Good morning from Jackson Hole, WY! The 2020 Acadia AT4 was actually a nice surprise for us. We weren't that impressed with the new Acadia in 2017, but the styling changes that GMC has made for 2020 and this new AT4 trim has made this vehicle much more appealing and we'd argue that some buyers may think of this more as a reborn Chevrolet Blazer over the "actual" Blazer. Plus, it's built in the USA, which for some buyers is reason alone to choose it over the Chevrolet cousin. We're heading to Ojai, CA later this morning to drive the 2020 Subaru Legacy next!
Adrian de leon We saw it there but other journalists were driving it. We choose the AT4 because it’s a new trim for 2020. We only had the Acadia for about an hour to shoot it yesterday.
black wheels help alot in the trails. When i think about an off road package on a vehicle I think about blacking out the wheels. Doesnt it just scream, "Imma hit this near vertical hillclimb with my acadia" , or "Dam I think this river is only a foot and a half of water Im sure I can make it"
At least they put 17 inch wheels on it instead of 20 or 21 inch wheels. What's up with all these companies building off road vehicles with 20 inch wheels that will not survive a real off road trek!
The Telluride is in a different class................. so yes. It should be. The Tellurides competition is the chevy traverse. Not an Acadia. This cars competition is more of a Santa fea or kia sorento
Regarding the push button transmission selector, think about how easy it would be to accidentally push a button in that area of the dashboard. By requiring a pull action it makes it much more positive and much more likely that it will be an intended effort.
with the Rav4 getting the more offroad/truck design which turned out to be a homeriun for toyota, im glad other manufacturers are designing their SUV’s to have a more truck based look while offering more offroad features and less carlike. One thing i dont like is the taillights that look like a honda
You laid this out really well, Sofyan. Couldn't agree more about the push-button gear selector. If GMC is trying to move toward a pro-grade - what you described as masculine image, then scrapping a comfortable & intuitive console shift in favor of a convoluted button setup, is a craptastic way to get there. We shopped the previous gen Acadia Denali, "on paper" as a top choice. Once we drove it, we liked it. But it wasn't quite as stable feeling as our 2004 GMT-360 Bravada Final 500 that needed replacing (near perfect condition at 105K miles, broadsided & totaled by red light runner), and it definitely had less passion & personality in its feel & design. We didn't need a 3rd row, but were open to it. So we sat down to discuss, and we couldn't wrap our minds around over $50K being "a deal" for what it was. Long story short, we started over, shopped around & chose a Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate - out the door around $38K (roomier yet still a several $K less than GM's Terrain/Envision/Equinox triplets), and better handling with more features than the Acadia Denali offered, i.e. the 360 camera. The SF surprised us with more passenger space on all counts than our Bravada had, and just a little less cargo room. We'd purchased primarily GM product for the past couple decades, not out of patriotism or loyalty - we genuinely liked what we drove. But for the first time from our POV - especially in the past 4 years with both product & pricing - they've really lost their way.
the interior has looked like this since 2017- how were you totally surprised by the design? And what comparable CUV is better inside? Have you ever seen the interior of the Pilot?
A couple of comments- if you park and shut-off a GMC vehicle with this AWD / FWD control in AWD, it will stay in AWD when the vehicle is re-started- (we have a Terrain with the same 9 speed transmission /AWD control ). You said this about the Terrain also... just sayin'. Also, the reason you have to Pull the D and R buttons on the trans is so that you, or a front passenger don't accidently press D or R while underway, parking, etc. After a brief time this shifter, it is very intuitive, and you can use it without having to look down. It helps free up a ton of space above and below the console for storage.
I test drove a blazer a few days ago and I actually like it and considering it for my next vehicle purchase, I don’t get why everyone’s shading it😂 but that’s just my opinion
Santa Claus0001 prices will come down after they sit on the lot for a while. Otherwise, just wait and buy a used one. Also, try a lease.you should be able to buy a used one for 25%-35% discount off of original price. I’m sure you could buy even cheaper with some miles on them. However, get yourself a used car warranty to cover major expenses.
@@AdonaiNate True. GM has been using the same layout across the board for years. Its functional but they can do better than this . Just like Lincoln ,Kia and Hyundai. Coming up with something new and modern just like the European cars its always good to eyes and to the touch.
I have a '19 Acadia and really like it. I like the exterior changes in the front and headlights, but I dislike the change to the rear lights. The 9 speed transmission is important, but that push button selector would be annoying.
The Equinox 2.0T with the 9-speed takes considerably longer than I would like to downshift as well. It seems like you didn’t have an issue with the 9-speed in the blazer?
