Let's assume a patient doesn't want multifocal IOLs. Would glasses with progressive lenses be a good/viable option after cataract surgery for people who chose far distance IOLs over near distance IOLs?

Wear sun glasses always, don't drink alcohol, never smoked, use electric stove, healthy weight, sugar free diet, and eat a healthy diet, take natural Vitamin C, take vitamin E .......and still at 70 I have got cataracts!!!
Unfortunately these are just things we can do to slow cataracts, not completely prevent them from happening. There are other factors out of our control like genetics, other health conditions, etc. It sounds like you are extremely healthy so I'll bet your good habits helped in other ways! Thanks for sharing

I think one of the reasons for having good eyes is genetics .my uncle , now 90 years old , he can read the smallest words without using reading glasses . He does not have to use glasses for reading . He does not get any immunisation for covil-19 and very healthy , still drives the car .
I had my cataract surgery before my lenses were 30% occluded. I'm a photographer and art curator . I didn't experience the much talked about a new experience of color or brightness but I was able to read street signs at night and and go directly to an extended productive work life for years that I might have missed
Had cataract surgery in both eyes, one week apart. Best thing ever! 5 minute procedure that was painless. 20/20 in both eyes now.

@@user-gd3bk4vb8k I'm from the UK, our NHS (National Health Service) will do if for FREE but the issue is you already have cataracts & the waiting list is like over a year maybe....which means it'll just get worse! I paid private around £1,200 each eye....amazing vision! I went for the distant lens than the close/reading lens option. I've been wearing glasses all my life....all my life & i'm just over 50, i don't need glasses now to read,only for over 2 meters for a newspaper letter size words. Driving is amazing, don't need glasses but it does make it better & crisper for road sign/directions boards & car plates. UK driving law needs us to read a number plate at approx 20 meters which i can see now WITHOUT glasses....a BONUS.

I was scheduled for surgery to replace the cataract damaged lenses in both eyes. With my wife, I changed to eating a plant based diet. After a month, the osteo arthritis pain I suffered in my toes, plantar, heels, ankles, knees, elbows, wrists and fingers (each confirmed by xray images) disappeared. Almost a year after going plant based diet, my cataracts cleared in both eyes. I phoned the optometrist and requested a new vision test before my scheduled cataract surgery. She agreed. After the new exam, she cancelled the cataract surgery for my eyes! - It was a big step to give up all meat, dairy, processed foods, oils, etc. But, the rewards to me far exceed the compromises.
People who go full carnivore have the same good results. Processed foods are the big culprit, especially sugars and highly refined carbohydrates of all kinds. I avoid GMOs, too; there's nothing I find attractive about eating genetically embedded pesticides in my food.
Just to add, I agree that seed oils are the devil. They tear up your arteries when they go through your bloodstream, for one thing. People don't realize how highly processed those seed oils are. How much oil does corn have, anyway? Not much. There's no way to get that much oil out of corn without a lot of processing.
Giving up processed foods and high carb foods is what helped. It wasn’t giving up meat.

My narrow angles, extreme farsightedness (+10) and very short eyes (nanopthalmic eyes) led to irridotomies to help fluid drain. Unfortunately, even the irridotomies couldn’t keep my intraocular pressures in A safe zone. I had my cataract surgery at age 57 paired with a gonioscopy. It was risky, but now I can see clearly and my pressures are in the normal zone! I have mad respect for my ophthalmologist!

I am 96 and I also dislike the fast talkers! You can slow them all down by pausing the video, tapping the round settings button, then tap playback speed. I always slow videos down to 75%! Try it, you will love it!

5:56 5:56 To slow down the playback speed in any podcast, you will see icons like cc and a gear like icon, if you press on that gear like icon, a menu will popup and there you can slowdown the play speed from normal to .75x .5x that your like.

You can have cataracts for a very long time before they bother you. A lot of times I doctors don’t even tell you that you have them if they’re small enough. And then at some point they just grow big enough to cause problems. And it’s not some thing that people have been doing that’s bad, it’s just aging. Of course, you can make aging worse by eating tons of sugar and not exercising, but cataracts or just some thing that most people develop if they live long enough.

I'm 68, my dad had a lens replacement surgery done. My grandfather went blind in the 60's do to Cataracts. So, I'm on the list. I have floater most likely in the left eye. Growing up in the 60's sunglasses would have been a brilliant thought. I when camping and hiking up the the mountains, higher bright lights. Also, would canoe days on a river without proper eye protection. Things have changed for the better, expect for my taxes, they still suck.

