What a tremendous interview. That's a lot of info to get out of Redd in one setting. He is a legend and a kind gentleman. Thanks for making this available.
All these guys seem like that, i wasnt as familiar with redd but i watched plenty of interviews with johnny hiland and he seems the same way, humble down to earth, funny and has their shit together when it matters on the bandstand. I am a strat playing rock & prog guy from the UK but i love anything guitar and these tele guys are like another world to me... i feel a tele purchase coming on

@@TruetoneFX Hi Zac, I'm a little late to the party but I have to say this was one of the best interviews I have watched (not just yours but all time). a late thanks bud.
I wish redd would give himself more credit for his talent and what he has accomplished in his career. Redd can make you a better player just by listening to him talk. One of the best musicians and person in the history of the industry.
I've been a fan for years but live in Australia so he doesn't tour here often . However I've seen him twice this year '23 ! I can only concur. Brilliant guitarist but always plays the song . He's become my favourite guitarist of all time . Stunning musicianship , humble and a guitarist's guitarist.
I saw Redd perform along with Bill Kirchen a month ago on Saint Patrick’s day and it was one of the most fantastic shows I’ve ever seen! Got to chat with both of them for a second and they couldn’t of been kinder and more sincere. Their playing is very inspiring, and the comical banter between the two was hilarious.
Redd was yet another guy who absorbed everything like a sponge and eventually developed his own signature sound and style. He was also a guy that was in the right place at the right time. Again, lots of good tone tips and stories. I'll bet life on the road with the one and only Merle Haggard was a real trip. Redd has been a part of some very timeless music. Thank you again Zac for a gem of an interview.
I was walking down Broadway in Nashville and heard somebody burning on a Tele! I went in and saw Redd leaned back in a chair tearing it up! I sat right in front of him and watched the remainder of the set with his trio. When he took a break he sat with us and talked through the break... good times!
Just the absolute sweetest human on this Earth! They say don’t meet your heroes, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to Redd Volkaert. I can’t even put into WORDS how much we miss him here in Austin. Just the best!
I was lucky to catch him in Austin summer of 2019. I saw Garrett Lebeau, and Red Young at the elephant room. I hear things have changed with the music scene there since covid.. Would you say it's so? I always wanted to come back but would be curious to hear what it's like from a local's perspective...
Great interview Redd is such a humble guy ( for being a brilliant guitarist ) i'll drop what i'm doing anytime to hear Redd play a Tele the way their were intended . He hammers it into submission and it sounds so sweet ! Damn !
I love the rule of “you make him laugh, you got the gig.” That’s a great rule to have. I always know that I’m playing some good stuff when I can make the artist I’m playing for laugh, and I’ve always used it as an indicator for quality.
What a great interview. And every time he answers a question, is a lesson to us all. We are all a PART of a band, not the main attraction. Ww should ALL raje that in.
Lucky enough to have Red do a couple of shows with my back in Nashville before he left with Merle. I kept messing up the words and missing cues because I couldn’t stop watching him pick. I must have spent a 1000 hours watching Red pick in Austin of the years. Such a class act and absolute savage.
Great interview! I'm a huge Redd fan. The Don Kelley story is wonderful; Don just announced he's retiring and moving to Florida. But I can guarantee the retirement community he moves into will have the rockinest honkytonk band in the state!
Was just going to watch a few minutes before bed…now it’s 1am. That was such a treat! Saw Redd at Vancouver Island Musicfest in 2018. He and Bill were playing on a tiny stage in the woods. Had never heard of them before, but decided to check out their set. Man! Just the most amazing playing and Redd had us all in stitches. So self-effacing and just full o’ beans. The highlight of the weekend! Great interview Zac! Thanks
“Here’s your money, go buy you some tone.” That was hilarious! Great interview with a great player. Thanks for this. Love me some Redd. One of the best pickers out there period.
