Last one for today my blocked reaction Duran Duran Rio
Darn it not fair.
That stinks that Rio was blocked. It's my favorite Duran Duran song. Did you like it?
@@VinzClorthokeymasterofGozer I love Duran Duran and I think J would like Rio I would have loved to see his reaction.
:((((
Darn! I love Duran Duran and that song Rio too!
Peter Gabriel a Musical Genius
big call!!
Solsbury Hill is in England. It's a small iron age hill-fort... a heart-home for many English. A site of historic heritage.
Thanks for that
When I was in England I had to go, because of this song :)
The west country, magic!
So this Hill is his happy place, going 'home' and the location of his heart. Free to pursue his musical dreams.
Is that where one can find the Steak?🙃
It's about why he left Genesis. The band revolved more and more around him as the "leader" and the others weren't happy. They had tour after tour and Peter had a pregnant wife at that time with complications and the others didn't understand why he didn't like the touring ('walk right out of the machinery"). With that in mind the lyrics make alot of sense 😊
i have listened to this song hundreds of times and never knew what it was about, thank you for that. i did know about his wife etc but not what the song was about
you are welcome. it all makes sense with that background in mind. "close their eyes but still can see" = genesis members who couldn't understand his struggle with his wife. the hill itself is probably just the moment he realized he must leave
Some parallels with Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust', I think; "When the kids had killed the man, I had to break up the band"
Ok...so he was part of genesis.....I thought this was a Phil collins song...my whole life..until right now.
I thought it was about a guy in a mental or drug hospital and his dad came to take him back home.
"You can keep my things, they've come to take me home" 🥰
That line always touches me and I never know quite why.
@@rebeccatowner6700 I feel like it touches me and reminds me that in the end, none of our "stuff" matters. What really matters is how you lived this life you were given.
Contrary to one of your other posters, Solsbury Hill has nothing to do with the site of Stonehenge, which is on Salisbury Plain. Little Solsbury Hill rises above the Somerset village of Batheaston and affords views over the city of Bath. It is about two miles from Peter Gabriel's old home in Box, Wiltshire (which also boasts an excellent brewery!). The name, Solsbury, is believed to be derived from Sulis (a Celtic god) + bury (hill). The Roman name for Bath was Aqua Sulis. The hill has the remains of an Iron Age hill fort and is purported to be the site of the famous battle of Baden (496 AD).
Great history.
Thank you Grahame, totally correct! The Roman Spa at Bath is amazing & I just love Bath. Well apart from the traffic & I took my driving test in Wells! 🤣😂🤣
Just got to say that Bath & the surrounding area are absolutely beautiful & the architecture is stunning. I personally prefer Devon or Somerset (and their Cider 🍺) but it's a wonderful part of the world! I've been all round the world but England in the Summer is one of the most beautiful places on the planet!!!
Gotta check out 'Games Without Frontiers'.
Yes, please!
I thought it was called "gays without front ears"
My sentiment EXACTLY.
Featuring Kate Bush singing the French part in the background! "Jeux sans frontières..."
'Digging In The Dirt' is a forgotten gem also.
Peter Gabriel is just a genius. Great tune brother 💗
big call!! not quite a genius
One of my high school classmates, Steve The Deacon Hunter, is playing the acoustic intro to this song. He’s had a long career playing with many artists including Lou Reed and Alice Cooper.
Barbara, I bet Steve had a lot of interesting stories to tell.
His Facebook page is Steve the Deacon Hunter.
Is it legal to hunt Deacons???
This was his first solo single after leaving Genesis.
Such an under-rated song!!! One of Gabriel's best.
Have heard this song alot since it came out, first time i have ever seen the video, but one thing i have learned is never try to figure out a Peter Garbriel video, they are all kinda odd but i love them all, though the whole cabbage thing is confusing....lol
They’re always entertaining, though! 😁
Like the video for Sledgehammer... it's pretty trippy!
There's a French phrase used as a term of love and endearment: "mon petit chou" and it means "my little cabbage." If he was leaving Genesis to be with his loved ones, maybe this phrase/term was on his mind? It's hard to know for sure, but this is the only way the cabbage motif makes any sense to me at all.
