  • ‘Reacting To American Gospel: Christ Alone Documentary’
Today’s video is a big one! We’re responding to American Gospel, the documentary that has been very impactful to many of you. It has made waves and evoked lots of discussion within the Christian community. If you’ve been keeping up with our faith journey, we’ve shared how we’ve been re-examining some things with regards to the hyper-charismatic movement (see our video “why we’re no longer hyper charismatic”). The first time we watched American Gospel a while ago, we didn’t like it all that much for a few reasons. Now that we’re in a bit of a different place, we thought we’d re-watch it and give our honest thoughts. Have our views of the film changed? Watch and find out! And let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

Word of faith is flawed but it is the closest to the truth. Just because you found liars and false teachers doesn't mean the fire of the Holy Spirit doesn't exist. Don't give up on charismatics, just find some that preach the full gospel, not just the "achieve your dreams" fake stuff.

      Paul and Morgan,
I always appreciate your approach to these things, and am so glad to see and hear how the Lord has been gradually opening your eyes to some deceptions and damaging beliefs. Though I really like this documentary, I can definitely see your point of caution you made at the beginning. Overall, I feel that this documentary does really well to expose the "American Gospel" that so many in our country are following. When I watched it for the first time, I was in tears when the Gospel was explained. Even though I am 22, and have been a Christian most of my life, I felt like I was hearing the Gospel for the first time. I am thankful for that, especially because I used to feel like the Gospel was boring, and that it was old news and that I could "move on" to other exciting things (if you know what I mean) because I had been a Christian and gone to church all my life. I feel like, sometimes, what is emphasized in what we are taught in church, and in our American Christian culture has something to do with that. Though, I can't blame all of that on those things, but that is my observation. Hearing the Gospel be re-presented to me helped to to see Jesus, and what He has done for me in a new light where it isn't "boring", and that it still applies to me, even as a Christian. Though I am a new creation in Christ, I have learned that I still need to always be reminded of Jesus, and what He has done because life is not all roses and butterflies. Morgan, I started tearing up when you were talking about what you have gone through emotionally over recent years, and how the Lord has worked in that area of your life to help you to see that your emotions do not have to be dictated by your life circumstances! That is a big one that God has been helping me with for a while in this season of my life. So, I feel you on that point! Praise God for what He has done! He is good, faithful, and is in the details of our lives.
Anyway, that is probably enough rambling on... God bless you guys! (PLEASE do a collab with Melissa Dougherty! That would be awesome!)
      Abbey :)

With healing I believe it's always God's will to heal anyone of any silent. Here is why. Scriptures say Jesus us the same yesterday today and forever. And there us not a single person in the gospels that came to jesus to be healed and he did not heal them. But not every person sick came to jesus. And also I'm sure that many of those people had sin in their lives. So sin did not stop Jesus from healing people. Plus the scriptures say by his (Jesus') stripes Jesus healed us!

I watched American Gospel in 2019 and it radically changed my view of the gospel. It opened my eyes to how I viewed Christ and my surface-level Christianity. While i am not reformed, this documentary was the gut punch I needed from God to open my eyes to my prosperity view of His grace. Thanks for being open & honest in your faith. We are all on a journey as Christian’s, and I am for sure still learning. Praise God He is so patient and kind in our sanctification ❤️.

I grew up in Joel’s Lakewood church and have had a hard time explaining how Joel isn’t obeying scripture but since I was probably 8 years old I knew there was something wrong. Now that I am 18 and have studied scripture a lot more and gone to a church that preaches truth I feel strongly that what Joel teaches is misleading.

You should listen to Costis podcast “For the Gospel”, It is very encouraging. Also most reformed preachers and many of them in the documentary don’t preach that we are still wretched, they do however teach on our wretchedness without Christ but also how we have been made new and no longer have to be wretched because of Christ’s finished work on the cross. A documentary can only capture so much of an individual’s beliefs, I implore you guys to watch if you haven’t already some of these pastor’s sermons maybe even on specific topics you want to learn more about or aren’t quite sure of yet.

