  • ‘Is Joel Osteen And His Preaching Really Unbiblical? ft. Melissa Dougherty’
We were recently on a car ride with two fellow Christians, and the topic of Joel Osteen came up. One of the Christians spoke pretty strongly against Joel’s teachings, while the other seemed to give Joel the benefit of the doubt and said he doesn’t deserve some of the criticism/ hate he gets. So in today’s video we’re doing an honest critique of Joel Osteen’s preaching, with the intentions of answering questions like ‘how hard should we be on Joel Osteen?’ And ‘is his teaching Biblical?’ Thanks for watching, comment your thoughts below!

I agree with Melissa about J.O. 100%... I was a Jehovah's Witness for many years, once I came out of that cult I listened to J.O and Joyce Meyer's. The more I read the Bible in CONTEXT, the more I recognized false preaching and teachers. I am always amazed at people who "claim" to be a Christian but don't read the Bible and don't know scripture. Great video, awesome subject. Thank you. 🥰😍🤩🤩😍🥰 (I hit the subscribe button)

I've been a believer for 36 years, I'm a psychologist and been a missionary in Islamic countries for over a decade... I can't say I find Mellisa has a good grip on 'relationship' with Jesus. Belief and truth are highly important, but the Western church has followed the culture much more than they understand and the post reformation and post enlightenment culture absolutely in making apologetics, preaching and truth APART from relationship, community love and belonging utmost. The truth of the matter is, our character is changed in the right hemisphere of the brain, that's where we become more like Christ and all of the practices Melissa and others advocate are left brain actions, like more Bible study, more groups, more preaching to change people. Not that these things are not important, but we focus n this to the exclusion of the latter. We act instantly from our right hemisphere (which operates faster than conciousness) before our left hemisphere then processes the information and we put it through rational processes. That means that to change our character, we need to experience Jesus person to person and others mind to mind to change our actual character... Which is what Jesus is all about and why he spent so much time, in person with his followers.

I love the part where Melissa brought up that things like drugs and alcohol can make you feel better in the moment. When it comes to speakers like Osteen, whether it's malicious or well intended, they ultimately teach a different gospel. They bank on people's desires for success and love but only give the neverending "your breakthrough is just around the corner". They give you that false hope which tends to just worsen their listeners anxiety and depression when things don't work out.
I also love that you brought up balance of grace and truth. That's so important. One of my favorite moments in the gospels is when Jesus tells the pharasies they do well tithing (which they're supposed to do) but they forget "justice mercy and faithfulness".

It seems to me that He saves us from our own folly here on earth as well as hell. I agree with you, though. Jesus’s sacrifice has to really MEAN something in relationship to our sin and death or why die at all? Why rise again? Why suffer spiritual separation from God as well as physical death? It doesn’t make sense unless sin has both temporal and eternal consequences.

This was a really balanced discussion, thank you. I was also in the New Age prior to getting saved 9 years ago. Joel Osteen was one of the first preachers I listened to as a new believer and I remember being open-mouthed, because what I heard was EXACTLY what I had just been delivered from in the New Age. The thing is, as you point out, there is a loose Biblical precedent for a lot of these teachings but with the essence (which is Christ), removed. E.g. the Bible does say in the Book of Proverbs "as a man thinks, in his heart so is he" and "the power of life and death is in the tongue". And Jesus said in Matthew 21:22 that "whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive". There are other similar Scriptures as well, but the point is, these Scriptures are to be taken in the context of a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. So as we go through the process of sanctification and become more familiar with the will of God through His word, then the things we pray for will be things that line up with His will, and as it says in 1 John 5, whatever we ask for in accordance with His will, we know we have. Joel Osteen and the like have omitted Christ from the equation and preach just the motivational stuff which is exactly what the New Age does. Satan is the biggest counterfeiter of all and the best counterfeit is to be as close to the original as possible. Melissa what you shared about the New Thought concept of sin being negative thinking and so repentance from this sin links you right in to Joel's teachings, was really insightful and useful. All in all, this was an excellent video. Balanced and respectful whilst uncompromising towards the Word. Well done guys!

