The thing that really frustrates me is when a 50GB single player game gets a 60GB update. If suddenly the game content was doubled, that would be cool, it's never that though. Most of the time it's all DLC, or micro transaction related. They want me to have immediate access to whatever I decide to buy as soon as I decide to buy it, wether I decide to buy it, or not.
This more so a multiplayer thing, its so your client can render all that garbage other players bought (and hopefully encourage you to buy it too). Patches aren't the problem, the problem is the Korean(freemium) and gacha models western publishers started to force into the market back in the 2000's. Its low investment, high returns all you need to do is hook a few whales.
This is quality. It’s like entertaining investigative journalism. Also, to add to the “stealing”. By adding gigs upon gigs of updates they are also stealing hard drive space. I’m about to drop a chunk of money on a ps5 hard drive upgrade and updates are killing me.
I remember many years ago buying a physical copy of Splinter Cell: Conviction. At the time my internet connection was horrible. I specifically wanted the game on disc so I wouldn't have to wait days just to play it. Got home, popped the CD in, expecting to just install it and play it. Oh boy was I wrong. Had to download uPlay and set up a uPlay account, then the game had a 12GB patch and I was entirely incapable of playing the game until that patch was done downloading. A game that I bought on a disc was kept from me for an entire day. It's even worse with consoles, too. Back in the day one of the best things about a console was you could rent or buy a game, go home and just frickin play it. Now if you want to play a game on disc, you _HAVE_ to install it to your console. You may as well skip the disc all together and just buy the game as a digital download. It still takes the same amount of time. There was also another instance where I bought Assassin's Creed II on disc. I was fully prepared to have to patch this game so I wasn't worried about that. However, this game had that dumb "always online" requirement. My connection was so bad that it would often cut out and then I'd have no internet access for minutes or hours at a time. I remember playing through a good 2-3 hours of it, saved and then quit. When I went to resume the game, I had to start it completely over because the game didn't actually save, because I had no connection to the internet at the time I tried to save. uPlay was using cloud saves, and if it lost connection, well fuck you. I had to crack a game I paid for just to be able to play it normally.
Not to mention the fact that if you're using an SSD, having to constantly delete old games to make room for new ones due to these enormous file sizes will eventually damage the drive.
@@Zalkryn I didn’t even think of that. Many people are capped on how much they can download with their ISP. I think this is a bigger problem than we realize and we just kind of accept it. Not that we have much of a choice.
Growing up playing games in the 80's and 90's and seeing how games are now, has made me shake my head. Sure, there were plenty of bad games back then. But the game you bought was the finished product. Zelda was done and worked as intended, Metroids controls worked and the game didn't randomly crash because the developers thought that they could release a day one patch. Day one patches are the most despicable and horrible practice outside of MTX/DLC. Every single game comes with a day one patch nowadays. I just want a game that is finished and works as intended on day one.
There's also several times more systems running that the user may not be aware of that have the possibilty to cause issues. There's also possibly hundreds of developers, artists, etc working on one project, as opposed to a handful. Especially with open worlds, it takes is one person modifying or removing an asset they believed wasn't being used to cause a crash and no one notice because it takes place in a cave out by the edge of a map.
The problem is, unlike the olden times when people had only one game system so the game can be optimized for that system, people have different hardwares today and you won't expect it to run perfectly for everybody. It's the same reason why iPads and iPhones can run the same android games smoother with better performances because apple forces the game developers to optimize their game for their platform while androids have vastly different hardwares that it's hard to optimize the game to suit everybody
@@raypua9957 Well you can always just have a written list on the minimum specs for pc and optimize it for console specific games. Just like how some theme park rides have a minimum height that prevents you from playing it in the first place since you don't have the minimum requirements to do so.
There has always been multiple systems. The trouble comes from the dev's being put on short rations of time, money, and staff but expected to meet the lofty dreams of the press and to beat the competition to the masses bank accounts. Sometimes a mega producer company assumes that with patching they can cut costs in dev time by nuking testing. The purchasing consumer is now today's testing department.
It's sad that shit like sonic 06 was criticized back then but now it's become common, even more broken and people apologize for it. Cyberpunk has even less redeeming qualities than 06.
Glad someone is talking about this. Gaming "journalists" dont ever touch these subjects. They should, but they are obviously all dependent on game codes, travels paid by publishing companies, etc. so they are completely biased (kind of.. well.. corrupt essentially). So I doubt the IGNs and Gamespots and whatnots would ever do such an in depth piece as this. Good job!
99% of gaming "journalists" are nothing more than shills for the companies. They don't dare write the truth because (as you wrote) they'd risk losing their "privilege" to get copies of game pre-release for their reviews. This is how the game industry works. Until gamers (consumers) stop pre-ordering and wait for at least one month before buying game...nothing will change. Why would the industry change when shady practices continue to offer the biggest rewards. Why would journalists give real opinions when it's clear MOST gamers are only looking for positive affirmation that "this game is 9/10" instead of "buyer beware". At this point, gamers only have themselves to blame if they get hoodwinked. Cyberpunk should have been the last straw to open their eyes to how the industry works.
100% agreed. Remember those days when you bought a game, took it home, and played it? That was it, no changes, no tweaks, no constant meddling from the developer's side. We the gamers are encouraging this by continuing to buy into it with every game.
Yeah. Just maybe googling for patches at some point and looking if there is some big bux fixes etc. available. I actually like to play broken games to an extent. Or at least have the ability to do so and play without patches and fixes.
I'm not encouraging this shit. I stopped buying games from such developers once i saw where the journey was going to. I reject Always-On, i reject Denuvo, i reject games who's music gets patched a few years later, i reject early Alpha, i reject games from developers / publishers who actively FIGHT the modding community Aaaand i reject P2W Online Games who rely on Lootbox money only.
I remember buying many consoles games that sounded awesome to play but when I tried playing them they would be bugged out to I could not continue the game. I bought it, could not return it because I opened it and the retail stored had no interest if a game was buggy. Yes the days where games would never be fixed to be played at all.
This happened with 2k too and it infuriated me. They added shot stick aiming (in addition to the legacy shot timing) to 2k21 and Mike Wang (lead gameplay dev) pitched it to the community as the solution to building in a skill gap. The aiming mechanic was really finicky, but once mastered, you could become a way better shooter than those using shot timing. I took the bait and spent a year becoming one such person who put in the time and effort to master the mechanic. Most players did not, including those who were complaining about no skill gap in the first place. Result was that they relentlessly bitched about it to Mike Wang. When they started advertising 2k22 they specifically stated shot aiming would remain. Few weeks later I buy it, only to spend the next couple hours frantically researching trying to enable it only to find out it was removed right before launch. Moreover, the 2k21 online servers aren’t even active even tho it’s only been a couple years. So not only did I lose my competitive advantage, I also lost my ability to use all my excellent player builds and in-game purchases that I spent untold hours and dollars on in online gameplay. All because I don’t keep buying their very slightly updated version year over year. I was so mad I haven’t played 2k since, including the 2k22 I was tricked into buying. Then I made a Twitter account specifically to tell Mike Wang how he is a loser with no vision or leadership abilities because that’s the only thing I could think of doing to cope.