You all did a great job on the break down of this documentary!
I was raised in the Pentecostal church (dad is a pastor). Over the last two years, our family has had to confront some of the false teachings from people like Bill Johnson and Kris Valloton that are being adopted in our denomination. American Gospel was one of the films we watched as we were researching the Word of Faith/Hyper-Charismatic movement. It made a big impact on me.
I still believe that the gifts of the Spirit are relevant and active today and that believers should pray for healing. But all things must be done in accordance with the Word and acknowledging that it’s not by our power, but Christ’s.
God bless you both as you continue to walk in your journey with Him!

Hey Paul & Morgan, as someone who grew up in the Pentecostal charismatic church, and continued attending until December 2020, I can see why the reformed/Calvinist movement seems to be so far in the opposite direction. God, in his Grace saved me in August 2020, and I began continuously listening to WOF/Pentecostal teachings, but the difference was I was reading the Bible and had a new hunger and desire for the truth. As I studied more, it became more and more apparent that this movement wasn’t concerned with exposition of God’s word, or teaching the Gospel but instead giving out promises on behalf of God. I was listening to sermon after sermon for a period of three months and i watched the American gospel one night… and realized within all my years of attending this kind of church, and especially studying the last 3 months, I never heard the gospel and I wasn’t really sure what it was. Even as I was seeking truth those first three months of being saved, the teachers I listened to didn’t proclaim the gospel…. They shared a need for warfare prayers, miracles, decreeing and declaring God’s promises & they taught that we have authority over the devil &demons ….after watching the documentary I began to wonder what the gospel truly was…. I began praying that God would reveal it to me. That’s when a sermon by Paul Washer came up on my feed. He preached about Romans 3…. And my eyes were opened for the first time to the truth of God’s word. Since that first reformed sermon, I began to listen to other notable reformed teachers like John MacArthur, Alistair Begg, Voddie Bauchaum, Steve Lawson.. etc. but they were all Calvinist, and while I had never heard expository preaching like this in my life, I wrestled with the idea that God would somehow elect some and not others unto salvation. Steve Lawson described becoming a Calvinist like running into a brick wall… that’s how I felt. I kept running at it and hitting it, and getting back up, and running again… I didn’t want to believe that God decides that, I didn’t want to believe that we have no free will, and that some loved ones will never enter the kingdom…. But God in His sovereignty allowed the Holy Spirit to continue to illuminate scripture after scripture. Now, over a year after being truly born again, I consider myself Calvinist.
I know the wretched mentality seems really daunting and wrong. I thought so too when I was first introduced to reformed theology. But now, I recognize, that truthfully the only thing in this life, I deserve is death. To quote Voddie Bauchaum “i deserve to die in my sleep because of what I thought, said, and did yesterday” but God in His great mercy, gives new mercies every single day, He gives us hope & a future, he gives us the opportunity to proclaim the cross with every breathe.

Amen!!! Praise the Lord!!! The wretched mentality isn't about living in condemnation or denying the saving power of God in Jesus and His transforming us by His Spirit through sanctification. Its about the awe inspiring goodness of God's grace to us because even now in our flesh there is no good in us (Romans 7:18), and yet we are saved, called children of God, and are partakers of the righteousness of Christ Jesus. And Romans 9 is always where my mind first goes to on election, does the potter not have the right to make of one lump of clay a vessel for honour and a vessel for dishonour? Thank you for sharing your testimony!!!

I think American Gospel is absolutely spot on with regard to everything, especially how much we fall short in comparison to Jesus, this is an important element in order to keep us grounded & on tract, always being fully aware of the price that Christ paid on the cross. So many have fallen due to weak preaching including the preacher’s/pastor’s themselves, becoming proud & full of themselves, clearly forgetting their purpose through Christ. I’m glad that they also name the false preacher’s/pastor’s, as Christian’s we are called to judge inside the church in a loving & biblical manner, just not outside the church, that is only for God. American Gospel is a brilliant documentary & will certainly help those that are searching for answers to so many confusing questions 😊

I watched American Gospel 2.5 years ago; back then I was so touched by this movie, probably because I was so young and tired of service-level youth christianity, mentioned in the movie ( even-though in Baptist churchers the situation isn’t better at all, just rules are way stricter). I was really hungry for the Gospel. I am so thankful for them, because through that movie Holy Spirit touched me and I’ve understood the Gospel like never before, Christ really became the center of my life. (I was already saved but my faith became firmer)
However, as I started watching those reformed preachers, I noticed that I constantly felt guilty, my anxiety and depression started coming back; I became extremely self-righteous and developed victim mentality. Let’s be honest, many of the things they point out in this movie are true, but, unfortunately, those people cannot see their own problems that are huge!! Self-righteousness and legalism are extremely wide spread in those circles, as well as religious abuse and control…

But sometimes the Calvinist teaching can lead me to works based salvation. I know they don’t ever say it’s works based. But I really struggle with becoming legalistic.
I’ve learned to put my Bible first- and someone’s interpretation second. Praying for God to give discernment when I read His word.

