notice also that if I don’t sleep well, the tinnitus during the day will be louder and if I sleep really well, I can hold off the evening loudness for a longer time. So I do think there is a correlation to sleep.
I have hearing aids but my tinnitus started when I got my first Covid vaccine shot. It took about 3 months to calm down. Now it flares when I have stress or anxiety, or am around loud noises or music.
Could be a coincidence. I've had 3 covid shots, and I've had covid 3 times. All years ago. No tinitus until Sept this year. I'm thinking it could be stress related. I guess covid shots and covid do cause stress, but my stress has multiple causes, none relating to covid.
Unfortunately going to ENT and Audiologist and General Practioner did zero. No answers however I also have been on HRT to assist with my headaches. No one as of yet as helped with why I got sudden.
When l lost my hearing on my right ear, my ent doctor told me to take vitamin b3, stay away from noisy places. He also told me that my hearing on my left ear was decreasing. That was his help. So, my question is: what is the point of going to an ent, audiologist if they have no cure, except suggesting hearing aids..l lost my hearing on left ear as well 2 years later. My tinnitus sound like airplane engine, 24/7. God help us!!
I have tinnitus 24/7 but very rarely notice it as I just dont think about it. However it does get intrusive and quite loud when someone mentions it or as in this instance it pops up on my UA-cam feed as an informational video. As it was by Dr Cliff's channel I decided to watch and possibly learn something new and helpful. Not a good decision as I now have jet engines screaming in my head and its going to be a long flight until I can get my brain to lower the volume. Im not complaining as its just part of life that you need to accept and learn to live with. I have had friends who didnt have hearing problems or tinnitus but have passed away. So although it can be annoying its not a big deal in the bigger picture and I find its best not to think about it and then it fades into the background. Takes effort and practice to stop your brain hearing unwanted sounds from the past but it can work most of the time and tinnitus only becomes apparent when under some stressful situations or when I read or hear the word.
@@shorty7363 Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. However my tinnitus doesn't bother me at all usually as I don't think about it. It's only when it is mentioned in conversation that I become aware of it. I've had it for over 40 years and it's not going to disappear anytime soon. I don't worry about anything that I can't control or change so I put it out of my mind. Tinnitus is generated by our brains which can be trained to ignore or reverse some perceptions. E.G. mirror imaging. It's just mind over matter.
Sounds like (no pun intended) like we're experiencing the same things. Mine is a steady whine sound and unless I think about it I don't pay much attention to it, and I'm able to sleep just fine without noise generators. All that said, I'd kill for just five minutes of complete silence!
I distinctly remember when it started back in the 1990s in my mid-thirties. One morning I woke up and it was like someone flipped a switch and it started. Its been there ever since. Learned to tune it out.
Gabapentin gave me tinnitus back in the 1990s and I haven’t had heard anything clearly in my left ear since, and the only time I don’t hear it is when I sleep.
30 years ago a idiot at work coughed in my face and the next day i woke with a fever that turned into dual ear and throat infection that was treated with antibiotics, after healing high pitch ringing began both ears louder in right ear because DR said it was a level 3 infection and left was a level 2 with ringing slightly less, but now I have a roaring to add to that. Ear Drs. said practice healthy diet exercise should help, it has not, it's worse, think often about "checking out"....
These things are triggers that can make Tinnitus worse , but on the flip side some of these same things can make Tinnitus better for some , some peoples Tinnitus is better after drinking alcohol and also some people say their Tinnitus is worse after a good night's rest . Tinnitus is very unpredictable and very different for everybody , and alot of times it's just bad luck that's worsening Tinnitus
I started having tinnitus in my left ear in 2018 and it was accompanied by vertigo. It was so bad back then that I would stand up and immediately the room would spin. Went to the doctor, they thought it was Meniere's but could find nothing on a MRI to support this theory. Since then I've lost nearly 50% of my hearing in my left ear but the vertigo stopped. I've been to a doctor at a hospital about it, and they just tell me there's nothing they can do for me. I hate living with this because no one understands how rough or annoying it can be. I have days where i cannot be around anyone because even the slightest louder sound on my left side will hurt my ear. I have a friend with Tourette's, and her tics are loud screeching noises. Any time I have a severe day I cannot be around her. I don't have the heart to tell her that when it's really bad her tics actually hurt me. I hate this and wish they'd find some way to find a cure for this. There has to be something to help with it!
Tinnitus is a pretty crappy thing to suffer from - but I have found all the things that you mentioned in this video have an effect on my tinnitus in one form or another. If I drink too much caffeine my tinnitus freaks out and its the same with booze too, although fortunately I dont drink too much. But also if I dont sleep too well its the same thing - loud tinnitus. I wouldnt wish condition thing on anyone - its really not great.
