@@lolzlmaorofl yes Ryzen CPU. I found some people asking this same question on other forums, I found that if I turn off Hardware Virtualisation it does run. Not very well but it does finish the install and run
I've been trying to get this to work for a month on my own to no avail. You have fixed it for me with these very comprehensive instructions. Thank you so much.
Awesome, clear, well-paced video. I went from knowing near nothing of virtual machines to being up & running for my purposes half way through the video. Thanks! I wanted to highlight two errors & solutions for everyone. From the comments, many others ran into them too, but I really had to dig to find a comment that solved each, so I am putting the solutions together here. Note that I am using VirtualBox 6.1.28. These two problems appear to be caused if you're using a Ryzen CPU. First, upon a successful install and getting to Windows, you'll get this error: "The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL: tFileAttributesA." Explorer will probably also crash and you cannot do anything with the desktop. To solve this, go to your VM settings -> system -> acceleration tab -> uncheck "Enable Nested Paging" under Hardware Virtualization. The error should no longer occur. The second issue is that once you install SciTech Display Doctor, you may get a blue screen. Upon any further boots, you will encounter this error: "Windows Protection Error, you need to restart your system." The solution is outlined in this video: ua-cam.com/video/dthSP0np8Rw/v-deo.html But, in case that video ever disappears, here is the solution: in your computer (not the VM), open the command prompt and navigate to where VirtualBox is installed (probably C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox). Input one of the following commands. Remember to replace "VM name" with the name of your VM (if you followed this tutorial, it would be "Windows 98"). You may need to try more than one to find a suitable fix. I used the fourth one (Intel Core i5-3570) and that worked: VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Xeon X5482 3.20GHz" VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-2635QM" VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-3960X" VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i5-3570" VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-5600U" VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-6700K" Hope this helps someone!
hey if anyone else is as stupid as me when it comes to the command prompt, in order to navigate to the folder, you must put "cd" before the folder name. and then after you press enter, you type the command with "VM name" as "Windows 98" and it should work!
Thank you!! It worked for me! I was receiving an error after instalation and all I had to do was to disable the nested pagination. Then it worked pretty well.
Very good explanations and very well detailed. It's really great to have put all the links. I am really happy to be able to play my old Windows 95 and 98 games with my children during confinement (lockdown). Thank you very much from France
Nice work there! Had troubles with the path for that mouse thing. Just didn't work for me for some reason. And the display doctor part didn't work either (it said that it would require a newer version of windows - i just googled your version, found another file and it worked). Now i can play old games that don't run on modern Win. You are a hero. If you'd install a donate button, you could become a millionaire in a year or less. ;) Thanks again. Feel honored to help so many people.
the same thing happened to me with the display doctor! please tell me you remember the link you found the other file because I cant find one for the life of me
Hello, mate. I'm having trouble with internet connection in Windows ME Retail, running inside VMware workstation. I did exactly the same procedure like you, but I still cannot hit google url.... Any tip would be great, thanks
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this fantastic video. I wanted Windows 98 so I could run an old game of Combat Flight Simulator. With your video I was eventually able to get Windows 98 working on my Lubuntu Linux PC as a virtual machine using VirtualBox. The mouse works great too. I did have a few hiccups on the way and here are the steps that worked for me in the end. 1) I found it best to run the "VBoxManage" command (that modified my virtual machine for better mouse performance) before my first attempt to start the Virtual Machine using the Windows 98 ISO file. a) On my Linux machine I didn't need to specify the path of the VBoxManage command. I also didn't need the .exe extension for VBoxManage. My command was as follows: VBoxManage setextradata "Your VM Name Here" VBoxInternal/USB/HidMouse/0/Config/CoordShift 0 If I waited till later to run this command (at the point you had in your video) I had serious mouse issues when setting the time and date and also my VM crashed with a HID mouse driver fail error when I tried to start the VM again. 