I have never seen the reformed church discourage personal holiness. Believing I am WRETCHED and SAVED and made a new creation, and declaring my flesh is WRETCHED and DEPRAVED but Jesus has overcome sin and death does not mean there is no power in our salvation, it’s a declaration of HOW MUCH power there is in our salvation. Respectfully, I think some may have a certain perception of what the doctrine of total depravity means and you think they are saying something they are not. I have similar reactions to things other people say sometimes, so I say this to hopefully encourage you that it isn’t what that means and anyone who uses it to mean that is twisting it for their own purposes, but it isn’t what this means at all.

Disclaimer: My intentions are not to start a debate or bash your views! Rather just bring another perspective respectfully or perhaps start a discussion if so inclined 😊🙏
I used to go to a reformed/calvinist church where they taught the TULIP concept and drilled into our heads we are totally depraved sinners, that even if we have accepted Christ and confessed He is Lord [John 3:16] we are still wretched and should live, breathe, and meditate on the fact that we are so wretched and that we did not choose God but He chose us and for that-we are the elite [yes, they called themselves the elite] which is a very 'holier than thou' outlook
Yes, we are sinners, yes we are wretched! But as P&M had brought up, we are a new creation in Christ and that was never preached in the church I attended. And while yes, God chose us first-it was taught that there is the election and the people in the church are elite and any other church in the town was preaching false doctrine. They also taught that it wasn't by our own free will that we had to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior but rather He just chose just some of us....so, so twisted. John Calvin, Piper, and Spurgeon were mentioned and quoted quite often in the church and from my perspective of the reformed theology (specifically calvinism) I have only ever seen it presented as following a man's interpretation of God's word-most often looked by those three men. (And Im not saying they cant have any good points/truths btw!)
I looked up the definition of total depravity via calvinism because I didnt want to quote it wrong and it said "This means people cannot independently choose God. They cannot save themselves. God must intervene to save people." This was what was taught and preached, that we have no free will and God chooses the elite and that He sent his son Jesus to die only for the people He chooses..Im not saying we have power to save ourselves, but the bible tells us we must choose to confess Jesus is our Lord. I just dont see how total depravity or the teaching of TULIP in calvinism is scriptural and Im not trying to speak for P&M but these are just my thoughts as I agreed with what Morgan had to say on it 😊

@@cieragraves1395 Hey sister want to encourage you to meditate on this verse. “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:44. The truth is we are by nature sinners and do not by nature desire the things of God, and without God bringing us to Him we would never choose Him or His ways ourselves. It is He who draws us to Him however we still have a part in it as far as repentance goes because we must confess and we must turn from our sin to God, but even repentance is granted by God (2 Timothy 2:24-26). The Gospel isn’t all easy to digest many things our minds can’t fathom but we have to remember God’s ways are not ours nor are His thoughts, we can never fully understand God but He does illuminate His word to us through His Holy Spirit and if we ask He will reveal.

Your hair looks beautiful Morgan! I noticed immediately!
As far as the documentary is concerned, I think it is a great illustration of how out of balance the church is. We have 45,000 different Christian denominations for a reason… and that reason isn’t because we’re unified under Christ, which is of course what He asks of us. My main take away is that we have to truly be seeking truth around the character of God. A lot of Christians that I know focus heavily of God’s love, while my background makes me focus on God’s judgment of me… it’s out of balance. God is love and justice, not just one or the other.

I’m just discovering your channel! I watched a couple of videos…and I like you guys! Love your hair Morgan, it looks so healthy! I love your approach to the diverse social issues…My first church was very charismatic and I loved that, very focused on the Holy Spirit (and Jesus of course), lots of manifestations, etc. And as I grew in my faith God taught me that the fruit of the Spirit is more important than the manifestations… long story short, I loved the American gospel documentary, it was eye-opening and I totally get Costi Hinn’s point of view. Anyway, you guys are doing great! Blessings 😍

I so badly needed to see this video. Morgan, talking about your emotions and the highs and lows being determined by prophecies and success or trials hit home on a whole new level. And while I have been seeing this more and more, you both explained it so well. You two are amazing in the way that you do love God the father and genuinely want him and I appreciate so much seeing people like this.
Thank you both for being you!