It's definitely a full-body symptom that can be can be caused by so many things. It can almost always be tied back to sleep, stress, medication, and hearing.
1. Caffeine and Nicotine (increases blood pressure) 2. Common medications (pain killers, antibiotics) 3. Alcohol and salt 4. Poor sleep 5. Leaving hearing loss untreated
Thank you for mentioning medication. I used a poweful antibiotic for a rare and severe lung infection daily for 7+ months. I was clearly told beforehand that the medicine is ototoxic and may harm the cochlea. And that's what happened, I got tinnitus that's rather loud at times. For some reason people still tend to say that it's because of stress, pre-menopause or whatever they just happen to come up with. I've noticed that for me the most important thing is sleep. If I sleep well, I can cope with my tinnitus, better than I thought when it started. I had suicidal thoughts but not anymore. I'll now pay more attention to caffeine intake etc. Thank you for the informative video!
I've been dealing with tinnitus since I was around 10-12 years old (now 62), it's very high pitched. The first thing I noticed was the quieter things are in a room, the louder it is. Because of this, I started playing environmental sound CD's at night. I found what works best for me is, the sound of ocean waves, no music, no birds, just waves at low volume, full bass and low treble. Been using this since my mid 20's and sleep good 99% of the time. That said, I've noticed my tinnitus has gotten worse since getting the covid vaccine, but I have not caught covid.
Same here, had it all my life since a young age with no obvious cause, and is a high frequency whistle on both sides - presume this is more common than I thought.
I'm almost unvaccinated, and I have had COVID multiple times. The reason I'm unvaccinated is I'm allergic to Polyethylene. I'm also a US veteran, and the VA health service sent us all a memo in 2020 telling us not to take the vaccine if we're allergic to any of the ingredients! I said I was almost unvaccinated, because in the day, in order to keep my job I was required to be vaccinated even though I knew I was allergic - I almost died.
@@ladyalaina42 I'm a veteran, and the Veteran's Administration told all of us that if we were allergic to any of the "jabs" ingredients, "Do not take the vaccine." I'm allergic to polyethylene.... If the US government told us that, then I wonder why so many active duty personnel who refused to get vaccinated had problems for not being vaccinated?
You didn't mention autoimmune tinnitus. Diseases that been damage the TMJ can lead to this type of tinnitus: psoriatic arthritis, axial spondylitis, ankylosing spondylitis. There is also autoimmune tinnitus w/o spodyloarthropathies.
My Tinnitus has increased greatly over the past 2 months and I don't know why. Many times a day I have the sensation in both ears, at the exact same time, many times during the day, of a squeezing pressure-like sensation that hurts and for a second or two causes dizziness. This is a radical departure from my decades of Tinnitus which has always been a low buzzing sound. SInce the symptoms are a radical departure from normal, I best go see the doctor.
Mine comes & goes. Recently it was triggered by a low frequency rumble that's been vibrating my house. Others could hear & feel it at times, but it was persistent for me. Wearing ear plugs shoved in too far can trigger it too.
I used to have tinnitus so loud that I couldn't sleep because of the noise. When I went from a high sugar and carb diet to the keto diet, I lost it. I think it took about 2 weeks before tinnitus stopped after changing my diet😌
Exercise, LC diet and Intermittent fasting really works for me no sugar in take. Please watch Dr Alan Mandell on UA-cam. How to Naturally Get Rid of Tinnitus.
@@charlottepedersen-pw8bm I had it for a year I think, then like I said it went after a few weeks after my new diet. I still have it but I don't notice it unless I listen out for it :)
I'm 75 and have had it since about age 26 , non stop. Had a low ringing on and off before that. How bad is it? Real bad. Loud , most of the time. Been taking Gaba 750 mg. once a day for about ten months now. Also, have gotten the blood pressure under control. One of the two, or a combination of the both is working because the ringing/hissing sound is lower. Somedays, yes it's high. Who knows what triggers it? I wear ear protection while doing anything that makes loud noise. Loud noise always makes it worse. Also "wind." Riding with an open window in the car will make it worse later on in the day. I've heard pro and con about the supplement, Gaba. For me, I think it has given me some relief. I've had no side effects and it's inexpensive. So, whether it's my lower blood pressure, or the Gaba, I'll keep taking it. Took over 6 months of daily use to notice a lowering of the noise. Maybe it's all in my "head", huh? Anyway, hear's my advice to everyone that's going crazy because of the constant noise in their head: Look at it as the cross you have to carry. Life isn't fair . . . period. Most of my friends are in the cemetery. Others are crippled. Some in nursing homes. I'm a Vietnam combat vet and life-long rough carpenter. I'm lucky to be alive, that's the way I look at it. God bless. Stay strong.....

