That music is far better. Well done in taking the criticisms. Great episode.
I'm super happy that you are making videos again!
Didnt expect to see a mc youtuber here XD
Yo i found my idol here
Feng, could you do a video specifically about working as a freelancer? You have already mentioned some points through your videos, but I think there's a lot of things that are still very obscure for most of us watchers, especialy when entering (or trying to enter) in the industry. Things like how to charge, how to reach the clients, how to netociate, etc.
Thank you! Your videos are always enlightening! Cheers!
6 year later and still very much relevant. I'll be showing them to my grand kids.
Even when you watch the same video several time you still learning something new every single time.
You are exceptional Fz.
great improvement on the sound!
curaxu love your minecraft builds :) cool to see you watch FZD too
I love how designers talk. Just like my concept and design teacher. Always come up with these crazy ideas with everything that is being proposed to them. You can tell that these people can generate ideas
+bloodsord9 me too brotha. Designers live in their own little worlds in their head, and when one gets to see inside the mind of another designer, it is just exciting to see
I can relate to the sudden burst of improvement story.
I have been drawing horses for years, and they didn't look nice in the beginning. Suddenly, I produced a drawing that I didn't even believe I made. I was stunned by it myself.
The pop out tips is a HUGE addition. That type of 'how we did it' knowledge is a big bonus. Great idea. Thanks for implementing it.
Yeah, this intro music is much better :)
The sound, clarity, and graphics are great additions to this series - fine work as always.
Another fab vid. Thank you for the time you give to teach like this for free. Much appreciated!
Great production value on the new videos, total re-branding. Always a pleasure.
Thanks for you saying that there can be "leaps" in quality. Although I am not a painter, rather a 3D Modeler, this really gives me hope. It's the same thing in 3D. In the beginning, I couldn't even make some clouds look good and I failed a lot and didn't finish projects. Then someone wanted me to do a kitchen for archviz. Although the project failed due to planning and the lack of deadlines, it gave me a boost in modeling. Then I participated in a competition. It gave me a boost in lighting. When I look back, I've learned a lot. There are the same "leaps" in quality- you just have to stick through to bad parts and go on. So thanks for saying it. It can be really motivating listening to people and having the same experience.
I don't even draw, but this is so interesting to listen to.
Your awesome as always teacher Feng, learn a lot every vids, Thanks.
Woooh, I didn't think the new one would come out this soon! :^D
So glad to see you back with Design Cinema !
I literally checked my YT chanels everyday for 3 months haha
Great video. Since your environment thumbnails video I've been doing a lot of thumbnails and I enjoy it a lot. Like you said in this video, it takes away some of the stress and pressure which I get when I try and do a more complete painting that will take me up to 10 hours. I also find it's been helping me to learn to indicate detail without actually having to paint it in.
I love design cinema.
Feng, as an architecture student i find your advice very useful in developing my presentation panels and very enlightening for a design student in general. Thank you for the great videos!
FZD is the best UA-cam channel out there!
You're insight in these videos, is always inspirational and motivating. For me personally though, ever since the very first videos, your explanation of things, always makes the goal and dream of being an artist and earning an living from creating images seem easy and achievable, but what you really do is just build massive confidence through your breakdowns, and exposing a process. Thank you
thanks for the motivation boost feng , got really depressed for the last 2 weeks , feel a lot better now ! :D
Holy moly, two videos in two weeks. I'll have to start checking back here regularly again. Great video also, thanks.
Love the new sound on the intro ^^
FZ, you are such an amazing teacher!!! I love your advice and how funny you are and you make it personal.
feeling so much positive after this! thanks!
"You have to not fear you're doing bad work...." thumbs up!
Its nice to have access to professional education.
It was nice seeing you at GDC, Feng. Lets keep up the good work!
Fantastic episode, Feng! I love the new graphical elements applied in the videos, it makes it that much more professional and eye grabbing. As always, your lessons, tips and tricks are golden, keep it up!
@FZD I really enjoyed this Episode and must admit that I learned a lot. It's so refreshing to have the opportunity to educate although opportunities of of time and money were not present in the past to do so with expensive schooling. You're working methods are superb.
Excellent improvement to the overall quality of the videos!!! Love the topic as well, mixing surroundings is a great exercise for any level of artist.
you are an awesome human being! Thanks for share expensive materials for free
Love all the new branding of this series. Great, extremely helpful video as always!
