the thing is with this ultra-light cameras is that you need a gimbal for video work - while a fully rigged cam can get away with the handheld operation. As a7iii owner you are right there is hardly a difference. If the camera had advanced stabilization like on the A7SIII I might consider the camera.

Genuinely impressed and happy that Sony are simply going for it. What a year for them, Sony a7S III, Sony a7C and the PlayStation 5. Yeah, Sony’s taking no prisoners, and I’m on board.
THE BEST CAMERA REVIEWER BAR-NONE !! I bought this in May 2023 as a B camera for my Sony a7Siii along with the Smallrig cage to give it some weight and a much deeper silicone grip. AMAZING! Yes it has some limitations but my big A camera has all the bells and whistles. I put the baby camera on a tripod and it records my wide shots while I run and gun with my a7Siii - same colour science and great low-light sensitivity so I can safely push my ISO! Very very happy so thanks Gerald!! 🇨🇦📸😎
I’m running an a6400 now and this is literally the perfect upgrade to full frame. All I do is vlog. This should still work on my DJI Ronin SC gimbal. For UA-camrs like me this is awesome. Just wish it was 10 bit.
You sure about that? I also have an a6400 but the price here is off putting. Especially with the rolling shutter issue. I love the a6400 but the rolling shutter is rough.
Don Jacobs it’s so rough it can ruin a simple pan if you have a scene with vertical lines, or edges, or texture, or... it can ruin any shot that involves any sort of movement.
I forgot to post this over a year ago, but maybe someone will find it useful: I think the difference in the audio gain is probably a result of the location and orientation of the mics on the two cameras. The A7iii mics are located on the top of the camera and aimed upward. The result is what most people would call an "omni-directional" pattern. On the A6n00 bodies, and on the A7C, the mics are located on the front of the body and face forward, like on most camcorders. The result is a forward oriented cardiod pickup pattern. The reason you needed the increased gain on the A7c was because the cameras were on the table with you behind them. This is part of the reason I bought the a6400. I find the pickup pattern more useful for most video work. In some situations, adding a 3rd party mic actually does nothing to improve the sound, and getting a stereo recording through the camera mics is a nice bonus. (Added Nov 24, 9:16) On further thought, if you put the cameras on tripods, at about 2 - 3 ft and aimed at you, you should find the levels roughly favour the A7c. If a camera puts the mics on top and aimed up, it attenuates noise from feet, but picks up more from ceiling reflections and overhead stuff like leaves in overhead tree branches, aircraft and bird.
I don't know why people have an issue with this body not having dual card slots. It's pretty clearly not intended for professional photographers and therefore has no need to have 2 slots. If 2 slots was important to you, then you're probably not interested in trying to reduce the size this much and would be way more inclined to have an a7iii for a myriad of other reasons
This is not a replacement I’m so tired of seeing people acting like Sony hurt them personally with this camera. This is meant to complement your Siii or riii or riv. This is for people who don’t want to carry their full gear. This paired with a pancake lens is the street photographers dream. This is not your hybrid beast meant for making the big bucks on. People will pay 4000 for a compact Leica and nobody bashes them. Why is this any different?
@@RiceCubeTech I completely agree with, they are for different purposes. However, I was happy to sacrifice a bunch of specific A7SIII features for the cheaper price, but it seems I'm gonna have to bankrupt myself. 😅
Great info (as always), Gerald! One question for you regarding color/color science... how would you compare the a7C's color to that from the a7Siii? Considering an a7C body as a "B" cam to complement two a7Siii's (whose color is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!), and wondered what you thought.

Caldera APS-C doesn’t get as much love because too many people think in terms of “bigger is better”. It is an unfortunate fashion trend because there are times when smaller sensors with increased depth of field are the best choice.