Great video! I’ve been watching you guys for several years and it’s so cool to see you really journey to honor God in your understanding of scripture!
American Gospel was a major component in my own journey to true repentance and salvation. I do really love and appreciate this film.
Since being saved I have definitely become reformed. I also come from a more word-of-faith background and I had a lot of the same concerns.
I just wanted to chime in on what you mentioned about reformed-thinking being more melancholy and self-abasing.
It definitely might feel that way in contrast to where you’ve been theologically before, but that is actually something that many of my favorite speakers (included in the film) preach heavily against.
The truth is, (you know of course) that we are sinners.
We are wretched sinners deserving of God’s wrath- but knowing and understanding this is simply one of the steps in understanding who God is and what Christ did on the cross actually means.
And you are right, when we are saved, we have hope of glory in Christ Jesus! The Holy Spirit gives us joy and a peace only Christians can have. We aren’t to remain in that wretchedness. We can understand the truth and still be absolutely elated at our being new creations. We still are called to be Holy as He is holy, having repented. We’re not to live in sin and in sorrow. Paul Washer is very eloquent on this idea.
I think their focus on it in the film is due to their thinking that many watching the film very possibly could not be saved at all, (such as myself) and so they go through the gospel.
Just thought I’d chip in even though no one asked haha! Love you guys!!

Also I’m sure you’ve heard this but even the term reformed can become distracting, haha!
The truth is, the majority of those in the “reformed” lane simply have the utmost desire to be biblical. It refers of course to the Reformation, where Catholic dogmatism was abandoned when regular people were actually able to read the Bible plain and simple for themselves. They became biblical!
They endeavor as much as possible to interpret scripture the way it was meant to be interpreted.
They care not add to or taken away from scripture, which is prevalent in so many churches today. All of the folks they called out in the film have majorly taken scripture out of its true context in order to build their own gospel, their own Jesus.

I was raised Pentecostal and in the last 4 years have found myself under reformed doctrine. These last 4 years have been the most amazing years in my walk with Jesus. I am 41 years old now, so it was for many many many years (asked “Jesus into my heart”at 5) of feeling that I wasn’t connecting to God because I wasn’t feeling the “fire” and I have to have more faith, do more and work harder, be better. It wasn’t until I found a church that really studied the Bible, line by line, that I found my freedom in Christ. And I can tell you, We don’t walk in this constant condemning self talk of what wretched horrible sinners we are. It’s recognizing how gracious the gift Christ has given us in the light of our wretchedness. How far He has brought us out of the darkness. Because that is just a start to even fully (if ever) grasp how great and endless his Grace and mercy go. We are a new creation and we celebrate that! Knowing what we were and what we were saved from just magnifies the love in my heart for our Lord. I love him more than I ever had or even thought possible. Coming out of the charismatic church and into this new one was like being saved all over again but even better! Thank you guys so much for your review of the movie, it was very well done and with a level head! Refreshing!

I am 70 years old. I have been a christian for 43 years. We do grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are not growing and learning you need to change churches if you live, in an area that gives you better options. Here is the key point...Listen... Take advantage of the internet resource God has given us. Listen to great solid bible teaching online in addition to your church. You want expository teaching. Research what that is if the term is not familiar to you. God centered preaching, not man centered.