It's so stupid that all these issues could be solved with just waiting and testing more and finally putting it in a public test server before finally adding it to a game. That way people can get a feel for the operator to see if their inclined to purchase
It's not that simple, yeah you could wait and test the game more, but games are so much bigger nowadays that even with paying thousands of people it will not be enough to test it. And those people cost money every month, the budget will run out. Just play simple games if you want no bugs or get the game a few weeks after release.
the problem is, it costs money to do testing, and thus companies want to limit it to just whats necessary. worse still, players are too diverse to be able to really fully test anything even in months of public tests; ive seen this in league of legends a few times where people do the whole test period saying a character is mediocre or weak, and then after maybe a week to a month of full live server gameplay, that character is realized to be completely overpowered as soon as some random pro figured out the ideal way to play them, and that knowledge spreads to everyone, meaning when the tests found that the character was either balanced or needed a slight buff, only for them to find out that the character actually needed heavy nerfs. point being testing is expensive and more often than not it doesnt even give you the information you need. plus the longer the character is visible but not playable the more hype for them you lose, and thats bad marketing
It is sweet you think game developers will pay people to test something when they have loads of game testers the people that brought the game they do it for free and when they find something that is broken or over powered just fix it quietly in another update and let the paying customers find another bug for free then rise and repeat that is how it works now. And the real reason game testers are a thing of the past is because game companies never liked paying them a living wage so they all gave up and no one wanted to do it plus the hours they put in for very little pay. Plus the customers do it for them so they don't need testers. People complained about it that it is a buggy mess but they still keep play it and buy the next game again next year so no incentive to change if people keep handing them money to test the game for them.
I definitely believe patches are important, as mistakes need fixing sometimes, and balance patches have a place too, it would suck if you brought a multiplayer game and one character was way too powerful and couldn’t be beaten. I really hate the way the current industry is using them as a crutch though, I think it’s honestly one of the reasons why I’m yet to get into modern gaming, if I had a 100gb patch I would need to buy another hard drive and leave my computer on for several days straight with no interruptions, and I just couldn’t work with that.
@@dadrising6464 oh yes because its that easy to just release a perfect game. remember devs have their own skill level, they cant just blindly balance the game for casuals and pros alike when their skill level is in between both. a character that felt really weak to them might just utterly dominate in pro play, or be an absolute noob crusher in low level. that doesnt mean the character shouldnt have been added, just that the devs over/underestimated what players would reliably be able to do with their kit.
@@auqanova or... they could just finish the damn game. They're not pros? There's a thing called beta tester, you could hire pros to test your game and give their opinion on stuff. If after all that it still sucks, your problem.
your channel is going to skyrocket soon enough, thank you for all this amazing content. i binge watched your whole channel 2 weeks ago and now im just eagerly waiting for new uploads
I just found it. Because I have often thought of this subject and it appears in my feed. For a Channel to have 1.2k comments with 20k subs is very unusual btw. It’s a crazy high level of interaction. 👍🏻
This is why I've always liked FFXIV's approach to adding in new classes, the game isn't balanced around how much damage or healing or whatever on the individual as much as it is on knowing the content, and maintaining maximum uptime, meaning that your party's dps as a whole is important, and doing mechanics makes sure no one dies losing out on that DPS. This means essentially EVERYTHING is viable, at the highest levels of play. It doesn't matter what class you're playing. And very rarely do they outright nerf for no reason, instead choosing to rework classes that have become inefficient or aren't where they should be. And making minor tweaks elsewhere to create a more happy medium.
This is what I always complain about when it comes to League of Legends, it's constantly new champions progressively becoming more and more overloaded with mechanics so that one skill is not just a dash, but a dash that roots, slows and turns you invisible for 1.5 seconds. When you compare newer champions to older champions it becomes obvious how power creep grew over time. The game is so different now to how it was even only a couple years ago. Edit: It is the same with items having several effects and many more items having active skills that are loaded with damage and utility. The items have changed so drastically.
right? he took melee as an example but its still a mess in many places like certain glitches having to be banned from usage i would rather have it be patched out
