I have been practicing Optometry for 39 years. 2 1/2 years ago, after being diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic with an HbA1c of 9.9, I drastically changed my diet, using Intermittent Fasting and Keto and brought my HbA1c down to 4.9 WITHOUT MEDICATION. I also came off ALL medications, 2 for hypertension and a statin. I was able to give up my CPAP for sleep apnea. This is a great video, Dr Berry!

I had really good news at the eye doctor recently. He said when they tested me for glaucoma in 2017, I had the early stages of it. He said it was markedly better in 2018, and remains that way. He said that does not happen. When you have it, it worsens. I started eating Keto in June 2017. I asked him if that could’ve made a difference. He said well, maybe. But he didn’t know. I came home and looked it up. And yes it can help! I’m going to send him the article about it. 😊

I am not sure why, but one year after going ketogenic in my diet, my prescription glasses no longer worked. When I went to my eye doctor for an exam she proclaimed, Mark, your vision has improved to better than 20/20! She then asked, are you on one of these low carb diets? I agree that eliminating refined sugar products is best but eventually all food turns to sugar/glucose in the body - it provides our energy. Refined sugar, I think, makes fat if you consume too much and messes up your insulin levels which in turn messes up all sorts of of other processes in the body. It is harder for the body to obtain energy from the breakdown of fat so it starts to crave more sugary items in order to have sufficient energy.

Regretfully I found at about age 45 that due to corticosteroids being prescribed to me and shot into me I have black spots. Crazy. Doctors NEVER tell you the long term damage to your body from medications that they prescribe to you to make you "feel better". Steriod shots into my lower back every 4 months for 7 years not only caused the black spots but the muscle "melting" around my SI joints. A construction truck just rammed into my car 2 weeks ago. I'm going as natural as I can this time. At 57 I have 90 yr old joints but I'm coming back baby, I will recover.

    Top 6 tips:
    1. Stop smoking - it oxidizes every cell on your body, especially eyes
    2. Avoid cortical steroids
    3. Eliminate sugar from diet
    4. Eliminate grains and starchy veggies
    5. Eliminate vegetable oils from diet
    6. Avoid too much alcohol
Making these changes can stop progression and possibly improve existing cataracts.

@@margaretjaeger2064 I just noticed your comment this morning. It never notified me. I appreciate you responding. It’s very encouraging to hear from others who have similar issues in their life. Yes, I did the keto way of eating although done days my sensitivity to light seemed worse and other days better. I normally don’t ask my doctor about any certain ways to eat unless I’m explaining to him about my new changes. Over these years I’ve not taken most doctors advice because I can honestly say I know from experience that things I’ve known about health have been so helpful to me that I can see for myself that these ways do in fact work. I’m not a big believer in pharmaceuticals unless absolutely necessary. I love all things natural and love working with herbs and essential oils. Recently my doctor also mentioned I should take a statin for high LDL, but I a not taking these medicines. I will change my way of eating and I also saw a good video that makes sense that the LDL isn’t always a bad thing. My doctor did tell me not to eat grains and to eat more greens, vegetables and omega 3’s fish, also chicken. He also only said this after I told him I wasn’t willing to take a statin drug. So yes, my doctor is a little bit holistic or seems. I can always switch though if I don’t care for their services. I have an insurance plan where I can get a doctor under that plan. I have tried Keto before but was confused about which foods were paleo or not since some websites say one food is ok and another is different. Fasting does work for lots of things. After the initial hunger passed I was good to go. I’ll give keto a try again and I bet my 176 LDL will be lower. I was also wondering about the 105 blood sugar which seems normal to me. Used to be 115-116 was considered pre-diabetic but they kept lowering their numbers. Wow! Well thank you for your advice. It’s nice talking to other people here and sharing. I don’t feel so alone 😊

One minor correction. You say we've been eating margarine and veg oils for "several decades". I'm a boomer (born 1954) and grew up on Oleomargarine and veg oils for cooking. Mother did too (born 1920). Oleo was developed before the turn of the century and became popular during the world wars. So it's been a CENTURY of eating bad stuff and we are seeing the results - mother had cataracts and glaucoma in her 70's. Sister developing cataracts now and at least half of my peers are having cataract surgery. Let's stop this madness of processed foods!

