Fortunately there is so many brilliant talented bassists around Finland and around world to fill Markos shoes. The main thing is Marko can feel better in his private life. Although Marko being one of the greatest it doesn't mean there isn't someone better for the job in their own way. This gives me hope for Marko and Nightwish.
Couldn't agree more. Seems like their newer stuff was made on a timer. Corporate big wigs interfering with Thomas creative timeline, meaning rushing him.
Even though that new basist is good there is no way he is going to replace Marko. There is an instant quality drop in Nightwish performances after Marko left the band. Honestly when thinking of Floor she is the best female vocalist in the world but you will never know if she is going to sing it trying to save her voice or giving the best that she can, or is the Wacken 2013 the peak of her career as a vocalist.
In my opinion this is one the best performances of Marko ever, if not THE best. A great song by Pink Floyd already, and what Nightwish did here is just amazing.😄👍
Not a cover. A tribute. A thank you. An homage. This hits my emotions every time I hear it. Who else than Nightwish could match the tone of the original so closely?
Some late reaction, but I have to mention that Sir David Gilmour himself sayd that he was blown away by this cover. When this was mentioned to Tuomas he replied with..., "it wasn't a cover, it was just another version of the same great song!"
And this is why the whole world is crying Marko's retirement, he is one of a kind artist. If you want to see a different side of Marko, react to The Islander live at Tampere
He didn't retire. He's taking a year off from public life and music, but he is scheduled to perform four concerts this year with Nightwish. They have them listed as "Nightwish featuring Marko Hietala".
And the best part is... Jukka played this concert while having a hardcore migraine :o . At 3.14 Tuomas nodded to the left, to give a signal to Emppu to check how Jukka feels. He did that. at 5.08 you can see Emppu jumping onto the stage from the drum platform.
EMPUU....... MAGIC FINGERS............... What a fucking INCREDIBLE BAND. I been there since 1999... No JOKE!!!!!.... 20+ years of fucking amzing music. I seen them 5 times. :))) I WILL GO MORE!.
An absolutely amazing tribute to this song. This one from the End Of An Era concert. This was the night that Tarja Turunen was given THE letter. Just love Emppu's guitar work in this
For all of you out there who have not experienced Nightwish, you have just witnessed the only band able to do a cover of Pink Floyd justice. Everything they touch is magic. Great reaction my friend! The journey down the rabbit hole continues...
And now you know why Marko is amazing and why we Nightwish followers were so sad when he left the band earlier this year. He was so much more than the bassist 2nd vocalist. Nice reaction!
I love this song! I saw Floyd this 1994 tour with my 8-month pregnant ex-wife our son that was born a month later I swears to this day that's why he likes rock and roll and loves playing guitar. And nightwish did this song all the Justice I love it!
They are more than musicians, they are magicians. With this song the wizzard as front singer. I tried to break the like button as requested but broke my touch screen instead.
One of the things that make this performance even more powerful to me is the fact that this was the last show with their original singer, Tarja. There was a lot of turmoil within the band at that time, and at the end of that show, Tarja was going to be handed her dismissal letter, a fact that was known by all members of the band (except her). Thus, this particular show has a special vibe. It could have been the final show of Nightwish, the night their High Hopes were dashed.
The arrangement of the music in this version is phenomenal. Marko's vocals bring a different feel to the lyrics and with it being a tribute to Pink Floyd, or any band for that matter, this is up there with the best of them. Unquestionably some of the best musicians around
Old Metal/Rock Head hear I’ve seen Pink Floyd in concert three time they are one of my all time favorite bands, I’ve been a fan of Nightwish for 20 years it’s on my bucket list to see them live. They made High Hopes their own. I actually, dare I say it, love Nightwishes version better. Good jobs on your reaction enjoying young people discovering what good music is. Check out Sancta Terra by Epica featuring Floor Jansen at Epica Retrospective show. Rock On Stay Safe!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I really enjoy your “in the moment” style and enthusiasm. I’m hard pressed to imagine a more capable band than Nightwish to take on such a complex piece of music as a Pink Floyd tune and rework it in such an appropriate manner. Marco reaches inside the listener with that voice. Thomas has such impeccable grasp of what music and the human condition is, a tremendous emotional intellect.