Your a Amazing Teacher' - I've had many art teachers over many many years, you do a really great job - don't change a thing
Oh damn, that sound was so classy! Looooove it! Huge improvement, felt very professional.
thank you very much for this video. Fear definitely can make someone doubt their work.I feel as artist we should always have such great work constantly, but completely forgot that everyone has gone through the beginning stages of making bad art and with time it starts to improve and its one of the best feelings :D thanks for your words of wisdom
Thanks so much for these videos, Feng! You're an inspiration and every one of these videos helps me work harder!
Wow new video already, new music is alright. The DC tips are neat too.
Great episode and so much good stuff on approaching thumbnails once again. :o) Thank you Feng and FZD crew! Love the new sound and the visuals added, definitely fits a lot better with the narration and the whole video.
The music reminds of the Ocean's movies for some reason :P Really nice episode ! Thanks Feng! :))
Really good video, one of the best ones I've seen on this channel. I like the tips in the bottom left and little things like that!
stress and fear got me couple days ago, thank you for eye opening!)
thank you so much and have a nice day.
Great to see these vids again really helps me a lot. Looking forward to the next in this series.
Q&A: At what age did you go to art Center and did you go for the art school and not for self study because you needed a visum? Did you stay in L.A and work for studios/freelance or did you move back to singapore? Sorry if theyre too much related to your life, but it resembles mine really well. Thanks for all these awesome videos, youre the best!
The music is so cool on this episode! :D
My favourite episode of Design cinema in a long time! I found the advice and breakdown of the process of learning to be super useful, and the exercise is a really nice one. Cheers bud.
This video makes me feel good about putting my worst books out. At least I learn from th experiences of production. About the stock inspiration and example folders I had made. I found the same issues. Over load of stuff and nothing thought out.
I love the improvements to the videos, you are awesome. Keep it up, you're inspiring so many people.
So pumped! Thank you FZD :)
On this episode the approach (roughly) was to mix buildings and environments. Another cool mixings, and which could be approached on future episodes, could be cultures, animals, time periods and many others.
Question For Q&A
In the past few months / half a year, I've drawn more than ever, and have improved to some degree, but I never feel like I've drawn enough. But at the same time I look at everything and do everything with design in mind, though sometimes I have put off drawing to do other things. I am 16, and remember how Feng once mentioned that this should be the age to just enjoy life more, but does this mean I am procrastinating, and is the concept industry for me? I can't imagine doing anything else.
How do you start your own freelance business? I want to, but am starting from square one. Should I get a new or used Cintiq? How do I generate business and clientele? You are one of the best role models I have of doing this successfully, and I would love to know a little bit more on how you built your business. Thanks.
Thanks for this tutorial, your awesome!
I am no artist of any kind, but these videos are still amazingly enjoyable! Well made sir! :)
feng zhu is love.
feng zhu is life
Q&A: Where do you think the video game industry is headed in the next couple of years? Is it going to be a viable industry to work in, or do you think it will become a sort of sink-or-swim industry, like cinema seems to be right now? Also, thanks for the great youtube channel, it has really helped me a lot. :)
Awesome video.
better intro! love these damn videos. can't wait till there are more of them. as always, thank you
Thank you for another awesome episode! The previous intro music was like a thumbnail? I like the final product :) nice and chilled.
Thank You!
how do you find all your reference material, any tips on how to widen or deepen the range of your image base?
Great Stuff!
Wow new one already?! I could get used to this :)
Question for Q&A: In interviews some professional concept artists say that in the near future concept artists will have to work in 3D software (like Z-brush or Modo) and even a little animation. Could this be true? If I'm a student should I also concentrate on learning to use a 3D modeling software?
Check out Philosopher Zhu over here, LOL! Your analogies are simply amazing. I really appreciate them.
thank you very much!
Q&A: Where do you get good pictures for concept? Btw awesome painting and nice video😄
wait wait.. next week? you actually gonna start uploading these 1 per week?! man that would be beyond awesome!
Awesome episode, it's very encouraging for those students that aren't that confident yet.
Also if I may add, if there will be cool pans like at the end of this video, could it be slightly slower? At certain speeds it blurs up a bit and gets uncomfortable.
great intro!
Bravo!