This is why I’ve known since I was a kid, when Halo and all that was taking over, there was something inherently wrong with online gaming. It’s been a path to stripping players of their freedom since day one.
I definitely understand and mostly agree with the frustration of patches potentially removing your favorite play style, but I don't think the solution is to just not have patches anymore. More playtesting is definitely going to help solve some issues, but there are always going to be unforseen consequences to any content you want to add as a developer. I can't believe I'm actually going to use them as a positive example here, but Dead by Daylight is actually pretty good with how they do balance changes. Whenever they release a new character, they have a Player Test Build to let the community try things out and essentially assist the devs in playtesting the game (or realistically playtesting the game for them) so they can get more and better data. Additionally, when they make changes to killers (survivors are all just reskins) they usually either make smaller nerfs or offer a buff elsewhere in that killer's kit. This does rarely lead to killers losing legitimate play styles, like how Ninja Deathslinger isn't a thing anymore, but more often than not the changes are at least attempting to let people play how they want without that way being overpowered. Of course, since DbD is asymmetrical, balancing is a nightmare, and with the MMR system everybody is using the same 8 perks because they're the strongest, and it feels like creative expression in the game is dead because why be creative when you can win instead, but I did say I can't believe I'm using them as a positive lol
Holy shit. This is so well made. I looked at the view count expecting it to be in the millions.. And so disappointed to see how little attention it's getting. This is such an important message to the gaming community, it's something consumers should be thinking about. I hope this channel starts taking off. The gaming community needs more channels like this to wake gamers up to the b.s. going on in the industry..
Dude, this video opened my eyes. THANK YOU for making it. I'm going to be more cautious when buying add-ons and DLC, because, well, we know they're not going to stop being predators if it's making them money. Fantastic vid dude. I'm waitin for you to blow up with millions of viewers any day now.
I honestly can't belive how blind I've become to this, and now that im aware of it im pissed lol. It really is just standard practice nowadays. Even games that aren't even that old in retrospect like BO1, MW, etc. Rarely had balancing updates. Everything was just the way it was. Sure there would be exploits/bugs that were patched, but the core game stayed virtually the same. I miss those days... You would get on to see a new update and actually be excited because it usually meant new stuff was being added to the game. Not just a useless 45gb update changing everything.
Add ons were also downloaded AFTER purchase at one point but now they rob you of your HD space after an "update" and sell you the access key which consists of a few MBs in the store. With alot of games now they force their content onto your system and hold your space hostage until you pay to access it. Imagine buying a car with 4 doors but only the front doors will work. You go back to the dealer and they sell you passenger, rear seat access and give you a seperate key/fob to open them. That is what these a$$hats are doing and it should be illegal.
Ah yes the good old days, when everyone was using the same one gun, playing the same one map, using the same skills and perks, using the... wait a minute.
One of my favorite games to play right now is Battlefield 4. It started out a broken mess, but after a couple years of patching, brought it to be one of the most balanced shooters I've ever played. And it's very complex in terms of what items are available to you. To this day I'm still finding new ways to play this almost 10 year old shooter. With that said, your editing is far too good for a 29k sub channel. You deserve to be around 1mill with this production quality.
I've been saying for a long time that there's no longer a that sense of anticipation with games. Or at least not at all like it used to be when you'd get the game home and rush immediately to the console, carefully pluck the disc from the case and set it in the console to then boot it up, watch intro FMVs and jump right into the action without downloads ruining everything. Even _after_ purchase, any excitement you'd have to play is curtailed by updates for game or console. Even on single-player games, you're REQUIRED to follow through with these time-killing updates otherwise the console throws a fit and threatens to sign you out if you try to do anything before performing updates. Cheap, always online "live service" games, updates, constant bugs, complete games butchered to sell in chunks to make sure they eke out that $100 from you, always running the risk of arbitrarily having content/playability of the game you paid $100+ for, taken away when publishers feel like it, and terrible experiences from unavoidable PvP sweats/trolls/cheats. What a fucking nightmare modern gaming is.
@@tacticalteddy5556 "Pre-order" is just the thought or anticipation of ordering. The gaming industry has turned into the fools gold of entertainment mining.