Lakewood's online Monday Night Bible Study goes much deeper into Scripture than his Sunday services. I have been listening to his sermons for years and have been greatly encouraged, which is his style of preaching. There are things I agree with in the discussion and other things I respectfully disagree with as well; however, one thing I feel maybe was misunderstood was Joel's opening, " This is my Bible, I am what it says I am and I can do what it says I can do... " and so on. This true because the Bible identifies who God is and who we are in Christ. Perhaps give a listen to their Monday Night Bible Study one day, I think it's something to consider. I do like what Paul said that Joel wants to leave the congregation with an expectant attitude because we need to be encouraged. Joel's sister Lisa Comes was unable to have children for years, but remained expectant and continued to honor the Lord in that difficult season and the Lord honored her obedience and brought her three children through adoption. She has spoken of her testimony in her sermons and I hope y'all could research the church more :) Interesting discussion y'all! Blessings Paul and Morgan

I agree with you that it’s no longer the gospel when you’re leaving out the hell part and only focusing on the good-feeling stuff. His dad, or grandfather, was a very anointed man. He truly lived and taught the gospel. The blessings on that family line is strong. I’m sure there are promises God is keeping for Joel and his family from the faith and prayers of his ancestors. We have to look at this, his platform etc. as a promise of God that we, the believers and followers, should respect even though he doesn’t teach the full gospel. Worse things happened in the Old Testament with the promises God made to someone for future generations of his family. We do not understand the mind of God. We just know that he keeps his promises. As you said Melissa, at least he’s leading some people out there to their first time in the Bible. From there, people go on and get deeper with God. If not right away, then usually later. At least he seeds people with their first seeds of Jesus.

After college when I got my own car and became more independent I found a wonderful church and bought my first bible and started down the path of getting saved. He is a loving and gracious God and chooses to bless us according to His will sometimes, but the Bible states that we will suffer for His sake. If you’re not being persecuted for being a Christian, it’s time to consider whether or not you’re saved.

My thought is this, some of us take hard stances about people like Joel. That doesn't mean that we do that without love or respect. No one wants to hear that their favorite teacher is a false teacher, and to have it pointed out by someone can feel like hate, because what if someone that I listen to is deemed a false teacher too. I know that you guys are trying to learn, but don't disregard what those that seem harsh have to say. There are folks that I don't like their rhetoric, but I've learned many things that I didn't think of before by listening to some of them. I can find all kinds of things that didn't get pointed out in the clips provided, but that would take too much time to cover. The last thing I will say, it's a big jump to go from a systematic theology that is Biblical theology to reformed theology, that clearly (maybe not that clear to those that haven't thought about it) is not. Most of all...keep praying and keep learning.

I Feel I did receive God's favor sorry, so I am definitely not comfortable calling Joel Osteen a false profit because it is 7 years later and those teaching whenever I am in a low place, I can think on Joel Osteen's teachings and remember God's grace for me. Joel was someone I enjoyed before I was Christian. I bought his books, and recommended him but once I was saved and born again I was able to discern his twisting of scripture! When a person knows the Bible in context they would know that repentance is a change of heart and NOT repentance of sin! Jesus already took care of your sin. You don't have to say a prayer to be saved, you just have to BELIEVE in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. That by FAITH alone is how you're saved. (Eph 2:8-9) I've only been a Christian for 6 years but I have time to study bc I'm in my 70's. I was in a religious cult for 63 years, that my mother joined when I was 8. PTL I was given the opportunity to see truth.

The gaping omission by Joel Osteen is sin, repentance, and the Cross. Several years ago, I did a personal inquiry into his teachings because I wanted to be intellectually honest and spiritually appropriate in “judging” his content. I was completely willing to have my mind changed from the mostly negative view I had of his ministry. Instead, listening to 3-4 of his full sermons reinforced for me that he was not preaching the full Gospel. I didn’t hear him once mention sin, repentance, the Crucifixion (or need for Believers to crucify their flesh to identify fully with Christ), or even one word about reading/studying the Bible in order to BE transformed. Joel Osteen may have feel-good intentions but salvation is definitely not about “feeling” good. So this is not about how we “feel” about Osteen. It’s about what we see, hear, and think as it relates to the Word and our transformed minds.

I love how Paul used the phrase “inspirational fluff.” I am a Bible study leader for a women’s group and we used to always do the mainstream, big name Bible studies. And one day it hit me, they’re full of “inspirational fluff.” The teacher usually yells with bulged eyes “truths” of Scripture at you. (AKA emotionally-driven, motivational mic-drop phrases to hype you up - taken totally out of context.). You feel all pumped up for the day. But it never satisfies beyond the initial emotional response.
Since this realization, my co-leader and I have chosen our own curriculum or simple read through and annotated Scripture with our group on our own, without a book to tell us “how”. We also found Susan Heck’s website and are going through her study of 2 Peter. What a difference! She exegetes the actual Word of God. There’s no fluff at all. You leave feeling conviction and FED by the Word of God, not the words of man (or woman).
I say all this to say, that unfortunately our Bible study group membership has dropped significantly. Our ladies want the “fluff”. It’s saddening, to say the least.

