This is a 41 year old song that still shows what real rock with incredible musicians can create. Thank you Asia and BJ for appreciating music that can't be duplicated. I can honestly say that it's reaction videos (good ones) that are doing a lot to share and introduce music to an audience that might otherwise not know it exists. When I was younger it was listening stations in music stores, but now, thanks to people like you, classic music is introduced, and appreciated, in modern times.
Our pleasure!
This was definitely overdubbed with the studio version. Not complaining. Killer song. One of my favorites. The intro to this song grabbed my attention immediately as a kid when it was released. Great album.
Just lip-synced.
Putting them in that setting was ridiculous!
@@williamjordan5554
Right? And ya just don't fade out of a live performance.
Ahhh, the early years of MTV when everyone and their brother's band were making fake live performance videos.
Yeah... it's just a lip sync. You can tell right from the first note. EVH didn't use that same tone live. It was meatier than the studio recording. And Roth always added extra stuff in the vocals. Still an great song. I heard them on 3 straight tours from Women and Children first through Diver Down. Fair Warning was killer.
Diamond Dave, David Lee Roth was into the martial arts and it showed in his abilities on stage to bring in those acrobatics a showman. Mean Streets is one of their best, highly ranked by many music critics for Eddie's intro, this riff and the subject matter.
DLR credits Jim Dandy Mangrum front man for Black Oak Arkansas for his stage persona
Yeah, its a shame he got nailed by the Marlboro man.
Roth was a arrogant ego maniac. Couldn't get over it was Eddie and Alex 's band. Thought he was better than the rest of the band. That's why Van Halen went on playing sold out shows and Roth's was playing smaller and smaller venues.
@@jebaker6942
Quintessential “front man syndrome”….I watched a doc about him on REELZ….very revealing and interesting!
Hey. Just leave it at that they wanted different things. No doubt that Eddie was the brightest light, but Dave added GREATLY to the band. That is why the biggest and longest fans love DLR with VH. They were at there best together.
BTW.. I love Sammy Hagar, but was a bigger fan of his earlier stuff before VH.
We were at a Judas Priest concert at the Oakland Coliseum Arena waiting for the opening act (Dokken), and the sound engineer played "Mean Street" and "Unchained" and we might as well have been at a Van Halen show. The crowd went nuts.
At least you got to see a good show. .Check out Dokken's It's Not Love from Philly in 87,,opening for Aerosmith..Great sound quality ..
Was that 91,with Megadeath,
Man getting to see dokken and Judas priest in the same night. People in the 80s had it good.
@@cheenu711 That tour also had Megadeath on that gig,I saw it in Toronto,I got a call at 6 that night,so of we went.Im 62 so I can say yeah I saw a lot bands. For me the Heaven and Hell tour was a killer show, funny back then I had floors, never realized how short Ronnie was,but what a show, belting out N.I.B,was a bloody pleasure.
Megadeath was on that tour,at least in Toronto, that was a triple banger
David Lee Roth started studying martial arts at the age of 12. Roth has earned belts in Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, and Karate, and has practiced sword-fighting for decades. Not a bad front man for a rock band!! Great reaction!
Eddie is definitely famous for his tapping, but his rhythm guitar playing is what it’s all about, along with Michael Anthony on bass, and of course, Alex Van Halen on the skins!! Everything came together just right to form The Mighty Van Halen!! Love you both!!❤️💋🥰
Well said Martha!!!
🔥🔥
Eddie is arguably the greatest rhythm player of all time. That's one of the things that set him apart from his contemporaries.
@@jimmyboy131 Ya beat me to it,lol. And you're exactly right.
Nailed it.
Eddie was so talented. He could make that guitar scream. And Roth was into martial arts that's why he was so flexible. RIP Eddie
Actually guys this IS the studio version but thanks for this I never saw this video before. Yes - The wide kicks you refer to was from “Jump” Mean Streets rocks!
I saw them play at Madison Square Garden with Black Sabbath around 1974. OMG...what a show that was!!!! Loud & brash...it was great!!