2) The Link you provided to download the SciTech Version 7 Beta Doctor utility downloaded a file that was flagged by a Windows 10 PC I had as being potentially problematic by Windows Defender. The file had a non descriptive name and my Windows Defender definitely didn't like it. I was able to find elsewhere on the internet the utility with a more appropriate name. It also came bundled with the sdd.iso file already made for me. I did download it on my Linux machine though. 3) On my Linux VirtualBox setup, after I attached the ssd.iso file and configured my display for 1024x768 I got a "Windows Protecion" error when I restared. Researching online I found out that this error was due to my SciTech driver not liking what ever CPU I had (I had an Amd Athlon II). I was able to solve the problem with the following command which spoofed the Virtual Machine into reporting a different cpu type to the SciTech driver. I ran this command before attaching the "ssd.iso" file and encountered no more issues. VBoxManage modifyvm "Your Vm Name Here" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i5-3570"
So I'm revisiting a project I've been doing wanting to do and while installing the graphics for Windows 98, it seems to not like SDD after rebooting. It blue screen and locks up after rebooting itself again with a message: "Windows Protection Error, you need to restart your system." With this, I've followed to the T with your instructions. I also tried re-burning the sdd.exe again, no luck. The Blue Screen says: Windows A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 0028:C008 F38C in VXD sddhelp(01) + 00013024. Great tutorial!!! I can say hands down, the best on the net. I searched everywhere and none were as detailed or thorough as this... Thanks for this! Now, I can play all the old awesome games from the 90s!!! Thanks again
I recommend using PCem for Windows 9x instead of VirtualBox. PCem emulates different sound cards (SB16, GUS, MT32) and graphics cards (S3 ViRGE, Voodoo). Windows 98 in PCem runs perfectly, the same way as it used to run on real hardware. And all games work as well. The only downside with PCem is that it requires more CPU power than VirtualBox (since PCem emulates the hardware).
Zirkoni88, on VMware Player I get so many errors during installation and while using Win98. It's causing me a lot of grief. Do you have any errors like that at all with PCem? Also haven't watched this video in a while, so I don't recall if this virtual box set-up has any problems like that.
People say the same about DosEmu but I could never find easy tutorials for installation. Would you mind uploading your PCem virtual machine for us? I feel like there's no guide to learn how to do this stuff, it's insanely complicated process. And Dosbox is still too slow for certain SVGA 3D games.
Thank you. I will have a play with this and see what I can do with it. It might be worth doing a comparison video. The hardware emulation looks really interesting.
When I am nearing completion on the Windows 98 install, I keep getting "The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:tFileAttributesA." error message. I have tried to install multiple times following the directions but I keep running into this same problem. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? EDIT: From what I can tell, it is because of my AMD Ryzen processor
Yes, I only have Intel processor computers and as a result have never been able to test this. You are probably right, nearly everyone that has a problem are running AMD processors. Unfortunately, I do not know the solution, however, there are some setting in the VM that might help with some eperimentation.
@@steve24822 the solution I've found for Ryzen is to goto system, acceleration, and disable nested paging. It might give a alight performance hit though for some people.
Everything went fine for the first half, but when I got to 13:30, in front of the login screen it gave me an error saying "The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:tFileAttributesA.". Then after that it just gives me an error on Explorer.exe saying "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor"
you probably won't see this reply, but I had the same issue, after a bit of research it's because we're using Ryzen CPUs, because Ryzen has some trouble running 32 bit applications this is what causes that problem. In order to fix it you need to boot Windows 98 into safe mode, which will skip all processes that aren't required, such as SHLWAPI.DLL. To go into safe mode, the second your you selct boot from hard disk, press left control, this will put you in a prompt asking you how you want to boot windows. Select safe mode. From there you should boot into windows. Right click on the computer icon it File System, then Troubleshooting, then click on the tick next to where it says Disable all 32-bit protected mode disk drivers. This will disable the incompatible drivers. It will ask you to restart your computer, go ahead and restart it. You should be able to boot into windows normally now. Hope this helps :)
@@arskamusicman7444 using windows without any of the drivers prevents basically anything from working. Unfortunately this isn’t fixable without using something that emulates a CPU. What I’m currently doing is using the 64 bit version of Windows XP, because it can run most Windows 95 stuff, and run on Ryzen. The only problem is, it’s harder to find online. A good place to look would be archive.org, in their software section

