Phil Collins hopped on the Concorde after performing in London to get to the States. The flight took less than 3 hours! I tend to live up to the Canadian stereotype......eh??
I loved everything about this song when it came out, from the first note to the last! I still do! I didn't know what most of the words were, but I didn't care. It's so fun and catchy!
You reminded me of an old joke someone told me I was in a club, and they played the twist, so I did the twist, and then they played the locomotion, so I did the locomotion. Then they played come on Eileen and I got arrested!
The phrase 'Dexys Midnight Runners' was a kind of a nickname for some of the fans of Northern Soul in the 70s UK. they took the drug Dexedrine, a brand of dextroamphetamine used as a recreational drug among Northern soul fans to give them energy to dance all night.
A former co-worker of mine got me into this song. Whenever we were in the company vehicle, over half the time, we'd both be listening to music and singing along. Lol the chemistry.
"Dexy" was a reference to Dextroamphetamine, which is one of the two mainline treatments for ADHD. Back in the 60's, it was widely prescribed as a diet pill, as appetite loss is one of its common side effects. Speaking of which, have you ever heard the Stones' "Mother's Little Helper"? The subject of the song was ... you guessed it... Dextroamphetamine!
First time I remember hearing this song was in the movie Tommy Boy, when Richard and Tommy are driving along in Richard's beat up convertible. Sick Rammstein shirt btw 🤘🏻
The video to this song was filmed in the street my husband lived he remembers it so well also if I ever do a video on UB40 many rivers to cross I was in that video it was a pukka day we was let out from school after lunch so no school for the rest of the day happy days X
He's singing about the Sexual repression he experienced, growing up in Ireland. "And we can sing just like our fathers" is a reference that prior generations experienced the same
this is the first time ive seen the full lyrics written out where i could understand them. this is actually a fairly lusty little tune. (the band is from birmingham, england.)
Dexys are one of my favourite bands and as good as 'Eileen' is, there is so much more to them. They are from Birmingham UK. Their 1980 debut album - 'Searching for the young soul rebels' is great, 'Geno' was their first UK no.1. Kevin Rowland is the singer and writer, he's pretty intense but sincere with it. Every album takes a different direction, they are very underrated by most but if you know you know. The band's name was derived from Dexedrine, a brand of dextroamphetamine used as a recreational drug among Northern soul fans to give them energy to dance all night. Cheers.
I went out clubbin last night. They played The Twist, so I did the twist. They played Jump, so I jumped. They played Come On Eileen... I got kicked out for that one!

Dexys are dexedrine, an amphetamine coming l commonly used in the 70s and early 80s by truckers to stay awake on long runs. It's also the main ingredient in the diet pill Dexatrim.
was 12 when this dropped on the radio...have heard it, oh, about a MILLION times in the intervening years...but this is the FIRST time I've seen the lyrics!!!!! So random!!!!
So it's an '80s song from some dudes that were definitely of age in the '70s. I think even if they never said it out loud to the public, it's a double entender the lyric video kept writing Ah come on Eileen. But you know those dudes were laughing when they wrote that song and were singing I come on Eileen.
You need to react to a song from the late 70s, that is at the end of disco-beginning of New Wave, with a funky beat and a rap type vocal. Try 'Hit me with your Rhythm Stick' by Ian Dury and the Blockheads (official video if poss).
At a certain point in time sister was used as a reference to women or girls in the way as slang. Like dolls or chicks. Of course this sort of disappeared in the nineties because of the obvious confusion that it causes in that some people might think that the guy saying it means his actual sister but he’s really talking about a girl or woman that he not related to.
Love this song. Everyone's going to say you should have watched the official video but I think there are some things in it that didn't age well. 1985's flirting is 2024's aggression. I don't know, watch it and see what you think. I think it distracts from how good the song really is.
What do you call a woman with one leg longer than the other?? Eileen!! Sorry dad joke i do every time i hear it hear this song around someone i havent said it uet! 😂
If you finally ever make it to react to Pain of Salvation song, "On a Tuesday" look for a studio version, because the live versions out there are not great sounding at all. Also prefer a lyric video..lyrics are very important. The album, “The passing light of day”, which “On a Tuesday” is the opening track, is probably one of the most, if not the most, painful and personal reflective and introspective pieces of music you’ll ever hear. It is written by the band’s leader, Daniel Gildenlow, he’s the singer and main composer of the band. Back in 2014 he was admitted to hospital with an skin infection which escalated rapidly within hours to be this life threatening situation where he was being eaten alive by a flesh eating bacteria. Yes, it sounds horrendous, and he ended up being in hospital for four months, trying to unsuccessfully fight this bacteria. So this guy, who’s pretty young and fit and had all the “checks” to a long prosperous life suddenly had to face up to his own mortality and to evaluate his relationship with those he loved those around like his children, his parents, his wife and even God and all this stuff that goes through someone's mind when they are deep into such a situation and the album is all about that, so it’s a concept album, written or al least imagined to be written form a hospital bed. BTW, Daniel Gildenlow was born on June 5th 1973, so he was born “On a Tuesday”
The narrator and Eileen I think are supposed to be around the same age, and the song is really more about getting Eileen to pack up and ditch their shithole city together now that they're old enough to do so. Todd In The Shadows described it as the British Born To Run.
It’s not an exact match but this in 82 was a more subtle approach to getting a girl than 77’s Only The Good Die Young. Skipping seduction and going for what you want seemed to be a common theme in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Both were fun at the school and church dances until the chaperones listened to the actual words.
Denys is short for Dexedrine, which were originally slimming pills, stopped your appetite and made you an athlete, but the come down was a monster. In other words…..speed.
Fun Fact: When this hit #1 in the US, it knocked Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" off the top spot.
And was replaced the very next week by Beat It.