Since the transmission selector is in an area you’d tend to reach for or place items a lot, I figured it’d be safer to pull drive gears rather than push to avoid accidental shifts.
I'm glad to see you doing the first review of the refreshed Acadia! I like the upright front end that's more squared off. GMC does use real aluminum trim in its vehicles, not faux aluminum or aluminized @ 5:44. That includes the Acadia and the Sierra for sure and it on the dash and the steering wheel. It even has the brushed texture and feels like the metal that it is. Chevy uses faux aluminum even on the High Country trim level. And it definitely looks fake.
TheTonytodd Thanks for clarifying that! GMC really didn’t have much about this vehicle during the presentation yesterday as they focused a lot on the Sierra HD. We almost didn’t get a chance to film this car and only had it for an hour yesterday to get this video done :)
@@theredline no problem. The difference GMC makes with the AT4 (previous All Terrain) trim is the the aluminum is darker like the dark chrome on the outside compared to other trim levels. I agree that the rear taillight treatment looks too much like the Explorer though.
"Off-Road Ready"? I guess if you're going to the winery for the afternoon it could handle that gravel road ok. Pretty cool looking for a mini van though.
I just watched another review by "alex norman" and he said the Acadia at4 does have adaptive cruise and even displayed it on screen. He even showed how to set the collision response.
We have a Terrain with the same AWD system. If you park it in AWD, it will stay in AWD when restarted. Does not go back to FWD as you said, every time.
David Stolarski For some reason, this car kept diverting back to 2WD after time we started it and shut it off. Even after we left it in AWD before shutting it off.
1. The alum is real and has been 2. You can get vented seats and power tilt telescope wheel in this model 3. adaptive cruise is available, just not on this trim 4. No mention of standard LED headlights when typically a big deal is made about cars that LACK LED headlights
I am pretty sure, having the drive selector as a pull button ensures that you don't accidentally select a drive mode by bumping the button. Same reason as to why the window switches are safer when they are pull buttons instead of push buttons.
1/ There is adaptive cruise on the Denali trim. 2/ The mode selector does remember AWD mode even after you shut down and restart. It just won’t stay in tow, off road, or sport mode. 3/ Are you sure there isn’t an off road mode? On my Denali it’s indicated by a mountain road symbol.
Great reviews as always and balanced. Ehhh I’ll stick with my Subaru more ground clearance and full time awd with better mpg. I HATE push button gear selection.
That transmission shift button setup should make this vehicle illegal to sell in America. I am not sure why we can’t have a lever but I guess it’s all about having cheap electronic buttons.
I think the reason why you have to pull on the D and the R is for safety. If you just pushed them it will do just that (with foot on the break) but knowing both R and D is an actual gear, they want you to go one step further to put it in one of those gears so I do understand why you must pull on those 2. It’s for safety and that’s probably on their thinking also.
I believe the push button transmission buttons are a safety feature, having to pull up on them are safer vs accidentally pushing them down and throwing the vehicle into a different gear, just my thought!
I love this new refresh. It should've came out like this in 2017 to look more luxurious than the traverse. The interior is beauitful. Like the terrain I like the push button shifter. If you leave in a home with a driveway or garage (meaning you have to reverse before going in to drive) the reverse and drive being pulled back makes sense. Put your fingers in both and when you wanna switch from reverse to drive just pull back or vice versa instead of having to think pull or push. It's always pull.
If you are looking for a man van to haul the family around in thats also good on snow and dirt roads, get a telluride. If you are looking for something that you can go exploring in and bring the family with you, get a jeep (name your model). The acadia is just a budget xt6. This at4 trim isnt anything special Also the FWD default is for EPA fuel economy reasons. There had to be a big enough difference with it engaged and disengaged to where in order to get the fuel economy numbers they did they had to reset it every power cycle, just like auto start stop. This is probably defeatable via hacks like auto start/stop
seems like it wouldve been a good idea to do an off road ready Blazer Z71, like what people associate w the name, and an Acadia Sport or something w some extra horses and random alcantara for a city commuter, like what people associate w the name.
Not sure why you'd compare the third row accommodations to the VW Tiguan, a vehicle that's eight inches less in length than the Acadia. A more appropriate comparison is with the 189" long KIA Sorento with more legroom in the third row than the Acadia.
Stephen Hendricks agreed! I own a 2019 Tiguan and didn’t think it was a relevant comparison. The Tiguan 3rd row is great for small children just like this Acadia.
if it is an auto why bother have a shifter, it is not like you are physically changing any gears, instead that giant stick is flipping through switches, whilst taking unnecesary space
Thanks for the review, always informative. Considering a used 2018 4 runner, MDX, or now maybe the new Acadia. definitely 3rd row seating a must, and towing a light weight camper trailer. The 4 runner has a 5000 lb towing cap. Any suggestions ?