Thank you very much for your wonderful write-up,what you have said is so right and comforting as I too am suffering terribly from tinnitus which off late has gone beyond bearing I don't know how I can continue with this . Thank you very much for the encouragement as I pray that someone somewhere will come out with a cure .God bless
@@colinpeacock7648 Some reading this will think, "Yeah, that's easy for him to say." No, it's not easy. Living with a roaring sound in my head has never been easy, but I've learned a few things about it and have learned to live with it. It's not just the tinnitus that's bothering those that have it. There's other things bothering you too and these things build to a point that just plain seems to run over you. It wears you down. The constant noise in your head seems like the worst and seems the loudest when I am letting other things bug me too. The trick is , there are times when you are actually not aware of it and the constant noise in your head is not an issue. Ask yourself "Why?" The reason is not that the sounds in your head are lower, or there's lots of background noise masking it, it's that your mind is preoccupied with something else. If those times do in fact happen to you, that's all the proof you need to teach yourself to beat it. Now, that said, I must admit I am a religious person . I truly believe God wants me to be at least in good spirits through this endeavor called life. But, the bad guy runs this planet and wants us all miserable and wants me to dwell on my problems, which makes me more miserable. This tinnitus thing is really, all in our head. As hard as it is, just form a habit of "not" thinking about it. It's not going to get me down. Thank God for the blessings we do have. There are many. Look at the problem in this other way and message this vid 6 months from now and tell me if you are doing better. God bless! You can and will beat it.
@@davidlarson9975 well said. My T has gone off the hook a few weeks ago, I have no idea why. I sat each day for an hour wondering why the sudden change. I have had it for over 20 years. When I first heard it i was sleeping in a quiet room in the basement. It was late at night and I woke up hearing this ringing. I ran out of the room to get away from it but it followed me. A few days later I went to my ENT doctor. I still remember his words, “there is nothing we can do”. At the time I thought it was quite an irresponsible thing for him to say. Lately the tinnitus has gotten louder and at a slightly different pitch in one ear. Very frustrating. I love dancing, hiking, skiing and am fearful my balance will become affected. I moved to Colorado several years ago to enjoy the great outdoors. On one of my hikes west of Nederland where there was no noise, all I heard was the T screaming in my head. I try to think the T is my friend.
I think tinnitus for me is due to food intolerances/allergies. I stopped all caffeine sources ie chocolate, coffee, black/green/mate tea even decaf and pulsatile/ringing tinnitus went away within days. Hearing came back to normal too. Another trigger is cinnamon. White chocolate was also a trigger even though it does not contain cocoa powder/caffeine. I think i’m intolerant to the entire cocoa bean, as white chocolate is made with cocoa butter.
I have had tinnitus for 40 years now, due too working in a loud factory! I turned to drink because the buzzing in my ears were so loud, I could not sleep! I had a hearing aid, but only used it when being with families and friends, because my ear hurt at the entrance of my ear! I have excepted that there is no cure, so one has to handle the frustration of the buzzing! I can go weeks with no buzz/ringing of the ears, then I receive a spike that lasts for weeks! I do not add salt to my food, but I do drink a lot of coffee. This might be a coincident - But each day around 5pm, after tea time, I lay on the sofa facing east, when out of the blue my tinnitus starts up, yet once I stand up and start working around the house, the tinnitus stops? My spikes of tinnitus has improved over the years due to me creating drinks that I think helps! I stay clear of sugar, I use honey, lemon, cider vinegar, cumin/black pepper, turmeric, garlic, avocado, nuts, yet stay clear of red meat and take away! Use traffic light system on food packages when shopping! Keep away from the red! Doctors don't have all the answers to our body malfunctioning - I love using UA-cam and finding answers to my defects/ailment/s!
Love the positivity. Looks like ur managing it well. I strongly suggest using waxsol and self head massages that can alleviate stress and tinnitus. There are many of videos of this on UA-cam. It has helped me over the last few days after a huge spike in the constant ringing in my left and slight whistling in my right ear when I hear high pitched sounds.
I’ve had tinnitus for many years, and i had learned to live with it. I thought EVERYONE heard those sounds when it was silent. But, in 2021, I had THOSE vaccines and within days, my tinnitus had become louder, especially the spikes. It has never got better. I wish I had NEVER had those wretched injections. They were/are poisonous.
It wasn't the vaccine. You probably got COVID and were asymptomatic. There is a link between tinnitus and COVID but nothing to support a link between tinnitus and the vaccine.