Great review Gerald! The only thing which was not mentioned is that the a7c records gyro data, which then is stored inside every movie file. With Catalyst Browse you can create amazingly stable footage - i was blown away when i saw it - the stabilization often looks much better than any other digital stabilization - see Brandon Li's video on it. Only a7siii, a7c, zv1 and fx9 currently offer this feature. The a7iii at this point does not record gyro data. Downsides of this stabilization are loss of motion blur and - as it is with every digital stabilization - a crop and therefore loss of some pixels - which in my view are acceptable trade offs.
this is how a professional review should be, I saw lots of review about this camera, most of them just criticize the lacking of innovation and similarity of A73, but neglect the meaning behind to the camera industry.
Uh no. You’re looking at it compared to their full size bodies. This is not that. This is hot a replacement and you’re looking at the product from your life. Not someone who would find this. The tech to make it this small costs a lot. Offering it for half the price would make zero sense and have zero incentive for Sony to make that. For the people who want to do low key street photography this is perfect. No other camera this small will compare to the lowlight and straight up stills quality.
@@RiceCubeTech any nicer, faster lens and you cant even hold that tiny body because it will be too front heavy. And you will need to add a cage and grips. I don't know, even the RP was pushing it. Fantastic overview as always from the purple studio that is Gerald Undone. 🎉👍 I liked how you broke down the differences, changes and similarities to the A7III. While I’m going to hold out for the A74, I can definitely see how a A7CII in the future could become the perfect budget full frame camera.
Exactly. First gen products are for proof of concept 2nd and third gen are for perfecting what was there first gen. Glad to see someone isn’t just blind hating
@@RiceCubeTech I also think, that this camera was in development for a longer time. They did not know how the powerful technology of an A7S3 would perform in such a small body and therefore went with the A73 tech. Next time it will probably be more up to date. Hopefully with better EVF, bigger grip and maybe the dial at the front with two custom buttons.
Huge disappointment. No 10 bit, no 4k60, no new menu, bad rolling shutter, worse viewfinder positioning... After the a7siii I wasn't expecting this bad of a camera.
Instead of releasing a7iv, they had to come out with a rebadged a7iii for video... I dont understand, it wouldve been a better move to release something that matches the canon r6 at lower price
One of the big problems is that everyone is using a variation of the same sensor, the IMX410. It is a decent sensor, but it has the problem that it can only read out the sensor at 40 fps(open gate) and 48 fps(16:9). You need to crop to get 60 fps. To about 2.3:1 aspect ratio(zcam f6 has like an 2.37:1 I think) . Or an aps-c crop(pannasonic s1 and s1h.) The 8 bit isn't the sensor of course, sigma pulls 12 bit raw out of it.
Gerald - thank you SO much for the practical Dynamic Range example shots at 12:30 - windows & garage interior, absolutely awesome having talent + skintones in the garage shot - would love to see these shots & similar going forward + compared with other cameras ( Sony A7Siii , Canon R5 , FX6 , cinema EOS , Alexa LF etc ). Would add to your already fantastic rigurous testing database of knowledge - while giving a really nice tangible results of real world practical results - even though understandably there will be more variables. - Thank your model / talent + hope to see more of these DR practical shots in the future !! Keep up the awesome work
Love your indepth reviews as always. Just a note on the stabilization though - it’s possible the difference in overall stabilization between the two is the size and weight difference between the two cameras right? The A7iii is bigger and heavier and is therefore easier to hold steady. Especially with the reduction in size on the A7c’s hand grip. I’m very interested in this camera. Seems like an ideal b-cam to my a7iii.
This is a concept camera . As gerald mentioned it doesn't hold much value today but lays a new path for what is coming in future . If people like this camera they can implement it in future new cameras otherwise they wont
How did they cripple it? Its basically a a73 but cheaper and smaller. Its exactly what the market it's aiming for wants, and far exceeds anything that would compete against it.
Oh come on. It’s a crippled 2 year old camera, nothing exciting about it. And it’s not that tiny. The difference is not that significant. No buttons, no joystick, 4000 shutter, flash sync 160, etc. unless you need a flip screen just buy the III.
