      Gets even wilder, when you see him critize the amount of damage the player takes as too big while also having a soreseal equiped. I mean... ofc you get two shot, when you reduce your damage resistance by 25%, are not wearing high resistance armor (like another ~10% damage resistance missing) and also do not equip any of the damage resistance talisnams which makes you miss out on up to 20% damage resistance. That does not mention any of the damage resis buffs from the physick or ashes of war or incantations.
      Add to all of that people not understanding the relation of percentages and absolute numbers and you get gems like ~10% resistance total with 1500hp with ~60-80% resistance possible for a health pool of 2400 points. Bonus points for you when you know what "effective Hit points" are...
      It is totally possible to not sacrifice any damage and to tank 3-4 hits in late game eras.

    The term "UX" pretty much always relates to how a user interacts with a program, or rather the user interface (UI), like how you interact with a graphical user interface and how efficiently you can do tasks through it. So in case of video games it only applies to things like control schemes, menu navigation and so on, and not to the gameplay itself. It really is a term that's more often used in case of software like browsers, file managers, editors etc than with video games.

    • @Jupa
      @Jupa 6 місяців тому

      I’d say that’s because UX is quite neglected in video games, whereas the implementation is very much important everywhere else.
      I do want to see studios focus on UX. Hell even I slept on FS games for ages because I just didn’t understand the menu and navigation. But FS is far from the worst culprit.
      It’s also worth noting that Japanese user navigation is so much more different than Western types. They favour a more holistic approach.

    • @MrRalphbro
      @MrRalphbro 3 місяці тому

      I think game UX is part of the gameplay like as like you say it relates to how it interacts with the game.
      Take the quest mark debate as an example. Wouldn’t you think that the choice for not having a giant ‘!’ UI icon above npcs is an intentional choice to make a unique User(gamer) Experience?

    Vigor really isn't optional here like it was in Souls. The endgame difficultly spike did force me to experience more of the game my first time through, and raising vigor near the softcap of 60 gets you that margin for error back. I don't see it as a problem, the enimies hit hard and you are required to find a way to deal with that fact.

      I buff my weapons, I use items, I cast a few spells...basically, experiment with stuff. I'm tackling the endgame bosses with all the trial and error I can handle, and it's genuinely fun to see if I can just work with what I've got or if I have to find a new gameplan.

    The thing I love most about FromSoft games is that they show immense respect for their players.
    They don't dumb things down. They make progressing the game a process of exploration and discovery without much, if any, hand holding.
    They willingly risk hiding MASSIVE chunks of some of the best parts of the game in ways that some players could easily miss or never experience, which makes finding/figuring out how to access that stuff feel like a huge treat to those who like to explore every nook and cranny.
    They don't hold back with challenge, and even though they add a ton of ways to make the game easier or harder, they put that power in your hands and make it a much more organic experience rather than just clicking on a setting in a menu somewhere.
    As a huge souls fan, I still find the refined gameplay and challenge in Sekiro to be the most rewarding but for a souls game, Eldenring really is a 10 out of 10, even with it's flaws.

      Sekiro deserves a 10/10 more than Elden Ring imo. Call me a heretic, but ER really starts to drag in the latter parts of the game, and some of the combat changes are questionable. Sekiro is as close to perfect as you can get however. That game needs a sequel.

      @@jooot_6850 Nah, Sekiro drags it too, half of the bosses are reused and becomes boring. It doesn't have much replay ability, you will be playing the same way in every play through.

      @jooot_6850 2 роки тому +20

      @@yourewallsareveryconvenien8292 minibosses are reused, yes, but ER reused them too, so that’s kind of a moot point. The main bosses that get reused are pretty different from each other. For example, Shura Isshin and Sword Saint Isshin feel completely different.
      I think that ER really starts to slow down once you get to Morgott: your build is pretty much completed and any more levels won’t net you too much, so there’s no reason to explore more of the map. And the next few areas are pretty boring. Mountaintop of the Giants is very pretty but there’s not much there besides a hero’s grave and of course the Fire Giant. Crumbling Farum Azula is a much better map with more to see but the 5 endgame boss quadruple whammy is wayy too concentrated. It’s just boss after boss with nothing to do in between. Would’ve been much better if they were spread a bit more evenly, but I’d have no idea how FromSoft would do that given the same routing as the normal game.
      It’s true that Sekiro is less replayable, but I think that first play through is just so much more polished it makes up for it.
      To be completely fair I’ve only done one play through of ER, maybe now that I can beeline to the bosses and minibosses that actually matter I’ll have more fun with it.

