    Very interesting, thanks. I don't run Windows, I been running Linux for about 10 years and this could open up a lot of my old Windows games to me.

      Yeah give it a try, though you'll have to compile it first from what I've seen but you have been using Linux for so long so you might know a thing or two about that.

    • @computercatgaming02
      @computercatgaming02  4 роки тому

      Also did you get it to run? I haven't been lucky with getting PCem to run on Linux Mint..

      @@computercatgaming02 Not so far. I had trouble compiling it, due to not knowing exactly what dependencies were required. I installed lots of 'dev' packages, and that seemed to work, but then I couldn't get it to 'make' properly. I've sort of given up, to be honest. I don't know why, for this software, there are no downloadable binaries, or at least a more step-by-step guide to compiling somewhere. What a pity. To test it out, and see what sort of speed PC is needed, I might resort to installing a version of Windows on something.

      @@MarkTheMorose actually I got it to work after a while but from what I experienced in Linux Mint so was it slower than when I tried it under Windows 10.

    For me this is clearly the best solution to play old dos and win98 games. It runs perfect on my small i5 config. Ok, it takes time to configure the first time, compared to other solutions (Such as dosbox).
    And the addition of 3dfx support makes it very unique and the BEST solution for 3dfx retrogaming. I tried it on a cheap Ryzen 2200 and it runs even better than my i5.

    I have a some more questions if that's okay, still learning about this PCem. Do you have a good graphics card file, or link to find it or anything? Also, just curious why were you not able to play Delta Force? Are you not able to improve the Emulation to play it? Are there games that won't play to it's full performance with the Emulator, it so, why is that?

    • @computercatgaming02
      @computercatgaming02  4 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure the garphics cards are included but I can return on that. However BIOS ROM files for the motherboards are not included.
      And the reason why Delta Force was unplayable was because it wants at least a Pentium II which still can't be emulated, and even if it could be emulated it wouldn't work on my PC because it would require much more processing power to be emulated. This is the reason why I am not emulating a high spec CPU in this video because my i5 2500k would struggle to keep the speed up.
      So if your struggling with keeping the speed to 100% I recommend downgrading the CPU being emulated.

    8:08 oh man, the first SIMS game is a HOG. I'd try this in a VM instead of PCem; I recall it having rather bad performance even on an Athlon XP at the time. Maybe that was because my wife loaded it up with all kinds of additional assets, but I couldn't imagine running this game on "only" a Socket 7 type situation...

    "I have some small issues with 95...like with some drivers..."
    I don't think that's an issue with the emulation...That was win 95 in a nutshell ;)

    • @computercatgaming02
      @computercatgaming02  4 роки тому +3

      Haha yes, definitely that since I'm soo inexperienced with 95 since I always go with 98 when I install an 9x os on an old PC.

    • @MitchBurns09
      @MitchBurns09 4 роки тому +2

      Agree 100% a lot of people say 95 is faster BUT I use 98SE as its simply much better to install drivers etc. JUST got my voodoo2 and stuff finally working with this now I just need to wait until PCem is able to utilize (or uses/emulates) better graphics cards

    • @cryptidproductions3160

      Can confirm
      I have a secondary Windows 95 machine in my PCEM that's still half-configured because it won't even register a Voodoo card as a supported device even though everything says even a Voodoo 2 should be 95 compatible
      Windows 98SE is just so much better in every conceivable way so that's what I use on my primary configuration

    Hi, pc cat ! I'm currently looking for a budget cpu especially for PCem purposes. Do you think cores/threads count matters for PCem? like, if 4/4 is better than 4/8 ? Can hyper-threading aka SMT hurt the performance? I know that PCem mostly depends on max #GHz per core and AVX + AVX2.... but I just can't let go of this wild guess, about hyper-threading influence. What do you think?

    • @computercatgaming02
      @computercatgaming02  4 роки тому

      Yeah like you said, it benefits more a strong core than multiple weaker ones so yeah hyperthreading will probably not be your best bet. What's the budget and how new are you willing to go?

      @@ttfd I don't know how the performance is on AMD, only tried it on an i5 2500k @4.4GHz and a C2Q Q8400 @3.6GHz (the c2q couldn't handle cpu frequencies over 90MHz)

    one day... PcEm will go multi threaded, or improve enough as that we can actually emulate a Pentium 2 :D

    • @shadowtheimpure
      @shadowtheimpure 3 роки тому

      Either that or the single core performance and IPC will get high enough.

    • @Vlad-1986
      @Vlad-1986 3 роки тому

      @@shadowtheimpure Man, we have been stuck with the same cpu clock speed for a long time, close to a decade. In some cases we went LOWER. They try to make it up by increasing threads, but that won't help a single core hardcoded program like PCem. Same happened with DosBOX... it wouldn't run properly on computer of the time, but at least tech was advancing back then.