Awesome! Would love to see some horror inspired areas/interiors;)
great intro!!! Im glad that you are taking more afford for this videos :> I hope its gonna pay you of
Woooh, it makes me so happy :D
Ever since Feng started drinking coffee instead of water, the videos have been released in shorter intervals.
Anyone else see the connection... eh..eh Keep up the coffee drinking Feng! ;)
Yeah very nice. :)
Nice intro!
I really like popup tips.
Q&A: Do you think that illusion of fonctionality is enough for a concept artist or real functionality is a necessity?
Yunus Samil Tufekci Well that depends on what your concept is for, most of the time for games/movies you would want implied functionality as it gives you more freedom to come up with original ideas.
At 25:03, How does Feng brighten the thumbnail? It looks like a large brush in combination with a lighting or layer mode? I have seen it used many times to brighten/darken areas, add atmosphere etc.
Any ideas?
Man I love this channel. Thanks Feng.
Question: Do you amend your process as you work nowadays? Or do you feel that with your vast experience, you have created a sweet spot within your workflow now? And stick with it?
Loving the new branding of the DC channel videos too. Looks very professional... even down to the funky music :)
Cheers
D
I like this new format, very cool and informative like before but MORE :D
Is this gonna be a new thing - DC every week?
I love these kind of videos really motivates me!
Question tho, what would be your searchwords you typ in google for the reference you show on the screen. The reference looks soooooo good and the scale is amazing. I can't seem to find reference thats on par with that.
Thanks!
I think we need smooth jazz intro next
I'm just a bit confused about Art Deco you mentioned last episode and I learned some in school. The bauhaus movement seems to be classified as being part of Art Deco. What I learn from bauhaus is it is a way of doing things and seems to be the beginning of industrial design. So is Art Deco just a blanket term for that time period?
what im finding hard, being a green newbie, not just a newbie, is that my pen strokes are inconsistent and dont track the way i want to see them. i have reduced the working area on my tablet but still finding some strokes hard to achieve. the second thing is the type of brush. Im using CS2 as i have all my photography actions stored, but still just need heaps of practice. Do you have a video where i can learn certain pen and brush types and how to achieve desired brush strokes.
How are you sampling the colors from other images? What keyboard shortcuts are you pressing?
What brush are you using? I like the texture it has.
Hi Feng, I really want to be a concept artist like you but im new with digital art. Ever since i was a kid, i always copy things and draw them on my book.
Now, i am quite confident in copying things and drawing them traditionally, sketch book and pen. Does this method help me improve too? I dont feel confident in making my own things and the necessary next steps that i should take to produce my own work..
I hope you can read this message. Thank you for your time.
Agus Yunanto thank you so much
again the music is a bit too much ^^ but otherwise really cool episode, thank you Feng for the great tips on not worrying too much! :)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So just to be clear, everything you did in this episode, including the keyboard short cuts ect.. used to make things easier are all covered in previous episodes?
Can you do a drawing in an iPad I just want to see how professional it looks
the game you were talking about is uncharted 3, i gotchu fam
Did I hear correctly that it only took you 2,5 hours to complete that illustration?
I'll need to find some of your videos where you also go trough that part then, wish you did it in this one too, because it's amazing how it transforms from a sketch like that!
how do your student physical health go over the year, I see amazing coming out form the students but with the amount of sleep and caffeine there on, how don't burn out after month, do they just adapted? Is that simple, I come form a exercise science background and anything time I done studies or looked up reports on these lifestyle it usually downhill with most demographics, but schools like your own seem to trive this approach, with puzzle me, has there be any reports done in the past?
Yeah, I heard that the school is very intense since it is an accelerated curriculum. Its just one year which is awesome but you are operate on little sleep. They have a 2 week break in each of the 3 semesters though so that helps you recharge I think :)
i just got my intuos pro and after only a few days of drawing the nib began to wear down and scratch the surface of the pad rather than slide over it...
any tips on that?
yeh, Hi Feng Zhu (or your staff) i have a question about using your own photograph's pixels in commercial work. Since you are the one who closed the shutter over the lens, are you allowed to use the image's pixels to create works, even if its noticeable that it, for instance, a photo of someone's garden statue?
I know you've done photo-collaging before with the Elderscrolls concept art- Ep.70 but I dont know if you were using Google images or your own snappys. Nice work dude.