What a emotional roller coaster right here! Came to watch expecting nothing, emotions went down when it felt if will be complaining about big patch sizes and how often they are, but then it hit right in the spot - nerfs and buffs, and DLC exploits! And on top of that - highly appreciated the high production value of the video you are adding to it - very well done.
What needs to happen is a version control system like git. Every tiny thing that changes from patch to patch should be revertable on the player's side. Some games kinda do this, with titles like zomboid keeping major game releases archived in the "betas" section on steam but overall you're just kinda screwed if the devs don't feel like paying that sort of attention. Another big issue is server support, since most modern multiplayer games don't let you host your own server (for literally no reason) you're stuck relying on the devs to support older versions. Or they could literally just *provide some degree of mod support.*
A change like that would make cheating uncontrollable though. Hackers would since play the patch that makes it the easiest to cheat. Additionally mod support would severely damage the integrity of the game because it makes it easier for cheaters to influence the game. I think that idea makes a lot of sense for PVE and single player games however.
@@AbstractTraitorHero you are right, a lot of games and their communities do this. However those games are usually games like Factorio or Minecraft, games that don't usually have a centrally endorsed esports scene or competitive multiplayer.
Great video! I only just discovered your channel and I’m loving it! But while I agree on your points about more buffs for balance, there is a potential problem to that: If you keep buffing everybody else to balance, eventually everybody becomes balanced, but you also lose a sense of identity This happened in world of warcraft, where by the time the 4th expansion rolled out, everybody was so buffed, all sense of class identity was lost, so they *had* to nerf things back during the next expansion. This is a HUGE oversimplification of what happened, but yeah: the point I’m trying to present is that there is a ceiling to buffing to balance.
Warframe's answer to this: Warframe releases and is either OP or weak and lame. If OP, leave as-is. If weak and lame... Wait a year or two, then *finally* buff them. If that is not enough... Wait a few more years, then release a total overhaul of the Warframe's ability kit.
Oh what's up you know what's crazy? You unironically crossed my mind while I put that edit together because I've seen your music taste and are probably one of the 5 people who even know the song.
This is exactly why I completely stopped playing competitive games in a serious way, stopped taking part in teams and tournaments. Companies unbalance everything that works, pushes new cosmetic BS and DLCs while never really fixing core issues within the game, it's just not worth the stress.
I'm glad you tackled this. Anytime I bring up the fact that I hate patches, people go ballistic on me. I like playing the game I paid for and having it stay that way. I don't like buying a game, then a series of "updates" transforming it into something completely different and unfun.
I can understand that for singleplayer and for unnecessary changes in multiplayer games but man would some competitive games suck if the early game exploits and poorly thought out characters were stuck in the game forever as they are
The Ascent is also guilty of this but they're not making money out of the patches. They have no new content. One day they dropped a patch, nerfed players equipment and abilities and said, "You had your fun!" (actual quote). And the game is a PvE game. They're taking away our fun in a game where you should be able to be as strong as you wanted to. And speaking of making money in competitive games, you're right on the money about that. League of Legends have done this for years. They make a new Champion, make it super strong during the first couple of months of release, grab those skins money from that new champ and then finally nerfing it... Before introducing a new Champion again. I think they're releasing 4-6 new Champions a year now since last year.
Jesus that's so insanely scuffed. Like bro it's PVE. it's not like people are complaining about the other players JFC. I don't touch LOL but I've heard from others they've been scummy with their updates and hero releases as well. Total bs.
borderlands 3 did that shit with some meta guns even though its 99.9 percent pve instead of buffing trash guns that needed it much more and thats why its the only game in the series ive never bought granted thats also cause the dialogue and character decision making is piss poor but thats beside the point
@@ironpulcinella3586 why would it be illegal tho? It's all voluntary, they're forcing no one to be gullible like that. If taking advantage of idiots was illegal the whole of only fans would be a crime lol
Outriders was worse. Alot of people couldn't legitimately play the fucking game and you know what they do first patch? Nerf the shit out of everything. Didn't even address the other issues that plague the game. Dropped that pile of shit immediately
Patches/Nerfs/Balancing are vital. People want more content which creates more complexity as you stated. Now Siege has like 60 operators. Things that weren’t OP with 20 operators become OP at 60. I think the only issue is if they are intentionally releasing things OP so people buy them knowing they will nerf them immediately. I’d like to think this doesn’t happen, but I’m sure it does some. I think in online games you have to accept your play style, op choices, etc. will have to change at some point. Might not always feel fun at first losing something you enjoyed or something you enjoyed change but ultimately it does keep the game from getting stale. Forces you to learn and try new things and find something else to enjoy if that thing has become problematic for the health of the game. I think that is a good thing for continued enjoyment. PS: Old House was still ass.
Bruhh just thought I watched a video of a massive creator with a million subs, just by the quality of this masterpiece alone. But just 68k?! *Give it time.*
Always with the high production value It's really a slippery slope this whole update/patching because it can really save a dumpster fire or make something fun into a joyless entertainment

