This song wasn't written about a girl, but about the music industry.
"Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" are AMAZING songs from Daryl Hall & John Oates.
YES ! Those are my favorite songs from them !! 😊
Man Eater is a favorite!
Love early H&O - agree your choices are their best plus Wait For Me
And One on One
My favorite songs 💖
Live at Darryl's House on internet. Celo Green and Darryl do this song together. He has a funky band behind them. I listen to it almost everyday.
YES!
That is an AWESOME version of this song.
BP, PLEASE react to this version! Funk for DAYS!
The groove on the Daryl CeeLo version is as thick and spicy as a delicious hummus.
I hope he checks it out!!
Quoted from Wikipedia"John Oates has stated that while many listeners may assume the lyrics are about a relationship, in reality, the song, "is about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively."
Daryls voice at 70 is still amazing
And to think Daryl and John met for the first time while riding in the same elevator together.. The rest is history!
Hip Hop Has a habit of sampling great music of the past. When you can't be creative on your own just take from the masters of the past. The number of songs you have said that you have heard as a sample is insane.
That was my reaction as well 😂💐
Pop music was massively influenced by the rhythm and blues that came before it, but you wouldn't call that uncreative I suspect 😁
stop being a hater
@@xmathmanx Well Rhythm and Blues was at some point influenced as well, nothing wrong with being inspired or influenced and creating your own vision of something. However to actually take and sample part of something for 3 to 10 seconds and put it into your creation is not cool. So many amazing creative people have had their work earn other people money. Earn your money not use someone else's work to earn money. I am a street performer and I see people all the time using famous songs to earn money. This is not right, make your own music. Never like cover bands or people that leech of the success of others. I have created all my own routines and scripts and do my best not to copy or use the same things as 90% of the other people who do the same type of entertainment as myself. I want to be known for doing something that no one has seen someone else do. I was inspired and use to use what is known as common patter with my presentation, however learned it is more important what you say and how you react to those you entertain than what is happening. People remember more of what was talked about to remember what happened. have a good day. I do love me some Rhythm and Blues !!!!
@@gadzooks3089 Not hating, just stating the facts and truth. Have a nice day. :)
John Oates still works, he's still in Philadelphia mentoring young musicians.
Daryl Hall used to have a TV show where he would invite guests for jam sessions. He did I Can't Go For That with the legendary CeeLo Green. Amazing performance !!! You should check it out
I think he still has it. Daryl's Place or something like that. Great!
@@marianclough8577at his House❤
i concur
Live from Daryl’s House!! Awesome show. It’s on UA-cam. Lots of various artists. Check out Patrick Stump (FallOut Boys!) 🔥🔥🔥
It's still going on with new episodes
I heard that the song was written with the music industry in mind.. how Hall and oats refused to "sell their their soul". It is meant to have the subtlety , sounding at first like a woman.. but really its about music company.
Heard that also
One On One, Sara Smile, Private Eyes (stalker song hahaha) , Man Eater, Kiss On My List....more top hits for you to check out!
You forgot "She's Gone".
Michael Jackson told Daryl Hall that he “stole” that opening beat for his song. It was always Daryl Hall and John Oates because they said they were two individuals sharing the stage and it kept their identity. Referring to selling their soul to the record labels. This song is highly sampled.
Can't verify the story, but it did come out a year before Billie Jean
People get hung up on stuff like this… but basic beats or common chord progressions need to be wide open or the courts would be jammed.
Wow!! They look sooo young here!! ❤
@zackattack...you're sooo right, thank you for some common sense!
@@005uz345 There are interviews with both Daryl Hall and John Oates, where they tell the story of How Micharl Jackson came up to them at We Are The World recording and told them that and he hoped they did not mind. They said they were flattered.
The early days of MTV were the best
MJ came up to Daryl Hall at the We Are The World recording session and thanked him/apologized to him for lifting this beat for Billie Jean. Hall was super gracious, saying that all good musicians “steal” from each other.
Daryl has a phenomenal voice! Yes he is the lead singer! Definitely check out “Sara Smile” it really shows off his vocals! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Great reaction ! May I suggest Sara Smile and She’s Gone by Hall & Oates, arguably their two best songs.
I agree 100%
Daryl is the blond guy, John Oates the short guy with the dark hair. Daryl is still working, check out Daryl's House on youtube.
LOVE Daryl's house! Such great collabs with so many different artists.
Oates is working too, he has become an acoustic blues performer. Unfortunately, there was some bad blood between them and a lawsuit. Don't know the details.
This was also used as a sample in ' Sunrise' by Simply Red!
Love that song, too!
I love Simply Red!
@@mariannematus6703 Me too! A lovely summer song🥰😎
LOVE that song!!!
We were so spoiled back then. These guys were just a phenomenal band with a long line of hits.
Darrel Hall's voice and swag is natural. He used to hang out around
Motown, that was a soulful atmosphere to learn his chops in.