      To be fair, Margit stomps EVERYONE. I've beaten every souls game before, and the experience I previously had didn't help me nearly as much as I thought it would. Why? Because Margit read me. Every time I distanced myself, I knew he was waiting for me to heal so he could either throw a knife or lunge at me. When he did a fast chain of attacks, there was a high chance of him following up with slow attacks right after, just to throw me off. Often he would do some big attack, wait for me to overcommit, and then use his little dagger to take a little bit of my health. If I overcommited even harder, he would leap away and throw the dagger at me.
      There are very few Souls bosses like this. Usually they have set patterns to their attacks that YOU have to adapt to, they dictate the rythm of the fight and you follow. In Elden Ring I actually felt like I was fighting an opponent that knew what they were going against, making the fight much more immersive imo.
      Margit also teaches an important lesson to DS veterans: play this like a dark souls game and you'll be beaten to hell and back. Use the game's unique mechanics, bitch.

    • @scorpiowarrior7841

      I actually disagree and think Fromsoft have made quite large strides in quests since DS1. in DS1, quests have *MULTIPLE* points of failure that aren't obvious to the player and then there's one in particular that LITERALLY makes firelink shrine useless for half the bloody game. In addition, quest progression wasn't as cut and clear as it in elden ring and I honestly found DS1's quests to be a massive hassel, espically with things like how Siegeward's quest plays out, which made them a very frustrating mess to follow and also a mess if you wanted to avoid certain outcomes (see firelink above...God damn it Lautrec). In Elden ring, quests are more sidelined, but to me more thought out with more clear instructions and ideas that are communicated a bit better to the player then other titles. Even DS3 is a little guilty of hard to follow questlines, prime examples being irnia's and The Lord of Hollows questline, including Anri's. I also think Elden ring did a good job of removing a lot of the less obvious points of failure that lead to extreme frustration in older titles, overall I think from made huge leaps with questlines in Elden ring. There's still improvements to be made (like Millicent I think is a poorly designed quest because her locations are very easy to miss) but a lot of them felt natural to me.

      Personally I don't care about reused bosses but what I absolutely hate is how the game often throws multiple bosses at the same time in a room in a lazy attempt to be more challenging, and in many instances that's just annoying and hardly balanced. Player already fought a Chrystallian? Let em fight 2 at once. And then next time 3 with scarlet rot. And some areas have like 20 exploding enemies in one spot, completely ignoring that the combat system isn't from Dynasty Warriors.
      So basically Elden Ring's worst parts are what's wrong with Dark Souls 2. But overall it's still insanely good.

    5:10 I will also say to this, from both a Gamer and a Game Developer perspective, I see this as something that is completely fine because it massively sped up the completion of Elden Ring by allowing them to forgo remaking literally every asset, it isn't done in a disruptive way that takes away from the experience, and it even allows us to see some of their Cut Content actually fleshed out and used in a game which I fucking love.

    • @TheLegless101
      @TheLegless101 Рік тому +11

      Exactly, any efficient developer is going to re-use assets. This is just them saving time and money which allows them to make more games faster and with bigger budgets, and considering every souls like they've released since 2011 has been GOTY or a GOTY contender you would think people would applaud their efficiency while still being able to make quality content.
      I've got like 200+ hours in DS3 and I didn't even notice any re-used assets or animations in Edlen Ring, except the Dog Sword fight, which was a positive because it's obviously a big nod to Sif from DS1.
      IMO I feel like the gaming industry just got very salty over Pokemon re-using assets to an absurd degree with little to no new content that every time they hear "re-used assets" they are immediately angry.

      totally agree! Imagine of they tried to do Tears of the kingdom in a totally new map instead of expanding on the same world from breath of the wild. It would not be nearly as good. Reusing assets is a great way to experiment and improve gameplay IMHO

    • @TheLegless101
      @TheLegless101 Рік тому

      @@WrathofFenrir99 I didn't say it was deep or brilliant it's just efficient. Re-using bosses is pretty standard for open-world games. The only boss IMO that was used a bit too much was the Godskin duo, most of the other bosses that are repeated have counterparts that can be found in the open world (not behind a fog wall).
      I mean I don't really play ubisoft games, not because I don't like them, I just never really got around to it, so I can't say much on them, but simply re-using bosses isn't bad. There's also 112 unique bosses out of the 151 in Elden ring, so I don't think you see the same boss 5 times in the game except if you count each encounter with the individual Godkin Duo and the Duo together.

