Hi Brian, well today I painted and cleared my tailgate. I used this method to adjust my gun,I have to thank you so very much!! I have never laid down clear so flat. I mean I usually have some peal and some nibs to wet sand but, now no peal just a few nibs!! I kept looking at the gate waiting to see a run and you are right it was right on the edge, no runs, no peal, just a few nibs. I have been watching for a couple years know and you have helped me a great deal so again thank you very much!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Never seen that adjustment tip, thanks! So much better when you're videos are straight to the point and not trying to sell some product that the company doesn't even have prices, a distributors list and won't sell to the public.

I know guys who roll their eyes when I start talking about even touching the fan. This industry is losing people and sorry but you do have some old timers unwilling to share their knowledge. Thank you Brian .

Hi. Thanks for the message! I’m glad these tricks help because I once learned them all and made a big difference in my life. Whenever I learned a new trick I was so eager to try it out the next day.
This is a great adjustment trick for all coatings from primers to base coats. If you have Orange Peel in your Primers or Base Coats you will have it in your Clear Coats also. No matter what adjustments you use on your Clear Coat. Orange Peel is a product of several things. 1. Coating Viscosity is too thick for Fluid Needle Set being used 2. Application of too much material to substrate in an application pass 3. Air Pressure set too high 4. Air Pressure set too low 5. Fan Width set too wide or too narrow 6. Using a Fast Hardener in high temperatures 7. Using a Fluid Needle and AirCap that are dirty 8. Using a low quality gun that doesn’t atomize properly 9. Insufficient Shop Air CFM’s to maintain Optimum PSI
Don't forget about spray cans!! I just did a bumper with those and have to wet sand the hello out of that orange peel.....it polish really good but I didn't match the oem peel, it's almost a mirror (dark blue)😅😅😅 When I retire, I'll buy some guns and gear to enjoy more this craft!!❤
Brian, Thank You!! I just sprayed my door jams and edges and the underneath of the hood and trunk lid yesterday. It’s the first time I’ve ever sprayed color and clear. I am astonished at how flat and smooth the clear came out. Truly amazing. I can’t wait to put it back together and spray the whole car. You are a fantastic teacher - thanks so much for all your videos
My son, 14 was given a 1995 Dodge Dakota with only 70000 miles, so I have 2 years to get the body work done. I ordered new front fenders, rocker panels and cab corners. These paint videos are a great help for me to give it a good looking paint job. Thankyou and happy painting.

The move is really bitter sweet. I love the new shop, but their are so many fond memories at the old shop. So glad you found shelter from the heat. I'm excited to see you in your new digs!
Been painting since the 90s, been around paint reps, gun reps, instructors, blah blah. It's always this gun wants wide open fan, this fluid setting, that pressure. Never seen that trick.
@nt3523 agree 100%. When I started years ago i started with cheap gun and my end result wasn't perfect, i upgraded to medium quality guns my finish was bettet. I then upgraded to one of the best brands for all 4 of my guns and my finish is great everytime
@PaintSociety what's even cooler is that I use the iwata l400 for clear, just pulled a Benz in the booth and gonna tweak my settings and see how it does.
@PaintSociety dude, it turned out awesome! Driver side of a 22 Benz, incredibly clean and the clear layed down like glass! Also used your tip for 10% reduction on my second coat of clear, thanks for the tips
Excellent Tip! I've come back to refresh this tip periodically and always learn something new. You deserve all of the success that has been coming your way.
This is so useful! I spray electric guitars, just starting using a LVLP gun, I was so confused by the combination of settings. This is brilliantly explained.
Excellent tip, I've been using a LVLP gun on custom guitar paint jobs, specifically clear coats and struggling with how to balance the fan pattern verses the air pressure on small jobs. This really helps! Thank you 😊
Another great learn-by example! Looking back on what I've painted so far (not a ton) I recall just fiddling with the fan and pressure settings to get where I wanted it, but now knowing a defined process for getting to that end point, you save a guy time, and cut out the 'well, maybe this works better' -- You've done it, and pass on the knowledge to us. Thank you!