Blue-eyed soul from Philadelphia.
This is Philly soul.
...and ALL before "Auto-tune". Back in the day, this was called TALENT!
The sax player DeChant has been with them since like day 3. Such an important influence, Daryl and John dubbed him the “&” in their name.
since youre a hip hop guy .. a fun fact .. this was sampled by DE LA SOUL for a track called 'SAY NO GO''
"I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" hit No. 1 on both Billboard Pop & R&B charts.
Sara's smile.
King of blue eyed soul
Dude. Hall and Oates had bangers in the 80s. Check out "Rich girl"
Yes!! It's got soul! Check out rich girl PLEASE!
Sara smile, Daryl Hall John Oates
I may be wrong but I thought this song was about the music industry demands, not a personal relationship.
And as others commented you just gotta see the version of this song from decades later on Daryll Hall's Live from Daryll's House featuring Cee Lo Green. It's fantastic!
You are right on both counts. The version you mention on Live from Daryl's House is phenomenal.
You’re right it was about record deal type thing
you need to check out the Daryl's House series. Daryl Hall is a genius music arranger. he has artists of all kinds visit him, he recreates with them their hits with his musicians and sometimes rearranges the pieces. its great. he is now the "elder statesman" of music.
Quite a few bands directed their songs to record companies in an indirect way to show their displeasure with how things were handled...Billy Squier's " STROKE" same thing. People mistook it right away because of title...lol
Barracuda
It’s sad that not much has changed. Artists are still singing about this.
Add "Death On Two Legs" by Queen to ripping the music industry.
I love that the sax player joins in on much of the singing.
Daryl Hall had a show called Daryl’s House. Various performers coke on and perform Hall and Oates songs, and then Daryl will perform their songs. C Lo Green doing this song was one of my favorites.
He still has the show. New episodes are out
@@tonimichael8366 oh, I didn’t realize he still had it.
This is an absolute jam! One of the best 80s tunes!!
To say I have always loved these guys is a understatement. ! 🥰
you ever heard the pomo remix of this song? good stuff
Although I love this cut, and it's one of my favorites by Hall and Oates, "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone", depending on the day, are my two favorites by them. Today it's "Sara Smile".
there is a reason this type of music is called Blue-eyed Soul.
Oh you have got to check out “Daryl’s House” (Daryl is the one singing lead on this) He has a whole segment of awesome musicians and he invites other other artist to come and jam with them. You need to check out Ceelo Green and Daryl doing this song….. it will blow your mind how good it sounds. Daryl is a phenomenal artist and songwriter. I grew up listening to them and had the Hall and Oates H2O album in the 80’s. 🎼❤️🎼
It's crazy how all the old bad ass songs are now in current tunes! I love it!!
This song came on while I was eating at a local restaurant a few weeks ago and EVERYBODY in the place, (all ages, races, etc.,), started nodding and bouncing their heads. This song is a true classic and an eternal jam.
Hall & Oates. A deep rabbit hole of Philly blue-eyed soul. Daryl's voice is killer. If you haven't already done so, check out Live at Daryl's House where he has guest artists (big name) come into his home studio to play each other's songs. His house band doing the backing are pure talent and worth your time alone. Just amazing what he's doing.
Blue eyed soul 💙💙💙
Definitely check out live from Daryl’s house. I believe he duetted this one with CeeLo Green.
The bass line was used by MJ in Billie Jean.
Before Billie Jean
@fayesouthall6604 the bassline was the inspiration for the bassline in Billie Jean.
We don’t have enough Saxophone in today’s rock music, and it shows!
We need more saxophone playing in our modern music 🎷
Hall and Oates wait for me Daryl voice is amazing
"Sarah Smile" is one of my favorite songs from them, "Jimmy Wayne" does an incredible cover of it, you should do a reaction to his version.Thanks.
They said they became Daryl Hall and John Oates because when they were college roommates and for a while after starting out in music, that is how their names appeared on the mailbox....in that order
Daryl & John gave us so many timeless songs. Daryl only gets better! Cee Lo Green doing this one at Daryl's House is oh, so good.
This is a blast from the past 🔥🔥🔥
It also sounded amazing when Simply Red sampled it in “Sunrise”❤️
“She’s Gone” should be your next Hall & Oats song! ❤
The 2 Live Crew were the first rap group to sample this for their 'Do Wah Diddy' / 'I Can't Go For That' 12" single back in 1988. The second was De La Soul.
Hall & Oats are the biggest selling duo of all time
Love hall and oats great song ❤
Daryl came from a music background, his father came from a choral-group and his mother was a vocal coach. Go check out Daryl’s site, Live from Daryl's House
"Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" by Hall and Oates.
Hall and Oates take me back to the best years of my life, yet their music is timeless. My all-time favorite songs are Wait for Me and One on One
Look up CeeLo and Daryl doing this song. Daryl invites all sort of artists to sing their songs and his songs together. It's an amazing version of the song.
