"What 3D software did you use?"
is the new "What brush did you use?"
I put Design Cinema on the side as I draw my own stuff. Design Cinema, your best drawing companion!
really want to see the 3D mock up process.
Thank you Feng for the time and effort you put into making these precious videos ! New episode definitely made my day (as it always does) !
What a great Friday!!!!!!
I'd have loved to see some of the 3D building process. It looks like something that takes a long time to make as a single person.
Apart of that, I really appreciate the portfolio tips!
Thank you for these great videos, Feng~
i do agree with you dude
What I'm curious about is how much of it is 3D vs photobashing on top of 3D.
Like I get that you'll end up doing that anyways but I'm more curious of whether he just models the stuff in whatever 3d software and doesn't even bother with textures and materials until he gets into photoshop or if he'll take the time to actually UV unwrap and texture things in 3d before photoshop.
Not so long for someone 3d architectural modeling skillful
Agree, would love to see 3d process.
Hah! I was about to scroll down to ask the same exact question and it's right at the top. I'd also love to see the process on one of these 3D mockups. Like what you should take into account when you're doing one of these for a 2D-artist (or yourself if you're doing both). Btw. Awesome content, as always!
your one of the most helpful artist's on youtube, love your work and personality. keep up the great work Feng
why is it that when this man talks, I just want to see he and hear him talk. When he paints and says they are really loose yet he paints a beautiful painting. The magic of concept art.
my favorite subscription
Almost to Design Cinema 100!
If you count the few Design Cinema - Let's Design episodes, it'd be 101 by now (not count the Podcast). Don't know why they're on other category...
Oh my...the process of evolution is one of the most precious things ❤️ You are amazing !!!
I know there are hundreds of videos out there explaining how to build a 3d environment but I was hoping you could show us your progress since the way you talk about it seems really effective.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Your English is best understandable for me. Thank you for all your long running dedications.
Feng thank you so much for all the hard work you do on these design cinemas. It helps people like me out a ton.
Feng, thank you so much for this video! I've been trying to get into the Industry for 3 years now, and I have had NO idea what the companies want from me. Its been very frustrating and discouraging so far, but you explained it all so thoroughly, so simply in this video, that now I have a direction for my next few personal projects! Thank you so much for sharing all that you know with everyone so freely!
your videos have helped me immensely the last 8 years
Feng, the industry info you gave at the beginning is very much appreciated. Thank you.
Great content as always, your channel has brought me back to visual arts, ty very much mr Feng
wonderful episode! Thanks a lot for putting so much effort into those design cinema series.
I find the information in these videos to be very useful in other areas other than art and I love watching them.
Great design. The wood used to build the structures remains a mystery. It has to come from not so cold places that have to be vast and a lot better fitting to support life.
these last few episodes have been incredibly useful, really appreciate them. but man Feng, you look like you need a vacation
Lol he needed a vacation when I started watching him years ago :D
I love this setting. It deserves its own game.
I think everyone would love to see some 3D
This is invaluable information thank you so much!
loved the boink, boink and the snake thing.
I just like to listen to you when I'm drawing ^^ Wish I could go to your school though,..
yeah, that's the game. Setoko: World of Shadows
no its called.. Sudoku: Shadows Count Twice
@@Leo-hk6qg Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice
Nope, you fools, its called Seiko: Shadows watch twice
Seppuku: suicide I've already died
Feng, use OBS studio for recording. I've been recording days worth of 4k screens and havent had any crashes ever! Screw camtasia! :)
excellent insight... thanks!
Yay new ep
would love to see how you gather your reference, a video on just that would be awesome!
Check out episodes 38 and 52 maybe?
@@rjmetzger7885 thanks.
Thanks for share this.
Every time Feng said his sketch looks terrible, I look at mine and start questioning life.
can we have some 3d building process and which software were used in this piece ?
Since its concept you can use whatever software works for you : from Zbrush to Blender or even Photoshop 3d.
3d is very easy to get into nowadays because of the amount of professional tools available and because the tools are more advanced and many of the tedious processes are automated.
In this case, Feng mentioned in the video that most of the 3d was done in Photoshop. (latest versions of Photoshop have 3d built in)
at ua-cam.com/video/oOu7ndw8Ouw/v-deo.html Feng says that most of the texturing, lighting and color work was done in Photoshop. He doesn't specify which 3D he used but my guess would be Modo. Personally I would make basic materials and lighting in 3D as it's faster and also it's more safer if art director wants to change the camera angle in which case you don't have to redo the lighting and textures in photoshop for another angle.
@@ISNDWhale Where does one get these 3d textures?
@@TalentHouseAd One place to start is check Level up! resources on their website www.fusroda.com/resources
This reminded me of 2 things: 1) Cyberpunk, with the snake things going around being a feature in many Cyberpunk works. 2) Metro Exodus, and in fact so much that I would call this idea "Metro Exodus: Japan" or something like that :D
Feng forgot he's creating a cold environment at some point designing the interiors.