We were so spoiled back in the day. We expected a high level of performance from our Rock Bands and they delivered it to us all through the 70's and the 80's. It was just a high bar that everyone was expected to perform at. Sometimes goofy and a little cheesy but it was authentic and hella entertaining. When you paid your 10 dollars or maybe 25 dollars to see a high level rock concert OR an all day Rock Festival, you expected to see the best show and we saw many of them. I was a lucky young lady back in those days. ROCK ON!
Thank you for all your Great Posts. I learn a lot through you both. God Bless you and keep you next to His side always!
Asia & Bj Thank you for keeping Van Halen alive, you two are the best! #1
Our pleasure!
Van Halen in their prime! The absolute prototype for all 80's hair metal bands! Very funky song!
He has such a unique voice and the entire band has a unique creative sound.
I love the original Van Halen with David on the vocals. Thanks for this reaction.
Back in the day Van Halen was on top of the world. Fair Warning is my all time favorite VH Album... " Sunday Afternoon In The Park/One Foot Out The Door" is a Must!
I grew up in the same town as Eddie & Alex, went to their backyard parties in Pasadena Ca, when they were called Mammoth! hung out with them on the sunset strip in Hollywood, Ca at all the local clubs they played, then in a blink of an eye they were gone! signed! seen them countless times in concert. I was a very lucky guy to grow up Van Halen! RIP Eddie! We miss you....
Eddie's son, Wolfie named his own band, MammothWVH in tribute to his dad
@@MrTech226 Thats respect!
That's awesome! My fellow alumni from my H.S. is Vince Gill, Elizabeth Warren and Color me Bad
This song was taken from in my opinion the greatest Van Halen album ever made. And that is fair warning. It is the first record of theirs with no covers and it is also the shortest record they ever made. And this is one of the greatest songs of the 1980s. Great selection and as always you guys are simply the Best
Is Sammy Hagar can't touch diamond Dave
The album before FW, Women And Children First, didn't have any covers on it.
@@kevinwilkins3248 point taken. That was a great record too..
Van Halen was a band that nooooooobody wanted to follow on stage!!! Pure POWER!!!
This is the studio version playing over their performance
Any party you went to in the 80's, Van Halen was always playing, LOUD!!
From '77 til DLR departure '85 they were IT ! Everybody would focus on Ed's solo's when it is his rhythm play that was the jewel. I have been listening to his ISOLATED guitar tracks since his passing and recommend everyone listen to a few of them. The sound and tone on some of the tracks are beautiful (actually all of them are)
Agreed. His solo in this song is great, but the rhythm part he is playing under the solo is also incredible, as are the rhythm parts in the verses and choruses. Basically, this song is the perfect example of how good EVH was.
RIP Eddie 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Diver Down Tour. Was f😂cking incredible! Show lasted so long I had like 4 dates through the whole concert. The Arena wreaked of weed! Ahhhh late 70’s 80’s. The good old days. Not a care in the world! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
RIP , Eddie Van Halen you are missed 😢🙏💔
I seen them in Aug 4 1981, at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto....ticket price 9.50cad:). I think last tour with Diamond Dave. I have stub still, we had greys not the best seats, very top row against the wall but all could be seen sometimes you sneak 1 or 2 when your that high up there haha ... amazing concert for back then too! This is one of my favorite songs from them.❤ for your reaction!
Rock on!
Crushing riff by Eddie! His lead playing is legendary but I feel his rhythm playing is just as good, if not better!
Great job and great pic. Never again will there be another band like Van Halen! Greatest guitarist ever, Greatest front-man ever, Best background vocalist - Michael Anthony(on bass), and killer drummer. Never again, but at least we were alive during this time to enjoy it! Pure incredible MAGIC!
Ya know, if the lead singer had just a little charisma, and if the guitar player had just a little bit of talent, I think this band could go places.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, I have high hopes for this band. With a little bit of practice they're going places for sure, keep up the good work guys.