Played Wow since vanilla and League since launch. (Not torturing myself with them for a few years now thankfully.) But it always seemed that balancing something wasn't a huge concern, not after a relative balance was achieved. It always seemed like there was a rotating wheel of bs, nerf this and buff that, then nerf that and buff this. It got to the point where I reckoned it was only to keep it fresh. Once I was with the drooling masses that got hard off hearing patch notes, I knew that was the real reason. We were all just Pavlov's Dog.
They removed the house? Christ. One of me and my mates' best plays was on there rescuing a hostage. Everything they change about the game revolves around balancing the "pro" scene (impossible) instead of having fun in difficult situations.
Next level editing right here It was super visually engaging, the pacing was good and everything flows nicely to the next video. Really impressive great work
Sheee*it.....these punks rob you of your HD space with "updates" and sell you the key to access that stolen space. There has to be some kind of legal recourse for this.
A big thing about Melee that no one talks about is that it did have a balance patch. The pal version made characters like fox and Marth a bit weaker, but no one plays it anymore. Partially because America has the biggest player base, but mainly because people want to use the stronger versions of those characters.
Shoot! Whenever new “operators” or “legends” or “whatever” are introduced. It always frustrates me that they are overpowered and need nerfed. I always just accepted that they would be needed in a few weeks, it never occurred to me that the companies could be making them op on purpose with the plan of nerfing them later as a marketing strategy. People who wouldn’t buy the balanced version would buy the op one….
From my experience with Overwatch I always thought they started out OP to balance out players not knowing how to use them. This makes them easier to learn, and learning a new character is hard in Overwatch. There's probably a mix of reasons for starting out characters OP with nerfs planned. An interview with an ex-employee would be interesting.
@@003Jetfire overwatch at least doesnt make you pay for the characters so it feels less scummy, tho they might want you to buy skins for them which is kinda the same but to a lesser extent

