[Corey made me feel comfortable. I had a tele picked out; he guided me to a room with amps, plugged it in, and he played a few things. Then he handed it to me and I played a few things, we had some conversation, and I told him I was going to another store but would call him and let him know if I was coming back. He said he'd hold the guitar for me. "Jason from Michigan" was the way I identified myself. An hour or 2 later, I called and asked for Corey. He was busy but called me back shortly thereafter. "Jason from Michigan?" he said. I went back and he hooked me up. Awesome service and an awesome salesman. Corey is the Man.]
I love that Corey has the goal of making people feel comfortable. Even going into a run of the mill guitar store can be intimidating, let alone an institution like Gruhn's. God bless these boys and all they do!
Dear Tom you never cease to amazed me the way you instantly find the right piece of music and the playing approach which instantly reveals the intrinsic quality of the instrument It's simply mind blowing how much fabulous music is runnin throgh your veins. Seing you play lefty was a special bonus what an amazing trick
These long type videos with the boys are the best. Enjoyable conversations only enthusiastic guitarists can appreciate. But most of all I sit and watch with my guitar in hand and get endless inspiration playing around with the ideas you come up with while you're jamming on each guitar. Thanks heaps!
Every time Tom plays any guitar its instant musical MAGICK! The sound of that Martin brought a tear to my eye but it really doesn't matter with this guy, he could play the cheapest pos guitar and still sound amazing! EDIT: Apparently he can even make a left handed upside down guitar sound amazing!!!😂
I bought what was called a Martin Custom guitar at Gruhn's many years ago. They said they had a certain number of guitars made for them by Martin. We were visiting in Nashville, and I saw a music shop. I didn't know that it was kind of famous, so I went in and just started playing guitars. They invited me to go into what they called the picking room and in there I played the more expensive guitars. A fun memory! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on UA-cam.
Great show.I'm a big fan of vintage stuff, have owned a bunch of them over the years. The most wonderful, part of the video,is the overall Joy of sound, and friendship.Thanks.D
that's one thing I'll always appreciate Gruhn's for, I don't think I was even 16 and they let me play the burst they had. That will always be a special moment for me, They also didn't give me like a minute with it and take it away, it was like 30 or 40 minutes. Will stick with me forever!
Keep these coming! You asked for requests so here’s one: it would be great to hear y’all cover long term storage and display of high end guitars. Is a humidifier overkill? What meters and gear are effective? What needs the most careful handling? Etc. thanks!!!
Fellow Classmates, I stopped by Gruhn’s Guitars while I was in Nashville a few weeks ago. I was blown away by the guitars there that you can play off the racks. The majority of the acoustics there are nicer than the showrooms in my area which is always a mess trying to get access to play the higher end stuff at my local shops (I usually get the are you gonna buy it look/attitude before they unlock it). I experienced none of that at Gruhn’s and I highly recommend stopping by if you are near.
I'm an old guy (started playin in1961). I've heard stories of players that could play both righties and lefties, but never seen it. That was really pretty amazing. Uncle Larry must be one of the most talented and hardest working guitar players in the business. I look forward to watching these videos every day. Thanks for showing inside views of the life of Nashville session musician.
So glad y’all love the melody maker! I have a single pickup 66 and it has the original pickup with the incredible neck and the original single coil low output pickup and it reacts so well with higher gain Marshall style amps
Corey and Greg think they are in the business of selling/repairing guitars. They are actually in the trust business. You are going to pay for whichever type of guitar you think you can afford. But when you trust the dudes with whom you are dealing? Priceless. Thanks for doing this guys...
5 years ago I drove the Blues Trail from New Orleans to Chicago when on holiday from the UK. I couldn’t wait to visit Gruhn’s and felt like a little kid in wonderland. I was 65 years old at the time! I asked to meet George and not only did he agree but we spent and hour together. During this time I was admiring a Martin 00018 hanging from the wall. George let me play it. When I put it back I noticed that it was $100,000. This would not have happened in London. All the team I met were great. Can’t wait to go back to Aladdin’s Cave one day. This is a great segment of your show Tom. More please.

Man this was great!! There's that other store on the West Coast that sells vintage guitars and has a guitar of the day.. This just took That to a whole new level!! Excellent excellent excellent!!
I’m pretty sure if we put strings on a phone book, uncle Larry would make it sound great. Amazing and effortlessly bringing the best out of everything he touches … I love watching the facial reactions of the guys in the room as he dances on the fretboard… love it
Corey has helped me with a couple guitars whenever I've been in town. Gruhn is great about making people feel welcome. Rumble Seat on the other hand is a sweet store but the last time I was there we were told that anything we wanted to play had to be handed to us. Either way love both stores and Carter Vintage. Great video as always! 🎸
I really love this series of videos. I hope there are many more of them to enjoy in the future. Huge gratitude to you and the guys at Gruhn's for your time, knowledge, and love of all things guitar.
So cool seeing Tom play a lefty. As a southpaw, I'm used to picking up right-handed guitars and playing them upside down. He is doing exceptionally well! Also, damn, I would kill for either the SG or the Esquire...