Too bad did not follow his own rules
They're poor, not sure feuadal japan had special houses for winter
Woo! Today is a great day
Thanks for taking the time to go over that stuff at the start! What software did you use for the 3D passes?
Excellent video. Question: Would you only put the final 3 pictures in the portfolio or would you also add some of the process pictures as well?
Those textures look like they have been added in 3D as simple UV textures.
They don't even look UVd. Probably box mapped. All the horizontal beams have a vertical wood grain, which makes no sense. No sane person would UV them that way.
awesome, looks like something out of sekiro
New ep!!!!!!!
"they're using egypt, they're using greece, they are using vikings"
me in 2020:
*damn he has forseen AC Valhalla !!!!*
very great episode by the way ;)
I know it was in one of your videos but I can't remember which. Would love to find the video or have a refresher on how you made your 3D grids.
WHAT SORCERY IS THIS-TWO VIDEOS IN LESS THAN A MONTH?! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO FENG?!
Were moving to another building...
Do you ask Zhu about Feng? ;D
We don't deserve this XD
love the work, working on my own video game so trying to get a idea on what does what btw if 2019 is suppose to be some of the best times how do you explain things like the last mass effect game for instance?
Wow this episode was awesome thanks a lot tenga I really wish I could go to fzd but I’m stuck in nyc :|.
please make a video timelapse i don't understand english i love to watching ur art
What program did you use to build the 3d? What did you use to texture and render the 3d?
Do you build all the 3D assets, or use existing ones too?
I always been told concept art is fast, is this 3d workflow fast enough to do concept? This looks like building the game itself in 3d.
Do you think that 3 painting of that level of detail in 3 days is not fast?
3D's really quick if you have sketches to work off and aren't making production assets.
No UVing, no gameplay constraints, no optimisation, no high detail, no light baking, you can just raytrace everything.
You can also copy paste lots of things. Paint over any bad areas.
anyon knows what 3d program he used for it? I can use sketchup, wonder if it can kinda work
I'm getting errors while loading the images from his blog (the blogspot one) . Anybody else is having this problem too?
Hey, Feng! So, how much do people in the Industry look for people who concept out props? Like If i had a sheet of 10 doors, 10 boxes, 10 floor tiles, and 10 hallway options for a single space station, and I included it in my portfolio, would that get art director's attention? As opposed to doing doing, say, an environment painting?
I think the golden age of indie games is just beginning : Consider how many people are overworked to the bone in the industry, and on top of that they don't really get to 'live the dream' as Feng did when he was starting out.
On the other end of this: Unreal Engine 4, Unity and Godot are all leading game-engines that are available for free, Blender 2.8 is an all-in-one professional grade 3d software available for free. All of these set the platform for more indie studios to emerge.
To make money, Indie studios still need to craft a good IP, good design, so its true that this requires more advanced thinking since audiences are more informed than they were 30 years ago, that said, the amount of risk in making an indie title is substantially lower, and because of that the design is often more interesting.
For sure they have data bse as a company with all assets already made and this is a thing to consider, make a data base with 3d general things, of course if you look at the 3d some off them repeat, probably they did the frame wood after theyr new design conform with the references, after they took some wood stock, placed hthere, some courtains, scaled, and so on. If you are junior, starting this thing, now way in two days... But we speak here about experience and years of gattering stuff, team of people..But this is the process, on your own you will have more days, another prices (lower) so if you are doing what Feng says in some longer period of time, if the reesult are these in maybe two weeks, damn, for some studios, smaller ones, you are a guy that they need... FZD, one of the best chanels. :)
Been a minute.
Sir i want to know how to set perpactive for concept art,, plz suggest m
which 3D software is this? for 3d, texturing and render? I'd like to get this results!
Just use Blender. It can do box mapping and has decent rendering in Eevee and Cycles.
I used to use Maya for years, which costs $1500 a year (I was on student licence, so it was free) but Blender is faster, free and more versatile for concept.
Unless it's Zbrush or 3Dcoat, theres no real reason to buy 3D software for concept art.
Check out HeavyPoly.
CC0 Textures is good for free textures. Materialise is free and can convert jpegs to PBR materials too.
First
Edit: lol nvm.
Love getting these videos though, they really make my day.
ure first lol
How many years you been drawing
He has been a professional for over 22 years, so def 30+ years.
could your team give us blender lessons ? haha
So basically the late 90's was the "boomer" era of concept art...
isn't Japan more aquaculture based? They haven't had enough deer hunters for years maybe decades, to reduce the population as all hunters do, thus overpopulation and damage to crops. Same here in USA, elk are hated by farmers, ranchers so DFW ships them to the east coast to avoid their demise and damage to value.
4-5 hours in 3d. WTF
90% real 10% made up reminds me of how titanfall 2 campaign is created somehow