I am a begginer videographer. After watching hours of comparisons on youtube I finaly made my mind and I just got the A7C. It is my first ever proper camera and I am very excited to start using it. However, at this moment, I know very little about colour grading. It would be nice if you could make a tutorial video on how to set it up to get the best colours and video quality straight from the camera (I believe that this camera will mostly be used by youtubers and begginers, who like me, might not be experts on colour grading) PS. I will pair my camera with either Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f4 or Sigma Art 50mm f1.4 and put it on a DJI RSC2 gimbal. So exciting!!!!

Gerald foreseeing Sony’s compact route is a testament to his knowledge and ability.
Who else sings along with the intro every time haha
Out of so many reviews I went through, this was so crisp and clear and on point. SUBSCRIBED the moment I ended with your video
Damn I thought I was fast.....but I cant even compete to get "FIRST"....
7:17 re eFCS off is important to me. Gerald is right! when eFCS is on, the godox flashes/strobe isn't reliable. for that, i'll skip.
The Canon eos R6 is pretty awesome.
Okay doing your audio test during the ad was... genius.
Intro: they put in all the tech from the older cameras!
Rest of review: actually they didn’t.
Gerald your reviews are hypnotic. I don't care about this camera but you make it sound compelling
Huge disappointment. No 10 bit, no 4k60, no new menu, bad rolling shutter, worse viewfinder positioning... After the a7siii I wasn't expecting this bad of a camera.
Very disappointed
not worth the money. The A7iii is cheaper than this A7c and the flip screen doesn't justify the price
Instead of releasing a7iv, they had to come out with a rebadged a7iii for video... I dont understand, it wouldve been a better move to release something that matches the canon r6 at lower price
seriously
One of the big problems is that everyone is using a variation of the same sensor, the IMX410.
It is a decent sensor, but it has the problem that it can only read out the sensor at 40 fps(open gate) and 48 fps(16:9). You need to crop to get 60 fps. To about 2.3:1 aspect ratio(zcam f6 has like an 2.37:1 I think) . Or an aps-c crop(pannasonic s1 and s1h.)
The 8 bit isn't the sensor of course, sigma pulls 12 bit raw out of it.
You are such a nerd, I love it! Best review on UA-cam! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You’re like Chris Stuckmann of cameras man.
As a production sound mixer I appreciated your audio test of the two cameras.
Why the hell does it have the old menu!??
Keep up the awesome work
7:17 why is no one talking about this! this is why i always watch your review first. smh
As always I look forward to your videos about new camera gear as you always gives us your honest and thorough opinion.
Thanks for this, I can skip the Sony presentation
Love your indepth reviews as always.
Just a note on the stabilization though - it’s possible the difference in overall stabilization between the two is the size and weight difference between the two cameras right? The A7iii is bigger and heavier and is therefore easier to hold steady. Especially with the reduction in size on the A7c’s hand grip.
I’m very interested in this camera. Seems like an ideal b-cam to my a7iii.
Who else ran to see if Gerald posted a video?
i feel smarter after watching your reviews more than any YTBer talking about cameras. you from Toronto, I am..
What a joke of a camera, Sony crippled it too much, it was a canon like move, just totally wrong approach
They had to put their leftover sensors somewhere but cut too many corners in the process. At least it'll move some A7iii inventory for them.
A full-frame mirrorless camera released in 2020 without any support for 10-bit video is just that (a bad joke)
It's not a bad camera, it's just a bad price. 1800 dollars for an a6600 with a larger sensor? Probably should have been 1400 to 1600 imo.
The way you make me listen to your sponsor segments is admirably despicable 👌🏻😌
It would be nice if you could make a tutorial video on how to set it up to get the best colours and video quality straight from the camera (I believe that this camera will mostly be used by youtubers and begginers, who like me, might not be experts on colour grading)
PS. I will pair my camera with either Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f4 or Sigma Art 50mm f1.4 and put it on a DJI RSC2 gimbal. So exciting!!!!
So it's a more expensive 2 year old camera more or less
Good news is the A7iii might drop in price again
Have been watching your vid for a while nowq and I realized I haven't subscribed ... I have missed alot of content . Time to binge watch even though am not getting any of the cameras . This channel is like Netflix documentary .