You're fukn nuts Tom! Truly in tune with melody and tone. I've never seen someone with such a catalog in their brain. I could listen to you play all day! Masterful
I just love how Greg and Corey are superfocused on Tom's hands when he's playing...like two kids staring at the presents under the christmas tree...I'm doing it as well I might add, when Tom's playing I'm just amazed every time...he's the GOAT!!!
I don't play but noticed that Tom seems to have perfect hands to be a virtuoso guitarist. And look how strong they look! I suppose that comes from years of playing.
I couldn't help but notice you didn't play any prog licks while demoing those saxophones, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for that- Danka LarrY!!!
Tom I didn't think I could appreciate your playing more but then you played so well lefty it elevated your status to true savant level excellence and mastery. What the hell man!
Wow, what a fun 75 minutes!! Great information, great friendship and tons of cool tones. I would love to see a shootout of vintage versus new custom shop guitars with your thoughts on what's good and not so good on each. I'm really looking forward to more of these. Oh, and great left hand playing.
What can i say Uncle Larry, watched the video as i ended the day, and i went to sleep with a big smile on my face. I am sure everyone appreciates all your generosity.
How can you not pick the white-guard? That things was awesome! EDITED TO ADD: That Firebird is freaking awesome, too. That would be my second choice. Regarding the store…though I haven’t been to Gruhen’s in 30 years, back in the mid-90s, I used to travel from Dallas to Nashville, every couple months, for work. I was super impressed with how laid back they were and how I felt I could play anything I wanted there. It was refreshing compared to my experience with other smaller shops here in Dallas or other cities in the SW. Much appreciated.
This was top notch 👍🏼 the tones on that epiphone, it’s like there are songs in that guitar just waiting to be coaxed out. Some good banter in that room! Gregs laugh is infectious. I hope one day I play as well as you do upside down 🤯
Made it through the whole video. I was entertained the entire time. It’s great seeing the three of you enjoying each other’s company the way you do. I feel like I just had the best hang with old friends.
Now I know what my Dad meant when he said, “Boy, you wanna do anything with bla, blah, bla …… you better work at until you learn it backwards and forward “…. … that’s why you so great… you took it literal. Thanks Tom for the life lesson.
I predict, Uncle Larry goes home with that Epiphone. That was SO dialed in!! Wow. Thank you, Greg and Corey just the same!! As Tom was playing that Epi, Greg, Corey, and I, and probably 17,000 other guys had the same serene smile on our faces! I'm sure of it. Man was that awesome!!
@@hansvancamp6284 I think that's a 1965 or 66 Epiphone Al Caiola. Fairly rare. A few have been sold on Reverb in the last few years. That is one really interesting guitar. Would have loved to hear Tom run through all of the iterations of that switching system! 👍
Such a great episode. Bummed it took me awhile to get to this one, that Epiphone is really talking to me…and is gone. Please keep doing these. So much knowledge from all you guys that’s just impossible to find elsewhere.
Gruhn's .. One of my top Nashville bucket list stops .. someday soon. A while back George was very kind in answering a few questions I emailed him regarding a 1946 ES-300 I have. Plus, he likes Parrots, which is cool in itself.
Crazy good. Listened to this while on the treadmill with ear buds and it is a WHOLE different sound. The tone in the hands of the master becomes heavenly. Even when playing a lefty. What???
Nothing long winded about this Tom. It was a guitar enthusiast dream. As for ideas, it would be great fun to pick out one very rare and very expensive guitar a month with an eye popping price. I get that money doesn’t equal cool but it’s still fun to see those rare items. Also fun to compare them with their new original price. 20 seconds before pulling the trigger on a left handed guitar, realized this channel might influence my decision making process a little too much lmao😂
Just now got the chance to sit down and watch this one…very much enjoy y’all sharing those beauties!! All I can say is you need to borrow that Martin and just roll tape for a couple hours. That thing sounds AMAZING!! Gotta also say the stuff you had chiming out of that Epi was awesome too!! I hear what you’re saying about Dan probably liking that one but you should definitely add that one to your studio case. Bang for buck that thing could seriously be dangerous in your hands. 🤘Thanks for sharing!
What an amazing video Tom, killer guitars but your playing was captivating. The tones with that Epiphone were particularly special, as well as that ‘31 Martin
The switch to the pick just past 21:45. A quick interjection then tucked away again and then back out again. Tone, articulation, dynamics, and super slick technique.
Wish I could like this vid more than once. Loved the lefty sg special bit
We wanna hang out with Uncle Larry and the mighty Greg Voros!! Miss you fellas!

Tom. When you pick up a guitar you always play something musical and never the same thing twice. You’re really refreshing to listen to.
To keep with the Homeskoolin' vibe, I think these special Uncle Larry outings should be called "Field Trippin'"
I love watching Corey and Greg's faces while Tom plays. Wide eyed and all smiles! Nice front row seats! Thank you!
Just amazing how ol’ Larry knows immediately and EXACTLY what to play to make each guitar shine.
These visits to Gruhn's are so cool. Thanks for taking us with you Larry!
Hugging a 31 Martin shadetop, hanging out with Uncle Larry. Listening to him play. Livin’ the dream.