I had the great opportunity to play bass with Redd at a benefit for a dear friend in Caldwell, Texas. Right before he moved to Virginia. By the way you can catch him on you tube, Floyd's Country Store. He's a pretty good singer too. Redd on guitar and vocals with a bass and drums. Excellent show.. well was wondering who this old lead guitar player was and then I looked at a guy walking through the parking lot and gasped, it was Redd Volkeart. My heart almost beat out of my chest. I've been a big fan of his for quite some time. I walked right up to him and introduced myself babbling like a kindergarten kid. He was married to a classmate of mine so I sat with them outside at a picnic table and had a great conversation. It was like sitting with an old friend. I was up playing with some guys just jamming away and I saw him heading too the stage. I wasn't about to handover that bass. You could tell the ones who thought they could take it from me. They had a big ole footprint on there chest. Not to many musicians can say they played with a Grammy winner at my level of skills. I rode that cloud for quite awhile. Wonderful man and Tele picker. And the sweetest wife.
Great interview with Redd! One of my favorite players. Been fortunate enough to see him many times here in Austin over the past 20 years and always leave with a smile on my face! Not only a great player but so much humor comes out in his playing which you don't see much these days. Recently read he might be leaving Texas soon and I can't blame him as Austin is more about tech than music these days with a higher cost of living. He'll be missed if he goes! If you haven't seen Redd live yet stop reading this and go already!
WHAT a great quote at 1:00:02 - "When real Country music finally takes its dying breath, it'll probably be in Texas". Kudos Mr Childs-amazing interview with a national treasure-such great work you are doing
One of the great guitar interviews of all time. Seriously. Redd is a virtuosso and a gentleman. Zac is a great listener and interviewer. Thank you to both.
My Dad, Buzz Evans, played some gigs with Redd in Austin about 12 years ago. I didn't know anything about Redd so this was a good introduction. Now it's time to listen to some of his music!
This was great. Redd is an old friend and I watched this while noodling on the tele he made for our shared (before he left Canada) mentor, Big George Moody. George gave me the tele before he passed, great memories of both of them. Redd hasn't changed in 35 years, still funny as ever and a great player. Thanks.
Our local band opened a show with Merle and Redd on guitar. Redds rig was my proof that you just need something to reach the mic, to please the audience. He had the two amps in a roll around, a mic and small pedal board.
Hey Zak..great interview. I was fortunate enough to discover Red in a honky tonk on lower Broadway, Nashville after a radio remote I was working with Tracy Lawrence as his publicist. I was blown away by this nobody who was killing it with this telecaster. Nashville honky tonks in those days were full of hidden gems. I sat with him for the rest of the night and offered to pitch a Guitar Player magazine interview. I took a few lessons from him..he taught me cascading runs. At that time he said he dreamed of playing with Merle. He is definitely on my list of Tele-slingers along with Danny, Roy, and Brent. Fyi, Doug Livingston is mentioned..Doug played with my brother-in-law in Dan Fogelberg's band and his group Foolsgold...he is a true steel guitar genius. The only person I know who plays jazz on steel guitar. Truly amazing.
Great interview! Love his attitude and work ethic. Play as much as you can guys. You never know when you may not be able to. Arthritis destroyed my hands after 30 years of playing so be grateful for what you have. Good Luck ya'all.👍😎🎸
If I could ever get to meet any of my guitar heroes of all time, it would be Red Volkaert. He is the most interesting and best guitar player of all time. Thanks for this interview.
A true musician and gentleman. Thanks for letting us hang out with you. Great stories and insights into guitar playing. Caught Redd a couple times at the Continental Club in Austin. A good time was had by all.
A guitar god that is just a good ole fella. Spent 3 days watching him in the studio in San Antonio and learned more than I have in the last 50 years. What a talent.
Interesting to hear Redd speaking so enthusiastically about the impressive guitar work of AL BRUNO with Merle Haggard (just after 35:33).....Lots of great energy / enthusiasm / info / humour throughout: 94 minutes very well spent!
One of the things I’m learning from these recordings is to listen more intently to the guitar licks, rhythm playing, fills, etc. Thanks for making these great videos.
Wonderful interview, Zac!!! Redd is a person that I, as a forever-struggling musician who's disabled, would LOVE to meet just to "pick his brain" about the Merle gig. I remember watching the television special on what what then TNN called "Workin' Man - A Tribute To Merle Haggard" and I loved it!
What a great guy. Have had his TeleTwang DVD for years, it's awesome concert with lessons and interview. Great player and seems like good guy to hang with. Great interview.