PhD biochemist here, now retired age 82: In 1995, I was told I had developing cataracts, and would have to have lens replacements after a few more years. So I dived into the scientific literature and learned that a Russian scientist had found that n-acetyl carnosine (NAC) could reverse cataracts. He patented some eye drops which he called Can-C, and sold them for an incredibly high price. They weren't available in the US, since not approved by the FDA. So I bought a bulk supply of powdered NAC and made a solution of 0.2g/100 ml saline (stronger than that burns my eyes). A year after my initial diagnosis, my optometrist said he saw no more trace of cataracts. I've been using my home-made drops for 30 years, and still no cataracts. Of course you can get surgery and see vast improvement esp when they are changing out the lense.
POINT IS I do not want surgery! There can always be complications, there is a cost involved, and most importantly, there are underlying conditions that are causing the cataracts that is affecting the entire body. Maybe all of you who talk about surgery should comment on the ophthalmologists videos who tell you, like mine did, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Thanks for a fine vid. A few weeks ago I had an optometry appointment and my optometrist acted slightly surprised when he checked for cataracts. I've been a 10 plus year patient of his and he'd years earlier diagnosed light cataracts. I quit drinking alcohol 10.5 years ago. Late April 2021 I had a digestive issue with bloating and gas both ends. I immediately changed my diet: dropped virtually all sweets, sugar and grain products. The exception was coffee and sugar and sour dough muffin with eggs for breakfast. Oct 15th 2021, I got a mild pain in upper abdomen....so immediately stopped all caffeine, Coffee and of course the sugar. All summer and to this time I have been consuming sometimes up to 500 to 800 calories of extra virgin olive oil, rare steak, avocado oil, sardines, tuna, salmon 2 to 3 x week, bowls of mixed frozen vegs, froz broccoli, spinach, daily organic flax seed oil, garlic stuffed olives. Plus vitamins, minerals, curcumin/peperin, about 300 mg Vit K2 5000 iu D3 (blood work is excellent for the D3 quantity for me). So I attribute, based on your video, that this cleaner diet without sugar for the most part and so forth has affected my cataracts somewhat, possibly. I lift weights, walk etc and am age 74.5 yrs.

I was diagnosed with glaucoma 4 yrs ago. All of the 4 drops caused my eyes extreme issues, one gave me a heart attack the following day, and I don't have heart disease! 3 yrs ago, my cataracts started and grew fast. 2 yrs ago they weren't ready for surgery. Last summer, my glaucoma Dr said my cataracts were in the moderate stage. I refuse cataract surgery as the UV PERMITTING lenses are no longer available, and I would suffer permanent S.A.D. depression from lack of UV in my eyes! I started using eye drops with Hialuronic acid in them, and my cataracts are disappearing. Last month at my eyeglass Dr, he said that my cataracts are the same size as they were 2 yrs ago! And the glare is much reduced, and I can read w/o my trifocals! I only wear my new glasses now to drive and watch tv if I need to read the closed captioning.
In addition to the drops, I HAVE cut back on frying by buying an Air Fryer! My use of sugar (in baking) did increase for awhile, so I've cut back on that, too. One sneaky way sugars get into your diet is with juices! I only eat organic now to eliminate the horrible chemicals, which has been THE best food decision I've ever made! So I always dilute fruit juices by 50-75% with filtered water, and only drink 12 oz diluted juice per day.
My glaucoma? I supposedly lost 50% of my dim vision, but in the past 4 months, my dim vision has IMPROVED! True! When I get up at night to pee, I can see the woodgrain flooring in a very dim orange nightlight 8 ft away. I couldn't see that in the dark 1 yr ago.
Definitely do what this doc says, it really does help.

@e4912 Read Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: (bleue) I was taking milligram doses. Handfuls. From different suppliers. (this is because I go overboard on everything I do) What happened then, my back locked up. It felt like severe painful stiffness. Maybe calcium was coming out of my discs, into the fluid? Had to crawl on my hands and knees into my car into the emergency room, calling for a wheelchair. X-rays showed nothing. They thought I was in there for the free dope. (county hospital) After stopping K2 use for a few days, my back freed up and it went the other way! I had complete fluidity of motion in my back, knees, hands like I was 10 years old again. Anyway the fogginess in my eyes, cleared up. The optometrist said I had a "2 out of 10" cataract (as he called it) (not very scientific). When I went in a year later, after the K2, the optometrist actually laughed when I asked about my cataracts. He said "you have no cataracts". I guess he forgot about his earlier diagnosis, and then didn't associate the 'me now', with the 'me then'; Because, everybody knows cataracts are not reversible. I'm 75 now. My vision is clear, but I think the musculature on my lens is becoming weak. (like everything else) It's taking longer to focus up close, some times I can't get there anymore. But I can still squint. lol

Just topped out at 70 today, regrettably I ddn't find your site, and others with similar messages early enough, and have had one cataract done which was brilliant, but due to COVID, the American Specialists have been unable to come back to our little Island and do the second one, which was already well progressed, and continues to cloud over. I did try Can-C, and it may have slowed things down just a tad, but in my case Either it didn't really work, or I was too far along when I tried it. I have seen many comments where it was helpful, but it didn't do much for me. However with a slightly lax following of your diet advice I feel I am in great shape for my age. As I have been saying to well wishers. I am 70 on the outside and 7 on the inside.