In Your Eyes and Big Time are great as well.
I’ve done in your eyes
@@JayveeTV Oops sorry
Still, Big time is BIG!
So with your choices here
Red Rain J, you gotta do it
These lyrics are pure poetry. Beautiful!
One of my favorite songs of all time!! Gets me everytime!! Loved your reaction to it!! Oh my your love of music, of all different styles, the joy on your face, it's truly wonderful!!
Go out and enjoy! Soooo much respect - damn Dude!!
Probably the greatest song ever written about leaving a band. And it's in 7/4 as well, which is always a welcome thing to behold on the pop charts.
Facts!!
I saw Peter Gabriel live singing this song at Glastonbury 94. Amazing atmosphere and a truly great performance.
ROCKSTAR MONENT ⭐ 👍
I’ve always loved this song.
Another winner
I agree
SUCH a fantastic song!! Peter Gabriel is amazing. Thank you, JV 🙏🏼💛
Peter Gabriel did the vocals on a lovely song by the Afro-Celt Sound System, called When You’re Falling. Worth a listen.
Red Rain and In Your Eyes
Yes to both of these! They're amazing.
Red Rain , here comes the flood , in your eyes so many songs
Hey there. The song is awesome. It’s about his breaking away from the band Genesis and going on his own.
He’s a poetic and musical genius! Great song!!!
As others have said: This song is about his decision to leave Genesis. I've heard him say in a 1989 interview that he felt as if he was becoming part of a machine -- a rock star, and needing that sense of ego gratification. So, as this song says, he stepped out of the machinery. Plus, he didn't need a replacement, because the drummer (Phil Collins) took over lead vocals while maintaining his position as the drummer (on the studio albums).
I think it was a great decision for both sides. Both were happier, and one source of amazing songs became two.
@@stephenriggs8177 I agree, and the more I thought about the matter, the more I could see that if Gabriel had stayed in the band, they either would have broken up completely or would have become Peter Gabriel's backing band. Gabriel had too much songwriting for him to do to only get a tiny amount released on each album.
Peter's breakout solo and his angst about it. He is such a talented man and it worked out well for both him and Genesis - not to mention Phil Collins who replaced him. Big Time is a good one to check out.
A timeless classic song, one of my all time favs. Thanks for playing brother. God bless from Australia.
Solsbury Hill is 3 miles from my home... Always loved this song and Genesis.. Great reaction..
Fun fact: This song has a very unusual time signature for a pop song. It's in 7/4.
Thanks for mentioning this. Gives it a very propulsive feel as your brain is always reaching for that eighth beat that's gone ;-). There are only two bars in the sequence that are 4/4 (or you could look at it as one 8/4 bar), landing on "home," which is super effective to make it resolve and stand out. This song is great live, there are some good videos of the band doing it live at various points in his career.
@@nmgal8543 Thanks for the great mini-analysis! I wish I knew more about music theory, but songs with unusual time signatures have always been my jam. :)
@@Cyssane You must dig Rush then :-)
@@nmgal8543 I'm Canadian. You tell me. ;)
@@nmgal8543 As an aside, check out this arrangement of the children's song Frère Jacques in 7/4 time (usually it's in 4/4): ua-cam.com/video/-UA6n7iKeYQ/v-deo.html
I love this song. Peter Gabriel did so well!
He may have all great songs, but you have all great reactions, JV. 👍👌✌️
JAY Solsbury Hill was RELEASED IN 1978 ,,, I REALLY Miss the 1970s BAAAAAD ,,Thanks Jay for your reaction ,, Take care brother
Great songs tonight J thank you.
Not heard this for years, forgotten just how fantastic it is
Wonderful song... I am so happy whenever I hear this. Thanks for your reaction!
Always loved this song growing up🎤❤️🇬🇧
You really can't go wrong with Peter Gabriel. More great songs from him you haven't done yet include Games Without Frontiers, Shock the Monkey, I Don't Remember, I Have the Touch, Digging in the Dirt, Steam, Biko, San Jacinto, Shaking the Tree, Red Rain, Blood of Eden, Big Time, and more I've probably missed!