Some of Van Halen is timeless...actually most of Van Halen is timeless. I was paying attention when these songs were first released. It is always fascinating to discover people just now discovering this art. Van Halen is music that is raw, innovative and virtuosic. It moves you. It demands that you listen. So many of today's artists are afraid to be different. Van Halen always approached their art from the standpoint of "everyone get the fu*k out of our way. "
This is definitely one of my favorite songs by them. It's very groovy, but also very heavy.
When I was 20, I drove halfway across Canada and back. Just bought the Fairwarning album before I left home adding to my VH album collection. I think I wore the cassette out before I arrived in Toronto. Just a killer album like all of Eddie's music. Cool vid, y'all rock
One of the best of the songs from the classic lineup of Van Halen. I only saw the original lineup once but David Lee Roth was so drunk that he couldn't perform and it was a two hour wait for their set after the Scorpions played and a long hot day at a festival so most everyone in that 300,000+ crowd was heading for the gates in disappointment. Hard believe that it has been almost 40 years ago now. I still got the concert T-shirt from the Us83 Festival tho 😆
DLR ruined the show I saw by being drunk, too. This is one of the few VH songs of his I can listen to. Such a horrible singer when you get down to it. His auto tuned screams are like fingernails on chalkboard to me.
@@noheamike5036 Uhh, they didn't use auto tune back then on those original VH records. SMFH. 🙄
for me...this is one of the best albums of all time...I personally dont think theres one bad song on this album...Its definitely the one album I have to listen to the whole thing once I start it...
I remember what a VJ (Video Jockey) said on MTV back in the day: Any song that starts with a certain sound I can always tell it’s a Eddie Van Halen guitar 🎸
Y’all get it. The guitar is exactly that. Mean Street. Kudos to your reac
Definitely one of my favorite VH tunes!!!
Dancing to this in clubs was fun.
Eddie Van Halen's Brother Alex is the drummer. A sensational drummer. The talent genes in that family run deep. Eddie's son Wolfgang is a great performer as well.
We saw Wolf Van Halen's band Mammoth open for Guns 'N' Roses last Fall. They killed it!
Durka Durka. Ya think??
I've seen them live twice. Outdoors in 77, and indoors in 79. This song indoors, at the 79 concert, brought the house down. Phenomenal.
Van Halen didn't play "Mean Street" in concert in 1979. It wasn't recorded until 1981.
@@jeffbrewer8887 You're correct. It was the indoor concert in the early 80's at Kemper Arena here in Kansas City.
@@royalway12 They may have played the demo song "Voodoo Queen" in concert before they were signed by Warner Brothers. Most of the musical parts ended up in "Mean Street." The end of "Voodoo Queen" ended up being used to finish "Hot for Teacher."
@@jeffbrewer8887 You know your Van Halen. Have a good one.
@@royalway12 yeah, I'm a bit of a fan. I started playing guitar about a month after seeing them for the first time (November 2, 1986, Cow Palace), seen them about seven more times after that (88 twice, 91, 92 at the RHRN show in Fresno, 98, 04, and 07). I'm fairly familiar with the band.
You have a good one also. Sorry about the nitpicking😉
Love Van Halen and have ever since the debuted.
My first Van Halen concert 1981 Oakland Collesium - unforgettable,
Diamond Dave, the best frontman in hard rock history.
One word....LEGENDS!!!!
saw them in concert 3 times absolutely LOVE vintage Van Halen!!! Great reaction.
Van Halen without DLR…That, is legend
Van Halen was the first concert I ever saw (1981), I was 15, it was their premier (first album) probably their best. All I thought was how awesome they were. Try listening to DOA or The cradle will rock, both awesome songs in my opinion.
i remember seeing you there what a night.
So cool to see you two genuinely enjoy the groove of my favorite band, Van Halen, and one of their best songs
DLR is a martial artist, he has been training in kenjutsu since he was twelve years old, and also practices kenpō and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He has a blue belt but i can remember in which discipline. He also has an emergency medical technician license in NY.