      The fact that people complain when THE ENTIRE SOULS SERIES, including DS 2(to a lessar extent because 2 has a lot of unquie movesets) 3 reuse a lot of the exact same move sets (greatswords are the most obvious example to me) and point to ELDEN RING as an "asset flip" for it is mind boggling. It's less of a reuse and more like giving the player what they'd expect. Because the same greatsword moveset is used in DS1 and 3, it creates an expectation for what the weapon class feels like. And I don't recall people saying the same thing about DS3 which did much the same with movesets.

      Fr. I actually really strongly disagree that the game needs a quest journal, I think that would almost completely take away from what makes the Souls/Elden Ring quests special, but I completely agree that there should be more things like that where quests could be reasonably expected to be continued without having to look them up...
      Example for me is when White Mask Varre left the message at The First Step that said he was at the Church to the west of such-and-such ruins. Alot of quests just leave you completely open-ended with no guidance whatsoever, and unless you look them up its just up to you to happen to stumble upon whatever area/item/whatever in the correct order needed to continue the quest. Would be nice if most quests gave more clear ideas of what you would need to do if you wanted to continue that questline specifically.
      Or, possibly a similar system to the message system where there's an in-game system that would allow other players to share hints with you possibly. That would feel more organic than looking something up in a wiki at least

That is why there is a pop-up when your horse dies and you have additional step for reviving your horned mount. I think most if not all of the bosses were designed to fight you up close. This creates what is traditionally called A Shared Cultural Moments. Basically, when everyone gathers around a specific topic and exchange knowledge and ideas about it. Some will depend on it to get through the culture moment but then in future discussions of the topic we come with a much more complete knowledge and often times still have stories of our own to add to the adventure.
      The problem is that this concept of a shared cultural moments flies over some folks head. They think they have to beat the game on their own not realizing that From wants you talk to others and learn from others. They try to approximate the watercooler in the form of the player messages and ghosts. Folks who are stuck need to realize it is ok to use all the tools and to use the guidance of others as we are all culturally on this adventure and it shouldn't diminish the experience because you still have to slay that dragon yourself. The number of runes you get for defeating enemies rarely seems like it is equivalent to the difficulty of the enemy themselves. Which means that you need to grind a lot while at the same time making enemies far to difficult to actually grind on. The gameplay itself is fun, the npcs are great (even if I wish you got more casual interactions with them, come on let me have Melina as an actual traveling companion) and I enjoy the story, but I so often feel under leveled for where I am

I came into Elden Ring knowing I was gonna get my ass handed to me. I didn't go online to bitch about it. I went online to look up tips on how to "git gud". 20-ish hours later I'm having a blast! Personally Elden Ring has become my new favorite game of all time, it not only met my expectations, it exceeded them in almost every way. It isn't a perfect game like with the absence of a quest log which I do think would be helpful for the side quests or as an optional feature, but the few faults it does have I feel are just outweighed by everything it does right. odd thing about quest logs is that many people don't really like them.
    >spam talk at npc
    >accept quest
    >go into questlog
    >log tells you to kill boss X in zone Y at area Z
    >do the thing
    >win
    in games with quest logs i tend to just not give a shit about what the npc has to say, since i'll just get better info in the log.
    in elden ring i actually have to listen to what an npc says, as if im actually talkin to the npc.
    maybe instead of a quest log that just tells you where to go, you can have a journal so you can read the last thing Ranni said to you while you were imagining holding hands with her.

    I like the horse mount decision. You can equip it to your regular equip slots instead of the pouch to use it like (presumably) your ESTUS flask. Personally I put my crimson/cerulean gamer tears in my pouch since directional inputs while chuggin' aren't super consequential. The horse ring then becomes a choice for the player- do you add it to quick equips, put it on your pouch, or leave it in your inventory like some kind of savage? Plus this is a nifty and immersive way to customize your controls, since consumable equips are essentially an option screen to place them on various hotkeys.

Now its basically forcing you to Google where they are which is a bad game design. Even just a dialogue log can solve this.