I guess this is the 5th or 6th time watching this interview. Each time I hear something that I didn't pick up on before. Like the fact Redd left Canada with a Tele and a Super. That's what I used when I first started playin' clubs in the 1980's. I had me a '78 Black Fender Telecaster, White coily cord and a '68 Super Reverb with JBLs.
I had the good fortune of meeting Redd in 1996. I was in a road band from Texas and Redd was playing @ Robert's western world with Don Kelley's Band. Every night off,I was there to see my new favorite guitar player. He was so gracious to chat guitars with you. He is still one of my favorites! Great guy and Texas misses you already!
Red is so giving with his tone and styles and humble for a phenomenal guitarist. He is not only a Telemaster but a great guy as well. Thank you Red and TrueTone for a fine interview.
I realize this interview is a few years old, but I just got to see Redd this past weekend in Floyd, VA (he hosts a Thursday night "honky tonk" show) and it was just incredible. I've been a fan of Redd for years, but this was the first time I saw him live - and what a treat it was from only about 20 feet away! He plays so effortlessly and has such awareness of what the other musicians are doing, I was just a joy to watch a virtuoso like this. I chatted with him briefly after the show and he could not have been nicer (or more humble!). Great job on this video Zac, you captured some wonderful stories from a true master who has led an amazing life - thank you for documenting this for all of us.
Probably my favorite of the Trutone Lounge interviews. I love all of them; but this one is special. Redd is such a down home-down to earth gentleman and a pleasure to listen to; whether he talking or playing.
Thanks a ton for this, very inspiring and entertaining,i wonder how you could keep a straight face through this, fantastic humour and a legendary player, love it🤘🙏✌️👍
totally , totally enjoyed this interview!! one of the best ive watched on UA-cam from one of my favorite musicians! Ive seen Redd with Merle about 4, 5 times. Bought his cd's , going back to almost 20 years ago. He should write a book of all his cool stories. A class act, down to earth guy for sure, that loves to play. THANKS for posting this
I've lived and played in and around Austin since '87 and I can tell you that Redd very quickly became an institution upon arrival. Back in 2010 I was fortunate enough to have Redd sit in all night with my band at The 290 West Club for the annual Christmas Party of The Austin Steel Guitar Cooperative. Envision this: 2 dozen Pedal Steels around the dance floor, and on stage an Archtop Player, a Drummer and myself on Bass with Redd who traded solos 'round robin with the steel guitars all evening long. I was there and it seems surreal. Incidentally, he's genuinely a really nice guy. I said it that night and I'll say it again; he's like Danny Gatton with his foot deep in Bob Wills ass.
I think this is the best interview with Redd I have heard! The stories Redd told were priceless. The video was also like a private lesson with a guitar pro. I had the pleasure of meeting Redd at "Robert's" many years ago. He was working with Bob Kelly that night. I was in awe seeing him play for my first time. A gentleman and a true 'Tele Master'. Thanks Truetone!
That's how you do an interview. Knowing your material but letting your subject speak. It helps that Redd is such a good story teller!! Fantastic interview!!! I saw Redd Ginny's little Longhorn on Chicken Shit bingo Sunday a decade ago. I was surprised by how good of a singer he is!!! To anyone from the lower mainland I think Redd said he was from Cloverdale. And yes Redd is correct us Canadians are cheap, we're working on it though!
The best musician I know plays/learns songs exactly the same way - he just does it, no reading. He plays a mean banjo, guitar, mando, fiddle all by feel. That just amazes me since I absolutely must be able to see it in written form to know what recognize what I am working on.
What an interesting, likable artist with a ton of stories !! He has quite the memory of his journey. Great interview, as always, of one of the greats in the industry. I really enjoyed your video and appreciate the time and effort put into it !!!
Captivating story telling ~ a super fun trip down memory lane. A real memorable, Truetone vintage interview. Redd, what a guitar journey!!! I love Willie's Road House, cool stuff...
I sure hope to meet Redd one day.... We are the same age, and I’d like to plan a small vacation and spend about a week hanging out and going to a handful of his shows.. What a super guy...!!!
