    Hi Feng. I hope you realize that this is actually EXACTLY what many of us want to see in your videos. A slow progression thru an painting showing actual brush strokes. What you may think is boring is actually quite fascinating to us, especially those of us who are not yet at a professional level with our art work - i.e. your core audience and student body. So, thanks for this video! And we'd love to see more like it.

    I've always found putting in the fine tune details the most therapeutic part of drawing or painting.

    And yes Feng, I understand that going to a school physically is way better than online since you make connections and the 1-1 interaction with the professor. Everybody just remember that not all of us have the chance to go to Cali or Singapore to take concept art classes. This is where online comes into play.

    Mr. Feng Zhu, all I can say a BIG THANK YOU! I have been collecting books especially film animations. wayback 2006 I bought a book The Art Of World of Warcraft of Blizzard Entertainment , that time I could hardly understand some of the concepts in the book, now its all clear you make it very simple and very Professional... From the bottom of my heart Thank you.

    Hey Feng, I'm glad you're covering painting details with this one! It's the details that was hoping to see a little bit of, actually. And I find nothing you do here boring! You could be designing patterns for a quilt for all I care, and I'd still watch closely! Thanks for these periodic videos! They're insightful tidbits of just what a designer typically goes through in developing concept art in the industry, and I find all these very helpful.

    It's about how light works. Different light wave length will travel at difference distances. Saturation has to do with with wave length can reach your eye (depending on the material, atmosphere, distance). So for example, the color blue can travel very far; so thus the saturation level remains high even when the object is far (the ocean, sky, etc). Other wave length such as red don't travel far, thus it appears more grey in the distance.

    To apply into the full-time Diploma program, you are not required to have a certain degree qualification. The applicants need to be at least 16 years old and have completed the Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or 12 years of study at their respective countries. In addition, you will be required to submit a visual art portfolio of no more than 15 pieces and pass the phone interview.

    Definitely have to agree on the detailing part becoming tedious. It's a lot of fun to get the initial idea down and then it comes to a crawl when you have to go bit by bit to place all the details.

    I recently signed up for an online class, but it was only becuase i'm pretty much a self taught artist. In the UK there are 0 classes or courses for conceptual design or anything you mentioned you teach your students. Videos like yours are the some of the only real information people like me can get, so i hope that online class would just be an extension of similar information. Much appreciate the time you take to do these.

    if I don't learn something new from you every video, I learn something by following your advice. Challenge yourself to try new things. The week or two I've been watching your videos I've been going absolutely hardcore on my photoshop, and wow. My art has evolved more in these few weeks than they have over the past 2 years doing free lance artwork. You've literally pointed me in the direction of a career. At 24, finding everythig boring and irritating that says alot. Great videos, keep it up :D

    FZD School of Design offers matte painting for both the full-time program and short courses. In the full-time Diploma program, the students will undergo a module called Master Production Technique, in which they will learn the advanced skills in matte painting. Whereas in short course, Digital Painting, the students will learn to understand the importance of composition, lighting, value, perspective, focus, forms and communication to be able to tell story through the digital paintings

    Hahahahaha I was one of those people who kept on bothering Feng with online classes. I have taken online classes all around. Im telling you right now those classes helped me to get started in digital painting. No school around my area has that. I also would like to point out that there are no school around NYC that teach concept art. So im "forced" to take online classes at CGMW master classes. Its one of the 2 concept art online schools available.

    obviously depends on what you want to paint but If i'm unsure, I usually just start in A3, sometimes widen it as I'm jotting down the composition

    Equipment is pretty straight forward these days:
    Fast PC or MAC (laptop or desktop, doesn't matter. If you do a lot of on-site remote work, then obviously a laptop is the clear choice).
    Big, high res screen (30" screen with 1920x1200 or higher res...I prefer 2560x1600)
    Photoshop (any version since CS1 is great. I use CS1 at work, and CS5 at home studio)
    Wacom Intuos 3, 4 or Cintiq (all great...completely up to personal preference and budget).
    that's about all you need

  • @Fengdesigns
    @Fengdesigns 13 років тому

    @Fengdesigns
    And to continue: Age really doesn't matter match. But I do think you have to evaluate your standard of living. At my age (also 30s), I just can't stay-up all night and take on 3 freelance projects at once. I probably can gather the energy if I forced myself, but I don't want to any more :)
    Many of my friends are in the 40s and even 50s and are doing great in design. So at the end of the day, it's your portfolio and results that counts, not age.