Best gun-adjusting advice ever! I had issues with orange peel and tried different types of adjustments gleaned from other YT videos but they never quite worked. This is great advice! 🎉
Excellent Video!! I am a veteran painter starting in the 1970's and will start using your air fan/pressure technic! One thing I do different on actual painting panels, etc., is I paint the "jam areas" first in case a dust particle contaminates the main area...I can stop and fix it; then spray the "show-me" areas on a clean uninterrupted run!
Thank you! I am running out to the shop with a scrap fender to try this now!!! I have always struggled with orange peel. Sometimes I get a beautiful panel, and other times I have a deep orange peel that has to be sanded. I have been chasing air pressures, but now, I am hoping, I can stop chasing air pressures and just dial it in!
This is excellent. Thank you for this! I still remember after doing a couple of finishes as perfect and flat as possible, I had to help a friend respray a fender on his wife's Buick. Got everything prepped, sprayed it all carefully. Looked awesome, went and put it on the car... hmm. The fender looked amazing, but it was clearly MUCH nicer than the rest of the car was. That's when it was clear to me, parking even my old Mazda next to the owner of the company's brand new Lexus, it was clear who had a better paint finish.
Uncle Tony : there is a lot of snake oils out there today the old 3-in1 oil, Marvel oil mystery oil, and WD-40 been using all three oils for the past 74 years because it’s what I used with my Dad! Actually WD-40 I think came out in the early 60s and it was new to both my Dad and I it’s amazing how many oils there are and the differences on what they can be used! Thanks for taking the time to ferret these things out! One of the things that the marvel Mystery oil was good for especially as a body man and fabricator in my line of work was keeping all of my Air tools oiled before using them! Just a couple of drops before every use has made most of all of them last through a lifetime of use! And I still use them to this day over 70 years later! 👍
I also run my fluid needle in to prevent an excessively wet fan. Nice to see someone on UA-cam doing things properly and mentioning the importance of TDS.
I restore classics for a hobby and have only painted 6 cars-trucks. This tip gave me my best finish ever. Almost no orange peel, amazing. Love it. Thank you.
Your setting is real. Not like other painter. By doing what you say it give me a best result. No one at all is telling about this settings. Thank you very much sir. Respact you.

The painter that taught me how to paint with the ultra 9k system always would have me just put the gun really close to the panel and move fast to avoid runs , will say every job came out looking slick!
Nice job it came out looking amazing! With the way cars are being painted from the factory we will definitely be needing to increase the orange peel from our finish because every year factory paint jobs are looking worse and worse 😆

This tip means a lot to me! I tend to chase the dry spots on my clear coats which sometimes leaves me with long sags after I finally get the coverage I want. This trick should save material and labor, much appreciated!
You just help me big on figuring out why I just haven't been happy with my clear job on the last job I did when I know I did everything right and could not figure out how to get rid of orange peels now I know my fluid wasn't set to wide open and my fan was to wide and my psi was to high. Was proud that there where no runs but still wasn't happy and I even used the finish 1 and I was completely lost and borderline discouraged until I see. This video. Thanks brother your awesome
Finally, I knew their had to be a trick they never show us. Can't wait to test this trick out when the weather gets better over here in the Chicago area.
Hello from the UK 😊 Been watching your vids for a while now. My son is selling his A3 S line. The wheel archs were rusty. I did it! Looked like a brand new panel with paint, I did it on the street, it was a bit windy but I was shocked as was my boy how good it looked... The color match was slightly out, a bit darker but my son never noticed it. I want a gun and compressor now 😊😊 Thanks Paint Society
Hey Brian i just tried this trick and i used it on the base coat and clear and the finish come out so flat its the best i have ever pulled off!! thanks agin your am amazing teacher !!
Thank you for the time you take to explain this! These are the small, but bigger at the end, things that make a huge difference when we talk about painting.