Its on purpose. They release a new badass character make it OP, and let people talk about how good it is until a lot of people have spent real money to obtain it. Then nerf it, and then repeat all of that with guns/characters

4:48 I disagree on that being an issue. Expecially if the exploit is due to a bug. The alternative is power-creep. There is a saying that "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." ... Ultimately, thoguh, it depends on how much the developers truely care about the community, and how much creative agency the corporate side allows those developers to have.

It's shit like this why I recommend everyone wait a year after a game or it's DLC has come out before spending any money, since this tumor exists partially because we keep sticking our heads in the proverbial nuclear waste. If we all stop buying games day 1, they can't just toss a patch out of nowhere that completely invalidates what we originally bought, or get caught off guard by a bloated patch. It would also force companies to build back their reputations by making actually good games to entice customers.
You make a lot of valid points and I do miss games that come out as is. However, there are many fighters that are released with big mistakes that do need adjusting. I wish there was like a 1 patch rule or something. Unfortunately as you said, because they know they can patch it up they don't bother balancing initially anymore.
Just found this channel an hour ago, and I can't stop smiling this entire time - the videos are just so fun, cozy, and also informative! Liked, subbed, and turned on notifications because I legit want to see what you do next. Good luck! :D
haha never been called "cozy" before but I vibe to it. I'm here to just make fun content about the good ol days. Seriously, thanks for going to all those lengths I know it seems small but means the world to a new creator like me.
When Borderlands 3 launched I loved to farm the right gear to melt bosses in seconds if I wanted to. I played in singleplayer after all. Problem is, the second I got the gear I wanted, gearbox patched my character and his gear so baldy that he never felt the way that made me pick him in the first place. And this process happend multiple times. It felt like the time I put into this game was worthless all of a sudden. This ruined the game for me big time.
Lol bl3 came to my mind too while watching this vid. It felt like they were trying to keep the game alive by nerfing and buffing stuff constantly to force people to farm anew and you never knew which guns to keep cause what would be nerfed or buffed next? And with all that you didnt even have enough space to keep all the guns the game had to offer so you were forced to sell the worthless ones and then suddenly they became amazing and the previous ones were trash to the point i got tired of it all.
I was browsing YT once and I saw a vid of one Russian Pay-Day 2 YTber, who told one interesting story. That game is still alive just because of DLCs and dedicated playerbase. Devs added medieval-themed DLC once, but sales went horrible, because who would want to buy a crossbow to shoot once in 4 seconds while you can get a normal gun that has a decent amount of damage and fire rate? So the devs just turned crossbow's damage up to a point where it could almost one-tap strongest enemies in the game. After that, when huge amount of people bought it, they nerfed it immediately lol.
I was just there 4 days ago grabbing takeout from sushi ichiban and jfc the first thing I do getting out of my car is step on a flattened needle. shit's fucked.
It's pretty clear to me there that you approached this from a R6Siege/Counter Strike perspective and tried to apply this to broader gaming because you assumed it works similarily there... but I'm afraid that is not an issue that broadly applies to gaming as a whole. Just a small section of it, and in some games patches/tuning are something actively anticipated by players. Take World of Warcraft, for example. It's a game that has both PvE and PvP in it, and you can see players constantly asking for fine-tuning from the developers because a balanced experience is quite clearly what they want. It is not used as a sort of predatory monetisation scheme (it's a subscription-based MMORPG and the cash shop does not shower you in player power or provide character unlocks), and the approach of "buff everyone to the level of highest performer instead of nerfing the outliers" doesn't always work out because doing so without exceptions would have impacted the difficulty of PvE encounters by making them way too easy when everyone's power levels are astronomically high. The philosophy there is also that you should be able to create a character and stick to it, which would've been made impossible if we agreed that balance patches are bad even if it leaves some of the classes incapable of being even remotely competitive. Your points might be sound for Siege or Counter Strike where there doesn't seem to be an attachment to the characters/guns you're playing (correct me if I'm wrong), but there are games where no longer bringing in patches would've been their swift deaths and frequent tuning patches are not a predatory practice. But still, even if I cannot agree with you putting something like World of Warcraft in the video, I have to admit it's very well made! You speak clearly, your arguments are valid, and the editing is brilliant. Still gave this an upvote and hoping to see more content from you :o
Except they still nerfed the shit out of everything. Early paladins was fast, aggressive, and visceral. Now it's walking around and barely aiming because of how much big the hitboxes are
Your videos are high in effort and I came here to compliment on this dying breed. UA-cam doesn't reward high effort creation, the algorithm has "upload on constant basis" as a high weight variable to give it exposure. It's very unfortunate, but I subscribed and activated the bell to help as I know likely won't expose your content to me on next video in the home screen. Really hate it that YT basically forces you to change your style to emphasize quantity, it makes finding channels like this a rarity. How many hours you put into editing a video like this and what's your tool of Choice for editing? Thanks, have a good one.
Yes! could not have said it better 🙏🏼 we need to validate this type of content by proving to the algorithm that this is what we want. Now we just have to figure out how to balance out the amount of likes and subs that young children with mobile devices just freely give out without any idea how it effects the platform itself 😆
Seriously thank you man. I've actually been studying YT for two years along side some larger creators who do this full time and it's a bit disappointing to see it be that way. The only thing left to do is viewer research and create the best title and thumbnail you can make. Thanks so much for the positive engagement, and I wish the best of luck to your successful channel as well!
@@ManleyReviews Thanks man, but I honestly given up. My videos were high in research, testing and educational effort, not really what the platform favors to prevail. Your videos hit the spot though, they are entertaining and informative, that is the best of both worlds-- your production value is also greater than most large channels with dedicated editors and staff.
assuming developers know what's best for players is to assume they are the best players. I have never in my life heard of a game where one of the devs is even upper percentile. I have had so many great games destroyed by devs who don't know how to play their own game.
it's ridiculous. I took a three month break from the game when I was on the road and came back to something almost unrecognizable. I have hope for the game, but jesus h dicks it's annoying to see what they've done with it over the years.
In terms of siege. The biggest reason I stopped playing is due to the “patches” being based off Pro players and not the causal player like me. I use to have a lot of fun playing the game but now there isn’t anything fun unless I’m “trying to go pro.”

