UA-cam's algorithm comes up with some pretty unfortunate ad placement sometimes. Today I watched a video about a guy in England who made a cute little Hobbit-style village for mice in his garden. It was preceded by an ad for pest control! And back in December when that RV blew up in Nashville, every time I watched a video about it, I'd get ads for RVs.
That is not unfortunate at all, that is on purpose. UA-cam will match advertisers to videos containing the tags the advertiser wants to be associated with. That is for example why you will always get Monsanto ads on anything critical of Monsanto, cause they decided they want to create a counter narrative right where they are criticised and youtube provides them with the infrastructure to do that. By the same logic someone selling alcohol might anticipate to make the bigger profit, if they get 20 alcoholics to relapse as opposed to getting 20 random people interested in their product. Sometimes the ads don't land perfectly, like with that pest control ad, but often the choices are made very deliberately, like with that RV. Worried your RV will blow up? Better buy a new one.
@@Ellipsis115 I think what he's saying is that indulging in social media is like taking free samples of wasps. It's super unhealthy and "if you swat one it releases a pheromone that makes the others more violent". So you engage with a bad story, and it influences the algorithm to give you more bad stories. The moral of the story being: gorging yourself on negative stories on social media is like swatting at a wasp. Doing it only attracts even more.
@@davidanoble My way is not to be logged in unless I want to post, and then I log out, clear all cookies and delete all cached information. Almost all my browsing is done without being logged in. “Is it going to be difficult to get engagement through pissing people off?” “Actually its going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience” “Oh really!?”
Yeah, yeah, yeah! Turns out people now do something called hate watching, which is where they spend their time watching something they hate, increasing that video's ad revenue and driving engagement up by commenting how the video wasted their time. But didn't they just chose to waste their own time? It's not like someone forced them to click the video. Yes, of course, but admitting that you did anything wrong is sooo 20th century. They will get mad at the video and spend more time watching other videos like it. Don't they understand that the channel that uploaded the video profits of that? I mean it's very easy to look that fact up. Looking things up? Sir, it's 2021, no one even knows what that means anymore. Get with the time and get angry when you don't understand something!
@@creativedesignation7880 It's not always hate-watching though. Every negative story a news outlet shows is designed to attract you attention and often invoke an emotion of anger, fear, etc. that makes you more likely to make the viewer or reader continue being fed this stuff. Hate-watching is completely separate from this topic as hate-watching is not some news covering the thing you hate it's just the content. Hate-watching is if a Democrat was to watch a Trump rally which isn't a common thing for someone to do whats more likely is a Democrat will watch a CNN bit that invokes anger in them about said Trump rally.
"Is it going to be difficult to get engagement through pissing people off?" "Actually it's gonna be super easy, barely and inconvenience... you dingus" "OH that makes me real mad, I'm gonna put all my attention on you in case you do something I don't like again"