I've been advised to take Duloxetine (SNRI) but it has tinnitus as a common side effect. The doctor was telling me that it was related to the possible increase in blood pressure and it wasn't a direct but rather an indirect possible side effect. They told me that a lot of common medications have tinnitus in the side effect list because of the same reason. Have you had any experience with clients using this type of antidepressant? Any further input on the topic you could give me? Thanks!
I am right now reading a prescription of side effects from Duloxetine wondering if it has caused my Tinnitus to increase so dramatically. I've been off of the drug for 4 weeks and still have worse Tinnitus.
Bupropion, the Doctor neglected to inform on side effects, of which, tinnitus is the most common side effect, as reported by the manufacturer. Shame on this doctor.
Just curious - did you take his course? And what triggers did you come up with? Started the course with Lite version. Tried some sort of fasting for a few days. Timing was off since I had full blown anxiety situation. Think it was stress related big time.
Has anyone experienced a worsen of tinnitus from sound therapy in hearing aids. I suspect mine is. The more I turn them up the more hearing loss i experience. Specialists say no but here I am with louder tinnitus and more hearing loss.
I'm 57, had tinnitus for roughly 10 years, screaming whistle on the left, any kind of pressure makes it worse, headaches, stress, colds, ect. I don't notice it during the day as family always have a TV or radio on but as Time has gone on I've invested in a sound Box to distract myself at night. If it gets bad I pop my ear, put your finger in your ear and pull it out quickly pulling the tunnel to one side as you go making it pop, it helps me for a while!!!
It's just on one side? So was (is) mine, and the cause was a vestibular schwonnoma. Have you been checked for that? I subsequently had brain surgery to remove it, and lost the hearing on that side (which was inevitable anyway, just from the tumor itself), but the tinnitus still remains. The goal was accomplished though: get the schwonnoma out so it doesn't kill me! The tinnitus isn't horrible.
Coffee noooooooo! Tinnitus forty years. High pitched...it can be almost unbearable. Mostly I have found that when I am focused on something it is not there. The worst thing Is when my surroundings are quiet. No hearing loss at 73. Vertigo. Have tried every diet and fasting over the years. Doesn't seem to make a difference. This was a very interesting video for me. I have seen many and this is the first that talked about the don'ts! Smart cookie there!
@@janetcorbin2642that's really interesting ! i suffer from Tinnitus and wonder if there is any chance of a cure. i haven't seen a specialist yet but I think i need to arrange it.
"Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and salt..." I don't do two of those at all, any more, those are the alcohol and nicotine. I HAVE noticed that my tinnitus seems to worsen dramatically when I am horridly dehydrated. I am also starting to wonder about the role parasites might play.
My tinnitus volume spiked after my stroke and covid shot. Alcohol at night calmed my nerves and seemed to silence the ringing…. After my stroke, I gave up cigarettes and cut alcohol down to one beer a day, developed insomnia, now I’ve got ringing like crazy 24/7 and use expensive hearing aids, they do help but I do miss bourbon at night, tobacco too.
I have zero doubt I caused mine. Musician, loud stereo in my cars, concerts. I did it all. My tinnitus is like a freight train, louder in my right ear. Never ever mentioned it to my docs, since figured since there is no cure, I might as well just get used to it. I do have severe back and neck issues and I take a muscle relaxer before bed which puts me out, but sometimes wake up at 4am and then it's hard to get the train into the station so I can get back to sleep. But inevitably I do. Anyway, should have used ear protection, but should'a, would'a, could'a. I'm 64 now, so we'll see how much longer I have to deal with it.
I've always had it as far as I can remember. And it used to eb and flow. Recently has gotten so loud. Then I can't ignore it or push it to the background. This constant ringing in my ears is driving me crazy.
I’ve had tinnitus for 6 years now, it never gets better. I must admit when it first started I contemplated suicide because of the constant sound but I have slowly gotten used to it and now only notice it when it gets quiet at night but I’m able to sleep 8-10 hours uninterrupted and awake refreshed and never really notice the tinnitus until later in the day, and again it’s really only when it gets quieter at night. I have heard that hearing aids can help but all that did for me was amplify noise that I really didn’t want to hear so I prefer not using them at all. ✌️😎
With 6 brother and sister's we all have hearings aids.. Mom had them and her family members had them.Hear the plane flying over head all the time... Do my best on wearing protection.
Mine began in 2019 after an ear infection because of bronchitis. I have managed to understand it and I have taken some supplements that help and I have also taken my anti-biotic Z-Pak a few times which has helped to heal it somewhat for about one to two weeks. For the most part it is now healed and quiet, but the time it gets loud is while I am sleeping. After falling to sleep I will get up to use the bathroom, and it is loud. Later when I awake for the day it is dead quiet. Other times, it is quiet when I awake to use the bathroom, and then when I awake for the day it is loud. This is something that I cannot seem to control nor learn a process in which to control it. Time will tell.
