  • Clear coating a cycle frame with the LPH80 1.2, some get the feeling i don't like this gun which isn't the case at all, it a cracking little mini gun but there are others out there that offer more for less and are more universal for the person than only wants one gun.

    That frame come out really nice Pete! Paint thickness is an interesting topic I think, I have read from other people in the past that VW paint is quite soft and easy to chip, and I have to agree with your statement that what causes this is the thick layers of paint they put on at the factory you can see it the thickness in the chips. Thanks for bringing us another fascinating video Pete. All the best. Cheers.

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve, yeah, it certainly seems the way, cause the paint is obviously softer than the metal and to a lesser extent plastic underneath the thicker it is the easier it seems to gets damaged.
      With a car it's different as you will know, you do need a build up on the clear to allow you to polish out scratches etc, something you don't normally do on a push bike, thanks for watching mate, much appreciated 👍

    Great job Pete the finish on that frame is far better than you would get when it was new from the factory. That is a small gun and as you say it's quite limited for what it will do which is just down to it's size but when doing something like a bike frame or even a frame made from box section the gun then comes into it's own and IMO for that reason it's an invaluable gun 👍
    I haven't been doing much over the past few days Pete as I hurt my back and haven't been able to walk to well but I got out there this morning and flow coated a wing with the Octoral C401, have to say it wasn't my best work as every pass with the gun was quite painful, if I can get some video's of it later I might post it up, atm I'm sitting here dosed up on pain killers 🙄😂

      Cheers John, it was a lovely finish and has proved to be really durable, The Lph80 is a little work of art, it really is lovely and really small but i get lots of people asking me to recommend a mini gun and they normally don't have the money to buy lots of different one's which is why i don't recommend it as an only mini gun.
      Sorry to hear about the back, i know those days only too well, in fact when i originally shot that video i did so in a neck brace because I'd broken my neck falling off a bike head first!, hopefully you'll get over it soon, good and bad day's i guess 👍

      Yeah I know what you are saying Pete, if you want a good all round mini gun then this is not for you but it is a good gun to add to your collection as it has it's uses. You said in your video you have sold some of your Devilbiss guns 😱 so are the DV1's gone as well? 😬
      I remember seeing you in a neck brace, you were lucky it wasn't a worse outcome as breaking you neck could have left you in a wheel chair. I could have been the same though as when I was 18 I fell through a roof and broke my back in two places, I was reasonably lucky and got over it but was off work for a year, now I'm getting older I have these phases of back problems but it could have been a lot worse 😳😂🙄

      @@JohnWD40TC02 Hi John, no, the DV1s are going nowhere, i used to have a set of Sri Pro Lites so 5 with different tips/ caps but I've sold them all bar the 1.2 and 0.6, i also have a 1.4 tip as it has the same needle as the 1.2 , i had 4 Gti Pro Lites with different caps/tips but have sold 2 of them to make way for other gun's but i have 3 caps still, a T110, TE20 and TE10, i also had two GTI Pros that have gone.
      I also had a set of ANI R150s but have sold all those and just have a 1.2 and a R160 in 1.2, have sold around 12 all together but have replaced them with more 😂😂😂

      You have been having a clear out Pete, we all know you like your guns so at least you can sell them on to recoup some cash to put into more guns, I'm quite happy with the guns I have now and will be keeping what I've got, I'll only add to my collection via any winnings that come my way 😎
      ATM I'm more into my paint and clearcoats so once my scheme arrives I'll make a list of what I have and see what's available in the 250ml bottles then add to the scheme, only problem with getting all these paints and clearcoats is that unlike the guns you cant really sell them 😁😂
      So you said you have got some more, does that mean I can expect more gun reviews in the near future and is the DV1S on your purchase list 🤔🤔

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому

      Yes, the gun's are really easy to sell and most of them sell for what i pay for them as i very rarely buy new, from memory it's only the ANI guns, Sata 5500, Sagola Mini Xtreme, Sagola 3300 GTO, Kiwami4 and a few Kiwami1s that's been new, there will be a few others but i can't think of them.
      I've just got a Sagola Xtreme 4600 Scrambler 13 XL, a few more Kiwami1 gun's in different guises unused in the UK, a Sata 5000 RP, on my list to get is the DV1s, Walcom 360 Lite HTE Carbonio clear, that's about it until something new comes along, still looking for a deal on the DV1s which is why i haven't got one yet.
      It's handy for me you are into the paint and clears as it's good information for me and others, just finished a video on the DV1 Clear gun, a shootout between the C1 and C2 caps 😀