I think I'm most disturbed that there are a few exceptions. If it were all one way or another then fine, just another freaky dimensional quirk, but being 99% one way and yet breaking that law 1% of the time suggests wrongness. 1% of your population look like proper Ryans? And the rest of you don't, and you don't find that weird?
I love you delivery of social issues without directly talking down to complicated humans who may or may not be involved in your point. Between that and your very watchable adstronaut slots, you are *nailing* the ability to be monetized without selling out your base. I loved the Doorbell bit, physics jokes are tight.
Hi! Someone from the dimension known as Texas here. I was at the ADC (Alternate dimension convention) and got a lot of people asking about our trees that grow guns.
“People with different beliefs from me are the root of all evil” Lmao, this man is a genius! Edit: Thanks for 1k likes! This is the most i’ve ever gotten
For most of us this is at least somewhat true. Whether your belief originates in religion, philosophy, childhood trauma or just common sense, the majority of us believe killing innocent people is wrong and something we would never do, as is abusing the weak or stealing from the destitute. By definition therefore, those who do these things have a different belief regardless what group they claim to belong to.
@@adamrobinson6951 I think its ok to kill an innocent if it means saving more innocents, assuming you aren't killing children to do this. And even then, killing one 3 year old to save the lives of two 3 year olds, all of which are innocent, and happy, is a good idea aside from it being illegal.
I think I'd rather have the wasps, thanks. They eat garden pests and don't breed radicalized division and intolerance in huge swaths of the human population, y'know?
I was going to recommend Ryan George audition for SNL, but what he does on this channel is funnier and more clever than any of their sketches I’ve seen recently. Just great!
Elegant and clever maybe, but this sketch couldn't get any less subtle. I think the strength of the sketch is more from the fact that it is rather dry and unbiased explanation of social media radicalization. It strays away from examples that would alienate audiences that have unknowingly fallen into echo chambers, the exact people that really need a reminder of this sort of thing.
@@Banazama but the algorithm part wasn’t directly referencing radicalized groups it was referencing the concept of Facebook and Twitter social circles becoming echo chambers of agreeing or applauding the ego because you get into groups of similar thought. This happens to pretty much every group not just flat earthers. Left, Right, Authoritarian, or libertarian, the whole political compass is the precursor to tribe mentality around political ideology that the algorithm and social media has helped flat earthers and pig fuckers to find communities to help justify their actions or thoughts. That’s there are people still convinced Biden has been the best so far, why some believe trump never made a single mistake, why some still think the cake is real.
Ryan does the best job in making people watch his end ads because - they come last and don't force themselfes into the content - they are often pretty entertaining too - his content is so good, that it gives you a sense like owing it to him =)
I like how this doesn't even sway one way or another but attacks "My side is the Good Side" in general. That's something a lot of people forget, is that EVERY group has its monsters
Though those who have the least reality on their side have to push those emotional buttons. Every group of politicians and their voters are corrupt, but only one side tried to overthrow the government. Both sides is a fallacy, and false balance a thing.
Everyone else’s opinions are spoonfed to them in bad faith, mine are based on objective and systematic research. I don’t understand how they don’t see it and just take my word for how they should be conducting themselves. We should form some kind of club where we share our logical and rational thoughts with each other and bemoan the benighted state of society outside of our club.
People who aren't like us base their thoughts off their petty emotions, but people like us are high minded and honest, and one of you said something that im now convinced I always thought also
The whole line of thought reminds me of the song scapegoat by atmosphere or this quote by Terry pratchett "It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things"
It's silly to think other dimensions would be interested in wasps or think they are cool. I know this because I'm flooded with so much information in a day that I can formulate an opinion just by reading the title and watching 30 seconds of the video before commenting and moving on. They really should just make all video 30 seconds long to really nail that sweet spot of focus and interest.
What if the fake moustache is placed on a much more convincing fake moustache ? How can we be sure how Ryan (if that's his actual name) really looks like ?
This is probably my favorite video on UA-cam. Simultaneously hilarious and incredibly enlightening about social media and litterally society as a whole. Wow wow wow... wow.
Arguably the case could be made for both sides, but I do agree that a lot of the right-wing media at this point in time is just "Pretend the Neo-Nazis and white supremacists don't exist, focus on this so-called 'culture war' and conspiracies about ballot counting."
Said everyone on Fakebook, Twitter, and UA-cam. Except us, of course, we are not like them, we actually engage with like-minded individuals who were exposed to the exact same content that the algorithm recommended to us.
Illian Ciende and Cameron Sitton The two perfect exemple of the echo chamber, the very thing Ryan described, you really don't need to check that far to find those, they don't even notice it because the message goes above their heads so hard.... would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
"that was done by someone who doesnt share you beliefs, feels good doesnt it." god it really hard not to fall down that hole. I have to actively remind myself of that far too often.
Not gonna lie, it's insidious.... I have a mantra I like to say... "I'm not as smart as I think. I am too smart for my own good"..... For the most part, it works. And then, my humanity kicks in and I fall into that rap every now and then.
"Well first of all the algorithm would show you an ad..." "What was that?" He asked this because he doesn't know what ads are... imagine a dimension without wasps and ads...
@@pastasoo They did experience the internet though. Remember he said it just never caught on cause they didn't like the dial up modem noise and instead of making the internet better they just stopped using it.
This is such an amazing bait and switch. Goes from 'haha, wasps are crazy' to 'social media algorithms are literally breaking society' and does so with such verve and wit. Brilliant stuff. The best explanation for how insidiously that stuff works I've seen yet.
I actually love how the algorithm thing just points out how it’s an incredibly stupid and flawed system rather than this conspiracy that it’s trying to shove people into boxes they don’t wanna be in but are still being shoved it. Like the algorithm is just stupid, never attribute to malice what can be explained by apathy and/or stupidity
Hm, I wouldn't say _every_ algorithm has a bias, but it is obvious that at least _some_ people want to use them to spread their views on the world. Look at the censorship system on social apps. In theory, this is to avoid people from insulting each other and using bad language. But in practice, the guys writing those systems can add whatever they want. Ever heard of that pedophile's daughter working at Reddit? She had worked on the "blacklist" of Reddit to erase anything surrounding her father, to bury his dark secret. *That was no accident, she had purposefully used the censorship system of Reddit to hide something.* Now that's just a random person in the world trying to help her father's reputation. Do you really think politicians and activists don't want to use those systems to push their agendas?
It's mostly apathy. If you're interested in learning more about how exactly it all came about I highly recommend the documentary The Social Dilemma, I watched it on Netflix, idk what else it's available on
Yeah, that mindset is practically universal now. It's the one thing we all share. It's a large part of the reason that I can't even visualize how a Trump supporter thinks, and it's honestly hard for me to even think of them as people. Most of the time I just think of them as 'oh, they're those creatures who don't wear masks or get vaccines so they can deliberately spread diseases, because they feed on the drama. Like mosquitos with malaria, except worse because the mosquitos don't actually know they're spreading a disease when they feed.' This video made me pause and think 'oh, Trump supporters probably do have an actual point of view', but even knowing my views are largely due to being in an echo chamber, it's still impossible for me to even imagine what their perspective is. Probably because with the algorithm, I'm rarely even exposed to their point of view. Then, because all sides are in our own echochamber, our views end up driven so far apart that even when we do speak our sense of what reality is and where we're coming from is so far apart that we can't even begin to understand each other.
@@PixieoftheWood It's also hard for Trump supporters to think of brainwashed idiotic Leftists, who literally and unironically live in echo chambers, as anything more than scum to be filled with lead. Hard to see them as anything more than whining, festering, rot-filled maggots. It's hard to visualize how people can be so braindead and stupid that they listen to every lie the mainstream media put forth and drink the way a whore does with semen. Extremely difficult to view people who think murdering the unborn is somehow a woman's "right"-and people who burn down cities being racist while shouting about how anti-racist they are-as anything more than a cancer to society and a disease that needs to be removed with violence and extreme prejudice. Very hard to view "communists" as anything more than target practice.
Video: "Maybe it would help to engage with other like-minded individuals that have been exclusively exposed to the same content as you." Me: My, that sounds disturbingly like echo chambers. Video: "So why don't you head over and talk to my collegue, Echo Chamber." Me: Oh, there it is! xD