    **Extremely long comment**
Personally, I think you guys executed this topic beautifully!! I truly feel this was a well balanced viewpoint of the documentary and one that seeks after understanding and unity rather than debates and division.
When I sat down and watched this movie with my friends a few years ago, I was unaware beforehand that it leaned definitely on the reformed/calvinistic standpoint. A large part of the group that watched it with me were/are calvinists and came out agreeing 100% with everything the documentary touched on. Myself (who is neither hyper charismatic nor reformed/calvinist) have gone to both types of churches in the past, met people on both sides, etc...and came out thinking, I can agree and respect some points they made while other points I felt weren't approached gracefully and have more harsher undertones to their speculations.
As Paul has, I have watched many of Todd White's sermons and street healings--there are many things I could touch on but we'd be here a while so Ill try to make my point quickly. While I have no doubt God can and has healed people today, and that He is a miracle worker-I am still very weary of the teaching that God WILL ALWAYS heal someone as long as you pray harder or pray a certain way...that is us trying to have our will be done rather than God's will be done. We are to take everything back to the word of God and there are many things I personally appreciate about specifically Todd White~he is not perfect (as none of us are) but I do not believe he needs to step down or be called a false preacher as this documentary calls for.
As you guys have stated, and I had to figure out, this documentary is very calvinist based. I want to be careful how I word this as my intentions are not to create division, but rather bring to light something I see dismissed a lot by the reformed group. John Calvin was the founder of 'calvinism'. Calvinism is the following of John Calvin's own interpretation of the bible and I see a lot of the reformed refer to themselves as calvinists vs/over christians [which means Christ follower]. To me, it's almost idolizing that title or label because you follow a certain preaching or teacher. If not careful, it can lead us to follow a MAN rather than God and place our faith in a MAN who was not perfect and cannot save us. Jesus is the ONLY way, truth, and the life. Im not saying calvinists don't have or know Christ-and certainly is not my place to say...but I have deep concerns with this label as to me it's very similar to following the catholic pope and placing one's faith in a religious MAN. With this said, it's hard for me to see this documentary call all of these people false preachers (there are indeed false preachers in this movie) but we need to have discernment between striking out all preachers when the standpoint again, comes from the side of following a preacher who was not perfect..and imo, someone to be weary of and take his teachings back to the word of God to see if they align...
There is a place for righteous judgement, but it is not our place to condemn everyone because there's some teachings we disagree with.
I was sweating when I first clicked on the video but I really appreciated yalls comments and concerns in this!! I believe it was a very biblically based take on it all. 🙏

    • @johannastromberg1224
      @johannastromberg1224 2 роки тому +3

I really appreciate your well thought out comment and do not think you come across as creating division.
I do absolutely agree that we should never become a follower of simply a man. We are above all things Christians and therefore followers of Christ.
Being a Calvanist myself, I can agree that I have seen churches elevate tradition to a unhealthy level 100%!! It's a big concern of mine. However it usually doesn't actually have anything to do with John Calvin or his teachings.
      So why the label Calvanists?
It simply makes it easier. Most denominations in America can be tracked back to their European roots. Presbyterians came from the UK while the christain Reformed Church came from the Netherlands. They have the same theology but come from different parts of the world. By calling themselves Calvanists, it makes it more simple because today there's lots of reformed denominations. There's Presbyterian church of America (PCA) Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), American Reformed Church (ARC) and United Reformed (URC). Believe it or not, there's even more! Lol 😆
Labes help us categorize things. That's a big reason we call ourselves Calvanists.

Amazing video paul and Morgan! I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share.
This is extremely personal to me. My grandmother died very young of cancer. Many people came to her on her death bed to tell her she needed to pray and have more faith. Well, it didn't happen. After after 4 long years she died at 63. I've lost many dear friends to cancer, had multiple friends struggle with infertility, had multiple friends bury children including my own sister and this kind of teaching is from the pit of hell. It creates terrible heartache and pain. I think it is abusive. Can God heal? YES! NOTHING CAN STAND IN THE WAY OF GOD'S Will. However us wee men do not know God's will.
Suffering can also be very beautiful and bring huge glory to God. I had a dear friend's father die of cancer. It was a brutal battle. Yet, God gave him so much strength. It was the most beautiful testimony I have ever witnessed. He was constantly preaching about the glory of the Lord. Even when he lost the ability to speak, he would write. He told us this is God's cancer and may He be praises through it. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord.
That is what real beautiful God honoring faith looks like. It was beautiful. You would never experience this in the word of faith movement. May we have the additude of Jobe.
Blessings to you all. Thank you for a wonderful video. ❤❤

That’s interesting… I didn’t see the documentary like that at all! I saw it as: God loves you, not because you’re amazing, but because He is. I think they needed to talk about our sinful nature because that’s the whole base of the cross. That’s the need for a savior. Then you move on of course, but if I think that you can’t explain the Gospel without talking about that.
But it was interesting hearing your perspective and how your experience has helped you change the way you see it.

