I picked up this camera and have a A7R4 coming in.......will keep one of them, and return the other. I know these operate in 2 different arenas, but I am cross-shopping ! The flip screen is compelling for a variety of reasons including as a vlogging unit, the resolution (vs the A7S3) is decent, and of course the compactness is fantastic, in addition to the removal of the artificial time-limits from the video. Several downsides too, as detailed in the video. Will make a final determination after giving the A7R4 a whirl.
The coffee shop video was really cool! But I hate to say it... Quay Hu is a shill. Not even a single minor negative thing to say. I am a Sony guy. My only ILC cameras are Sonys, and I have an a7 III. So I'm not a hater. Still, there is no front dial. Fewer custom buttons are not "clean"...they are "lacking". The new menu is nowhere to be seen. This camera should have been several hundred dollars cheaper. For $1,499, I'd be impressed. For more than that, not so much. Dan brought up some minor points of criticism, or even just luke-warm feelings. That's what is needed from any critic who should be taken seriously. Not to hate on things for no reason, but to mention the one memory card slot...the lack of a front dial...the lack of custom buttons. No, the dial on the back doesn't make up for them, as my a7 III has custom buttons and a back dial that has just as many functions. The tracking should be celebrated. The fully-articulated screen is much overdue. But unwavering praise so that Sony may let you test their next camera a week ahead is something that can destroy your credibility. Dan Watson walks that fine line (though still trying to please too much), but Quay Hu...he must have thought he was filming a Sony commercial.
Can you compare to an a6600. Price is quite close as the most feature function APSC to the smallest full frame. Both eye auto focus for video. Both 24mp. Would love to hear your thoughts and see results from the 2
Man yet another awesome review from the Dan Man... I’m not a big video guy but every time I see Dan’s intros... makes me want to run out there and start taking videos...
Sony needs to make some lightweight (regardless of aperture compromises), high quality zooms for this. The 28-60mm has the concept, it's just not wide enough or long enough to be a "walking around lens".
@@mofahimm that's a good move . That view finder is way to small look at it . This would have been a hard sell even at $1500 let alone $1800 . A7ii is 998 with a lens now that's a great deal

First, that opening at the coffee shop, I'm not sure if it makes me want the camera or the espresso machine more? I love the "rangefinder" style of this camera and the compactness. I was looking at the Z5 with an adapter for Leica M lenses which would be the best image quality but the Sony has a BSI sensor and it is smaller and would be pocket-able with L lenses. What are your thoughts about Leica m lenses on this camera?
Thanks man! So I haven't used Leica lenses...or vintage lenses so I'm probably not the best person to ask. The way I see it is if you want a "look", those lenses are great. If you want focus speed/sharpness, the Sony options are the best. But not everyone likes a crazy sharp lens
Hi DAN! Alot of us wanna make the switch from Canon. I have a mix of EF lens from Canon, Sigma, and mostly from Tamron. I can't seem to find anyone testing the MC-11 adaptor on Tamron on these new Sony cameras (for video and photo). Any chance you have any experience pairing Tamron lenses and MC-11? An interesting video idea could be: "HOW TO SWTICH TO SONY" or maybe "SHOULD I SELL MY CANON GLASS". (p.s. I watched your older MC-11 video, seems like sigma glass is good to go, and mixed results with canon glass).
I bought the Sony A7III a week ago and never used it. I am planning to return it because I heard a lot of them will get a broken shutter. Now I am thinking to get the A7C but I heard it doesn’t have such a good image stabilization. I don’t know what to do.
I'd honestly go with the A7III more if you are primarily a photo shooter and the A7C more if you are mostly a video shooter. Image stabilization is about the same on both cameras...neither are great compared to Canon or Panasonic but it is way better than not having any
Big choice between the A7iii and the A7C... touch screen focus, when recording, can I touch screen a different object for it to change focus smoothly in video?
Seems like they copied the Panasonic gx8 camera body but they didn’t do a good job at it. The Panasonic is way more functional. Dan is right by calling it an entry level camera in that it’s severely lacking in buttons and a front dial and dual memory slots. However it should have been priced as such and not $1800. Entry level cameras should be under $1000.