There was a band called Birth of Joy. After I checked some of their music I got loads of baby product ads😂 I just thought it was funny.
I sure would love to live in one right after seeing it blow the heck up
uBlock Origin keeps me safe and protected like a warm blanket!!!

Internet and politic debates in a nutshell
I love how when Ryan touches "politics" he always does it in an elegant, clever, subtle way..
If this passes as subtlety these days, then I guess a pack of elephants stampeding through a store selling antique fine china is the peak of subtlety.
Not my group. We're right.

People who aren't like us base their thoughts off their petty emotions, but people like us are high minded and honest, and one of you said something that im now convinced I always thought also
The whole line of thought reminds me of the song scapegoat by atmosphere or this quote by Terry pratchett
"It was so much easier to blame it on Them.

Like the algorithm is just stupid, never attribute to malice what can be explained by apathy and/or stupidity
Or the desire for profit.
*That was no accident, she had purposefully used the censorship system of Reddit to hide something.*
Now that's just a random person in the world trying to help her father's reputation. Do you really think politicians and activists don't want to use those systems to push their agendas?
Why not both at the same time? Never let a crisis go to waste, and if you can notice one brewing and make it worse, all the better.
It's mostly apathy. If you're interested in learning more about how exactly it all came about I highly recommend the documentary The Social Dilemma, I watched it on Netflix, idk what else it's available on

“My views are the only right ones.”
So relatable.
Like mosquitos with malaria, except worse because the mosquitos don't actually know they're spreading a disease when they feed.'
This video made me pause and think 'oh, Trump supporters probably do have an actual point of view', but even knowing my views are largely due to being in an echo chamber, it's still impossible for me to even imagine what their perspective is.