I didn’t really hear anything that would reverse cataracts that you already have. I got them from being on steroids for autoimmune disease for a year at a time (3 times). I had surgery on one eye which has left me with double vision, which is still blurry. I have to read with one eye closed. I very much afraid of having the other eye done and losing even more vision. I’ll wait until I can hardly see before doing that. I’m not diabetic, but my retinal specialist says that I’m developing diabetic-like changes in my eyes. The veins or arteries are growing in a hooked shape. Not good as it could cause an occlusion, which is why I got on steroids to begin with. Protect your eyesight, people, at all costs! It’s so precious and so easily lost.

I was told I had cataracts shortly after I started taking eye drops for glaucoma and dry eye syndrome. I noticed they reminded me of calluses, and asked my eye doctor if my eyes could be trying to protect themselves from the irritation of blinking with dry eyes and of course he said no. Since all the eye drops have preservatives, I recently asked him what the effects of preservatives are on living cells, and he didn’t know, nor could I find any info online.
I do know that vitamin D is very important for longevity and prevention of cancer, and that it is manufactured partially by sunlight on our skin and indirectly through our eyes. I always have liked to be in the sun, and although I’m in my 70s, thankfully have not had any cancer and very little skin wrinkling. I use sunscreen very seldom, as the products themselves have been proven to cause cancer. I would be interested to know if the general cancer issues multiplied more when we were told to stay out of the sun and always cover our eyes?

If you keep watching Dr. Berry, Jason Fung, and others in the low carb community, you'll eventually learn the following important fact:
_By the time a doctor diagnoses you with diabetes (especially via fasting glucose) you've probably been accumulating blood sugar damage to your body for 10 or 15 years._
I have no idea if this applies to you or not, but I can give you some signs to look out for:
      1) You eat and/or drink a lot of carbohydrates
      2) You crave carbohydrates
      3) You get blood sugar crashes
      4) You get sleepy after meals
      5) Your fasting glucose is above 90 (technically, below 100 is "normal", but if yours is above 90 you should investigate further.)
      6) You have any issues related to inflammation -- e.g. achy joints, etc.
      7) Frequent urination and/or thirst
      8) You're overweight, especially around the mid-section
      9) You have or have had PCOS.
      10) Fatigue
      11) Skin Tags
      12) Dark velvety rings of skin around neck or arm pits (Acanthosis nigricans)
      13) ALT (blood test) at the high end of the normal range (indicates fatty liver)
      14) You have a hard time losing weight.
      15) Hypertension
      16) You feel the need to eat/snack all day long
The more of these you have the more likely you are to have a stealth blood sugar / insulin issue. As non-doctors we tend to think of diabetes as a binary choice -- we either have it or we don't. To be honest, most doctors also see it this way too. But it's not he case at all.
Diabetes is a continuum, just like wealth. Saying someone is "not diabetic" is like checking someone's annual income and declaring they are "not poor" because their income is above the poverty line. An income above $20,000 may not be poverty, but it's still not a healthy income.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not trying to pin a diagnosis of blood sugar dysregulation on you or anyone else. For all I know you're 100% perfectly healthy.
I'm simply saying it can be a HUGE mistake to wait for a doctor to tell you that you have blood sugar problem.

