The audience.....the fans, all are happy and experiencing heavy uphoria. They came with high expectations which were exceeded by the live performance. These bands and audiences were ubiquitous throughout the 70,s and beyond. Competition in the music industry mixed with the freedom of creativity for vocal artists and musicians back then made this possible.
Stories say that the drummer's parents were in the audience that night and he wanted to impress them... he did by 'going nuts' and playing much faster that expected.
What blows me away is that He taught himself how to play guitar, and ended up creating his own unique *finger picking* style, in a Rock Band of all things!!!!
Mark is left-handed person playing a right-handed guitar which makes sense since as in his case the left hand is very busy all of the time. He also wrote & arranged the music. Differing tempo was important to them, is what I think. It gave the audience a chance to contribute. xo He is also one of the only R & R artists who uses his fingers & not a pick. This is jamming. The guitar is talking to & responding to the keyboard player, you will see Mark nod to the key board player. This is live long play performances which was incredible to witness. Love Mark & all the incredible musicians he played with over so many years. x
The brilliance of this performance lies in 2 particular places. First is the fact that almost every riff Mark Knopfer plays is a brilliant melodic hook. He could’ve written fifteen different hit songs with the riffs he put into this song alone. Secondly, it’s the variable dynamics and tempo of the performance. We will likely never hear a track like this on a record, as these days, mastering engineers tend to apply so much compression to a mix that it has no changes in dynamics:the soft parts are made loud, and the loud parts are squashed, causing a song to play at a consistent volume throughout. Moreover, in this performance, the band very subtly speeds up and slows the performance, creating feelings of tension and release. Modern recording practise is to snap every instrument’s rhythm to a fixed grid, ensuring we never feel that tension.
Also notice a subtlety most people miss: When Mark is singing about Guitar George being "strictly rhythm", he lets the rhythm guitarist, Hal Lindes, take the lead.
The story goes that his father was in the audience that night, and was given a pass by the rest of the band to go a little nuts, and show off a bit. It ended up making this into a truly tremendous performance.

One of the best bands of all time. The best bands were coming from the UK at that time and each of them left their mark. You have once again stumbled on a band that will give you a music experience like no other. Good luck on your Rock journey, may you have the same pleasure and experience that we the young generation of the time had. This music will change your life and you will still be playing it for the rest of your life. You might not believe me just now but it will happen. All the best.
Mark Knopfler is an insanely gifted guitar player. He is one of the most sought after session guitarists. As mentioned previously, he picks with his fingers because he found that he can produce much better sounds this way. A gift to the musical world
Session gutarist? He's one of the greatest players of all time, I'm stunned by that comment, he's never been sought after, he is a global superstar. Always the front man and mostly a solo career
Mark Knopfler has a quite sizable catalog. Not all of it with Dire Straits or even Rock and Roll. He plays a lot of Bluegrass music. Finger style guitar player.
"Honky-Tonk" is a type of Bar/Restaurant that plays live Rock/Country music, or sometimes the music that would be played at those establishments was referred to as "Honky-Tonk". The world's largest honky tonk is "Billy Bob's" here in Fort Worth, Texas.
David was Mark's brother but left the band before this tour, he was rhythm guitar. He replaced by Hal Lindes and subsequently by Jack Sonni. Pick Withers was the original drummer, but he left in 1982 and was replaced by Terry Williams who is playing drums here. Interesting fact, Mark claims that despite having played the song thousands of times, the closing solo is never played exactly the same. If you enjoyed this check out the version of the same song from the Nelson Mandela birthday concert at Wembley stadium in the late 80's. Also worth checking out is a song called Tunnel of Love from Wembley Arena in 1985 (the closing solo is a work of art) and any live version of a song called Telegraph Road. Mark never uses a pick its all finger picked, he is also naturally left handed but plays guitar right handed. Also this song is actually about a real band that Mark saw in a pub.
I went to see them live in Main Rd Manchester with my wife, it was the best concert we have ever seen.....you did them Justice, I loved your video...fantastic.
Its brilliant, its over 40 years old! I was at Hammersmith for this show in July 1983, it was great at the time, all these years later you realise it was genius. They were all geniuses, but as you say, Terry Williams's drumming was just amazing, he played like that for a couple of hours or so! Now react to the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar and vocals Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar John Illsey, Bass guitar Terry Williams, Drums Alan Clark, keys And for these shows July 1983, additional guest keys Tommy Mandel
The finger picking style really makes DS music distinctive from other rock bands. "Brothers in Arms" is not a "rock" song but is one of their most thoughtful songs.
Thanks for this reaction! It brough me right back to my bedroom when I was about 15 ('78/'79) when this single was released - I was hooked immediately. For more Dire Straights, you might do all the cuts on Making Movies, better yet, react to the entire album....I promise, you won't be disappointed.....