I appreciate your videos. I have pulsatile tinnitus and have had every test imaginable with no diagnoses. Some days its maddening. I woke up from a surgery with it 5 years ago.
I think mine is originally from being on antidepressants for years. I noticed one spring after a particularly bad allergy season that my tinnitus got worse. If I could do one thing to improve my health And the health of other people it would be to find a cure for this. I'm just so tired of it, its been over 10 years.
A lot of research is now confirming that the same mechanisms/neurotransmitters responsible for anxiety and depression could also be why tinnitus is noticed more in some people than others. Tinnitus is much more intertwined with the brain overall than we initially thought.
What I hear is just like the ringing you get in your ears after a sudden loud noise such as a gunshot, but it never goes away. In general it never varies except a few times a month when it might change pitch and sound different but then it clears up after a minute or two and goes back to what it was. I have been diagnosed with mild hearing loss because when in noisy settings conversations are hard to make out. So ever since I've had this, I have made good use of hearing protection even if the noise isn't all that loud, but especially when using power equipment, even a vacuum, as well as in the movie theater (simple ear plugs). My tinnitus and hearing loss isn't getting any better but it appears not getting any worse either.
Same as mine, the problem with mine is that I can't even consult an ENT Doctor because my family couldn't afford it. And I love music a lot, esp. jazz music. Goodbye to music, such a shame.
My tinnitus was caused by a dramatic change in my pain medication. I had covid in 2020 which scarred my lungs and now I am on oxygen therapy, which affects my blood flow; I take medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, over active bladder, anxiety, pain management, advanced neuropathy and I suffer from the results of a malignant tumor on my right perotid gland, and I could still go on. Sleep is a "concept ", and I'm so tired, all the time. That's my reality. If not for my faith, I know I couldn't make it. Thanks for your videos and for listening.
My 6-year tinnitus has spiked a bit in recent weeks, I got a fairly healthy diet, work-out regularly and proper sleep. Right now I can live with it but my biggest concern is that it might increase in intensity over time. What kind of specialist do I need to visit first?
On videos about tinnitus I always pause the video and read all the comments because I figure the people commenting know more about tinnitus and the people doing the video because there are some very weird people doing videos about tonight's with all kinds of things that don't work like tapping the back of your head with spoons Etc but the comments you can really learn a lot cuz people have lived with a terrible situation for years and they've learned things that might help us all
Congratulations doctor! all this five is the reason that creating makes stronger Tinnitus,i can confirm this cuase this is my conclusion by living with tinnitus now and at list 10 years.possibly is the cause also. A great Thank you for your confirmation and scientific explanation 🙏🙏
Getting ANY phsician to even talk about tinnitus is a exercise in frustration. I actually had a specialist tell me "If it gets bad, go to the ER and tell them to check you in for inpatient phyciatric care !"
I've had it since early childhood. Never seem to interfere with my hearing. That was important in my family because my father was deaf and wore a hearing aid. So I just went along with the idea that they were voices. I can't speak their language but it songs like they are having fun.
I've had tinnitus since I was born - it only seems loud to me if I am in a room with no background noise - I have no issues with anything else & I regularly have my hearing tested every 2yrs - nothing has changed (I'm 52) I find if I am doing something I don't really hear the tinnitus - I know its there but it doesn't affect my life - I just tell people & they speak a little louder.
When I first had tinnitus, I was working in a welding shop with no headphones to cover my ears from the noise, I lost my hearing, after four months my hearing came back a little bit. I wish I had the money to visit an ENT Doctor. So broke.

Nice presentation, however, nothing really new learned. Does anyone know why tinnitus gets worse after a nap? I have read of a few others experiencing this in comments, but never discussed by the experts!? Good luck out there with all you experiencing tinnitus. I like my hearing aids with built-in AND adjustable masking sounds. Also, it can never be said enough times, ALWAYS protect your ears from loud noises by wearing adequate hearing protection when required!
Finally someone who has talked about the nap issue yes yes yes yes yes yes yes if I doze off and wake up with a start I get a horrific Spike which lasts for days also I get the same Spike when I wake up in the morning my spikes are always connected to a nap or sleep. Have already cut out all the offending things.
@@patfoley4888 I asked my audiologist and he has never heard of a spike in tinnitus after napping. Happens to me all the time; Hearing Aids with adjustable Tinnitus Masking helps me a great deal. I know they are expensive, but it is well worth the investment!