Yeah, I wish games would stop acting like I have unlimited hard drive space, and optimize their content a little more.
Exactly, HDD space and also uses up your data.
@@Zalkryn I didn’t even think of that. Many people are capped on how much they can download with their ISP. I think this is a bigger problem than we realize and we just kind of accept it. Not that we have much of a choice.
remember when the most impressive stuff used to be 4 MB?
(as in, the ROM image was 4 MB, not the size itself being impressive)
Gaming journalists don't even know how to play games.
Well I'd argue patches are mostly good in either single player games (such as Hollow Knight/Witcher 3) or fighting games (Guilty Gear, Tekken, KOF).
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 the modding community aka hackers lmao

We need 100 gabazillion operators. All those operators will be unique. How? I dont know.
It's not that simple, yeah you could wait and test the game more, but games are so much bigger nowadays that even with paying thousands of people it will not be enough to test it. And those people cost money every month, the budget will run out. Just play simple games if you want no bugs or get the game a few weeks after release.
the problem is, it costs money to do testing, and thus companies want to limit it to just whats necessary. worse still, players are too diverse to be able to really fully test anything even in months of public tests;
ive seen this in league of legends a few times where people do the whole test period saying a character is mediocre or weak, and then after maybe a week to a month of full live server gameplay, that character is realized to be completely overpowered as soon as some random pro figured out the ideal way to play them, and that knowledge spreads to everyone, meaning when the tests found that the character was either balanced or needed a slight buff, only for them to find out that the character actually needed heavy nerfs.
point being testing is expensive and more often than not it doesnt even give you the information you need. plus the longer the character is visible but not playable the more hype for them you lose, and thats bad marketing
@@kissaninja9700 Just make them all different genders and races.
Maybe said op char shouldnt be in the game to begin with.

That's how they make their money. It's lame

Fantastic vid dude. I'm waitin for you to blow up with millions of viewers any day now.
Greatest guy to pop up on my UA-cam this year.
Being balanced isnt what made BF4 fun. It was that patches focussed on stability & content instead of game balance
@@MLMariss this is the way.

Great video! I only just discovered your channel and I’m loving it! But while I agree on your points about more buffs for balance, there is a potential problem to that:
If you keep buffing everybody else to balance, eventually everybody becomes balanced, but you also lose a sense of identity
This happened in world of warcraft, where by the time the 4th expansion rolled out, everybody was so buffed, all sense of class identity was lost, so they *had* to nerf things back during the next expansion. This is a HUGE oversimplification of what happened, but yeah: the point I’m trying to present is that there is a ceiling to buffing to balance.
Warframe's answer to this:
Warframe releases and is either OP or weak and lame.
If OP, leave as-is.
If weak and lame... Wait a year or two, then *finally* buff them. If that is not enough... Wait a few more years, then release a total overhaul of the Warframe's ability kit.
2:53 goddamn this shit killed me, fuckin dope video king. Also, COULDNT AGREE MORE.
Oh what's up you know what's crazy? You unironically crossed my mind while I put that edit together because I've seen your music taste and are probably one of the 5 people who even know the song.
Bro if your content keeps being this funny and at the same time very informative, you'll get to 1M in no time. Keep it up
This is exactly why I completely stopped playing competitive games in a serious way, stopped taking part in teams and tournaments.
I can understand that for singleplayer and for unnecessary changes in multiplayer games but man would some competitive games suck if the early game exploits and poorly thought out characters were stuck in the game forever as they are
I'm not seeing anyone mention that smooth as hell pen flip toss at 3:25.
@@ManleyReviews don't you think it's kinda illegal what LoL does?
Because LoL is not the only one that does this
@@ironpulcinella3586 why would it be illegal tho?