    Feng, Thanks for your videos they are awesome. I get the fact that online courses are not your prefered way of teaching and I can also relate to the fact that it's less beneficial than live lessons, but to completely scrap the idea of online courses is somewhat of a disappointment, there might be viewers who are just happy to learn a few tricks and are just hobby painters/designers/,... , if you say that online courses are not beneficial at all then what is the point of these videos ? I always thought they were ment to teach us something. (This is just my personal opinion) I love your videos and I hope you keep making new ones !

  • @QueenFiria
    @QueenFiria 11 років тому

    @ Feng, I think a reason why I would want to know what kind of brush you use is not because of a secret shortcut. I would ask because of how good the strokes look in the earliest stage. It's very easy to come up with ideas very early in these videos, and some of that is the brush; opacity and flow. Because this has such a rough learning curve, any edge a student has to advance is most welcome.
    That's why I would ask what brush you use, at any rate.

    He adds a layer on top of everything and paint it black, then set it on saturation mode. When he needs to see the paint in grayscale he just turn the black layer on. In fact he is painting on the layer underneath.

    I know many pros who use this technique. In fact, sometimes clients will provide the rough 3D (especially for FPS games and platforming games such as Tomb Raider, etc; because level layout is super important). I don't use this technique much, but it is a great process....as long as you can model the base design as fast as somebody draws. 3D tends to be slower, but the quality is much higher. So it's a trade-off. Take a look at Hawkprey's work (epic games)...great 2d/3d hybrids.

    We actually interview students to see where their head is at. We want students who like to design first. Having a strong drawing ability helps, but it is NOT the most important part prior to enrolling. One can express a design via drawings, 3d models, physical models, words, etc. I've seen students who can't draw at all become excellent designers with professional quality portfolios simply because they worked hard and had the ability to design.

    i think in a previous video he created a new layer strictly for colour and set the layer to 'colour' mode from the dropdown box. i think that makes the colours he chooses overlay any tonal value on the layers beneath. i think that's right, but then again i may have misinterpreted your question :)

    Think of "Art" as something personal while "Design" could be viewed as creating a product for someone else. Say one person made painting for themselves but another person coincidentally made the same exact painting for a client. Even though they are the same painting, one is considered art while the other is considered design. Even the thought process that goes behind designing and doing your own art could be similar, but the intention is what's different.

  • @Fengdesigns

    @insepto7
    There's an advantage and disadvantage to age. The bonus is that your brain is more exposed to the world; it's mature, knows a lot of stuff, have good analysis skills, etc. All of which are important in design. Once you learn to draw, it comes together.
    The negative side is usually your energy level. Younger designers in their 20s can do all-nights and work 7 days a week. Someone in their 30s will have a hard time keeping up...and that *might* effect your career path.

    i can see how recording the detailing process could "seem" boring. But honestly I find doing the sky and the base values to be the most boring part. Once I get to the detailing and I can see an item go from a blur to a believable person, animal or structure, I can't stop. Values make the shape and part of the feel. But if you discount production time and just paint I think the detailing is the most fun. I guess with the amount of artwork you do though, it starts to feel a little bit different.

For example if the sunlight comes directly from a person behind then the inside of the year would look really saturated with red (if you have good sources could u share them

    Hey, Feng! I've seen a few artists use basic 3D models set up in to use as a base to paint over and incorporate elements into a concept art piece. When it comes to vehicles, I'm a better 3D modeler than 2D artist, I want to use some 3D vehicle elements to incorporate into my work (esp. as I learn to become better at painting vehicles). Do you use 3D elements sometimes? And if so, do you do basic lighting on the base 3D models within the modeler, or do you paint all the lighting in 2D?

But my problem is that I started late in this industry because different circunstancies. I'm in the thirties and one stuff of all this industry is that it seems to be only for peolple in twenties.
    Do I have some opportunity to become professional being "old"?

  • @Fengdesigns

    @999yuiop
    You can actually self-teach everything. However, the problem usually is the time-management/discipline issue. Most people won't force themselves to do homework every night and get 4 hrs of sleep and practice months after month. Therefore, the learning process becomes much slooooooower than someone who is doing it everyday under the pressure of school.

    @TheKunoj Seriously? They aren't teaching you how to draw they are advancing your skills so that you can raise to a "higher level" You have to be able to somewhat draw and know the basic and they teach you the advanced stuff.

    You can't do this to this detail with a mouse. You can try, but it's very difficult to have the same amount of control. If you're serious about digital painting, then you will have to dish out the money to get the tools necessary. It's costly, but a tablet for a person wanting to paint digitally is a necessity.
