Design Cinema - EP 97 - Planning Your Workflow

  • When learning, give yourself a design goal, set a realistic deadline and establish a consistent workflow. In this episode, we will be demonstrating these processes step by step. We will be taking the theme of “scientific research ship” and expanding it into several key frames.
    The first step always involves finding good references. Next, list out the design objectives and set a deadline. Third, use rough sketches to find the composition and initial design direction. Finally, do a mood and lighting pass by using photo-bashing to speed up the process.
    By following this production workflow, you will have a clear direction before committing to the final image. This will help you save time and frustration down the road.

    You always help me to take a step back and not get overwhelmed with starting a piece. You don't know how helpful this is for me. Thank you!

      Agreed! Not understand workflow and staring at a giant blank canvas is so overwhelming, and worse, ending up with a piece you hate after struggling for hours. This structure is SO much better for both improvement and higher quality end results.

    This was very insightful! The whole concept of essentially creating your own reference with real world subjects and changing 10% by combining multiple things to work from is awesome. Thank you

    I've recently started on some personal art projects and approached it very similarly. Just sketch out any ideas that you have, no matter how bad or messy it might seem, as long as you yourself understand what's going on.
    I think me watching Fengs' stuff for so long might've burned that into my brain lol

    Thank you Feng Zhu. I prefer to see the early, thinking stages, like this episode rather then heavy 3d or rendering which we can find already in other places and in your previous episodes. This here is concept art and is the gold quality stuff I can watch over and over to learn from. Awesome awesome stuff. Thank you for all that you do. Ryan Zingery

    Learnt so much from you Feng over the past decade, you produce very valuable information for free! Much appreciated. You bring all these cool ideas to life and it's always inspiring. Please do more ancient technology themed stuff, they must of had giant diamond tipped chainsaws to have cut those monolithic granite stones. You would no doubt make that look really cool.

    I love how you are showing your understanding of position when doing the ship's interior... where you kind of are showing the direction of the sun which you do not see from the ship's front view but would if you looked from the ship's front towards the horizon.

    I just don't have words to thank you for this all this incredible information. I've never commented in any of your videos though I follow you since a very long time. I once thought about getting into this world.... I ended up choosing medicine haha but still I watch mostly all of your videos and I see how many of the tips you give, extend to other areas in study and work. I appreciate so much being able to have a little insight into the videogame and film industry, it makes me see and enjoy them much more. I think the reason behind my never choosing to dedicate to concept art and design was: 1- lack of information about the industry 2- lack of confidence on what I was able to do and my skills, which leaded to never really searching more information. You basically sumarized both points in the video hehe. Thank you for the great content, always a pleasure to watch and learn !!!

      if i recall, if u dont show to anyone its fine.
      But if its for a client, work, etc. u gotta destroy 80-90% of it. (meaning u draw/edit over it)
      Also, check its copy right rules. some pixs in flickers allow to use in commersial for free.

    • @AlisterLockhart
      @AlisterLockhart 5 років тому +1

      A good rule of thumb is that if you figure the photographer would recognise their work at a glance, you've probably broken copyright. Bad risk for the small independent artist- getting pinged by Getty or similar agencies can fuck your life up for years.