    My main issue with the ER quests weren't that there wasn't a quest log, since i always had like a little notebook that i wrote all the stuff in i had to remember. This was one of my favorite parts about it, and it was really emersive. What isn't emersive is having to look up online where to go next to progress a quest line cause the npcs just keep disappearing without telling you where to find them next, and the next time you see them they are dead cause you didn't give them their rowa rainsins in time or some sh*t like that. Idk just add some cheesy dialogue like "i will be waiting at this exact location btw but dont kill that dude first before you visit me"

      Try using something where you can type the seemingly important stuff NPC's say, most quests can be followed by just hearing the dialogue and going to the place they said or you just finding them along the way when exploring.
      NPC's in the souls series talk directly to the character not the player that's why they usually don't tell you where they are going or what they are doing becouse you have your things to do and they their own, even with that said it would be really nice to have a ingame notebook to write stuff instead of having to use a physical notebook or a digital one, they already added a system to mark on the map NPC's that you talked to so they could do it at some point.

    Holy shit this review was needed.
    I do agree that the biggest flaws are the controls, which are a bit overloaded and would’ve been much better if there was more freedom to customize button input. There have been multiple times when I just wished “damn I wish I could’ve set my sprint and jump button separately” and other thoughts, and I found it kind of frustrating when I didn’t have that option.
    The difficulty spike after the… ‘first half’ of the game (Leyndell) could have been toned down just a little bit, or maybe gave players better ways to deal with taking damage. I think the devs wanted the player to actually use all the game mechanics (throwing consumables, stealth mechanics, status affects, etc) and their focus in the later areas to force them to ‘engage fully’ with the gameplay, but what I think this actually does is discourage build variety, which is pretty exhausting, to be honest.
    And also, I think if we had a ‘dialogue journal’ to record what the NPCs said, that would have made the side quests much more enjoyable, considering this is a vast open world game and lots of people don’t have photographic memory to remember what a ‘friendly dude dressed in armor’ said to them 12 hours prior when the entire game is about killing ‘dudes dressed in armor’
    And IF ONLY the other game devs had explained these criticisms in a clearer way other than throwing fancy game developing terms in everyone’s faces, I think they wouldn’t have faced a lot of backlash.
    Elden Ring is still 10/10 though. Thank you so much for making this much needed review. You earned a subscriber.

    I think this video raises an interesting topic of discussion. You mention that new players will go online and have their experience tainted by others complaining about the game and I find this usually happens to me, i’ll keep up with videos or threads about games i’m invested in and I’ve found it tarnishes my playthrough experience because i’ll have perspectives and information about the game that I wouldn’t have had prior. I have deliberately avoided all content, spoilers, videos, guides etc. for elden ring, and I have to say it is one of the most refreshing, exhilarating games I have played because I’m going in completely blind. I think hype trains and the rumour mill for games is so vast that it can genuinely erase any opportunity to truly experience a game as it’s intended. I can understand wanting help if a game has you stumped, but there’s so much that can sully how you enjoy a game, especially when playing it for the first time. What are your thoughts on how content on a trending game affects a player’s views/experience?

      I take this approach with most video games. If I see something I might be interested in I mostly ignore everything other than trailers and gameplay reveals. in my experience going into a game blind with no prior knowledge or opinions lets you enjoy it a lot more for what it is rather than what you or other people WANT it to be. Since doing this I rarely regret purchases. The game that opened my eyes to this was Outer Wilds. Saw it on gamepass, had no idea what it was, played it and it become my favorite game of all time. If I were to watch anything about that game I would have been robbed of the full experience because it's designed around your own curiosity, everything is a spoiler.

    The end game content could probably do with a bit of rebalancing but the softcaps for leveling are much higher in this game to the point where I do think the devs intended on you leveling your vigor up to 60 by the endgame as that's when the softcap starts

    The difficulty of Elden Ring made completing it meaningful. I can legitimately see why more casual gamers cannot learn it. Its unforgiving and relentless but it can be learned and conquered with effort, skill, and thinking. Some bosses might even require changing your entire favorite build. I have never seen a game not explain anything and pull it off as a benefit. It encourages players to explore the open world and grow from a tiny nooblet naked wretch into a fully armored magic infused duel greatsword wielding master.

    I got so used to the claw grips that I didn't realize how stupid it was that I even had to do the things you mentioned at 7:00. I can do it, and it doesn't interrupt combat for me, but looking back it definitely doesn't seem like good controller design. It can be argued that when you are trying to do something like riding your horse or drink a heal, you should find a safe time in battle to preform that task anyway, and the alternative is to scroll through the item bar (the item bar is SO much worse), but if the horse or heals were an ability rather than a conventional item that would probably be better.

    elden ring is my first ever from software game ive ever played and i absolutely loved every ounce of enjoyment i got out of it, there were only a couple of bosses that i got fed up with and made me want to stop (im looking at you godskin duo) but other than that i only broke one controller 10/10 would play for another 150 hrs