I’m so extremely glad y’all were able to look at it through a different lense this time and see it in a different light. You don’t have to agree with it 100% and I wouldn’t expect you to if you’re not reformed. However, I do think the documentary brings a lot of bad theology to light that (myself included as a Christian of many years) I was just completely unaware of for soooo long- that I no longer want to be any part of. This definitely has been a help to my walk so much. As a side also, the wretched side of it helps me understand all the more how much salvation from Jesus was necessary because I was never able to accomplish it on my own. I’m so thankful for His love because I’m not able to be perfect- and that’s what separates real Christianity out is that we don’t have to and can’t be! It’s so nice to rely on Christ’s sacrifice and perfection instead of trying to attempt it on my own. Hope that makes sense! God bless! ❤️🥰

Today's church is ethier charismatic, doesn't believe in miracles or gets off the deep end. I chose to seek the Lord and ask him which church I should go to and I had a dream back in 2020 of a church in Texas and I met the pastor in my dream! I am now going to that church! I believe that we are also, so afraid of how Jesus can work in our lives because of people in the church that hurt others with false teachings. The church I am going to now is non denom and our Pastor actually acknowledges that we only follow the bible! It's a hard thing to find a Non denominational Pastor that will only go with what the bible says.

The film was getting the gospel right. Talking about the wretchedness of man is needed in order to understand and appreciate the mercy of God. They weren't saying to live life feeling condemned, as I think at one point Romans 8:1 was even quoted on the screen. But it is biblical for Christians to be poor in spirit and mourn over our sin.

I love both of the documentation. I think they are both great to new believers, especially Americans that are in the word of faith movement or prosperity gospel. Even though many were more reformed, I don't remember seeing any of them pushing that & we shouldn't divide over non essentials (maybe I should watch again because it's been a while & I may not be remembering right). I used to listen to only Steven Furtick when I decided to fully live for the Lord & these documentaries woke me up & that I needed to read the Bible for myself & how important it is to read in context. It also explained the gospel beautifully. So happy that you've gotten to that point with your walk...I'm currently struggling with it so thank you for sharing! It wasn’t anything personal, but I have a lot of friends and family all mixed up in to that movement and it was just really upsetting to me. I praise the Lord you guys are moving out of that now, hallelujah!
I am glad you revisited American Gospel! When I first watched the movie I had no idea what Calvinism/reformed theology was and I remember agreeing with 100% of the film (2 years later and I lean reformed/Calvinist lol)
I was never in the hyper Charismatic Movement myself, but I had two really good friends and my husband’s step sister that attended Bethel Supernatural School of Ministry. I remember one of my friends coming back from school and feeling like they were so different and not in a good way. That’s when I started researching bethel/the NAR/WOF movement. I stumbled upon Lindsay Davis’ testimony (she actually went to Bethel Supernatural School of Ministry with my husband’s step sister ironically) and eventually American Gospel. It really changed the way I flippantly listened to these church’s music without ever knowing their dangerous teachings. And seeing the unbiblical effect that it has had on my friends and family has shown to me that this movement is heretical and false and I do not say that lightly.
I will definitely be praying for you guys as you continue. Thank you for being real! Lord bless you!

Well yes we don't carry the weight of guilt around as though we are condemned but we certainly should carry the knowledge that that's who we are without Jesus and His sacrifice. And it's scriptural. See what Paul said "Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worst of them."
    1 Timothy 1:15 ERV
Notice that Paul didn't say "I was..." he said "I am...". Personally I think that this understanding is the source of a constant pour of love for Jesus. That me, a sinner like me, has hope because of Him. I don't live in sin anymore thanks to Him. It's a constant source of love, admiration, peace, hope, joy, excitement...name it. Praise God.
Thank you both for this though. There was a lot of honesty in your interview... That's priceless. God bless you both. ❤️

I was also so concerned with the way some of these people preached, and how a lot of them are all about money that never sat right with me. I used to watch Todd White videos too and now I finally see it was false. Thank you for talking about the fact that just because we are Christians we won’t always be blessed or have all of our prayers answered, and God is always worthy of all of our love and prayers. Plus just look at the Israelites, and how God provided for them for 40 years but they still complained constantly about what they didn’t have instead of thanking God for all he was doing for them! I struggled with being told to pray over and over again for a Christian husband. But I have to accept the fact that God does not owe me anything! I only need to worship and love him no matter what happens in my life! Thank you so much for helping me realize that. I had a lot of hyper charismatics in my life from my church and I would get angry with God. That was so wrong