Great interview! Last year I was fortunate to have Redd lay down the tracks on my CD Sacred Ground, that Walt Wilkins produced at Jumping Dog with Ron Flynt. Wonderful, fun, and funny to work with. A master. Thank you Redd. All the best with your move.
I like Redd! From the very first time I watched a UA-cam video with Redd playing his Tele I have been a fan of this friendly guy. Redd Volkaert an American/Canadian representing both countries very well. -Peter I watched the entire video, and very much appreciated that you guy's made this video.
I will never get back this hour and thirty four and twenty six seconds of my life...and I don’t care! Loved this interview and wow, what an awesome dude is Red!
It took 3 separate days to watch the whole video, but as usual it was well worth it! I can't wait to see what 2020 has in store for us re interviews. Thank you Zac & Truetone for this channel!
@@TruetoneFX Maybe sometime in the future you could interview Buddy Miller? Thanks again for this wonderful avenue to absorb and hopefully learn! I would hope that younger players will discover this channel and have it help them appreciate what goes into making music.
Wow, my music IQ has been kicked up a notch. This is a truly fantastic interview of an amazing artist. Thanks for putting such high quality content out there.
Redd, Tiny Moore worked for my Dad, Ray Harris, at KRAK/KXOA in Sacramento with Billy Jack Wills and Okey Paul Westmoreland. Tiny Moore gave me my only guitar lesson….. I was playing the Rawhide during the same years you were. (The Susanville Stage Band) Loved listening to your stories. All the best to you Redd. Rick Harris
Thanks so much for this! You know, I just don't understand UA-cam many times. Your channel is the very definition of the content, combined with your talent and personality, that should have put your channel at the top of suggested videos for me. Not just my love for Redd, but your other content too. You really do an excellent, excellent, job on every video I've watched. Redd! Absolutely amazing, stunning, flawless, oh hell, I could keep going, player. Effortless. And then we had your incredible wit. Had the room laughing between EVERY single break, and equally love your perfect blend straight into the next tune, and the next, etc. A pro's pro. I've learned a lot about comping during someone else's solo. Having watched more, I absolutely now see how/why Redd's early training to, using my own dumb words, 'keep the audience engaged' in the amazing skill of weaving one song into the next, and when there are breaks, we're STILL completely entertained and looking forward to your stories and comedy in-between sets of songs. THAT became part of show! I can immediately see the influence of the 'audience chat' on many other local acts. Sure, everyone knows to avoid the dreaded 'radio silence' when they're tuning, etc., but you set the bar so high, and others learned to adapt - and get better! I have a pic with you that I treasure and am giving it a special place on the wall of my home studio, right beneath your Continental Club - HEYBALE! SMOKIN' *every Sunday" framed poster. 🎸😁 Man, oh man, a huge mass of us in and around Austin, heck people would come from all over Texas to see Redd. I loved taking folks who hadn't yet seen you, to see you and watch their jaws drop. Saturday afternoons were a favorite of my wife and me. We miss Redd dearly, but he's in a better place in his small town in the mountains. How lucky that town is to have you. Austin has become a mess in so many ways. It's sad. We ALL (old Austinites) miss old Austin. Redd - We love you! Glad you and your wife made such a smart move (though we still can't wait for you to come for a visit and some gigs!). Hoping y'all are happy and healthy.
Really cool video, thanks. I have an 81 years old friend that played with Al Bruno back in the day. I can't seem to find much on Al. Maybe in light of Redd's comments here around min. 35-36, you could do a video on him some day. I would like to know more about and honor those who went ahead of us and inspired others.
In the 90s I spent a lot of time at Robert's on Broadway in Nashville watching BR549 and Don Kelly band and others, remember seeing Redd play and being very impressed. Sometime in the next year I was watching Merle on TV and there was Redd! I was very surprised, thought he was a perfect match for Merle.
One of my earliest experiences in my earliest days of living in Nashville was being taken to a dirty funky dive bar, maybe 10 people inside, and Redd was playing. I of course had no idea who he was etc. etc. needless to say I was blown away by the whole experience. Still it always struck me strange to see such a huge talent was playing in such a terrible place! Didn’t matter at all to him as he demonstrated some guitar playing extraordinary that evening. Thanks Redd.

Great DVD. Zac
I met him once with my Friend Will Ray. He is a genuinely nice man. If you ever get the chance to see him live, do it. He's a master.