I used to own 2012 Tahoe and now I own a 2018 Tahoe and GM definitely needs to upgrade the way they use interior space. The way GM do it, third seat is for kids only. Also there is no enough storage places in the cabin compared to, for example, Ford Expedition.
Even if it could go down the same assembly line the difference in size is allot more than just rebadging it. Do you think they took a Traverse/Enclave and just hack sawed the running rails for the shorter Blazer/XT6? The floor pan is different along with the supports for a smaller design to withstand roof load tests. The obvious to the eye is the sheet metal of which none is shared. The XT6 will have some sort of adapticlve shock that the Traverse does not have so the susenpsinon geometry will change from the subframe down. The engine bay and supports are probably very similar unless there will be a 400 hp Vsport version. All of the suspension tuning will be different also. That goes to the closer Acadia too....
Hi, regarding the transmission selector... their may be a reason why you need to pull the D & P instead of push for safety reason... you won’t accidentally push or hit the D while you’re at park or halt or when ur driving and suddenly hit the R then you know what’s next... thanks & more power! God bless
I think they make you pull up on drive/reverse. For safety reasons. So if there bumped by accident. From kids/pets moving around in the vehicle while it's running. It won't pop into a drive mod.🤔😊
Sofyan, hey there! Just to let you know regarding the shifter the reason why you pull up for drive and reverse is a safety feature. Wht if there is a kid in the seat pressing buttons. So I think that is why it is done like that. But I aint a fan of the design anyway
Really like the looks of this. Do you recall if it has sunglasses holder up by the rear view mirror? Can’t wait to hear pricing? Think the 4 cylinder 2.0 turbo will be enough to push this around?
A Durango with a different grill as far as the exterior styling. It looks dated already. No idea why people pay that price premium for that horrible and bland of an interior. Interior brought to you by Rubbermaid
What damages this SUV are those gear shift controls. They seem abominable to work with. I expected it to be ready for extreme off road but looks like GM didn't have those intentions. Thanks for the review as always.

mlwebb79 agreed
The only time I would buy this is if it was fully loaded for 25k.
great. You are correct, it should be 20k cheaper than the competition because its a GMC
It sounds like they need to offer an AT4 Pro model with selectable at turn-on 4wd and skid plates.
I think they did the gear selector like that because of just in case accidentall presses
Or the buttons don’t work unless your foot is on the brake, would be a better solution...
D and R buttons aren't push for more safety to avoid accidental or kids touch. I guess it's a smart design
Hi, regarding the transmission selector... their may be a reason why you need to pull the D & P instead of push for safety reason... you won’t accidentally push or hit the D while you’re at park or halt or when ur driving and suddenly hit the R then you know what’s next... thanks & more power! God bless
you are correct
I personally like the looks of the 2016 model that my mother has in thinking of buying one like hers myself
I like it especially because it doesn't try to hard to be different, personally it looks better than the blazer for sure
Just bring back the column shifter. The best shifter ever
Awesome Review Of 2020 GMC Acadia. 😀
Hey- I thought explorer too from the profile. Because of the rear profile view. But it’s a great looking facia!
i lost interest in the suv when you had to push to select gear
It's so funny that this has so much more room than a Yukon in the third row, and this is not a full size suv
Really like the looks of this. Do you recall if it has sunglasses holder up by the rear view mirror? Can’t wait to hear pricing? Think the 4 cylinder 2.0 turbo will be enough to push this around?
Do the Denali. Just as “off road” with a better interior
Every thing is good except gearbox transmission selector switch button 🤦🤔
A Durango with a different grill as far as the exterior styling. It looks dated already. No idea why people pay that price premium for that horrible and bland of an interior. Interior brought to you by Rubbermaid
yup. looks like a challengers LED
Nah, That's a insult to the Durango to compare this to it.
@@errickkitchin36 Explorer looks miles better than this if youu value your fucking money stay far away from this Acadia it is JUNK!
Errick Kitchin Durango is dated af it’s from 2011
@@f181234 I'd rather have slightly dated and proven than cheap plastic junk from GM. My uncle has a 17 and it's been great tom him.
What damages this SUV are those gear shift controls. They seem abominable to work with. I expected it to be ready for extreme off road but looks like GM didn't have those intentions. Thanks for the review as always.
Love this car....HATE that manual sun shade! What were they thinking?!?!
Is the AWD system on this trim different from the Denali AWD trim? Is it really any more capable?
2020 Acadia vs 2010 Acadia which is bigger in size?
In 2017 GMC sold both sizes. The early o e is much bigger.