Fingerstyle rock guitar at it's best. He was and is amazing. Thanks for the review. Dire Straits means big trouble. Sultans Of Swing was the name of the jazz band they went in out of the rain to listen to while they were traveling. True story and the inspiration for this tune.
There are many versions of this track over the 30years of Dire Straits. This track got better and better every time they played. Check the Wembley live version with a saxophone along with the guitar.
Great pick up on the story telling, that's exactly what it is. Mark Knopfler is great at stories, and this is the story of a guy out in London one evening dropping into a small pub and watching the band playing in the corner. Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road are also great stories from Dire Straits.
Great reaction. Welcome to the wonderful world that has Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits in it. Mark Knopfler is a master story teller. His songs take you on a journey and always have a deeper meaning. His voice and guitar work together to add the emotion to the stories like no other. There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985, “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Brothers in Arms”, “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version, and so much more. His solo career - 10 albums and a bunch of movie scores is fantastic as well.
Guys, it is so fantastic to watch your reaction to the genius that is Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits band. Sultans of Swing is a great beginning. As a lyricist, Mark is all about storytelling. One rainy night, he heard a pub band playing some jazz. He walked in "outa the rain" to "hear the jazz go down". There were very few patrons there "competition from other places" etc. But the catch for Mark was the fact they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. Almost all of Mark's songs are stories, coupled with some of the most extraordinary guitar playing in various music genres you can imagine. "River of Love", "Tunnel of Love", "Skateaway"", "Telegraph Road", "Portabella Belle", "Brothers in Arms", "Money for Nothing", "The Bug", "Walk of Life", "Why worry", "Calling Elvis", " When it comes to you", "You and your friend", "Heavy Fuel", "Private Investigations", "So far away from me", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hold on", "Local Hero", the acoustic versions of "Wild Theme", "Smooching", and the Electric guitar versions of "Going Home" based on the melodies in "Wild Theme" - all the music soundtracks he wrote for the movies Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, and Altamira, and duet album with the one of the other greatest guitarists - Chet Atkins. ALL OF THIS in a myriad of musical genres when he still had his Dire Straits band...and then, to continue as a solo career for the next 30 years and on. I've had the greatest of pleasures of living and working in London just as Dire Straits started over 40 years ago...and have had the greatest of privileges of enjoying Mark's music all this time into his long solo phase. Enjoy true musical genius while you still have ears to listen. So much music, so many different genres, so much genius! As a finger plucking electric guitarist he is without peer. The sounds he can produce cover the whole scope of human emotion. Mark is the musician's musician, and the guitarist's guitarist. Enjoy!
There are so many great artists from that era . Another you should get into is an Australian artist called John Farnham. Only listen to his live stuff. He is one of those rare singers who performs better live. Start by listening to his world wide hit called your the voice live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchastra. I enjoyed your reaction very much. There is a rock group that is taking the world by storm. They are called The Warning and are three young sisters from Monterey Mexico. They are phenomenal and have the most loyal fan base I have ever seen. I suggest that you jump into the deep end by reacting to one of their recent releases off of their new album coming out next month. The song is called “Automatic Sun” If you don’t like them I will eat my hat and I’m from Texas. We wear big hats ! 🤠

Yeah, rock will never die, its too real & heartfelt & epic...just like the electric blues of muddy waters, buddy guy & b.b. king will never die....lastly, mark knofler's style alone makes him great, its so unique, & he has the accent too, or the "touch", that loud/quiet dynamic within a single phrase of notes, like a classical music piano player...hes pretty much the opposite of jimmy page, but both of them are my two faves these days, for different reasons...anyway, great reaction u two.

Thank you
The studio version of this song is great; other live versions are great; but this performance is on a whole other level.
You’ve got to watch their Brothers in Arms song, have some tissues ready, it will make you cry.
My favorite song from Dire Straits Sultans Of Swing . Great reaction and thoughts for this song . The next ones from them in no particular order Brothers in Arms or Money for Nothing.
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Hi guys, thanks for a great uninterrupted reaction video, of my all time favorite band...........I actually live in Mark Knopfler's home City of Newcastle Upon Tyne, North East England, where we are known as - Geordie's -..........I'm 73 now, so i remember Dire Straits very well, and saw them 5 times live in Newcastle.......Please play more of their live performances, you won't be disappointed...........Take care.
Telegraph road is beautiful, from this concert to. Brothers in arms....Tunel of Love....any song. Ther are greatest. Mark Knophler is considerated one of the best guitarrists of all time...
The phrase you used was the same thing all of my friends and I used when we first heard this song. “I haven’t heard that before” 🔥🤘🏻😎
Knopfler an absolute master of his craft but you’ve got to take your hat off to Williams..you wont hear many drummers like him..brilliant!
He's the best.
He plays that guitar like he's ringin' a bell.
A Chuck Berry reference. Cool!
MTV in its beginning was dominated by videos of Michael Jackson and Dire Straits… I want my MTV🎶🎵🎼❤️☮️🙏
The drummer is so superb that an atomic clock can be set on it 😁
Mark Knopfler, my favourite guitarist. Thank you for reacting to this.
Please react to "Walk of life" and "Money for nothing" by Dire Straits. Along with many other brilliant songs.
The song is called “Automatic Sun”
If you don’t like them I will eat my hat and I’m from Texas. We wear big hats ! 🤠
If you liked this then you will love the live version of "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits from the "On the Night" concert. Its a musical masterpiece.
One of the best bands from that era. They were fun. Mark Knopfler can sure pick that guitar. Without a pick!
🇨🇦 IMO the Best music created, written, played or sung in the last Century, was performed between 1959 to 1989 ! 🇨🇦
Los datos leídos están mal..
COMO PUEDEN NO CONOCER ESTA BANDA NI ESTE TEMA???????😮, SON CLASICOS!!!!!!....
UNA DE LAS BANDAS MAS GRANDES Y UNO DE LOS GUITARRISTAS MAS GRANDES DE TODOS LO TIEMPOS.. SINO EL MEJOR. EN VERDAD NO LOS CONOCIAN??? , QUE HACEN AQUI??
You need to see TUNNEL OF LOVE.
Hi Glad to see that you enjoyed Saltans of swing . Another great track is " Dire Straits - Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live)" from the same gig.
If you copy and paste between the "" you will get the right video.
I was at this gig