Ah this was confusing because the option was not shown. Apparently the reason it was not shown is that it is a required option so you can't turn it off anyway. But that makes the warning message very confusing. The actual solution was to turn on IVT (Intel Virtual Technology) in the UEFI. Now the warning is gone. What a confusing warning. It should really say "IVT is required for this machine, please enable it" not tell me to turn off an option that I can't actually turn off.

First, upon a successful install and getting to Windows, you'll get this error:
"The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL: tFileAttributesA." Explorer will probably also crash and you cannot do anything with the desktop.
To solve this, go to your VM settings -> system -> acceleration tab -> uncheck "Enable Nested Paging" under Hardware Virtualization. The error should no longer occur.
The second issue is that once you install SciTech Display Doctor, you may get a blue screen. Upon any further boots, you will encounter this error: "Windows Protection Error, you need to restart your system."
The solution is outlined in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/dthSP0np8Rw/v-deo.html
But, in case that video ever disappears, here is the solution: in your computer (not the VM), open the command prompt and navigate to where VirtualBox is installed (probably C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox).
Input one of the following commands. Remember to replace "VM name" with the name of your VM (if you followed this tutorial, it would be "Windows 98"). You may need to try more than one to find a suitable fix. I used the fourth one (Intel Core i5-3570) and that worked:
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Xeon X5482 3.20GHz"
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-2635QM"
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-3960X"
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i5-3570"
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-5600U"
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-6700K"
Hope this helps someone!
tysm!, I had a ryzen cpu and you helped me a lot. Thanks again
Thank you! I was looking all over and wondering why nothing worked. Ended up with a working Win95 install.
THIS needs to be pinned. Thank YOU
hey if anyone else is as stupid as me when it comes to the command prompt, in order to navigate to the folder, you must put "cd" before the folder name. and then after you press enter, you type the command with "VM name" as "Windows 98" and it should work!
Thank you!! It worked for me! I was receiving an error after instalation and all I had to do was to disable the nested pagination. Then it worked pretty well.

Erika CH mine just worked without the command
My command was as follows:
VBoxManage setextradata "Your VM Name Here" VBoxInternal/USB/HidMouse/0/Config/CoordShift 0
If I waited till later to run this command (at the point you had in your video) I had serious mouse issues when setting the time and date and also my VM crashed with a HID mouse driver fail error when I tried to start the VM again.
The Blue Screen says:

Thank you soooo much for these amazing videos, they were perfect for a total beginner like me!
Brilliant, I followed your instructions exactly and I was able to get Windows 98 running perfectly on my virtual machine. Thank you very much!
@@Ne1s0n64 You can also use Virtual PC 2007.

EDIT: From what I can tell, it is because of my AMD Ryzen processor
Have you found a solution yet? I'm getting that right now too - also with AMD Ryzen
Yes, I only have Intel processor computers and as a result have never been able to test this. You are probably right, nearly everyone that has a problem are running AMD processors. you probably won't see this reply, but I had the same issue, after a bit of research it's because we're using Ryzen CPUs, because Ryzen has some trouble running 32 bit applications this is what causes that problem.
@@LarrythePig I did this but now I don't see the D drive. Is D drive 32-bit protected disk driver?
@@arskamusicman7444 using windows without any of the drivers prevents basically anything from working. Unfortunately this isn’t fixable without using something that emulates a CPU. What I’m currently doing is using the 64 bit version of Windows XP, because it can run most Windows 95 stuff, and run on Ryzen. The only problem is, it’s harder to find online. When I try to run the sdd.iso after attaching it to the D drive of Windows 98 machine, it says "The D:\75661_VMDIJ.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version." Now I saw it's probable you selected the Mouse instead of the Tablet as the Pointing Device. Moment 5:15 of the video. (I also did that because I don't have a tablet, but I guess it doesn't matter, so you should change that in Configuration, and proceed.
@@jacintolorenzo2362 As of the newest Vbox, that step is unnecessary and is actually messes things up. Use the regular mouse and don't mess with adding the command prompt stuff.
Did you switch your pointing device to "USB Tablet" as well as checking "Enable I/O APIC" in the system menu in virtual box? That fixed the issue for me.

When I try to follow your instructions to changing the settings, a warning triangle appears with the message "Invalid Settings Detected: "The hardware virtualization is enabled in the Acceleration section of the system page although it it not supported by the host system. It should be disabled in order to start the virtual system." When I go to the Acceleration section of the system page, there are two options. "Paravizualization Interface" and "Hardware Virtualization: Enable Nested Paging" I've tried all combinations of those settings and the warning will not go away. I am unable to click on the OK button (it is greyed out) presumably because of the warning. Any ideas what I should do?
Ah this was confusing because the option was not shown. Apparently the reason it was not shown is that it is a required option so you can't turn it off anyway. But that makes the warning message very confusing. The actual solution was to turn on IVT (Intel Virtual Technology) in the UEFI. Now the warning is gone. What a confusing warning. It should really say "IVT is required for this machine, please enable it" not tell me to turn off an option that I can't actually turn off.
Hi, everything went so well, but I'm getting an error when I'm at the 'Enter Network Password' screen (13:33). After that, I can only see the empty blue background with no start menu. What can I do now?
Please help i downloaded win98 2nd edition (german) from Archive.org but i canť find the Product Key!
Great tutorial, but I had an issue with the SciTech Display Doctor software. When I tried to open it, Windows gave me an error message saying "This software is expecting a newer version of Windows."
Had the same problem. I'm thinking that someone either updated it or swapped it out with somethen' else. I did find an alternative though: looked up the program up by name and there was an internet archive storing the original one. Slapped it in and its working flawlessly so far. hope that helps :D