I have posterior polar sub-capsular & multiple (sub 1mm+ )anterior cataracts.
Best way to avoid surgery is have doctors who disagree. In 2011, Moms ophthalmologist said after a free slip lamp exam that I needed surgery soon. One week later (after an exam with oct & wavefront) a top dr in Los Angeles said I needed surgery in 5-10 years… three years later, moms dr said cataracts are type that dont grow so no schedule for surgery. This year, a different optometrist said I dont need surgery soon. In 2014 the posteriors were 1.2+& 1.6mm

@@bolajokoadegbenro287 3nb has been found to reduce glaucoma up to 50%. 3nB is a chemical in celery seed. One can purchase standardized 3nB in capsules. I simply buy celery extract powder (not standardized) and take 1/4 to 1/2 tsp day mixed with other herbs (multi-purpose). Celery Seed inhibits complement factor, which is high up in a chemical cascade contributing to autoimmune conditions. 3nb, or celery seed and root (the crunchy stuff you eat!) has also been shown to normalize blood pressure.
Many that didn't respond to blood pressure meds respond with celery. It's been shown to have many other preventative or correcting effects. Spices are very powerful substances for health. If you take celery seed, be sure to tell your doctor as he will watch your blood pressure, possibly lowering med. Anyways, it's my choice for prevention antioxidants and all the wonderful prevention possibilities. Keyword celery seed 3NB to find the chemical name (3NB full name). . Then keyword that with studies glaucoma. Then, judge for yourself if you want to add a little spice to your life. :).
I'm not a doctor. Just sharing information. Always make informed decisions for your own medical care. For blood pressure , most people watch their blood pressure if they are on meds and tell their doctor. Many have not needed the meds anymore. iherb is a great site for testimonials, because they have such a wide audience. You can also scan through the testimonials at amazon. It's very popular for this. For the glaucoma study (s), I don't think I've heard anyone else talking about it. I was shocked when i discovered it years ago.
Seriously, spices as a rule have LOTS of impressive studies for their health benefits. They are packed with incredible healing and prevention, in my opinion. Cinnamon is another. Just keyword Cinnamon Pubmed. Once you get inside pubmed from a link, keyword Cinnamon or one of the chemicals in cinnamon (sometimes the studies show for the chemical only, not the full plant name, or the latin name of the plant - easy enough to google plant name and latin name.). Anyways, you can scroll through the titles and see the many effects, click on the study abstract of interest. Full Studies are usually linked on the abstract. Quick scan of first few sentences and results will give you the lowdown. Then, you can dig deeper if you have interest.
I almost never tell my patients that they “need” cataract surgery. I ask them. If your daily life or safety or job function is being notably impaired, it’s time to consider it. If someone gives you a certain time frame, how could they predict your future? You will know when you need it!
Some doctors say you can wait, one doctor scheduled me for a surgery. I’m confused.

You may have just lost a little bit in the genetic lottery. My grandmother had cataracts in her 50s and she was never out in the sun and always were sunglasses. I’ve sort of inherited that as well and will probably have cataract surgery before I’m 60. It just happens.

Your advice inspirational, particularly because my eye doctor told me yesterday during my check-up for glasses (the little windows showed the row of letters on the right eye had a white background. but the left eye window had a somewhat yellowish background. She said that yellowish background was due to a cataract developing in the left eye).

They treated me so rudely, badly, and without consideration of my underlying problems, ignoring all that was discussed prior to the o.p., that my normally low blood pressure went through the roof.
After the injection and endless waiting, I was told that I could not be operated on. They told me that I should remain in the hospital in an different room until my blood pressure changed.
By than I felt like an animal in an abattoir and my intuition told me to go home.
I found out that there was another person on that day that also went home without finalising his cataract operation.
Now that I took the time to answer you, please be so kind and tell me your story.

Wise as it may be to avoid cataract surgery and surgery in general, my extreme nearsighted vision has been markedly improved by the plastic lenses that replaced my cataracted natural lenses. The surgeries were done rather quickly in what seemed like an office visit and called for sedation only. I still wear glasses for distance vision, but I can read books or see my computer screen without the series of glasses I wore from age 13. However, I'm 89 years old and now have other eye problems.