I grew up in the 70s and 80s and still managed to miss this one until somewhere in my 30s. It’s such a freeing song. Also, I laughed out loud when you asked about the song being from the perspective of the cabbage. Artists are odd people sometimes... (as an artist myself)
Im 60 And dont remember it either;; I was just checking out 70s SONGS And found this a while back ,
This was Peter Gabriel’s first solo record. And I loved it so different thanks for sharing Jay 🇬🇧
I absolutely love this song!!!
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen, had no choice
[Chorus 1]
I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
[Verse 2]
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
'Til I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
[Chorus 2]
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
Ay, back home
[Verse 3]
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
[Chorus 3]
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said
"You can keep my things, they've come to take me home"
YEEESSSS
Peter Gabriel's song Wallflower is amazing. Older work but amazing.
Beautiful Classic!
Drawing on his own departure from Genesis, Gabriel cut the best song about that point in your life when you cut away and make a new life for yourself. Fantastic song; thanks for giving it a listen!
If you listen to the words carefully they are in tune with his spiritual side......the prodigal son returning home. Turning water into wine is the first miracle CHRIST performed in his life 🕊️
Yes!...... "Son, Grab your things, I've come to take you home!"
You’d think the human form of the creator of the universe would do something with a little more substance or meaning rather than provide someone with an alcoholic drink..
@@filthyclown8033 grow up
@@filthyclown8033 You gonna say no to your mom?
Filthy clown you have to put it into proper context. First it was a wedding, they ran out of wine and his mom said they needed more wine. He didn't want to do it for he said it wasn't his time yet....but caved in to mom. Second back then that and water were bout only things to drink and watering sources were scarce.
"Shock The Monkey" or "Games Without Frontiers" (with Kate Bush singing the title in French) would be good follow-ups. "Moribund the Burgermeister" would be a fun Peter Gabriel sonic adventure for you.
Aloha Jay 🏝 thank you for another wonderful reaction.Peter Gabriel's Big Time and Sledgehammer are great songs.
I guess Gabriel has always had a fascination with produce 🤣 This is totally my favorite song from him. Saw him in concert. Amazing!🔥
Hill that Stonehenge is on. Love love this song
No, Stonehenge is outside the city of Salisbury, about 40 km from Solsbury Hill..
No its not thats Salisbury plain , Solsbury Hill is were he was living just down the road
Just painted to this. What a classic!
Peter Gabriel is Boss loved him since I was 13 im 46 now , Solsbury Hill is a sacred place in the UK
This is such an iconic song! He was once the singer of Genesis. 💓
One of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs❤
A spiritual experience song. Very personal and intense message.
One of my favorites
Please check out Rhythm of the Heat. Also In Your Eyes from the Secret World tour!
Definite "yes" on Rhythm of the Heat!
I love this one. Peter at his best. Thanks for sharing.
Love Love Love. One of my favorite songs!!!!
Beautiful song!!
One of my very favorite songs.
One of my favourite songs of the seventies.
I love this song!!! Please do Shock the Monkey next!
Bit late to this comments section. Loved this song for many years. Peter's music, along with Kate Bush, brought a lot of Solace and Hope to a lost and frightened young man in the 80's. Peace All
Haven't heard this song in years! Mega talented! Enjoy your videos!
There is a live performance of this song that is clips from different years compiled together. Very good. Glad to see you finally react to this.
Little Solsbury Hill (more commonly known as Solsbury Hill) is a small flat-topped hill and the site of an Iron Age hill fort. ... It is located above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England.
This is so emotional!! First reaction I’ve seen of this and it’s lovely to see 🥲🥲🥲
Brilliant song, Peter Gabriel is astounding. Check out some of his Genesis songs Jovaughn
the most beautiful song about "Get your shit and get going!"
I always thought this song was about Peter having a STE. A spiritual transformative experience. The eagle flew out the night and spoke to him, however, he couldn’t say anything because his friends would think he was some kind of nut - as he says in the song. Amazing song.
