I am a old PF fan and this was better than the original. Everybody in the Nightwish band did a superb job!
Pink Floyd was my introduction to rock growing up, my dad's favorite band I discovered his albums and fell in love, but I absolutely prefer the cover to the original, though many close minded people will scream blasphemy I'm certainly not one of them.
You can never be better than the original...that's crazy. This is the best cover of this song imo though.
@@snozbaries7652 yes.. you can, this is an example... and disturbed the sound of silence is another one.. few.. it is true.. but they are possible. In no way that mean the originals are not good, you can`t make a good cover out of a trash you know.
IMHO Emppu shines here as much as Marko. Let's just say that Nightwish is a band made up of musicians at the top of their game especially since they added Floor & Troy. Just a exceptional group of over-achievers.
When Emppu covers one of the greatest guitarists of all time... Not a word about him... got a bit sad to be fair... If there was no David Gilmour there would be no PF... Just my opinion...
Totally agree. Epic performances from all of them. Jukka, particularly, really gets into his performance. But then, he always did. Empuu, immaculate in his solos, and a gorgeous tone from his guitar. Marko has such a powerful voice, with a lovely vibrato and timbre, yet to look at him perform, it's effortless, just like Floor. And we can't forget Tuomas. In producing his tribute to Pink Floyd, I feel he has improved on the original, and I love Pink Floyd. If you didn't know of the original, this song could have been written specifically for Marko's vocals, so easy is his 'fit' into the song.
Every musician who has ever been a part of Nightwish is a master of their respective instruments and voice.
Poor Emmpu. Never gets any love for his guitar playing.

Could not said it better myself, I really believe Nightwish did this song better. I saw Pink Floyd live three times they will always be one of my favorite bands, but like you I have to admit this version is better, which I thought I’d never say when it comes to other bands/artists covering Pink Floyd! Every guitar player I know (I am one too) raves about Emppu's playing. We all love the way he always serves the song, and never his ego.

from the beginning with the single bell notes to the impressive single note ending, Nightwish has created the ultimate tribute to Pink Floyd. Not enough words to express my complete admiration of Nightwish.

This is a great cover. Marko is at his best here. He has the right a little sinister tone on his voice (like David Gilmour). Good job from them and you.

Always been a PF fan, since the early 70s and seen them a couple times.
This cover is an extreme tribute to a world clas band from a world class band.
It for sure is not better than the original, nor is it worse. It's completely different. Never the less, I love it.

One of the best tributes to PF I've ever heard~!
For oddballs on Marko singing: he's been in super group called Northern Kings covering pop and rock songs in metal. And he was also singing on Sapattivuosi on the Dio years album. Sapattivuosi did covers of Black Sabbath in Finnish and when they got to Dio years they called Marko in.
And let me tell you, those are big shoes to fill.
this song fits perfectly and describes the mood and the situation the band was faced that time, especially that night... the last concert of Tarja...

Playing bass and singing also has the thing that at least in many Nightwish songs bass and drums are in different rhythm than vocals and guitar.
And still Marko seamlessly plays rather complex patterns on the bass while singing.
The grass was greener, the light was brighter and his voice was amazing-er

What makes this live performance even more special is that Jukka was most likely suffering from a migraine attack since he was holding his head between his hands & also hanging it very low at times. Tuomas also tried to signal Emppu by looking at & gesturing him to check out Jukka. Moreover, Tarja's husband asked Marko backstage after the show how on earth he could pull it off because also Marko was really sick that day.

This is still easily my favorite Marco performance in any of the groups he has been in.
You have to react to Tarot's Wings of Darkness from '86 and maybe do even a double reaction with also the version from 2011.

This is more a tribute to Pink Floyd than cover. However, this version is so awesome and they nailed it together. By the way...Marco did a solo album where he sings as main vocalist "My Fathers Voice" etc....do those too.
After i first his this version I went and checked out the original by Pink Floyd.....rabbid Floyd fan here, but I have to say, this version is better than the original. Just my opinion, but the phrase Division bell, strikes true for the time it was made, this was just before or just after the split I think.
From Tarot, "Tides" is an absolute MUST hear, "Grey" is one of my top favorite songs of all time across any band, also "Hell Knows" and "Undead Son" are great. IMO, studio version is ideal for all of those, Marco is great live but I've always preferred studio for them. I've been waiting so long for a Nightwish reactor to ask for Tarot stuff, so I hope you enjoy them :)

You say it is hard to cover a Pink Floyd song. Well, than it must be even harder to do what Nightwish did I suppose, which is cover a Pink Floyd song and make it, in my opinion, much better than the original.