Yes, you will hear a lot of opinions, even amongst eye surgeons! My advice is to wait until you are bothered by your quality of vision and if in doubt, get multiple opinions. Best of luck!
@@MicheleLeeMD Thanks, Dr. Lee! My concen, or 'a' concern, is Laser assisted versus manual. I've seen scanning microscope photos of laser assisted eyes that look terrifying. I'd prefer 'manual' but in an evaluation the surgeon who does laser was almost jumping off the ground - he was so vehement that laser is 'safer.' But another evaluating surgeon said, "it's way worse an outcome."
@@Allan-et5ig There is no proof either way that one is better than the other for routine cataracts. Laser-assisted surgery can help with astigmatism correction but that is about it. Some surgeons prefer using laser since it performs some of the steps and softens the lens. Hope that answers your question!

Howdy Doctor, I recently discovered your videos and really find them very interesting and enjoyable to watch. I am 75 and within the last 2 years my eye doctor has been recommending cataract surgery. I suffer from Blepharitis which never really seems to be completely gone, although most times I can seem to keep it under control. I have read that many times after surgery Blepharitis becomes an issue. Do you have any advice or additional steps I should take. Thank you again for such educational content.
Hi and thank you for your kind words and comment! Dry eye usually gets worse after cataract surgery, and while you could try to prepare for it using preservative-free tears, there is not much you can do before surgery to prevent it from happening. Also, your dry eye treatment depends on what kind of dry eye you have so I would work with your eye doctor to optimize your dry eyes before surgery.

I've developed cataracts after long-term steroid use as part of my immunosuppressive regime following a kidney transplant. I'm not diabetic and am otherwise reasonably healthy though I do suffer from UTIs and kidney infections. I'm recovering from one the moment. I have UV protection built into my prescription glasses and I only take them off to shower or sleep. The extra cost was worth it. Thanks for your video. I knew carrots were good for your eyes. LOL

Hazards of delaying cataract surgery:
Follow any step you want to but be careful, these steps not gonna delay ageing of the eye. For example surgery of same grade of cataract at 50 years of age is far far better than at 80 years of age. Reason: the zonules in the eye which support lens become weaker with increasing age. Corneal endothelial cells are also diminishing with advancing age which is required to keep cornea clear.
So, this is the complete picture. You might delay progression of lens Cataract- but at the same time your surgeries after few years would be riskier.
Thank you for your comment. It is true in that as we age there are issues with other parts of the eye besides the cataract itself. Some people want to hold off as long as possible to have any procedure or surgery, so this video is made for those who want to delay cataract surgery and/or try not to ever have surgery at all. These tips are also good tips in general for eye health and overall health too.

In dentistry UV lights are used very often. Dental
profesionales are at greatest risk if a shield protection is not used.
Don't forget the yellow, orange, and red bell peppers. Also no harm in including an AREDS2 supplement for the eyes.

Thank you Dr. Lee for this informative video on helping to slow cataract development and possible surgery. I am being treated by an opthamoligist for glaucoma now and he is very closely monitoring my cataract. I am 80 years old and in 2016 I had an ocular melanoma and had a enucleation of my left eye. I have a prosthetic and am doing well. But he is very concerned about the cataract and says he will only perform surgery when and if it gets to that point, as, yes, sometimes surgeries don't always go well and he doesn't want me to lose both

I had both eyes done , unfortunately my left eye was a failure, now they want me to have a cornea transplant , I am way too scared to have to go through another eye operation , I am hoping my eyesight in the left eye will slowly come back by eating well ,,,, thank you 😊

Im 64 and last week had a cataract surgery in 1 eye,although they say its simple ect its still not pleasant going through with it,my hospital they were wonderful, kind,caring and very good hospital. I am being carful but as I have other health issues I'm still feeling as though I'm not myself. It really has cleared my vision in that eye,but I feel fragile, I think it takes a few weeks to feel more yourself.im so sorry that your left was a failure, and if you are able znd do go ahead with the cornea transplant I would imagine they will put you under general anesthesthetic? I am sure that because its our eyes znd face its a scary thing isn't it,xxi am wondering as im watching this a year on from when it came out, that you may have had surgery, if so how are you now and please know I am including you in my prayers, xxlove Heather in ukxx

I’m 80. Have a small cataract in right eye. Have been vegetarian at least half to three quarters of my live. Don’t wear sunscreen . No sunglasses except when driving in bright light. Take supplements that includes Idoral iodine. Estrace vag cream weekly. Very active in retirement from Nursing on woodland tree farm. Have three kids and a dog and my sweetheart.
Drink red wine when I feel like it.