Thanks for your reply at least somebody else out there is afraid to take a nap. I've tried all the masking videos crickets. Etcetera and they all make it worse. There's nothing that will change it for the better. I've been told don't attach any emotion to it . Or focus on it. Challenging haha I watch all the success stories with great interest have tried all the things suggested but nothing moves it to a calmer state. Hanging in there not getting discouraged. You do the same I'm so glad the maskers helped you..😊
LOL, same here. I have lived with tinnitus ever since a few back to back concert events combined with irresponsible headphone use in the 70's/80's but hardly ever notice it in my day to day life. I only realize how loud it is when in a quiet environment and since I now usually fall asleep the moment my head hits the pillow, even gave up the life-long ritual of going to sleep with the radio on.
Amen. Better to stay away from this kind of stuff. It can really derail your progress and I have yet to find a single video on UA-cam after watching hundreds that actually helped me.
@@Martin-i4o8kyour so blessed to be able to fall asleep so quickly, I’ve had insomnia for the past 8 years and have to take a prescription sleeping pill. I’ve been researching how to cope with tinnitus that started a month ago. My husband also has it, he got it 2 years ago.🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@garnerjazz58bless you, i just got Tintinus about a month ago. I’ve been reading and watching Utube videos to help me deal with it. My husband got it 2 years ago and I saw how it changed him, he’s able to cope with it now, bless him. He told me it’s in the brain not the ear and that I need to just ignore it cause my brain will think I want to hear it. I’m scared cause I’ve seen what it has done to my husband. So I’m trying to find things to help me ignore it and to cope. I tried listening to the sound videos to help with sleep but I felt like it made it a bit louder, I sleep with a fan just to concentrate on the fan noise instead of my ear noise. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I've had my tinnitus for 2 decades. It never varies, only my attention to it varies. I notice you always call it 'tinnitus perception'... very interesting.
I’ve had Tinnitus for over a year and a half now and been to many tinnitus support group meetings. I have many noises ranging from low (like a fridge humming) to high (almost like a dog whistle) And learned more in just 7 and a half minutes watching this video. Thank you 🙏
I have it 6 years and 8 months a horrible symptom, stay safe everyone, get a hearing aid to mask it,,don't listen to loud music, best wishes for you all, 🙏
My ENT told me to cut down on caffeine, salt, and alcohol. I told him I normally have 2 cups of coffee in the morning. He replied have one”. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Just having one cup of coffee in the morning. I got used to it. But yet my tinnitus is still loud . And I think it’s because of poor sleep. Like she said “it’s a vicious cycle.” My tinnitus makes it hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep. And then if I don’t sleep my tinnitus gets worse! So for me I think it’s poor sleep that’s making my Tinnitus louder. I don’t drink alcohol. And I watch my salt intake.
What a great explanation! I've had tinnitus now for about 10 years. Mine sounds like a buzzing and it's intermittent. Can be quite bothersome at times usually noticeably worse when I'm tired. Based on your advice, it seems that there's a few things I'm doing that might be exacerbating the issue: I LOVE Coffee (Can easily get through 4-6 cups a day) I drink beer (not excessively and usually only at the weekends) I don't get enough sleep (pressures of family life mean late to bed and early starts) I use earphones - A LOT. Thanks for the video 👍
I have had tinnitus since 1993 after a car accident. Over the decades I have tried just about everything.I have it on both sides....however about 3 years ago I went to an NAET practitioner and it went away on my right side.NAET is an allergy elimination technique. It would have been nice if it all went away. The band plays on 24/7.....I have absolutely have not experienced silence for over 30 years now.Everything that was mentioned in this video I do not indulge in except the sleep part....however I do sleep way better with an Earthing mattress cover....so I get approx. 50 hours of Earthing every week. Cheers....!!!!
Sushmita: yes I have it too!!! Posted a comment previously with my matter, however, if you sleep slightly 'elevated' using pillows (even a travel cushion) it really helps to some degree - just try it 😴 ❤
I had suffered it from last year. Really bad experience. Can't concentrate because of it. Especially my left ear is buzzing all the time. Thankfully that my sleep routine is not affected.
Gluten, sugar, chocolate, and salt are what makes my tinnitus worse. Pretty sure this condition is directly related to MCAS. Also much worse in spring and autumn, when my allergy symptoms (histamine release) are worse.
It is interesting to hear an audiologist talk about tinnitus. I've been to three audiologists, each one more angry than the last. I was completely perplexed at why the audiologists were so annoyed with me - but they were, the last one in particular was just as angry as can be. They made it very clear I should go away and not come back, and not bother any more audiologists with my imaginary problem. So, I was lead to believe by these experiences that audiology has nothing to do with tinnitus.
I would never wish tinnitus on anybody, but I can't think of a way for those heartless audiologists to gain empathy other than have tinnitus afflict them!
I'm pretty sure that my hearing loss is the main cause for me. Only in one ear, and has worsened lately. Have also noticed more hearing loss in that ear!