Red is so giving with his tone and styles and humble for a phenomenal guitarist. He is not only a Telemaster but a great guy as well. Thank you Red and TrueTone for a fine interview.
So welcome. Zac
another great interview! We're going to be missing Redd here in Austin!
Redd is a charming and fascinating guest. Sounds like he had a life others may want to live. What a positive and self-actualized man!
Look at what kinda/sorta turned into! You give us all hope Mr. Volkaert. Great interview. Thank you for this.
Probably my favorite of the Trutone Lounge interviews. I love all of them; but this one is special. Redd is such a down home-down to earth gentleman and a pleasure to listen to; whether he talking or playing.
Thanks a ton for this, very inspiring and entertaining,i wonder how you could keep a straight face through this, fantastic humour and a legendary player, love it🤘🙏✌️👍
He is so much fun to hang with. Zac
Never heard of Redd until I seen him play
today at a car show in Denton, TX
This guy is amazing!
Your life is better for having recognized this man.
Some of the most fun I ever had was hanging out with Redd and Big Jim Murphy in Nashville.
I can listen to Red jaw all night and never lose my smile !
Redd is the greatest!! I was lucky enough to work with him when he was in LA. Thank you!!!
Redd is a walking encyclopedia. Great interview.thanks.
Much appreciated
As a new “older” guitar beginner, this has been an eye opening video for me. Very informative.
Thank you Redd and thank you Truetone.
You are so welcome!
totally , totally enjoyed this interview!! one of the best ive watched on UA-cam from one of my favorite musicians! Ive seen Redd with Merle about 4, 5 times. Bought his cd's , going back to almost 20 years ago. He should write a book of all his cool stories. A class act, down to earth guy for sure, that loves to play. THANKS for posting this
Incredible interview with a great guy! Thanks Truetone and Redd Volkaert.
This is the best episode in a good while. I appreciate y'all bringing this stuff to me. Happy new year.
Thank you Zac and Redd! This was another wonderful interview of a spectacular player! Keep them coming!
Will do! Zac
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was an easy one, and so much fun. Zac
What a great interview. This is what makes UA-cam worthwhile.
Wow Zac the Truetone Lounge keeps amazing me. Redd is a true Tele legend and great storyteller. Thank You
You are so welcome! Zac
Quite possibly the best interview with Redd I have seen....thank you
Just found the channel. Love it so far. Have a lot to watch to catch up.
Thanks for finding us!!! Zac
-Peter
I watched the entire video, and very much appreciated that you guy's made this video.
I will never get back this hour and thirty four and twenty six seconds of my life...and I don’t care! Loved this interview and wow, what an awesome dude is Red!
Thanks for watching. Zac
It took 3 separate days to watch the whole video, but as usual it was well worth it! I can't wait to see what 2020 has in store for us re interviews. Thank you Zac & Truetone for this channel!
More good stuff to come. Thanks! Zac
@@TruetoneFX Maybe sometime in the future you could interview Buddy Miller? Thanks again for this wonderful avenue to absorb and hopefully learn! I would hope that younger players will discover this channel and have it help them appreciate what goes into making music.
Amazing episode. Thanks, Zac.

What a great interview. Thanks so much!
Our pleasure!
Wow, my music IQ has been kicked up a notch. This is a truly fantastic interview of an amazing artist. Thanks for putting such high quality content out there.
Thank you!!!
Redd,
Tiny Moore worked for my Dad, Ray Harris, at KRAK/KXOA in Sacramento with Billy Jack Wills and Okey Paul Westmoreland. Tiny Moore gave me my only guitar lesson…..
I was playing the Rawhide during the same years you were. (The Susanville Stage Band)
Loved listening to your stories.
All the best to you Redd.
Rick Harris
I love listening to this guy! So much knowledge!
thanks Zac for this upload ad interview.
Man, oh man, a huge mass of us in and around Austin, heck people would come from all over Texas to see Redd.
All of these interviews are great, but this one was exceptional. Thanks Zach!
You are so welcome. Zac
Redd is a treasure....great interview!
Love this interview! Happy to hear such great Honkytonk history is being archived for future fans & generations to enjoy! Great job!