Good music is not about age. A generation separates us, my sons are your age and older but still I resonate perfectly with your comment. Many times I am skeptical about the direction in which the world is going today, but when I see young people like you, I think that humanity still has chances.
This comment made my grown ass man emotional. I am looking forward to setting up a setup with three amplified hifi headphones to share nighwish and more with my parents who are mainly into lighter older music. Metal music isn't only for metalheads or younger people. They are also for middle aged and grandpas and grandmas. Beautiful music is for everyone and should be shared with everyone.
This is the End of an Era performance of that song. End of childhood innocence captures the vibe of that night. The band made the decision to fire their first singer Tarja, a childhood friend of Tuomas earlier. While they played the song Tarja was doing her last costume change for Nightwish ever. She didn't know that she would receive the letter after the show. The division bell was rung. At the time the situation in the band was quite tense. They played High Hopes at other shows before (I got to see them performing this live in Stuttgart during that tour). Not sure if that was already foreshadowing.
Listen to this song again when you're older. It feels different. I heard this song as a adult when it came out, and now that I'm on the downward slope it hits even harder. Great review and I appreciate your passion.
The last note, the last bell the last klang, always gets to me. How powerful can one note be? Marko, Marko, Marko how will we be able to do without you. I don't want to even imagine it. The power, the passion and the incredible emotion you bring to Nightwish. The performance on its own is remarkable. I just don't know...
I saw Pink Floyd perform this song in 1994. It was a wonderful experience, and that concert still stands as the best I've attended. I was hoping that Nightwish would've played this when I saw them in 2012, but they didn't. Oh well, that was still a fantastic show, too.
Thank you so much for reacting this Masterpiece, absolutely one of the greatest covers, I've ever heard. I have listened to this song many times and never get bored with it. Probably never will. Overwhelming performance and a great tribute to Pink Floyd. Marco’s leave from the Band still hurts a lot, I miss him dearly 🥲❣️
Wonderful :) Nightwish and Pink Floyd are best stories and experiences you can get in music, i suggest doing Nightwish Dead Boys Poem live Buenos Aires or "Sleeping Sun" live in Tampere, yet if you enjoyed Marko singing "While your lips are still red" live in Wembley is a great mesage all three will let you on a different side of Nightwish, waiting for the next one! 💯🎶🎸🙏

It’s impossible not to be moved by this performance. It’s easy to argue that this is an improvement over the original. I know, I know, you can’t have a cover without an original, but I’m adamant that Nightwish took a decent song and made it an epic experience. I’m lucky, I saw them perform this at a small venue in 2003/4 (can never remember exactly). Mind blowing then, mind blowing now.
Love this song so much, and emppu his solo's are beautiful, the hole band is as always amazing. Yes we will miss Marco, but that is more for music in general, i love him as an artist an as a songwriter and as a member of Nightwish. But we must have also respect for Nightwish, no one is indispensable. We have also a very good replacement for Jukka, i have to learn Kai his way of making music, and now i love it also, He is very, very good also. I like Nightwish of his music, this band has their own sound, nusic intro's, lyrics, key changes, it is all about the music for me. And some interpretations from singers we like more than others, but the music dont change.
This is the reason Marko is such a huge loss for Nightwish. He brings so much passion to everything he does. He is truly unique.

That marching beat with Emppu's first solo!!!! Jukka rocks! That second solo!!!!! Nightwish Rocks! Now you know why I love this version!!!!!!!
Emppu in a velvet suit, shredding the purple guitar. Priceless.
Some late reaction, but I have to mention that Sir David Gilmour himself sayd that he was blown away by this cover. When this was mentioned to Tuomas he replied with..., "it wasn't a cover, it was just another version of the same great song!"