Bethel like “worship” “our “ worship felt work based a pastor would more then not interrupt the worship and basically say worship harder bring heaven down. It was exhausting. I identified with What Alisa Childers said with pebbles in the shoe. Yes “praying” more for hours a day , tithing more. When I heard American Gospel that I am a wretched sinner I found freedom. My worship changed to yes God only you, as apposed to where I was “wielding” power of God. There is a freedom that I can’t but God can. The reading of my Bible has changed so much. I am so grateful for the American Gospel it really shed a light on the pebbles. Im really grateful you did another video, I had seen your first video. I haven’t wanted to say anything to my old church family or to others, I didn’t want to disrespect or hurt anyone. But I do agree I was either puffed up like I was good, or in dispair that I would not get it right. Now when I pray I have to trust GOD and his plan and will and not weather I have “prayed” right or other stuff to wield the power. Bottom line I think the film was pretty right on with what they exposed and dived in.

There’s a huge difference between Believing Christ can heal and believing He has already healed you on the cross! Many of us are just too self-righteous to admit we don’t have this child like type of faith. There’s nothing shameful about not having a bold faith, it’s not the basis of our salvation nor the reason we’re loved by God; But I think trying to deny that we struggle with believing is extremely unhelpful and prideful. For us, Christians, it’s extremely important to face our true state, without being extremely genuine it’s impossible to see the change and Glory of God in our lives..
P.S. Most people don’t realize the difference between Hope and Faith

Thank you for doing this. My hubby and me watched the documentary several times. I agree with you on the stating the Calvinist point of view upfront. Do watch the Christ Crucified that follows, it is enlightening as well. While we attend an Assembly of God church presently I don't consider myself to be Pentecostal/Charasmatic anymore but yet still believe God can perform miracles, heal and impart gifts of Holy Sprit as He wills because He is after God. :)

I agree with most of what y’all said. But what do we make of Jesus? Jesus healed everyone he prayed for. He never turned anyone away or said no. What are your thoughts on Jesus and healing everyone who he encountered in the New Testament?

The bible has a bunch of nonsense.. talking donkeys , zombies , lake of fire .
Jesus was all about loving your neighbor as yourself . That's it.
Forget about all the other atanic bible thumping

Miracles are not performed by every believer in the Bible. They are more rare. Keeping in mind that Jesus is the Son of God and has authority that we don't. Miracles are often used to show that God is with a prophet. They are used to point people to the Truth and repentance. If miracles are the main focus people tend to just focus on that, and the truth can take a back seat. We can still ask God for healing, but the truth is death and sickness still happen to believers, even strong believers. God promises a far more beautiful future but until then we will have trials and everyone is appointed to die once. Hope this helps.💛

I'm blessed so much that I have been taught the truth for the most part. But with God all things are possible... I feel like at 54 I was raised really conservative and I honestly am still learning God's Word daily. I think I almost was raised or in church that was closer to the other extreme at times. Or I took it that way. But actually it has become clearer to me at how much more exciting life is in Christ! I think when we turn to God and learn more and more it is awesome. I knew not to watch prosperity gospel. But also in the extreme conservative side... When we switched to the Christian church and the movement to using more contemporary music we learned a huge freedom too.I live very close to Lexington, Ky too
In Ky I will say in the last few years churches like Southland, SE, and NE are really following Jesus.. The truth..So blessed to see this too

Thanks for your measured and wise response to this video! Since you mentioned Calvinism, what do you feel about it? I’ve been a Christian just about my whole life, and just recently found out what they believe after looking for a new church. I was shocked.