Man, I didn't know photographers can make that much money. You buy a $1800 as a fun secondary camera. Although, $1500 is maybe a right price for this camera.
Well, if you do this as a business (ie photographer), you need to think relative. We likely already own lenses so no extra cost there. You absolutely should have a backup camera so the difference between say a $1400 camera and $1800 over the course of the 2-4 years you use it is WAY less than most people spend on coffee. Also, keep in mind that the camera only costs $1800 if you keep it forever. If I buy it for $1800 and sell it in 2 years for $1000, it only cost me a net $800 or $400/year which isn't difficult to justify. So think of it in business terms and it makes more sense. For the average mom/dad that just wants a better camera, it is actually a tougher purchase. First of all they keep it longer or forever so the net cost will be higher since they rarely sell gear and they also have to buy lenses which could be $500 but should be more like $1500+. It's way cheaper to purchase this as a fun secondary camera for the next 2 years as a photographer!

How to destroy a camera by removing one critical dial for no reason. No joystick is also a bit annoying. Stills photographers shouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
To emphasize my point: My camera store sells the Canon RP for 822€ including the EF adapter. It is as light and almost as compact as the A7C, has similar specs minus the IBIS, but better button layout, better EVF, much better touch UI, and all that for 1200 bucks less.
@SwitchRich first of all you have to understand the difference between 4 stops more and 4 times more .. if Canon has 5 stops , 4 times more means Sony will have 20 stops ( 4 times more ) Sony 4 stops more means , it will be 5 +4 = 9 stops for sony you get it ?
I'm guessing this camera was supposed to be out before the A7SIII or it was just easier to reuse the firmware from the A7III since these cameras have almost identical internals
@Heiwa: Yeah, you should not regress. Even if there is a price difference. And especially because it's firmware. But Dan may be right that its internals are probably very close to those of an a7 III, and that might not support the new menu. Even so, it breeds disappointment when a company does things like this. I hope that the future a7-series cameras don't regress back to a tilting screen only. And this also bodes poorly for a much-improved a7 IV coming in at the a7 III price, if the a7c is what they are putting out now at still a high price.

A more basic camera for a beginner. Like the 2 tones. Tooo pricey!!!!!
So its real!!!
Apparently lol
Coffee video is just WOW! Cant you give some lessons how to shoot like that?
Seems to be damned by faint praise here.
wow.. coffee video.. haha
How to destroy a camera by removing one critical dial for no reason. No joystick is also a bit annoying. Stills photographers shouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
Nice sponsor.
What about ibis...?
In body image stabilization. Just means that the stabilization is built in the camera
... and you have the gyro data to edit the stabilization in post.
To emphasize my point: My camera store sells the Canon RP for 822€ including the EF adapter. It is as light and almost as compact as the A7C, has similar specs minus the IBIS, but better button layout, better EVF, much better touch UI, and all that for 1200 bucks less.
@SwitchRich 4 times , , dont overrate .. certainly sony has better sensor till R5 ..a few stops better , thats it
@SwitchRich first of all you have to understand the difference between 4 stops more and 4 times more ..
if Canon has 5 stops , 4 times more means Sony will have 20 stops ( 4 times more )
Sony 4 stops more means , it will be 5 +4 = 9 stops for sony
you get it ?
@SwitchRich 4 times the dynamic range is a little exxagerated, don’t you think?
@SwitchRich my maths , your Mathis ..nothing like that ..mathematics is same for all ..what I've calculated is perfectly correct ...🤣🤣🤣🤣
hello mr dan watson please give me this camera. i need a camera, i dont own one and i try my best to create content. intagram @vtxco
Not my camera! Major mistake by Sony
Great b-roll... Absolutely god awful review !
The old User Interface is a total deal breaker.
Canons UI is the best one in my opinion...
Pretend the SIII doesn't exist and this camera comes off a bit better. But yeah, the old menu is a downer but definitely not a deal breaker for me
Dan Watson but why. It makes no sense. When you drop new firmware that’s supposed to be standard going forward
Overpriced piece of junk
Do we need to rebalance a gimbal for the kit lens range 28-60 ?