I have researched drops to help with eye health and found OCLUMED. What is not clear to me is, do eye drops penetrate the eye to where the cataract lens is? Hope you can explain the absorption of these/any eye drops? Tks

What are they called
For me at 36, I started developing a cataract within 3 years of getting ICL surgery. I lived a healthy lifestyle and followed all of those tips. It could have been because of my -16D pre-ICL surgery prescription, or maybe just the surgery, or maybe a combination of a lot of things. I guess I'll never know, but I'm just worried about having to put on glasses every time I have to read something and take them off immediately after.
It sounds like you have a few risk factors for cataracts. Having any eye surgery, even ICL, will put you at risk of earlier cataract surgery. Also being very nearsighted can put you at risk as well. If you haven't gotten your cataract surgery yet, I hope things go well!
Dr explain the issues being very near sighted myoptic. I have this issue and I have heard my error ratio is unbelievable.
You need to get your vitamin D3 checked you need to take that with K complex almost everybody in the world is low in vitamin D three and the doctor will give you a synthetic vitamin D to it’s not the same it’s a natural send screen and protect your eyes I am 68 years old and I have 15/15 vision I never wear sunglasses never have never will I do use hats because I love them to keep sun out of my eyes but I’m not gonna look straight up at the same anyway and that’s the only way you can get vitamin D three the sun Hass to come in to your eyes so sunscreen and sunglasses keep you from getting enough vitamin D three that’s a fact do research I’m not joking and vitamin D3 is actually a hormone

I''ll surely warn my friends. I'm 60 and have had damage to my vision from autoimmune. I was just diagnosed with early cataract.
I'm determined to avoid surgery and prevent growth, even dissolve the cataract by natural means. I've worked with herbs over forty years. There is a lot of science on herbs. I just had cataract surgery 3 weeks ago still healing. I stent was to put in dr advised me that my mesh would not safely allow that. So back to the drops which isn’t effective. One thing doctor mentioned to me that l his patents he advised them to stop drinking coffee even decaf. This is one drink that definitely raises the IOP. Glad I don’t like coffee with my issues.

My dad died at 89 and I was disgusted when his optometrist insisted every year that "dad would have cataracts next year because everybody gets them.". I told my dad's optometrist, sorry, doc, stuff your negativity. We finally changed eye Drs at 85 years old. Dad died with no cataracts from a hospital acquired infection post-surgery. Hospitals errors are the 3rd greatest cause of death in the US and most certainly have increased due to certain protocols during 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023. Not everybody gets cataracts. It is a rusting of the eyes due to lack of antioxidants and toxicity of your body, especially heavy metals, which makes sense because cigarette smoke is loaded with cadmium.

1 Wear sunglasses 2 don't drink alcohol (except maybe a little red wine) 3 don't smoke 4 stay healthy not too much sugar in diet 5 vitamin c in healthy diet. I do all that but had cataracts by age 70 needing surgery which was successful.
Yes, thanks for sharing! These are risk factors one can do but there are definitely noncontrollable risks like age, genetics, health conditions, etc.
Hello, thank you for covering this topic. I am 63 years old and have been told for years I'm getting cataracts. Problem, my right eye is legally blind. It was from a lazy eye that wasn't caught in time. Worried if the cataracts get really bad, what happens if I get surgery and the surgery on my good eye goes wrong? Then I will be totally blind. I have been told by several eye doctors not to get Lazik because I would be forever blind if it doesn't go well. The doctors tell me to run away if anyone wants to do any kind of eye surgery due to I only have one working eye. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Any comments or suggestions? Look for Dr John Christopher eyewash recipe. You can find it online. You steep natural herbs and rinse your with an eye cup. It has helped me a lot. @@debwoods3831 I'm in the same position as you and JrBrass... vision only in one good eye. And I'm in my late 30s and think about stuff like this now. Reading your comment is very worrisome. Outside of positive affirmations I say to myself like "My one good eye is protected"... i try to look up different things that could lead to cataracts. Do you drink enough water during the day? I was reading about how dehydration can speed up cataracts or make them develop. Do you have a calcium deficiency? Do you have a vitamin D deficiency? or a parathyroid deficiency?