AT 69 now, I have hissing like an old cassette tape thanks to years of working in / around rock and roll bands..... one doesn't think about it at the time when "young and crazy", but Father Time is kind to no one. I did not realize the connection with sodium and/or caffeine, both of which I am guilty of consuming. Hearing loss is known (-12db in left ear from right) with freq's above 6K rolling off dramatically, so I just deal with it. Knowing what it is and not stress guessing is the most important aspect in my view. Thanks!!
I appreciate that you have some suggestions or thoughts about tinnitus. I am annoyed at the term "perceived" noise. Tell my mind and body that the sound is not real. It is not perceived but real. I have been to 3 different ENT specialist for the suggestions of what to do with tinnitus. Each ends up with a monitor suggestion. The medical industry seems indifferent to the issue.
I did schedule an appointment with an audiologist and they try to sell me a hearing aid that was a lot of money. Instead of telling me what foods to avoid!
Only thing that makes mine worse it paying attention to it. 99% of the time I'm not even aware of it because I concentrate on what I am doing. Had it for over 20 years now and am just used to it by now.
Pretty similar for me. The more attention I give it, the more it runs with it. I try to ignore it like anything else running in the background (dishwasher, washing machine, etc.)
What does it mean when alcohol makes my tinnitus go away for a while? I only drink a little once a week. But the evening that I drink and the day after my tinnitus is gone.
What do I do when my ears ring all day everyday from the time I wake up to the time I fall asleep? It literally keeps me awake at night every night, so I have to take sleeping medication just to get a few hours of sleep! And this has been going on since I was 17 and I’m 41 going on 42 in August! I have tinnitus in my right ear that exactly falls into the rhythm of heartbeat since November 2021. I also feel a split in my right jaw every time I chew some food. Is there a cure for this?

I spent the entire day sawing wood on my property, using both earplugs and over-the-ear protection. By the end of the work day, I could hear even the faintest sounds. Later, I decided to test fire a rifle I’ve owned for years. Out of habit, I felt as though I had both earplugs and earmuffs on, but I forgot to actually put them in. With no hearing protection at all, I fired in an area that was about 75% enclosed. The blast was deafening, and the impact was unforgettable. I felt dazed and dizzy for a full minute, and the ringing in my ears lasted 4-5 hours before it finally faded. Now, days later, I have constant tinnitus. Some days are better than others, but I hear it all the time. It’s hard to believe one simple mistake has changed my life forever.
There appears to be some evidence to suggest contracting covid makes tinnitus worse. Mine definitely is as I now can hear it during the day as well as at night. The only other explanation is starting on Digoxin around the same time as getting covid?
My chronic tinnitus is self induced by loud music and Iv tried everything. Its like a hissing in the brain not the ears and now using hearing aids. Thing is a few glasses of vino calms it and even asprin helps temporarily. But caffeine and salt makes it peak. Ps the Tonal tinnitus ap is good.

I'm 71 years old and I've had tinnitus as long as I can renember. I wish some medical geniuses would discover something to get rid of it entirely.
I must try that.
For tinnitus? If so why does it help?I've had it for the last three years.
If everyone else could hear what we hear then I'm sure more research would have been done long ago and a cure found!

i have the same.
I also noticed that my tinnitus sometimes gets worse while I am sleeping, and I don't understand why this happens.

there are supplements you can take... taurine or benfotiamine.. look up dr. berg on here.
My tinnitus always gets louder in the evening and after night's sleep it gets less sometimes I can hear the blood pulse,
At night it is always quiet less busy and the day is always louder, this is why you notice it more at night time. I read a head massage for 10 min helps with it. Worth a try.
Same here! I even got scanned and they didnt see anything although my guess is they just looked for an obvious lump or such.
I've always had tinnitus. I believed it was normal. Cheers Rosemary Western Australia 73yrs
Listen white noise and try head massage with contact oil that makes your tinnitus sound lower

Fans or other noise machines like tv or radio are always on so I don't have to hear the ringing inside. Maybe try those things.🤷

Thank you for being just about the only doctor or person to present this information. Most of the other stuff turns out to be clickbait.
From the comments it looks like everything under the sun causes it. We're screwed.
It's definitely a full-body symptom that can be can be caused by so many things. It can almost always be tied back to sleep, stress, medication, and hearing.
1. Caffeine and Nicotine (increases blood pressure)
2. Common medications (pain killers, antibiotics)
3. Alcohol and salt
4. Poor sleep
5. Leaving hearing loss untreated
Yes leaving it untreated
And on money too much now days the way it is
I can't have caffeenie
I have to watch what I eat
I am on a diet
Mine is constantly there .has been there since I was 10yrs old /and at 70 its worse than ever..