Same! And I’m on YT since 2010
Played Wow since vanilla and League since launch.

Yeah, and even as a casual gamer I've already been a victim of this :/
A big thing about Melee that no one talks about is that it did have a balance patch. The pal version made characters like fox and Marth a bit weaker, but no one plays it anymore. Partially because America has the biggest player base, but mainly because people want to use the stronger versions of those characters.
Came here to comment this, there's 3 different versions of the game off the top of my head
@@aceskeletonne7446 Of course! Overwatch is pay to (have a chance to) look badass, whereas the video is more discussing pay to win games.
@@aceskeletonne7446 if skins arw only cosmetic i dont care, but pay for a character is another thing, they can had cut him from the original game just to make you pay extra.
Its on purpose. They release a new badass character make it OP, and let people talk about how good it is until a lot of people have spent real money to obtain it. Then nerf it, and then repeat all of that with guns/characters
Your videos are the embodiment of everything about this industry that's been pissing me off! Nobody's talking about this stuff and I don't get it! So thanks man!

4:48 I disagree on that being an issue. Expecially if the exploit is due to a bug. The alternative is power-creep. There is a saying that "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game."
...
Ultimately, thoguh, it depends on how much the developers truely care about the community, and how much creative agency the corporate side allows those developers to have.

Your right, patches used to be the result of players blatantly cheating or rampant exploitation of a glitch, but since all the pay to win garbage ass developers came along it's usually just done just to boost in game purchases . I wont touch free to play games like fortnite . I know people who spend more on that nonsense in a month than there console costed .
Or in my case rampant exploitation of a dozen glitches in a world pvp zone.
Just the title alone had me realizing exactly what you meant and I am ashamed I needed you to point it out to me lol. Found you from the Dishonored video, you do great work. Never stop!
Btw if you edit this, even more props cuz I know this takes a fk ton of work.
okay yo, youre hella fucking talented. That pen(stylus?) flip was sick when talking about CS. Okay now you twirl it around in your hands. Did you drum? Are you a fucking drummer too?!
The gasp I let out when that fake desk went into your side 😢
I felt that, brother
Just found this channel an hour ago, and I can't stop smiling this entire time - the videos are just so fun, cozy, and also informative! Liked, subbed, and turned on notifications because I legit want to see what you do next. Good luck! :D
haha never been called "cozy" before but I vibe to it. I'm here to just make fun content about the good ol days. Seriously, thanks for going to all those lengths I know it seems small but means the world to a new creator like me.
Totally agree. I'm glad the algorithm picked this one up.
And with all that you didnt even have enough space to keep all the guns the game had to offer so you were forced to sell the worthless ones and then suddenly they became amazing and the previous ones were trash to the point i got tired of it all.
so glad to have found this channel - love seeing such high-quality, passion-filled content! Cheers!

!!! the midnight - Ghost in Your Stereo :O sick song
Dude this is easily the best vid I've seen in months 👏

Sometimes the algorithm hits, this has been one of those times! Looking forward to exploring some more of this channel.
This is partially why I love Paladins. You can pop off with any character, and everything is crazy

The real question is, who is your favorite operator at any point in Siege's history and why is it Tachanka?
assuming developers know what's best for players is to assume they are the best players.
I have never in my life heard of a game where one of the devs is even upper percentile.
I have had so many great games destroyed by devs who don't know how to play their own game.
I think the updates past year 4 in siege is genuinely what killed the game for me

it's ridiculous. I took a three month break from the game when I was on the road and came back to something almost unrecognizable. I have hope for the game, but jesus h dicks it's annoying to see what they've done with it over the years.
and this is one of many reasons why we need a big, unadulterated crash of the Video Game Industry, even harder than in 1983.
In terms of siege. The biggest reason I stopped playing is due to the “patches” being based off Pro players and not the causal player like me. I use to have a lot of fun playing the game but now there isn’t anything fun unless I’m “trying to go pro.”
Introduce op character, rake in money, nerf to ground. Simple and effective