I have learned a lot from watching your videos. I wish I had known this trick when I painted the roof on my truck 2 days ago. I will definitely be trying this technique next time I paint.
long time viewer here been following your process here Slow is the new fast ! i have had a issue here which has brought my confidence down i always dry peel so today it was a lovely 55F dry morning in the shade , i had a nice prepped bonnet everything was followed by the book , was respraying my bonnet due to 5 to 6 rock chips just like your viewer video with the Porsche anyway ended up doing the blend with the base gave about 8 to 10 min to flash and go matte i mixed my clear up before hand and heated it up to a lovely toasty 80F so it could flow out well with out having to use to much reducer ended up going with 5% so paint was on the thicker side did my first coat of clear just like your glossy hood video i got it on pretty heavy but could see a tiny bit of dry area it was like glass , waited as per tech sheet plus a extra 5 min as it was cool with my medium speed activator got my 2nd coat of clear on , watched the paint dry for 45min she all looked great 6 hours later and it has got solvent pop over it , most stuff was done by the book and activator was slow for the cool morning , it was left to dry in the shade in 65F weather as it heated up a touch since morning :(
Hey Brian, have you thought about doing a video on the different drying speeds of your reducers and hardeners and the effects they have on your final finish, this is a great video as I've seen plenty of painters using far to wide of a fan and end up with a dry uneven finish, it is worth mentioning that a narrower fan does require paying closer attention to your technique as you mentioned the possibility of runs increases greatly.
Very cool, I always did this without realizing I could see it in the pressure gauge. Just looked at the pattern when it began to narrow stop. Is it still true that reducer speed also helps reduce orange peel, maybe even more so? Thanks.
Just sprayed my wing today, although the base coat turned out great, the orange peel on the clear is horrendous, I will try this tip! I also didn’t realise how many passes you had to do so will try this as well! Cheers for the video!
Man. I sure wish I'd seen something like this for gun adjustments when everything went from Binks # 7's, to base coats. It was a hobby for me doing body work and making vets vehicles look good. No bondo here just a lot of lead. Thank you, I still play.
Been watching your channel for awhile now, I have been painting cars on and off over the years as a hobby. Always learning from you keep up the good work 👌 greeting from Scotland 🏴
Good tip, it can work, but not to over adjust the fan too much you have a very centre heavy fan, my tip would be to choose your final spray pressure, say 2 bar. set gun at 1.8 1.9 bar, close in the fan until you reach 2 bar, then you know your on the outside limit
GREAT VID! I've painted a ton of stuff in my day. I've painted with 55 gallons of paint on boat super structures and never seen this method. I have a 69 Mach 1 I'm doing...I'll be doing this on the last coats for sure. I don't have a booth so it's hard to keep it dirt free but I'll sand the color coat before the clear so I can sand the clear if I have to. Thank big time for this tip!
Thanks for these guides, they're really a lifesaver. Quick question. In between layers, while you're waiting, do you do anything to prevent the gun from gumming up? Or do you just keep the paint loaded until it's time to use it again?
Your paint's technical data sheet should have a pot life time on it. That will tell you about how long you can leave the paint it the gun. Like S Konape said, 10-15 minutes between coats isn't enough time to cause a problem. Most paint's I've used have at least a 2 hour pot life.
And of course, thank you so much for making this video. You have given me the confidence to tackle my 66 mustang that I had since 2001, it's my first car
I do the exact same needle adjustment but reverse the fan adjustment. Leaving the fan wide open and dialing down the air pressure will allow the fan to fill in regardless of the material viscosity. People often confuse the needle adjustment with "fluid flow". You have more range with the trigger maxed and you can always pull the trigger less to reach tight spots or put less material on.
In the UK, body shop bosses would freak at the 5 minutes wait. All the paint manufacturers have brought out 1.5 coat systems that are done straight away ie half coat closed finish followed by full coat. See spies hecker videos. In UK everything has to be done yesterday with the word efficiency plugged in everywhere. To be fair the finish is OEM with these systems like spies hecker, PPG etc. Painting since cellulose to today's water base and including knacker lacquer oil paints on trucks back in the day, about fifty years in all. It is what it is 😁. Keep going guys.