Tarja was the vocalist, she wasn't aware it would be her last gig, during High hopes she was changing her costume. Jukka was holding his head because of migraine bought on by insomnia bought on by depression, he would eventually stop apart from the occasional guest spot, playing.
The bells on Toumas's finger nails and the Jack Sparrow on the keyboard.
Notice the subtle homage to pink Floyd, the circle above Jukka.

I’ve always said that Nightwish can change the female vocalist all the times they want and it’ll be alright, but the moment Marco leaves the band, it will never be the same again. Marco gives Nightwish something that makes it special.

Dude! Kiitos! A friend of mine was a life-long Pink Floyd fan from the Syd Barrett days. Played this for him once and he asked me to play it again and asked "Who is it!?"... Made a new Nightwish fan that day on the strength of this song!... Marko likes singing with Floor because he does not have to hold back any more!.... Nightwish used to play a lot of covers for which Marko was the singer - videos are here on YT! I didn't like that you talked over Emppu's guitar!!! Pausing and rewinding would have been better - otherwise, good job!

Marko top marks for this effort. I love PF original too. Credit due here to each band member, Tuomas for superbly transcribing into NW style, Emppu for his brilliant solos (hard to compete with Gilmour), and Jukka who just drives the whole piece forward.

Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah) is a classically trained guitarist, *bassist, songwriter and talented vocalist both solo and in harmony! He has a particularly fluid vocal style, which is all the more impressive bc the bass line is so different!
Must see Wings of Darkness by Tarot (Official Video 2011) Marco rocks out vocally and his brother Zachery is on lead guitar.
Thanks for doing this, Johnny 💞 one of my favorite Marko performances. His vocals are phenomenal. Master Passion Greed is a controversial song for some, but you really hear his intensity in how he uses his voice in that song. Endlessness is another one that’s just beautiful. But if you want to hear an “Anette/Marko” song that hasn’t been played much live, check out the album version of “Rest Calm” from the Imaginaerum Album 🥰 thanks again, Johnny

If you want to hear some more singing from Marco, check his other formation the Northern Kings.
In the cover "In The Air Tonight", he is the one singing only but I would also recommend some of their songs where the entire group does vocals, like "Kiss From a Rose" or "We Don't Need Another Hero".
Marko did this in a very good way. But the best score is Empuu with Marko together....

Anything from Tarot - Undead Indeed (Live at Rupla 2007) 💀 Rider of the Last Day is my personal favorite of Tarot songs ❤ actually it is one of my all time favorite from any band! And if I remember correctly Marko himself has said it is one of their best songs. From 'Back in the Fire' or 'Veteran of the psychic Wars' (Blue Öyster Cult cover) you'll get a better impression of Tommi Salmela the other singer of Tarot.
And for more Marko stuff you could try Northern Kings or Powerless Trio. All Hietala Power Trio has Marko on vocals his brother Saku on guitar and Marko's son Miro on drums.

Unusual to say, but US is behind on appreciation of a great art form; but I am committed on changing that. Only found this amazing band in last two months, but has been life changing. Their songs, camaraderie touch the soul. I am a proud new member of the NW Army!

Marko’s first band was Tarot, which he formed with his brother (guitarist). There are basically two singers in the band, but Marko is considered to be that lead singer.

I don't know if you've already been recommended it, but for more Marko goodness, you should check out The Islander. It's such an amazing song, with Marko as lead singer. While Your Lips Are Still Red is also a very powerful song.

They boys are all supposedly major PF fans, and so is Troy. I would be curious to see what Nightwish today (with Troy+Floor) would do with something else from Pink Floyd's back catalog. Maybe The Great Gig in the Sky off off Dark Side of the Moon?
Agree with other Pink Floyd fans comments. This is a great if darker version of one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs. Is it better? Doesn't matter.! Just depends how you are feeling at the time.

Also in Delain Marko is a singer. If you haven't reacted yet, "The Gathering" live Masters of Rock is very nice. Or "Nothing Left" live. Also "Sing to Me" lyrics video is really good.