I just got back from the eye doctor's office. My eyes felt like I needed a new prescription - I was seeing better without my glasses! At least with my right eye. So, today, I had it confirmed. My right eye has gotten 5 increments better and my left eye 2! The eye dr here is older and REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF - he's a remarkable find in a small town - known well in Austin as being the best and most interested in weird eye issues. I told him I feel like my right eye sees better w/o glasses. He checked and was a bit shocked that my right eye is on the way (age related) to a cataract, but my vision has improved sooo much - those two don't go together. And nobody's eyes get THAT much better! He said he had to walk out with my prescription as the front desk probably wouldn't believe him. We all were realizing it HAD to be CARNIVORE DIET! I've heard this from many others on the UA-cam channels, but never dreamed it would happen to me! Holy smokes! I'm so excited to tell you, and Dr. Berry about it! He said my far vision prescription is now my reading prescription! At least in my right eye. It changed THAT much!!!! I'M OVER THE MOON EXCITED - plus, you know I hand out cards with all your names on it, so people will watch you and the whole office was interested. I really hope they all will be Carnivores because of this!!! ♥♥♥

I don't smoke, rarely have a drink, and have never been on a prescriptions drug except for an antibiotic years ago. I'm 70 so I'm thinking, in my case, it could just be my age. I did read in one of the comments about taking Vitamin C. I used to take that regularly but stopped. Don't know why. I think I'll start taking it again. Can't hurt, can it? Thanks for a great video.

My sight has NEVER BEEN THE SAME since my cataract surgery, and I'm FURIOUS about it! I now see spots, "gnats," "curtains," have cloudiness and what looks like I'm looking through a moving "oil slick." Not only that but because my insurance only covered ONE lens, and a low-level, single vision lens at that, I have to wear readers all the time. Anything closer than 5 feet is fuzzy, and putting on makeup is now a near impossibility. So if you are contemplating getting cataract surgery....think long and hard about it before pulling the trigger!

@Hereandthere andnowinyourface well honey, yay you. You're very lucky to have that, that's truly a blessing. OH I KNOW VERY WELL the pitfalls of US medicine, because its based on profit, not on actual health. We ALL know this. But not much we can do there. So telling me "nanny nanny boo boo" really doesn't help here. There are pitfalls to your medical methodologies as well. Nothing is a perfect system!

More to the point, any surgery has risks. Be diligent in getting a diagnosis, the reputation/experience of the medical personnel, and possible results. Sometimes the cure can be worse than the problem. Not everyone has the same experiences. Sorry that yours was not a good one, Kelli blue.

In 6 months, I developed cataracts like what seemed overnight. A bout a year later I had surgery. My vision was so bad. Great now. I wish I had started keto then, maybe I could have reversed it. Thank you for all your great and informative videos! 👍

    Very interesting.
A few questions: 1) Is there a difference in glycation between sugars from different sources, such as refined sugar vs. sugar that's consumed as part of a whole fruit?
    2) Similarly, Is eating sunflower different than using sunflower oil, (in the context of this video)?
    3) What if we press it ourselves, (cold press)?
    4) You've mentioned that sun exposure has been around pretty much since... forever, so it's not likely to be the cause for cataracts. Using the same logic: humans have been eating grains and fruits for as long as we've been exposing our eyes to the sun, so how is that different?
    Thanks.

I just had cataract removed from my right eye... I had very bad glare and slight misting in bright light, this was caused by the cataract being behind the lens.
After being worried and nervous waiting for my op, the surgery was painless quick and my vision is amazing now, I still where glasses for long distance, I just wanted the glare gone and back to how I was when I started wearing glasses at 15 (now 54) Everybody gets cataract, some worse than others and some just don't even notice it, as a photographer I certainly noticed it! and the advances in cataract surgery is getting better all the time... Don't worry and get it sorted, if all these remedies have no effect.

I had cataract surgery in both eyes (the last eye was done back on June 1st 2020, so it's been a few months ago now). I was really afraid of surgery so I let it go on for too long, and almost became completely blind before I finally got the surgery. I actually was blind in my left eye by that time. So if there is anything that can help people avoid that, I'm all for it! The whole cataract thing can become really scary if you let it go on too long like I did.

    • @Sheryl777
      @Sheryl777 3 роки тому +25

@@shy3805 Yes I can see so much better now and thank you for asking 🧡 . But I will say that even though they may tell you ahead of time that you won't have any pain, that's not always the case. For my first eye (the left one) that they did surgery on, I had no pain, but it is still just a tad bit blurry even now, although not bad at all really. For my right eye though, and also the one I have really clear eyesight in, the first day of surgery when I came home I was in a lot of pain...However, once I rested with my eyes closed that first day, the pain did go away, so thankfully it was only that first day that I had quite a bit of pain. I'm only spelling all of that out in case it might help someone else who reads this down the road. My understanding is that most people will most likely have no pain from surgery though, so probably will not have to worry about that happening to them.

No added sugar, very low carbs, no bread or wheat or starches. My A1c is now 4.9 down from higher 8s at diagnosis. I will stay the course and take your tips to heart. I do use EVO and lemons.
