The nerdy me is so happy. 😂 I know this took almost a year to complete, compiling footages and research materials and waiting for your plants to cooperate with your plan. I am so very proud of you. That was very enjoyable, and packed with great information
    That's the main reason I enjoy your vids and know that you
    Are in the same country as me.
    And so a question on the pumice, you say clean,sterile, and reuse,
    Something I have done for a few year's while growing orchids.,
    My method of cleaning is to place in a porous bag and simply
    Put the bag in the dishwasher! As for sterilizing I never have.
    So ,now that I will be going from one type of plant to another
    Your method of sterilisation please.
    Well done as always Daz,a joy to watch.
    ,Bill.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 роки тому +2

      I tend not to reuse any material now, but when I did I simply sterilised it with boiling water. The only time I’d reuse potting mix now is if the plant hasn’t been in it for long, but six months or more I’ll just discard it. Thanks for watching and commenting, have a wonderful evening from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    very interesting video. I live in Sicily and I don't have all the problems you can have at home. my Haworthias grow both in pots and in the ground. Thank you so much, Claire 😊 Yeah don’t be afraid to water them over winter, as yours are indoors they will be actively growing. Your potting mix is excellent so they’ll do very well in that. Haworthia aren’t really picky about what they grow in, it’s just like many succulents they don’t like their roots to be wet for too long. Thank you for watching and commenting as always, Claire. Been waiting for this video but it was worth the long wait. Great footages you have here. It is very comprehensive too. 👍🏼 Haworthia may not be able to withstand direct sunlight but they can withstand extreme heat. From experience, as long as they are in shade, they will withstand temperatures over 110F/43.3C. They will go dormant but they will survive. That is why Haworthias are among the few fleshy succulents that I grow in the desert. Next video… Haworthia propagation! 😃 Excellent video, Daz. Your Haworthia collection is impressive.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much, Ana 😊 Yes they can take high temperatures, it’s when the nighttime temperatures are consistently high that it can really stress them out. This summer when nighttime temps were high a lot of my Haworthia actually looked pretty bad, now we’re into autumn and it’s much cooler they’re looking much better. Hi Daz , very helpful video. I have a few Haworthia: Haworthia attenuata , coartica , Prince Albert, pumila, and a couple unnamed varieties . I’m a novice at this so I followed the potting soil requirements from videos , given them bright light inside and out , but only one is thriving and noticeably growing while the others have barely changed. ( I’ve had them slightly more than a year , maybe two)
    I put them out on my shaded front porch when they weren’t growing inside, but it’s been So hot this summer ( night time temps over 90 degrees , daytime over 105 everyday! ) so I brought them inside on my N.East windowsill and 3 more under a grow light. ( they’ve been inside now for 2 weeks)
    I have only misted them because I was afraid they were probably dormant and started a foliage spray feeding too. I suspect my tap water is the culprit ( our Dallas water is loaded with fluorides and chlorine ). Do you think that is why my Haworthias are not growing ?
    Sorry for the long comment, just trying to find answers.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  Рік тому

      Yeah I’d certainly recommend using rain water if you can. Some Haworthia can go dormant during very hot weather, especially if nighttime temperatures are high. Slow growth or no growth at all could be an issue with roots, a lot of Haworthia will go through a root shedding phase every year, especially if the mix they were growing in is completely changed to something new. Great video! Interesting to hear it's best to water in the evening, I have been doing it by accident just because the evening is when I usually procrastinate going to sleep and end up looking over my plants :) . If I can ask, where did you get so many amazing species being in the UK? I find that when I try to look for sellers they're mostly from Asia, and apart from the shipping price being more than a pricy plant, I am worried about phytosanitary documents, plants coming into EU and all... I'd love to slowly get more interesting varieties when I get more space for them.

      @@Cactimania Thanks so much for your reply 👍🏼 I’m brand new to these types of Haworthia and recently bought 8 of them bare root that I need to get potted. All I have is Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix, and an additional bag of pine bark.
      I’m not sure if you’re aware of Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix or not? But it already contains 30% pine coir as it’s organic component. I’ve had much success with it for the past 2 years with all my succulents for nearly 100% of the time and the other, much cheaper types of Haworthia I have (like Zebra Haworthia) are doing great with it.
      I’ve seen one person online mention adding additional pine bark to that mix for the type of Haworthia we’re talking about now, but since it already has 30% I’m wondering what you’re opinion might be seeing that you’re finding that the smaller amounts of organic material mixes are working best?

    Quick question, my haworthia are going soft and shriveled, what is the cause? And how far should my 1000 watt led grow lights be from the plants?

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 роки тому +1

      That’s usually a sign of dehydration and them wanting more water, but if you’re watering them and they’re still soft and shrivelled that can be a sign they’re dormant and not taking up that water. A 1000watt grow light for Haworthia is pretty strong, I wouldn’t have that any closer than about 25iches from the top of the plants. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜

    I have just brought a new Haworthia 'Savanna' home from Morrisons and as I was getting it out of the bag I caught one of the leaves and it has partially broken. Is this leaf now a gonna or can I band aid it as it's not completely severed it? If I remove the leaf completely, will this encourage it to grow a pup there instead? Or will it always remain a leaf missing? I am a novice so haven't got a clue!

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  Рік тому

      It might completely heal, or the plant could possibly purge it. Either way it’s a good idea to leave it and not pull it off completely. It might grow a pup from there depending on the species, some Haworthia remain solitary. If the leaf is lost then over time you won’t notice as the plant grows. I've just sown quite a few Haworthia seeds of various types. Where would you say is the best position for them for optimal growth for the first year? I have a south facing windowsill (UK) using shade cloth, north facing windowsill, a Spider Farmer SF300 33W growlight in a small grow tent giving 8000 lux or under growlight with shade cloth giving 3000 lux? They are currently in my grow tent with cacti seedlngs but I'm thinking they may be happier on a south facing windowsill using a shade cloth to keep off direct sun, it'll be cooler than the grow tent. What do you reckon? Cheers!

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 роки тому +1

      I'd personally have them on the south facing window. That's where most of my Haworthia seedlings are. They don't get any direct sunlight, but on a table in-front of the window where they get bright indirect light. Haworthia seedlings will soon let you know if they're getting too much light, they'll soon develop a tan haha. You could always try both as an experiment, see which do better on the sill or in the tent under the light. Good luck with them. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀🌼🌺🏜