I've been painting for 38 years and never heard of this technique. It makes so much sense! I can't wait to try it out!

Thank you sir for the tip. I started in auto body in 1974 and still at it. Never knew this trick and will try it out next paint session.
long time viewer here
been following your process here
Slow is the new fast !
i have had a issue here which has brought my confidence down i always dry peel
so today it was a lovely 55F dry morning in the shade , i had a nice prepped bonnet everything was followed by the book , was respraying my bonnet due to 5 to 6 rock chips just like your viewer video with the Porsche
anyway ended up doing the blend with the base gave about 8 to 10 min to flash and go matte
i mixed my clear up before hand and heated it up to a lovely toasty 80F so it could flow out well with out having to use to much reducer ended up going with 5% so paint was on the thicker side
did my first coat of clear just like your glossy hood video i got it on pretty heavy but could see a tiny bit of dry area it was like glass , waited as per tech sheet plus a extra 5 min as it was cool with my medium speed activator got my 2nd coat of clear on , watched the paint dry for 45min she all looked great
6 hours later and it has got solvent pop over it ,
most stuff was done by the book and activator was slow for the cool morning , it was left to dry in the shade in 65F weather as it heated up a touch since morning :(
Alway an incredible “class” Brian, thanks for reminding us about this little known gem.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you I've learned alot from you paint our gto and I'm getting real close to painting the whole car can't wait thanks again
Thank you. I never knew how to adjust a gun like that. I can't wait to experiment with it. Learning is always awesome.
I agree with @robh3267. I would love to know the relationship between speed of hardeners and reducers with temperature and risk of runs.
Setting the fan trick was excellent.
That was the best lesson I have seen can’t wait to try that out. Thank you
Thanks. Best paint tips on the Tube.
Very cool, I always did this without realizing I could see it in the pressure gauge. Just looked at the pattern when it began to narrow stop.
Is it still true that reducer speed also helps reduce orange peel, maybe even more so?
Thanks.
Great tip to adjust the pressures of spray guns!
Great video, I've been painting twenty plus years and never knew that fan adjustment trick !
Great to hear!
Good tip, it can work, but not to over adjust the fan too much you have a very centre heavy fan, my tip would be to choose your final spray pressure, say 2 bar. set gun at 1.8 1.9 bar, close in the fan until you reach 2 bar, then you know your on the outside limit
I'll be trying this trick out in a few weeks. Almost ready to paint and clear coat my vw. Loving the knowledge on the vids. Keep in coming 👍
I really enjoy learning from your videos.
Thanks for these guides, they're really a lifesaver.
Quick question. In between layers, while you're waiting, do you do anything to prevent the gun from gumming up? Or do you just keep the paint loaded until it's time to use it again?
In between coats isn't enough time for paint to gum up. Leave it in till finished, then clean gun. Happy painting
Your paint's technical data sheet should have a pot life time on it. That will tell you about how long you can leave the paint it the gun. Like S Konape said, 10-15 minutes between coats isn't enough time to cause a problem. Most paint's I've used have at least a 2 hour pot life.
@@johnnymccollum8698 Does this also apply to Clearcoat or just primer and basecoat?
@@eleseivesilciuc3887 it applies to clear coat.
@@johnnymccollum8698 thank you, I appreciate the response
This video has been very helpful to me. Thank you!!
And of course, thank you so much for making this video. You have given me the confidence to tackle my 66 mustang that I had since 2001, it's my first car
Excellent Brian in every way, great tips, thanks a million
My pleasure!
Thank you so much for this trick...been spraying for years stopped for a few years trying to get back into it...n you help out alot
Gotta love Bryan and this channel... I just learned something 😊
Now that’s a good tip👊🏻
Always enjoy your videos. Very informative.
Really glad im a subscriber, learnt more here than just about anywhere else, This really comes in handy, cant wait to try it
Thanks Brian--always awesome information!!
I stopped putting orange peels in my paint and problem was solved.