David Lee Roth didn't do kicks because it was popular, he did kicks because he was a martial artist, and throwing in kicks while dancing around the stage became one of his trademarks as Van Halen's frontman.
Just as awesome during the 26 Van Halen concerts I attended
What a riff!!! The mighty van halen...proud dutchman
i love this SONG EDDIE ANS ALEX VAN HALEN SERIOUSLY ROCKED . . . . LOVE WATCHING YOU TWO !!!!!!!!
EVH had the meanest and most sizzling guitar sound ever. That guitar tone is just mean!
You should really watch Van Halen perform "so this is love" live at the Oakland Coliseum from 1981.....is truly live and during their greatest period...you won't be disappointed.😎🤘
David Lee Roth was into martial arts and still is. That's why it's so flexible and he does a lot of martial arts gymnastics in his performances.
"Everybody Want Some" is a must!!
It was really something when Roth made his entrance by flying over the amps, doing a mid air splits and landing on his feet.
Roth needs medication and the SuperDome for his empty ego.
David Lee Roth was always fit and in shape, he trained in martial arts for a lot of years. He's good with a samurai sword also.
Can you tell a real martial artist and swordsman from a guy who fakes it on stage drunk or coked up?
@@pulsarlights2825 time for your nap Jackie Chan
@@bitchnguy Did those assless chaps Dave wore on the Diver Down tour distract you a little?
lol, i’ve never seen a video for this song ever. thanks for finding one.
thank u for listening with an open mind
One of the greatest rock songs ever.
Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez was David Lee Roths martial arts coach and taught him the kicks.
This song takes me back to cliff diving off Lake Mead during summer break, ya’all!! 🔥
TV producer: What size drum kit do you need?
Alex: Yes.
EVH IS THE MAN .... HES THE KING OF 6 STRINGS. GOD REST HIS SOUL! 🙏
Man love the responses , can you guys put the videos behind you, full screen background? Awesome responses !
Loved this song since I first heard it back in the day.
Eddy Van Halen edited AND did all the guitar work on Michael Jackson's "Beat it" hit.
Eddy added 21 different solos into the song and Michael and his manager Clive Davis LIVED it so much they published it without changing a thing.
Bad ass for it's time! Keep on rockin!
Mean streets killer 👍 🤘
Like 1981 all over again! Memories!
Eddie Van Halen had a vibe and a persona that generated a mystique about him before the era of digital media, online chat rooms and official websites. The only way to learn something new about the band, Ed's technique or how he designed his guitars was through magazines and rare on camera interviews. Europeans had more tv exposure to VH than Americans did back in the day. There wasn't the danger of over exposure. It left a little of the mystique intact.
There was never a single individual who more redefined what it meant to be a rock guitar legend than Eddie. He did more to expand the vocabulary of the instrument, introduce new techniques, sound and guitar tone than any guitarist who ever lived. VH redefined big arena rock for decades to come. They were the gold standard that everybody is still chasing to this day.
Ed had it all. His hair, his unique guitar graphics, his playing style, his stage presence and swagger--it was a combination of things wrapped into one individual. He had a "thing" most people just don't have. His peers envied and admired him. His fans were energized and inspired by him, and he had a profound impact on the art of rock guitar playing. You can't explain the phenomenon, you can only appreciate him for what he was in his time.
The 1984 album concert was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Always been a big Van Halen fan. Ears rang for a week 🤩
Gotta watch this - Van Halen's Meanstreet meets the Jackson 5 - "Van Halen and The Jackson 5 - "Mean Machine"
David Lee Roth is a ninth degree grand master black belt and an exceptional Japanese swordsman, he's incorporated those moves into his shows for years and it's made all the girls want to be with him and all the guys want to be him!!!!!!!
Asia, Dave is a multi level black belt.
I saw them live in 85 & 98, they played this in 98 richmond va front row facing EVH. Epic!