That said, I've noticed my tinnitus has gotten worse since getting the covid vaccine, but I have not caught covid.
mRNA “vaccines” have caused a lot of problems, many of them much more serious that tinnitus. Don’t get any more boosters.
The jab has ruined my life plus did not prevent getting covid.
@@ladyalaina42 I'm a veteran, and the Veteran's Administration told all of us that if we were allergic to any of the "jabs" ingredients, "Do not take the vaccine." I'm allergic to polyethylene....

I got tinnitus after getting sick from the Wuhan virus.
Put up with tinitus for decades and hearing my pulse is fun too..went to doctors for help. Lots of tests. No help have t been back..
My tinnitus was triggered by gluten. Took me a lot of trial and error to work it out. I’ve given up grains and no tinnitus.
Thats tremendous
And grains don’t bother me but onions and lentils - just horrible spikes in my tinnitus.
For me it's to much eggs and dairy

OMG- foods that may increase/give tinnitus!? This deserves a whole video of its own 😮
I’ve had tinnitus for many years, and i had learned to live with it.
Mine got louder after as well. I went to the ENT and he scoffed at the idea that it was the cause.
Definitely poison. I'm sorry
Mine got much more louder after I got COVID.
Vaccines were the biggest money laundering scam of all time
I've been advised to take Duloxetine (SNRI) but it has tinnitus as a common side effect.

"Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and salt..."
I don't do two of those at all, any more, those are the alcohol and nicotine.
I’m sorry.😢
This constant ringing in my ears is driving me crazy.
how did it get worse? i hope you are doing better now
I’ve had tinnitus for 6 years now, it never gets better.
A friend and I took antidepressants for years, now we both have it, she a month before mine in 2022
A lot of research is now confirming that the same mechanisms/neurotransmitters responsible for anxiety and depression could also be why tinnitus is noticed more in some people than others.

So broke.

LOL, same here. I have lived with tinnitus ever since a few back to back concert events combined with irresponsible headphone use in the 70's/80's but hardly ever notice it in my day to day life. I have had it for 40 years, it is loud, but I only notice it when someone brings up the subject of tinnitus.
Do you have a video on signs or symptoms of meniers disease please.
What a great explanation!
I've had tinnitus now for about 10 years. Mine sounds like a buzzing and it's intermittent.
Can be quite bothersome at times usually noticeably worse when I'm tired.
Based on your advice, it seems that there's a few things I'm doing that might be exacerbating the issue:
I LOVE Coffee (Can easily get through 4-6 cups a day)
I drink beer (not excessively and usually only at the weekends)
I don't get enough sleep (pressures of family life mean late to bed and early starts)
I use earphones - A LOT.
Where do you get an earthing mattress?
Sushmita: yes I have it too!!! Posted a comment previously with my matter, however, if you sleep slightly 'elevated' using pillows (even a travel cushion) it really helps to some degree - just try it 😴 ❤
I had suffered it from last year. Really bad experience. Can't concentrate because of it. Especially my left ear is buzzing all the time. Thankfully that my sleep routine is not affected.
How do you get rid of ear fullness? Also, can you get fluid behind eardrum from sinus rinse? Thanks
I had a concussion in June, the tinnitus is there. Sometimes it really ramps up for no evident reason.
One of the best explanations on this subject I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this!
I did schedule an appointment with an audiologist and they try to sell me a hearing aid that was a lot of money.
Instead of telling me what foods to avoid!
Talk about pulsatile tinnitus. Caused by abnormalities of the carotid artery or jugular venous systems.
Thanks!
I hope I can be the same eventually.

I have tinnitus in my right ear that exactly falls into the rhythm of heartbeat since November 2021. I also feel a split in my right jaw every time I chew some food. Is there a cure for this?
I had an episode of vertigo. Visited my primary doctor. Visited the audiologist. Had an MRI. I reported tinnitus. At the end the doctor told me I just "had back luck" about the vertigo. After the MRI they found nothing wrong. Go figured.
It’s hard to believe one simple mistake has changed my life forever.
same with me man. A friend shot a pistol a foot away from my ear without warning me.
There appears to be some evidence to suggest contracting covid makes tinnitus worse. Mine definitely is as I now can hear it during the day as well as at night. The only other explanation is starting on Digoxin around the same time as getting covid?
Don't see an audiologist if you have severe symptoms, see an ear nose and throat specialist.
They won't do anything. There is nothing modern medicine can do. They will tell you that your ears look fine.
Im going to give up coffee lessen my salt intake, my lack of sleep i have no clue how to improve, ive tried so many things! Ive had tinnitus since 2018
