The Pinkfloyd version is dreamy, this one is haunting.
This song is already great on Pink Floyd's original concept. Nightwish got an already almost perfect song and made something different and still better in so many ways, without losing the original purpose and feeling of the song. Only masters can pull this off, people like Tuomas and his crew.
Marko's voice has a different feel too. Together it makes the song more powerful, more passionate.
@@black4pienus I totally agree. He amplifies the original feel of the song with his interpretation. It was like when Disturbed made his version of Sound of Silence.

Yes their live ‘Islander’ performance at Tampere always gives me such chills and goosebumps I wish it was available to download ya know, I have their version with Annette but the live version at Tempere with Floor cannot be beat!!
I think it was Toumas that describes this as a Pink Floyd tribute.. Because your correct, Pink Floyd is a vibe.. Nightwish did not try to recreate the Pink Floyd sound which is why this works so well.. Pivk Floyd song, but a Nightwish sound..
There is a wonderful man on UA-cam, Guylain Prince OFM, who is a friar, a Franciscan friar who loves metal, rock and prog. It creates great reactions, and even better analysis. And I think it was He who created the best term for Emppu - "tasteful virtuoso". I think that's the best word for Emppu I've ever heard - I totally agree!
Thank you Tom for showing some love to Emppu. I know this is a Marko showcase (and I love the guy to pieces) but Emppu is as close to a David Gilmour feel as you can get. His solos are so close to the original feel that it is really scary...
I love Nightwish and this is a great cover. As you said that you don't know Pink Floyd so well, I'm going to give you a huge gift! React to Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" from the PULSE concert. Not only is one of their best live performances ever but in the end of the song you will listen to what is considered THE BEST GUITAR SOLO EVER!!!!
Marko singing "Tides" with Tarrot is epic 🤘🙂👍. As are Tarrot's consert 'Heavy Metal on Ice' songs and video of "Guardian Angel" & "Things that crawl at night" 🤗
Tuomas did a slight key change to make the song more somber and poignant, but other than that it was unchanged. This version was praised by David Gilmour. #TeamMarko You should check out the Hu. It's metal done with traditional Mongolian instruments and vocal styles.
As a snobby Pink Floyd fan. This is one awesome cover. I feel I don't even want to call it a cover. More a darker reimagination of a song I love.

i think, i maybe wrong, but there had been a message a long time ago of one of Pink Floyd, who said that that was the best cover of their song they ever heard. but i can be wrong, but i wouldnt be surprised.
I cant recall any live cover/tribute with that amount of emotion and respect. Big kudos to Nightwish and especially Marko!

If you want a look at Baby Marko, check out Tarot's first music video Wings of Darkness from 1986, when he was just 20. ua-cam.com/video/VimogVM3i9Y/v-deo.html (That's his brother Zachary on lead guitar.) Amazing as it seems, Marko wasn't actually born with that epic beard! He always had the vocals, though.

What you're feeling is all the emotion going down at that concert, the last one of the tour, where they handed Tarja the letter of dismissal in 2005. You hardly see Emppu smile during the concert, Tuomas nearly loses it at times, Jukka is suffering, and you can sense Marko's deep emotions. At the very end of the concert there are girls/women in the audience in tears. I chatted with a woman who had been there at that concert, and she said when she read the open letter - which was put up on the Web the next morning - she understood why she'd found the concert so emotionally overwhelming. If you have any empathy skills, even from the distance of the video, you know there's something going on. If you do any more numbers from that concert, you'll notice that all the band are in serious mode, but Tarja is blissfully unaware.
OMG you better get with the program ...Pink Floyd is one of the best in History ...but that can come later i suppose ...so lets do this NIGHTWISH THING !!!!!...Oh and yes Nightwish took this song and made it their own ..to copy Pink Floyd would be absurd ...Great tribute to a legendary band

YES! Shows the talents of the guys and proves they were/are a force even without a female singer. Marko used to sing a lot of covers to give Tarja and Anette a rest during gigs.
Tuomas once said that this was a tribute, not so much a cover....

Exactly. They're great because of what they do and not for showing off. True masters don't need to showboat.
You might want to hear Jarkko Ahola. Live versions of Temple of King, Stormbringer, Stairway to Heaven etc. Jarkko and Marco have been singing at the same band Northern Kings and they are both excellent singers. Jarkkos scale is higher than Marcos, so many of songs where they both sing, Marco clears the path and Jarkko nails the sign, so to say :)

The movie you were thinking of is The Exorcist. Mike Oldfield is another extremely deep rabbit hole (I've got 28 of his albums) and you must do Pink Floyd at some point, they are mind-blowing live.

I'd love for you to check out Northern Kings' cover of Aha's "Take on Me" live a Eurovision. Northern Kings is a supergroup with Marko and three other great Finnish metal singers, and they all are incredible.
"The voice of my father" is also amazing from him..check that one.
NightWish is different because the music is what is important, not the showboating. They feel their love for the music, for each other and the fans is all that matters

Ahh YES YES when u said how u get so many feelings when u listen to Nightwish I couldn’t agree more, most of the time I dunno if I wanna laugh OR cry they’re just SOO freakin good it’s insane lol and tell me this performance didnt make u miss the shit outta Jukka too right, I mean of course I love Kai too, but still I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for our amazing Jukka!! :)

Greetings from Finland & thanks for your honest reaction to a great Nightwish tribute to Pink Floyd. You may have been told already that Marko almost lost his singing voice in 1996 when the surgeon accidentally damaged a nerve in Marko's vocal chords. It took Marko a lot of hard work to be able to sing again, but he lost his clean falsetto for good. Also, during this performance he was so sick that Tarja's Argentinian husband Marcelo Cabuli asked Marko backstage how he managed to do the entire "End of an Era" show at Hartwall Arena in 2005.

I was/am a Pink Floyd fan and was never aware of this song until Nighwish did this cover. Listened to PF's original and I prefer Nightwish's version. Compliments to Tuomus and Marco.

Dude you have to do all Pink Floyd. They are an experience in life much like Nightwish. Come to think of it Nightwish is the only other band I have ever known that has made an impact on me like Nightwish,

This is more like an evolution of PinkFloyd's song than a cover. You should listen to the original. To me, the last note is just killer.