LOVE how you guys have discovered, enjoy and appreciate the artistry of Van Halen. Try out 5150 from Live Without a Net. Right Now from Toronto 1995 if you wanna see the passion these guys put into their music. Keep doin what you're doin. You've got me to work and back during this pandemic while working in healthcare. Thank you R.IP. Eddie. Thanks , Gary in Wisco
Honestly one of my all time favorites by them from their early days! I know I say this a lot but so much nostalgia for me. I was a kid when this came out so just reminds me of Summer ☀️ days at my neighbors pool with friends and all our parents jamming this.
When he came back with the band ,On stage he pulled a move like he does and hit nose with the microphone,He tried to hang in there But they halted the show to get hit some med treatment,Then went on with the show ! and it was one of his return back with the band tours ! And this was not so long ago !
It's actually a snap kick. Dave did those all the time. One of his other moves was to jump off of the front of the drum platform with both legs spread eagle. There's a photo of him doing this in his candy striped bell bottom pants on the back cover of their 2nd album. He was so focused on looking at the camera he landed on a mic stand and fractured his right foot.
Listen to And The Cradle Will Rock, Girl Gone Bad, Unchained, and Everybody Wants Some, Van Halen is my all time favorite group!
This is probably my favorite Van Halen song. It's definitely Rock but it's got a pocket and it just has a drive to it.
If y'all like this one then I suggest you check out extreme doing a song called get the funk out. It's hard Rock with a little funk and a great pocket. Great song from a great band.
there will never be another Eddie Van Halen...so blessed I got to see them in 1979 when I was 14.
THE GOAT! Best band of all time, but EVH is the greatest creative force the universe will ever produce... #LONGLIVETHEKING!
David Lee Roth has been a life long martial artist, that's is why his on stage kicks look so good.
Man,....I thought I was so cool jamming this on my boom box back in the day🤣😆!!! Love Van Halen!!! This is one of my faves!!!
Dude, if you were jamming this, you were cool!👍🏼
David would jump off 12ft giant speakers and would do a split in concert. 10th row center stage in 1984 awesome. 👍
Killer song indeed, no matter the video. The original Van Halen had the same sort of sonic impact as the Jimi Hendrix Experience or Led Zeppelin as something new and a sense of wonder, you never new what was coming next from Eddie. Great choice, more VH Please! Do Atomic Punk, it's a banger! Enjoy. 🎸
My best song on the Unchained album. We rocked this in the 80's.
Eddie got the tapping from Steve Hackett. Eddie wanted to name his band Genesis, before finding out there already was one. Discovered Hackett’s tapping vicariously.
Hang em High Van Halen is one of the best. It is a great Eddie Riff there. Eddie really nails that one.
In the 2000s Dave moved to Japan and studied swordsmanship, after he was an EMT in NYC.
Easily one of my top 5 VH songs ever!
Probably my favorite VH song....solo is siiiiick
So glad I got to see em a few times with Dave..R I P Eddie, miss ya man
This is from their forth studio album, "Fair Warning." A great album. Van Halen, "Little Guitars."✌️
....sing to meeeeeeee
This is actually the studio version with concert video footage.
I’m a 56 yo African American male who is former semi professional drummer and who has also been a HUGE Van Halen fan since 1979. I love, Love, LOVE watching the two of you reacting to their music because you seem to “GET IT”… especially Roxy! She always seems to get the “Holy Spirit” whenever she hears one of Eddie’s phenomenal guitar solo’s. When I watch the two of you Thoroughly enjoying the music of Van Halen for the first time it’s like reliving my childhood!
Unfortunately this is NOT them playing live it was for a tv show in another country where they used the Pre-recorded track from their album Fair Warning. But I STRONGLY suggest that you watch the video of them live in Oakland, CA. 1981 where they perform 3 songs back to back. Trust me…you WONT be disappointed!!!
Thanks again for your AWESOME channel!
The song that David Lee Roth jumps off the upper stage is " So This Love "
that was definitely JUMP! ❤
David Lee Roth has been deep into the Martial Arts most of his life