Gotta love that Hall & Oates!! Some of the greatest music ever!!
Hall and Oates are the #1 Pop Duel of all time. It felt like they had a new hit every couple of months from the early to the middle 80's. It was a great decade for music!
Daryl Hall sang most of the lead vocalist. John Oates primarily played the electric guitar and provided backing vocals. The two wrote most of the songs.
These two cranked out hit after hit for over a decade I'm sure. Everyone was sampling their stuff.
R/B AND POP !!!
Blue eyed soul. Best music of my life.
Great blue eyed soul!!
The 80s put out some fabulous music!!
Private eyes is my favorite from the hall n oats era here.
Check out Daryl's House, a real treat with Daryl and many great musicians jamming together. Lots of big names there always
It's even better now, 40+ years later
My Mum was a big Hall and Oates fan so I heard their stuff when I was a kid. We went to their Melbourne concert about 10 years ago or something, and they were AWESOME!
5:25-Yeah everyone knows how to program keyboards nowadays...But back then we knew how to PLAY them and (Gasp) sing at the same time! 10:41-Yeah they wrote most of thier songs together--I caught them live in 86 and they were studio perfect ( Sax player u saw wore the same shades and wore a cool leopard-spotted yellow suit, bassist T-bone had on a slick pimp hat.)
My favorite song by Hall & Oats.
They were highly inspired/influenced by Motown. They released an album in 2004 "Our Kind of Soul"-all covers of great Motown songs. I love that album as much as my first ones "Voices" and "Private Eyes"
Darryl is lead singer. They write together but between tours they don't hang out but are very close. Met in college and hit it off with songwriting friendship but other than that they have different lives. Long, amazing career, beloved and admired by Rock n Roll world, etc. Love them. Oh, Darryl said actually the song was about a manager that they didn't agree with and said they can't go for that (whatever it was but they were all for selling records any kinda way. So they turned it into a relationship song. Haha. )
Love all of this great music from the 60s, 70s and 80s that you've been diving into. It brings back a lot of memories.
Im not surprised that youre the reactor that picked up on and appreciated the layering on this recording. 😎
Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers did an excellent cover of this live as they drove down the highway with acoustic guitars and an iPad keyboard!
One on one.
👍
Takin me a little bit back to my childhood. Their tracks were bigger around that time. I never truly got into music until my teens. But there was somethin about their songs that reached me back then.
yes, the harmonies are beautiful
SO much great music back in the day. Great reaction, as always. Have you heard/reacted to their "Sara Smile"?
Daryl hall grew up About thirty five miles from me. I remember a lot of people thought they were black when their first album came out.
One of my favorites It’s a Laugh 👍🏻❤️
BP, you just took me back to my high school years ❤ I watch live from Daryle's house whenever I find it streaming. He's a music Genius. The show he invites other artists and jam together and have a meal afterwards. 🎶🎶💖 there's so many songs I can't list them all. Remake of Lost that loving feeling. Awesome artists.
“now you want my Soul”…I Can’t Go For That….The Record Industry.
Daryl Hall has written so many songs, it is unreal. Most other artists have done. You should dig into his song book.
1981, my friend; the music video world was in its infancy and this was recorded 2 years before MJ's 'Billy Jean'.
not everyone's favourite by H&O but for me this is IT - cooler than cool sound --- timeless in my opinion
Lots of people here are commenting on the version with CeeLo Green from live from Daryls house that came out about 12 years ago, I think. Do yourself a favor and watch that version. It's incredible. Daryl is still tall and blonde and plays the guitar in this version, as well as singing some of the lead. Still a great singer in his 70s.
Flashing back to childhood and roller rinks. What an awesome song, thanks for featuring it!
This was my favorite song when I was 12! That bass would come on the radio & I was right there! It was played alot on the R&B station. You have to react to "Sara Smile" & "Private Eyes by Hall & Oates.
"You've got the (my) body now you want my soul" The soul part is what he can't go for. He just wants a "friend with benefits."
Actually, the artists have stated that this was a song about the grasping and corrupt record labels who wanted too much from them.
I just looked at Darryl Hall's YT channel and not only did I find classic episodes from the cable days but he is still putting on the show now from YT. New episodes. I'm going to check it out.
Live from Daryl's House with Ceelo Green...they kill this. Great reaction btw.
Omg simply red ! I forgot about that song ! What was their huge song though holding back the years ! I love that song ! He hits that note !
Hey BP, glad you’re getting around to watching all types of classic music that many people don’t realize helped define the sounds of future artists especially in hip-hop/rap. It’s great when someone says they recognize a beat or melody and are now getting to experience where they came from.
Im enjoying this blast from the past for a lady of a certain age who lived and loved that music. Boppin at 11.38pm Irish time! Keep it coming!
