This is the theme song for my life. This song from Peter's first solo album, after he walked out on his lead role in Genesis, is about spiritual awakening. But it is also inspired by him striking out on his own and following his own path. By the way, his home is near Solsbury Hill.
The lyrics are so inspiring. Great way to start your day. Makes you feel like you can take on anything.
Peter's first BIG solo hit, and perhaps still his best. So much heart and feeling in this one.
Much better than that pop garbage Sledgehammer he put out years later
@@reallymysterious4520 I enjoyed it. A fun song and a clever video. Not everything has to be serious and moody. Peter is a gem with many facets.
Peter Gabriel is definitely worth checking into. 🎉
"I walked right out of the machinery"
Did that when I first heard this song some 40+ years ago
Never regretted
"Solsbury Hill" dropped in 1977. FM rock radio stations played the song for another ten years at least, albeit in lesser rotation. Peter Gabriel was the first lead singer of Genesis. (Check out "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" for a taste). Then he went solo. "Solsbury Hill" was his debut single as a solo artist. Chris Martin, from ColdPlay, was born that year. Brandon Flowers, from The Killers, was born four years later. So they likely heard his music on the radio when they were children and it rubbed off on them. For a taste of more of his hits, check out some of these tunes -- "Games Without Frontier", "Shock The Monkey", "Red Rain", "In Your Eyes", "Big Time", "Digging in the Dirt" -- also check out the album he released last year. "Road to Joy" is a fun track, but "And Still" is a piece of magic. And for a taste of his grittier work, check out "I Don't Remember", "No Self Control", or "Intruder" from his Melt album.
This was his first release after he left Genesis. We didn't know what to think at first but we came around!
An all time favorite. Peter is definitely worth a deeper dive. I heard him on the radio a lot growing up but didn’t fully appreciate his music until I was older. Now I love this song especially. I understand stepping out if the machinery to follow my own way.
Another unique artist. He is very cool Biz.
Love this tune
Need the see Peter do his songs live. Amazing performer!!
Bizbury Hill
Top 15 song in rock history.
Great artist, anything from "Secret World, Live" is great.
Don't Give Up is epic...😎😎
I saw Peter Gabriel perform this song in 1978 at the Bottom Line. The show was fantastic. He performed his first and only album. And the crowd went crazy when Robert Fripp went on stage to perform.
Uplifting
Thank you for featuring Peter. His music is very creative with jaunty melodies and very deep, intellectual lyrics (that i don't always understand) which make you think. I think he was a breath of fresh air in the late 70's when the airways were full of disco and silly big hair heavy bands (IMO of course!!). Another of my favorites is "Games without Frontiers". Schlyrics are a must to try to understand his messages...
Can always count on you for not only music, but GOOD music! Thanks, Biz!
Love this song. It was released 2yrs before I was born.
All his stuff is guuuud.
One of the more popular songs in 7/4. His breakaway song. This left Genesis without a peter, and it showed, or rather didn't show, if you catch my drift. He really stood out.
this was from '77. right after genesis, peter had 4 kick-ass albums ('77, '78, 80, 82), followed by the 1982 "plays live" tour album. that "plays live" double album is epic. the soundscape. tony levin on "stick". incredible ambiance. "family and the fishing net", "intruder" are great ones from "plays live".
I love Peter Gabriel! Especially the album this comes from, Peter Gabriel 1 Car.
Peter was the lead singer of the band Genesis. This song is about leaving the security of that band and taking a risk as a solo artist. Some say the eagle was symbolic of having seen Bruce Springstein in concert and inspiring him to go solo. I like the last verse "You can keep my things...." He doesn't even have to pack. He's out of there.
My heart goes boom boom boom every damn time…smh. Love this song :)
Check out his Secret World tour. Shaking the Tree is a great track.
Oh. In your eyes. Live.
You should check out a live version of this song.
Beautiful song by a creative artist
One of my 6 “musical geniuses.” Amazing songwriter, singer and artist. Tons of groundbreaking stuff. Suggestions: No Self Control, Intruder, I Have the Touch, Lay Your Hands on Me, Don’t Give Up, Big Time, Steam, Kiss That Frog, Secret World and Growing Up. This song is highly influenced by his experience of leaving Genesis and deciding to embark in n a solo career.
This was his first solo hit, and it's a poetic description of his dawning realisation that he'd have to leave his former band, Genesis, in order to do the music he felt he needed to, all set in that slightly off-kilter 7/4 time. Peter Gabriel has a deep, satisfying well of songs. Almost every one of his albums is a change in direction from his previous one. If you like this song, try "Here Comes the Flood" - if you preferred "Sledge Hammer" try "Big Time". For another style again, try "I Don't Remember", or "Shock the Monkey", or "Red Rain", or "Shaking the Tree", or...
I Love this song
I love me some Salisbury streak.
I also love this song.
The notion of being "taken home" is powerful indeed...
Check out In your eyes. Live on Secret world tour. Pure joy! x
Hey Biz you should google Solsbury Hill a real and mystical place. peter is definitely worth the jouney.
Or young Peter with Genesis. Firth of Fifth
Great reaction
Great song Biz
Try Rhythm of the Heat.
"walked right out of the machinery" refers to walking out of Genesis as they were becoming hugely successful.
This song has always hit me in some weird way. The truth is I don't even understand most of the lyrics. The "grab your things I've come to take you home" line is a pretty strong line all on its own, with just the backing music and delivery for context.
Both spiritual allegory and factual retelling of his decision to leave Genesis.
Check him out with Genesis suppers ready
It's long but awesome
Don't think I ever seen you review The Velvet Underground. Ya, OK, It's mostly Lou Reed, but they were very influential.
❤try “Land of Confusion “ you will love the video❤❤
That's Genesis, after Peter Gabriel left. Great song, but the video has political ideas that turned out to be quite wrong, IMHO.
@@user-pf7jm9go6oKinda right as well. I mean, Ronnie did have dementia.
My exacreaction ,interesting .
You did not compare Peter Gabriel to ColdPlay!!! 😱
Did you analyze the rhythm? I will not give it away....
Do tell. Please?
i want Jesus to say grab your things i've come to take you HOME!!!!
