Lights in houses don't draw any power, and don't count toward your total power useage. You can power your entire settlement with one 3 KW generator (err, I assume it's KW...heh). Pylons power any house lights within a certain radius of them. The "stand alone" lights, like the work lights, need a hard-wired connection and DO use power. Keep in mind, power lines are EXPENSIVE in terms of copper...and copper isn't all that easy to get. If you stick with the "house" lights that are available (standing pole lights, wall fixtures, hanging fixtures), you just need a pylon close enough to energize them...no wires required. There was a rumor going around that the larger pylon had a huge radius, but my testing doesn't support that. Radius seems the same. All the large pylon does is give you a taller tower. That can actually be handy in some applications. There are also exterior wall connectors that serve the same purpose and function the same: radius of power for house lights. No pylon will come even close to lighting up an entire house. You need several (or several wall connections). If you're lucky, 4 of them placed right up against the wall will do it. Since the power zone is a sphere, putting them on top of houses with peaked roofs is problematic. Wiring those pylons/connectors all in can be a hassle. I actually came here looking for pro tips from people who have come up with creative ways to lay out power grids for places like Sanctuary. Regarding settlement raids: Lots of people claim to have the formula for that, and most of them stick with the + must be equal to/greater than , or you will get raided. I've got 6 settlements that I've actually gotten up and running. At least 6 more that I've claimed and am leaving idle. Some of the idle ones have water, but no settlers...which means no food. Still, they have 0 defense and have *never* been raided. I've got some that have, for instance, 32 defense and only 16 power+water with 4 settlers. Most of them have been raided more than once. Sanctuary is my main base, and I'm running big water purifiers. My food+water number is currently 103, with defense and 43. I've only been raided once. So basically, I don't think anyone knows for sure how it works. I'm not sure if Bethsoft have posted on the matter. Good luck, have fun. It's a great game, even though it's got some pretty glaring flaws ;)
there's an issue in my fallout game I know what button to press in my PS4 to attach wire from generator to pylon pole the button is triangle and I do exactly that but the wire won't connect at all and yes I have built the generator and pylon correctly there's like a glitch or something in the game not letting it connect
I know this is a lil off topic but how many ppl can you have come stay in your little community and can you put beds and stuff in all the houses for the extra ppl that come and stay? I'm new to the game and a bit confused thanks for your help
I've been putting the generator outside and connecting conduits to the side of the building. But I'm having trouble using the power supply in vault 88 to run power to the big area where the trains are. Do I have to run conduits down the hallways or is there a way to get it to go through the walls?
Can you hook up the interior hanging lights to a on/off switch? It always annoys me that it'll be broad daylight outside and all my indoor lights and outside wall lights will still be on. I tried To connect the on/off switch to the generator also tried to hook it to the power pilon itself. No matter what I do i cant get those inside lights to shut on and off with the switch or with the terminal.
Hey I'm trying to do strobe lights for my power armors and I can't connect the light source I already got the power pylon built and I can't seem to connect it :edit nvm it just toke a bit
Can this be done in a prefab house? I can't power my 2 wall lights, and I have 2 generators and 2 conduits running, but still no lights. Does it only work in a house you built or something?
Every time I hook up a power source to a flame thrower or defensive equipment with the pylon pole it damages the defensive equipment and I gotta repair it in seconds.
I understand this but don't understand why there isn't a way to have the generator OUTSIDE your house with lights AND a switch inside. Is that possible people? I don't want my settlers breathing in exhaust from the generator while they are sleeping!
Thank you !!!, I was so confused I got to level 40 before I realized you needed a “power pylon” to power light bulbs 😂😂❤❤
There is no way this game couldn't have EASILY made a in game tutorial or better discriptions
Thank you! Concise and to the point. Great Job!
+Brew Warrior NP man
Exactly what I was gonna say

5 ft away from generator
You should use the connectors that can connect to the wall or roof. Does the same thing as the pylon, just uses less space.
+daa002 Good tip, Thanks :)

Thank you. Straight and to the point. Was trying to connect a weird to my hanging lights like a dingus.
Fact on the side: it also works that way in Fallout 76, with the exception, that you only have to build a power pylon to power up your indoor lights
thanks this was very helpful I couldnt figure out how to get those hanging lights to work
Best vid on this subject! Thanks for the no bullshit straight at em approach.
Hey! Awesome to see you do Fallout 4. Will keep an eye out for these vids. Just picked up my copy today! :D
+Game Hound It is more than worth the money, I know you will enjoy it :)

I know this is a lil off topic but how many ppl can you have come stay in your little community and can you put beds and stuff in all the houses for the extra ppl that come and stay? I'm new to the game and a bit confused thanks for your help

Hey I'm trying to do strobe lights for my power armors and I can't connect the light source I already got the power pylon built and I can't seem to connect it :edit nvm it just toke a bit
Thanks mate this helped me in my fallout journey!!
How do the settlers not die from co2 poisoning from the exhaust fumes from the generators being inside?
Can this be done in a prefab house? I can't power my 2 wall lights, and I have 2 generators and 2 conduits running, but still no lights. Does it only work in a house you built or something?
Are some lights only able to work indoors?

Every time I hook up a power source to a flame thrower or defensive equipment with the pylon pole it damages the defensive equipment and I gotta repair it in seconds.