Thankfully got to see Peter Gabriel at the NEC arena UK, got given free tickets from his management team.
I always thought the cabbage was a wry back reference to his Genesis flower costume but who knows 😆 it’s Gabriel so it could be anything
"Solsbury Hill" is a song by English musician Peter Gabriel. He wrote the song about a spiritual experience atop Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England, after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead singer since its inception. The song was his debut single.
Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of Genesis. Phil Collins was the drummer. Then Peter left the group and Phil became the lead singer.
Check out Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush doing, Don't Give Up.
The song was used for the end credits in the movie, The Bone Collector, starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. Thanks 👍
Fist gig I ever went to Was Gabriel in Birmingham after he left Genesis. The remaining members put out 'Then there were three', a great album (you should check it out). But Gabriel on his own was a night to remember. Still listen to his music now.
While I do not know exactly what he was feeling or going through while separating from his band, I can tell you that this song resonates so strongly the spiritual awakening I have undergone the past 5 years. I can only imagine that he, too, went through one.
It’s a masterpiece
My favourite by him! He wrote it about leaving the Band Genesis (Phil Collins was also a member) xx
"in your eyes" secret garden tour live version is my fav song performance by Peter Gabriel u have watch it bro it phenomenal if you warming to up to Peters talent this version and performance with all the other performances in this will blow you away!!
This is one of my favourite tunes. Just recently found your channel and I love your content, keep it up bro!
Played this at my dad's funeral. He loved him.
Think I was named after him
Blood Of Eden or any track from his album "US" are great, Sinead O'Connor doing backing vocals on some trscks too!
JV, Peter Gabriel is the only man that can put the words Pirouette, Silhouette, and Etiquette into a brilliant song.
Another great reaction! Don’t know if someone commented on the cabbage theme yet, but I read in some PG interview that he and some other British artists left London for the country side in the 70s. Many started growing kale and cabbage, since it’s a healthy and cheap crop. So the cabbage symbolizes breaking up from the humdrum (and in PGs case also from Genesis) and the longing for a simpler life.
Phil Collins from Genesis did a great "home" song called Take Me Home. Peter Gabriel was the singer for Genesis when they first formed.
Hi Jay, Solsbury Hill is just North of Bath in England and it's about 10 minutes from where Curt Smith of Tears for Fears lived as a kid 👍
He doesn't really release a whole lot of songs but what he does is quality without a doubt.
He's got a wonderful imagination and ability to think "outside the box" when it comes to writing his music.
So different from many other run-of-the-mill artists.
Nice to hear some Peter Gabriel out there another great song of his is Moribund The Burgermeister it is awesome
One of the best songs ever
I feel that Peter wrote this about leaving Genisis, but if you listen closely... you feel the life of a Disciple. One of my favorite songs!
Love Peter Gabriel
This is about him leaving genesis, when they weren't very understanding towards some family circumstances, and him feeling like he was just going thru the motions with them. My old work stopped leaving speeches (because they were always full of hatred for management). So I sent this round on my last day...so apt.
Love this song, love Peter, love Genesis, and I have to say, this is one of those rare band split-ups that worked out to everyone's advantage. Everybody got to go in a better artistic direction, but without the acrimonious falling out of so many other bands. They stayed friends and collaborators, while putting out the best music of their careers.
You should see the live video version of this song. It seems like a fun song and they Peter Gabriel likes to dance while singing. Solsbury Hill (DNA)
Love it! Another great song about going home, that this reminds me of, Leo Sayer's 'Orchard Road'. Tragically underrated masterpiece. Highly recommend.
And maybe "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?"
As far as cabbage lady at the end. My humble take is its a metaphor for as people we are planted, grown, harvested and processed to fullfil what others consider to be our role in society. I wish I could go home somehow. Thanks for posting.
Great song for you to react to is: Your house us a bonus track on her hit album Jagged little pill. It is a great song with great lyrics.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
Really enjoying your videos. You’re really good at what you do. Don’t stop!
Thank you for sharing your passion for music, this is one of my favourite PG songs.
I don't know how I got here, but so glad I did, I just spent the last 3 hours feeling the joy. You are a treasure.