I’m not fully convinced of limited atonement (Mike winger’s approach on limited application is more reasonable in my opinion), but lordship salvation is very biblical. Faith without works is dead and you know a tree by its fruit. If works don’t follow your faith, then perhaps that faith is not genuine😯

      Hebrews 5:13-14
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Beloved Brethren, One of my Spiritual Gifts is discerning of the Spirits. Many people today say don't judge, yet God gave me this gift to judge righteously- discern (to know) a true man or woman of God from a false prophet-teacher.
Listen, we are living in the endtimes and I'm sorry to break this to many of you but 90% of the preachers aired on TV, if not 100% are all false teachers!
That is why I don't watch TV. Most Churches today are filled with Freemason Pastors, false teachers!
      TV is all about deception!
Please get in the word, get on your knees ask God to bless you with Spiritual Discernment that you may discern who is true and who is false among you because if you can't discern good from evil, if you don't have knowledge of good or evil pastors, you are in trouble already!
And your soul is at stake!
False Teachers revealed to me by God personally are Joel Osteen (prosperity preacher) and David E Taylor (he performs signs, miracles ,wonders but leaves out salvation, holiness, repentance, truth).
      Matthew 24:23-24
At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it!
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Others to beware of there false teachings are:
      Joyce Meyers (prosperity teacher).
      Benny Hinn (prosperity teacher).
Kathryn Khulman (leaves the salvation message out).
Kim Clement- (teaches that suicide is not a sin, sadly suicide is the taking of there own lives and in God's eyes it's considered murder).
Kat Kerr- (The Lord made known Michael Jackson did not make it to Heaven sadly, however she's speaking the opposite. Also she doesn't teach holiness, she teaches we can live however we want and still make it to heaven).
And there's many many more, that I don't have the time to type.
Any Pastor aired on TV , or any Prosperity Gospel Preacher or any Signs and Wonders and Miracle pastor that only focuses on Miracles not Salvation message are all false!!
      Matthew 7:21-23
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
      Wake up people of God!!

Refreshing conversation! I’m tired of heresy hunter’s so this was good. I’ve never been a fan of Osteen but would not call him a heretic. I was a hippie in the 70’s, not raised in church and about as lost as one could be. The Church I was saved in was a Pentecostal Church and one of the first things my Pastor told me was to get a Bible and read it to make sure he was preaching the Word. He always preached the “negative”, and it was most of the sermon but he would end with the answer, the positive. He was accused of being too negative but the sermons were just what I needed to hear. I needed to know their was deliverance from the sins that had grasped my life. I needed to know that God could change me through the power of the Holy Spirit. I needed to know their was a remedy for my wretchedness. We used to jokingly call these sermons bandaid sermons because we had been operated on. What I found was knowing the negatives was a positive because it challenged me and dealt with me and changed me. God’s Word is perfect exactly as it is, it does not need us to make it more palatable.
With regard to being on Larry King, any Christian who agrees to go on a show like that had best be prepared for the secular gotcha questions.

It has been a long time since I watched him. My assessment of his teaching was that it was good advice but not the gospel. His teaching was self-help, practical advice, but if applied to the gospel and the way to be right with God, it was completely WORKS based and did not require repentance and humility, acknowledging our need and Christ’s sacrifice. Jesus’s works were left out of his messages as was most traditional Christian theology about salvation, Jesus, God, creation, and human beings. Sitting around and waiting for God to do stuff for us is wrong theologically so his self-help approach to the Bible and Christianity is actually helpful to many. However, ignoring the deep problems of sin and Jesus’s sacrifice and giving people a false theology about what it means to be human, that we can essentially save ourselves by our good attitudes and deeds, was Osteen’s great error in my opinion back when I watched him. This sounds good, but ultimately it lays on OUR shoulders the responsibility to save ourselves. That is too great a burden for human being to bear. It required a God Man-Hebrews talks all about that. Is it possible to be balanced? I mean, getting out of bed earlier would help me live a better life, and it may even help me spiritually to discipline myself (this is a command and the example of Jesus), but Jesus’s sacrifice means we need even more help than that to be truly redeemed.

It is really hitting home with me today to hear Melissa talk about the fact that the statistics are so jarring when it comes to the numbers of those who consider themselves biblical Christians, versus the droves of people flocking to mega churches. I went to a private, Christian school and it is so painful, and sad to me to see some of my classmates and friends calling themselves progressive Christians because they are so outraged at things such as "purity culture", for example. Hearing and seeing these things happen is saddening, and also causes me to realize all the more how important it is to know the Bible, and to draw my understanding of God from it, and not from my own understanding, or another outside understanding.
Again, I love you guys! Thank you for your ministries, and God bless.