Hi there! Thanks for making this. I've watched AG (or perhaps a part of it) and shared it with some friends. I'm a part of a charismatic megachurch in Singapore.
Agreed with your point somewhere in 7:40 about swinging the other extreme, an over weightage of a person's wretchedness which, apart from grace and Jesus's good news, is nothing but doom. My view though is that the intent to offend is helpful as it grounds the hyper charismatic believers away from where they typically are- hyper grace, which says 'I'm becoming good, I'm becoming sanctified and I'm really good. Why be such a downer?' Whenever I brought up questions on justification with my charismatic friends, I had no way to drive conviction if I took the pacific path- i.e. I know I'm saved because I see God's sanctifying grace happening in me, and they would respond 'Me too, I don't see where we differ' and there would be no effect, and it provokes no examination.
I found that it could be because the leaning toward 'all things are possible with God' lives strongly within charismatics, and thus offending them with total depravity doctrine hits differently- since no one really drove that home in the upfront for charismatics. Sin is typically described as the negative things that brings about curses in our lives rather than a serious, eternal death sentence on our souls.
That being said, the over emphasis of wretchedness is a problem too.
Although, I tend to think that it necessarily has to be there. After all, if one can't handle it, then they can't have a completely Christian perspective about themselves and about Jesus.

I really appreciate you two and the work you are doing. Its very inspiring to see Christians standing up and speaking the truth. I only stumbled on you videos for the first time today and I got stuck watching several episodes and I pray God continue to strengthen you. Nevertheless , Some of your comments in this particular video doesn't really sound consistent with the trend I have noticed so far- I totally agree with you that trials and tribulations will come as long as we are in this body and 'Jesus did not promise us a life free of it' however through it all we are more than conquerors, we are overcomers. For examples - yes sickness will come but I don't think its God's will for us to remain sick- i think its an opportunity to build our faith in that area and overcome- Yes we might not always get it right but we keep pressing and getting more revelation from Go. I do not see it different from sin, the grace Jesus brought us has empowered to overcome temptation and sin , so that when they come we can stay on-top of it. So if you are encouraging people to live a Godly, holy life-as you have in several of your videos, why can't they be encouraged to use the same faith to overcome other trials of life. Its the same faith. Matthew 9:5, For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

Idk if it’s just me but something looks a lil different about Morgan’s hair and it looks so good!
But anyways, have you guys watched the second American gospel film? It’s about progressive Christianity and I feel like it’s more theologically heavy and deep. I highly recommend it and hope y’all do a reaction to that one too!

I love "American Gospel: Christ Alone" because I love Jesus and the true Gospel. American Gospel tells the truth! There is a true Gospel that leads to heaven and a false gospel that leads to hell. I praise God that He has used this documentary in a powerful way to open peoples' eyes to the false gospel Paul warns about in places like the book of Galatians.

I had the same leg issue. It also caused scoliosis. When I was in a church camp, somebody prayed for my legs and I've got healed in a couple of minutes, and even my spine became straight. Maybe it was not a serious issue, but that was a very powerful experience for me. Still, I am waiting for my eyes to be healed for almost 20 years... So, I don't know why, but God knows. :D

Totally agree with you on wishing they had been more upfront about their Calvinist viewpoint. I'm not Calvinist or Arminian either, so sometimes watching those types of videos is a bit... interesting, to say the least. But goodness, what a blessing to watch you two grow further in your faith, and really just come right to God's Word! Love you both!

I've never heard of the film before, but I appreciate the take you guys had on it. Curious your take partially coved here on the topic of motivational or psychological preachers. 🤔 Would Life church be one of such example? Also so want to see a Morgan Rant channel! Yes, I understand not being quick to jump, but culture seems to move so fast. Why not be full of spirit? What do you guys mean by saying have hope and be free? I believe Paul could get on a rant about that! 😎 Let us see it!

I'm so thankful you guys watched it and have been growing in trusting God's Word over the words of men. Like Justin Peters says, if God will deliver you from judgment, He will deliver you from deception!
I understand why you have that criticism for Justin Peters, but I've seen him in person and his attitude about it all is really quiet and humble. Check out his Strange Fire conference talks, the guy is pretty meek (he'd get all quiet when people laughed at his jokes lol). So maybe he's actually just awkward and it comes across as harsh? Gotta give thanks for the flak the guy takes daily

May God take all the way on your journey to the truth. Thanks for your honesty.
I will like to add: without a proper understanding of your sinfulness, a deep appreciation of God's holiness, we cannot truly live a holy life. And hence, I think the emphasis of those whom you labelled 'Calvinists, Reformed' is in order.
    God bless you.

I am so grateful that God has opened your eyes to the Truth of who God is! I pray many will also have their eyes opened too! What we believe must be grounded in the Word of God, and His Holy Spirit never contradicts what the Bible says! And God gets all of the glory in the end!!!!!!!
