Who is the overbearing arrogant guy in the checkered shirt that likes to hear himself talk and comes across as a know it all and technical expert on all topics...This character tends to want to dominate the conversation and be the center of attention. What's his claim to his self proclaimed fame? I thought he was Gruhn's repair shop guy. This guy talks like he knows more about everything music/guitars than George, Vince and Tom and is totally impressed with himself. Very annoying personality and totally opposite of the humble, sincere likeable Vince Gill. If I were George Gruhn, I would reel him in and have a man to man talk with him. With the knowledge, experience, success of Vince Gill, George Gruhn and Tom Bukovac, this arrogant checkered shirt guy totally dominated this conversation and on air time, undermining Vince, George and Tom as the focal point know it all character.

I played guitars in Gruhn’s twice. On acoustic guitars that are beyond description. The second you pick it up you sense that it’s shockingly lighter than you expected. The next is that the neck welcomes the crook of your hand. Then the fingerboard feel. It’s perfect and you realize you never knew before what perfect even was. It does not have a metal rod through the neck. You play it and you can feel the music vibrations through every part of the guitar that touches your body. It is a Zen experience. And you get to listen to other players, noodling. And they are all incredible. I’ve always wished that in another life will wind up in Nashville in the 1960s 1970s.

The part about George being so gracious and inviting is so true. My wife and I visited Nashville last year. We went to Gruhn's . George was at lunch. As we were leaving George pulled up. We asked for a picture with him in front of the building, which he obliged. After the photo I mentioned a 1933 Martin he had advertise on his website. He said you want to see it? Of course I said yes knowing I could never afford such an instrument. He carried us upstairs to his floor of the building. He showed us his snakes. My wife even held and petted his white python. He showed us all the instruments he had in his private area. He played some Bluegrass for us. We spent over an hour with George and his knowledge of things other than guitars was so enjoyable. The highlight of our trip for sure.

Funny thing regarding that Firebird X…. The then-gibson-CEO wanted to make that guitar wireless using Bluetooth technology and hired me to do it. I told him from the start I thought it was a terrible idea because of the latency, but he wanted to give it a go anyway…. Of course, it failed. I think I got the latency down to about 15 ms and you could feel it. Loved and hated that project… loved it because I got to work on a guitar, hated it because I knew it was a bad idea!

I first visited the Broadway store in the early '80s , I was looking for a National resophonic . This is before they became a symbol of your popularity. George was the kindest " dealer " I've ever known ! He had an early '30s Duolian but the previous owner had converted it to a " Dobro" type of setup. It also had some "decorative" gold paint on the resonator cover. The price was $ 250.00 . He talked me out of it saying that I could find one in better condition for the same price . About 6 months later I found a style 0 from ' 34 and a Triolian from ' 30 . Later I bought a mid '30s Trojan .
To this day I regret not buying that one , not because of the prices , but with all the changes it still had the sound .

It reminded me of an interview I watched with EVH and DLR back when they were getting ready for the final tour. DLR completely took over the conversation, interrupting Ed when he was trying to talk, and I was thinking, "Dude, wake up to some self-awareness. We tuned in to listen to what Ed has to say, not you!" 😅 But it's all good.

Loved the conversation on Martin X bracing. I have a D18E Retro, which has the forward shifted x bracing. Yes it’s not “vintage”, but I can afford it, at $2500. Sounds / plays awesome, too.
    Great episode Tom, thanks!
PS. I would love to hear George’s opinion on that HPL (Formica) crap Martin now uses on all sub $700 guitars. I don’t get it and as much as I love Martins, I freaking hate the stuff. For an “affordable” guitar, I’d rather own/play a nice $300 Epiphone, made with real WOOD, all be in plywood, and stick the $400 I have left back in my pocket.

I acquired my first vintage instrument (i only have two, not a collector, player stuff) only a gentlemens deal- like what they were talking about towards the beginning. Meaning i bought this old SG from my buddy for what he paid and agreed that if I were to ever sell itd be offered first to him and at the price he sold it to me. It is the right thing to do and honestly keeps a lot of these instruments playing and in the hands of players imo

Fender Solid State Amps story. HUNDREDS of warranty debacle amps were "repaired" and sold for LITERALLY pennies on the dollar - mainly to three or four Southern California Music Stores. I know because my store bought over 100 of them. Twin Reverbs, Scorpios. Deluxes, etc...etc... the amps really sucked but all the cabinets were typical Fender glued tongue and groove, etc...We paid pennies PER POUND for the things. There was also talk about some corruption in that the Fender employees in charge were rumored to have dropped the price even lower in the toilet in exchange for a few hunsky's on the side in their pockets. The UN REPAIRED ones were even cheaper. I asked my Boss why he bought so many and he said "Kid I'm getting cabinets with multiple Eminence 10's or 12's and I'm paying less for the entire amp that the cost of one or two raw speakers".

I made a guitar in high school but I did not quite finish it before I graduated so Randi let me use his shop to complete it. He still works on all of my guitars, he’s a great guy. Hey Tom, new subscriber here (Ken).
My main guitar player is Gary Moore. The things he did with a guitar was next level. You are the only player on this planet that reminds me of Gary’s free style of play.
I’d love to know your take on Gary Moore as a guitar player. Is there anything that you may have picked up from Gary and made it fit what you do?
Not sure how I’ll see your answer. Maybe on an Uncle Larry Homescoolin video?
BTW…. After watching you for 2 weeks… I’ve dropped 90% of the tension in both hands. My playing is fluid now, and getting creative. I’m 66 years old and am basically self taught. My style is in the form of David Gilmore, and Gary Moore’s slow blues stuff. My ring finger on my left fretting hand doesn’t work (stuck in a 90 degree angle). So all my chord workings are power chords. I love playing melody and leads as you do on your channel.
    Thank you, Tom

If Churchill and his cabinet were in Nashville and they were talented guitarists, luthiers and wise asses it might look like this.

A while back you mention that the guitar shop you owned sold good guitars that weren’t vintage but were in a price range that broke musician could afford. Could you see your way to doing an episode like that? I am not doubting the special sound and feel of a $200,000 guitar but at the end of the day all guitars are two pieces of wood and six pieces of wire. There must be some good sounding ones that don’t require a second mortgage to buy.

Fer sure. I have sold most of my old Martins PRS's, Gibsons and Fenders. Today's imported axes like Yamahas and Epiphones and SE's are wonderful instruments at great prices. You do have to be strong enough in your own opinions to ignore the missing snob value of the headstock. I'm not saying these are better, they re just affordable and terrific.