Ok, I have a question as a new subscriber to you. I heard your guest say that people at Joel Osteen's church can be saved. However I have heard from multiple Christians from multiple branches of Christianity say in order to be saved, all you need to do is accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior.
So, you are saying that if someone doesn't subscribe to everything you consider truth (regarding religion) or someone goes to a church like this that they don't accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. That is impossible to tell. You don't know, nor can you know that.
If you are going to say you aren't saved because you only hear or preach (the good things), it may not be the full Gospel but that has nothing to do with weather you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
You are back sliding what you say gets you saved.

What help is there in a sermon, if the gospel of Christs finished work isn't preached, to save a sinner from hell?

The add that pops up halfway through this video is for Bill Johnson talking about growing in wisdom. I know it’s not your fault. 😆

❔So does Joel Osteen thinks that a person will be "beaten down" for hearing The whole Truth of GOD's Word? (Joel Osteen said that "people are beaten down enough")
❔Is that the way Joel Osteen thinks of GOD's Word? ....as something 'negative'?
❔Does Joel Osteen despise The Word of GOD, as to withhold the rest of GOD's Word? ....as Joel preaches & exalts his own words above GOD's Word, while trying to suppress GOD's Word?
Joel Osteen doesn't want to offend the tither's. He is friend to the world, which is enmity with GOD. Joel Osteen should understand that: "The Word of GOD Is quick, and Is Powerful, and sharper than a two-edge sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul, and of the spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a Discerner of the thoughts and intent of the heart."

at the end of the video Paul mentioned the verse about “confess with their mouth and believe in their heart that Jesus is Lord and you will be saved” but the context of that verse is not an American culture where there’s almost no persecution. the context of it was the disciples being murdered for knowing Jesus. so when it is said that they must “confess with their mouth” literally means “RISK DEATH”!! be willing to lay your life down for Jesus and that is how you will be saved.

I am not so sure that heresy hunting is wrong. I think some are called to do so. Polemics and it was practiced by Paul and very early fathers of the faith.

@@PaulandMorgan I think so. Take carm online. Who would know which cults to avoid if people like that were not aggressively seeking out what might endanger the flock?
I respect Melissa a lot. I watched her videos on JW 7-8 years ago. She has a good approach and is knowledgeable. I would recommend any of her videos. I wish I was able to dialogue with people like she does because I also have an intense passion for apologetics. I have high respect for her. But I do believe heresy hunting is biblical and some are called. It also doesn’t always look pleasant even when it’s motivation is love and kindness for your neighbors. There is a certain amount of righteous anger when you are aware of someone endangering the flock. Leviticus 19 explains what loving your neighbor is supposed to look like and it’s confrontational if you read the passage. Confrontational can be loving driven even when you must rebuke sharply.

There is an uncanny similarity between a Joel Osteen sermon and a Bob Ross video, That I just can’t un hear.

It would be a sin for Joel to say who’s going to heaven and hell. He’s not god.

Surely a preacher though would explain that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. What an opportunity, on TV in front of so many, to speak the truth, both for the sake of the audience and for the interviewer

Joel Olsteen's abrupt call for salvation around minute 32:00 may have occurred because he lost track of time teaching and looked at an invisible count down clock and realized he had little time to do a call to accept Jesus.
Christianity is often taught with a unbiblical poverty mentality. Christians should live just as good as anybody else on the planet. Life should be comfortable.

Hey there! I have a question. Would y'all consider doing a video on hell? Specifically all the hells mentioned in the Bible? (Gehenna, Sheol, gates of Hades, Tartarus) etc. I know it's not your usual type of stuff, and it requires a lot of research, but I'm interested in your guy's take on the deep dive. Happy New Year!

Agree that we should treat people with love and respect, but i take false teachers and such seriously. The Bible tells us to mark and avoid them.

I just made a video about “if you’re a Christian, is it ok to manifest”. I too, came from the new age and got wrapped up in the charismatic and false teachings/prophets bc I was so hungry for the LORD and it was like a “Christian version” of what I was familiar with.
When I realized what I was wrapped up in, it was devastating and I almost walked away. But instead, I decided to go deep with the LORD and asked Him to help correct all my false beliefs and quit listening to everyone. He was faithful and it was so incredibly painful, but now I speak out about it a lot on my channel and know that going through it has helped me help others out of it (I pray).

It shouldn’t be a surprise to the world what Christians think and believe. So we shouldn’t be afraid to say the truth. We are so afraid to shock the world and be hated but Jesus tells us ‘they hated me first.’

When judgmental, condemning Christians go low, Joel Osteen goes high.