      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Keith, good to here your liking the videos, yes, I'm working in my garage, as you will probably know some guns create more overspray than others, normally the lower the operating pressure the less the overspray.
      I do have a reasonably good way of extraction, it just consists of two fan's, one 18" and one 24" which take the overspray away to the far end of the garage where there is a home made box with a 24" fan pulling the overspray out through 4" thickness filter media which i buy on a roll, it's works pretty well, the fan's are not ATEX rated but I've never had any problems with them, i do clean them quite often but that's about it really 👍

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому +1

      Hi buddy, the 0.8 is quite a small spray pattern, around 3" or 75mm if you think that will be ok then it should be fine, they are a good gun for smaller areas with good build quality and low air consumption, hope that helps 👍

  • @RussellSmyth
    @RussellSmyth 2 роки тому +1

    First thanks for your videos, lots of great info here! I am looking at the LPH80 for exclusively bicycle frame painting, and am curious if you think it would be a good choice - I know the gun is a bit more pricy, but its lower air requirements make the compressor side of the equation a bit lower. The other gun ive been considering is the ANI R160, but its air needs are higher. Would love your input!

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому

      Hi Russell, I think it's a very good choice, the R160 is a very good gun for general painting but compared to the LPH80 it is a little crude, it relies on pressure to deliver a good result which most of the time is fine but with cycle frames it inevitably means you waste a fair amount of materials and cause more overspray but it's less than half the price.
      My gun of choice for cycle frames is actually the Sri Pro Lite or Pro Lite S as it's now called in 0.6, it has a micro cap with a 1 bar pressure, it only has a 60mm fan which is ideal for bikes, another one to consider is the LPH50 with the E1 cap, really low consumption and good results, it has a side cup so can be rotated if needed, hope that helps 👍

    • @RussellSmyth
      @RussellSmyth 2 роки тому +1

      @@peteshobbies5383 Thank you so much for the reply! Great info and a little more to think about! The Pro Lite S looks fantastic.. ill look at that too, though it looks even more dear!l LPH50 also looks like a fine choice, and maybe a touch less pricy. The price difference between the R160 and the LPH80 is pretty easily offset in the extra cost for air capacity, so knowing the LPH80 will work well makes it a safe choice. Thanks again for the response!

      @@RussellSmyth Yes, you won't go wrong with the LPH80, my biggest criticism of that gun is it's small fan size compared to other mini gun's but that doesn't really matter when it comes to cycle frames, cheers mate , give me a shout if you get stuck 👍

      Hi Buddy, my spray area is simply my workshop, I have a few none Atex rated fans that move the air to the outlet which has a 24" fan in a home made box, this takes it out of the workshop through a 4" thick filter media.
      I use automotive paint, so a solvent basecoat with a 2k clear over the top with any decals being laid directly on the basecoat and clear over the top of those, you can then sand and flow coat if required

    Hi Pete. Great video. I have a question or two. I am doing up a Norton Commando. I have a Sata 4400 1.3 and SRI pro mini 1.2. The pain I use is House of Kolor as I use this product on most of my projects over the years. The colours are fantastic. Live in the UK I have the same problems as you with heating. My prep is good base coats and primer perfect.
    I like to lay me clear down like glass can be done as the HOK is a great High Build solids. But to get it to run it need a couple of good coats of clear and as you say I don't want to build to be too thick.I don't want any orange peel as its so hard to sand and polish motor cycle frames to get that mirror finish.
    You say you heat your clear. This sounds like a great way to get the clear to run do you mix your clear then heat it up or do you heat up the clear and your hardener separate before mixing.
    If I remember you say to use waxing pots to heat up . Do you have a link where you got yours.
    Also you have a blue digital surface temp gauge. any info on that as well.
    Getting that clear on like a mirror is a real balance act, especially here in the UK, for the home hobby painter.
    Sorry for the long question. any info would be great.
    Cheers. Marco

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Marco, as you say, getting the clear on a bike frame is a balancing act which i was trying to explain on the video, it's very easy to over do it and end up with a mess which on a frame is much harder to fix the a car panel.
      I always used to boil a kettle of water and put my mixed clear in it's mixing cup into the water, just in a small bucket but these day's i stick it in the microwave, mixed for around 8 seconds per 100ml, it depends on the ambient temperature and the power of the microwave so be really careful if you do so to not over do it, you want the clear somewhere between 25c and 30c, this makes it nice and runny so flows nice, just mix enough for one coat and repeat for the second as the heat obviously speeds the curing process, here's a link to a video which shows the difference it makes, also put some heat with a heat gun into the frame before you clear it.
      ua-cam.com/video/VRCGv6Rxw1Q/v-deo.html
      The temperature gun is great to see what temperature you have on surfaces ect, i got it from Aliexpress a few years ago and it's been brilliant, cost about £12 at the time, I'll try and find a link and put it up, hope that helps a little, cheers 👍
