The original was one of my favorites of Pink Floyd. Serious Pink Floyd fan. Then I heard this one. I'm still a Pink Floyd fan... but this version haunts me.
I saw Pink Floyd perform this live in '94. It was awesome, and David Gilmour performed such a hauntingly epic solo on a lap steel guitar near the end, as only Gilmour can. Emppu's solo was pretty epic too, but in a different way. Marco crushed this song, though. It's one of the most moving vocal experiences I have ever listened to. I'll give Floor her due, but Marco's voice is world class too.
Exactly! Huge PF fan here, and High Hopes was one of my favorite tracks. The beauty of the NW version is, I don't have to pick a favorite. Because its not the same song. The PF version and the NW version, are both my favorite
I'm one of the incredibly lucky bastards who got to witness this live. I'll never forget the atmosphere. There's another layer to those lyrics, you see: this was from their last concert with Tarja -- the guys knew that, she and the audience didn't. There was this odd, off vibe to the entire concert, and when this one rolled around and it was just the guys on the stage (she was having a break to change clothes and rest her voice) I remember thinking how odd it is that even though an important element was clearly missing, everything felt... right. Like it should be. That feeling started making a whole lot of more sense after I got home that night and read the infamous open letter.
Likewise. And I was supposed to be seeing them again at Wembley in about a week. Unfortunately Corona has put a stop to that. Have to wait until May. I can't wait to hear what Floor does with all those challenges Tuomas has thrown at her with the new album.
I was there, too. The odd vibe was in the air indeed. This song had a special meaning at that particular concert because of the upcoming open letter to be released soon afterwards. I had a hunch but no knowledge, Jukka just gave me a wry smile the night before when I tried to ask about Marcelo/Tarja relations. I knew there was something brewing but still, it was a shock.
Me too... Incredibly lucky to witnessed this and Tampere 2015... Didn't understand the magic back then, bit too hammered. But now seeing this getting a new life through the rectors is so awesome...
Most impressive was Emppu, did you see that FLASH, jumping all over the stage, and showing off during his two solo's....Emppu is the most humble, (most underrated), guitarist I have ever heard....He is one of the cog's in the wheel which makes Nightwish turn so well, only four band members did this song, seemed like an army....Three years listening to Nightwish, and haven't heard a bad song yet....Everyone has a favorite, I'll tell you my least favorite, NONE
@@RaymondBCrisp i disagree cause Rush had way more following than Nightwish specialy in the states compared to how few people know Nightwish there, so he had more exposure
@@pedjavukmirovic6770 Third league? Regular band? I hope you aren't referring to their playing ability, because I will have to rebuke you on that. They are first rate musicians, at least the two surviving members still are. Neil Peart, their percussionist, passed away from brain cancer in January of this year. He was widely considered one of the best, if not THE BEST, rock percussionist ever. Why do I call him a percussionist and not just a drummer? You'd have to see him to understand that. There's a saying associated with Neil Peart. "Neil Peart is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer!" Truth! I challenge you to watch them perform Xanadu Live from Exit Stage Left (1981...yes, I'm old) and tell me they are "third league!" Go on...watch it: ua-cam.com/video/VuHS-gjMiVw/v-deo.html Xanadu is as epic as anything Nightwish has performed. They have a catalogue of music that is huge. This is indeed an absolutely amazing cover. I wouldn't even call it a cover, rather a tribute song to Pink Floyd. Performing their song, respecting it but playing it in their own way. Amazing.
That, right there, is one of the finest voices in rock/metal or whatever genre you care to name. Marko may not be well known in the commercialised pop world, but he sure is in the metal community, and performances like this is why. He is perhaps the only vocalist who could hold his own, singing alongside the Valkryie goddess herself, Floor Jansen. The whole band were on point, from Emppu's soaring, Gilmour style solo, Jukka pounding the drums into submission, with some great fills along the way, and Tuomas doing no more, and no less, than what the performance required. As has been stated many times, this is not a cover, but a tribute, with the Nightwish magic added.
Marco is magical!!! And yes...Nightwish becomes one with their music...unlike any other band! And OMG....Emppu killed it on the solo!! And Jukka just went into a different dimension on the drums!!! And what can you say about Tuomas.... He is a musical genius!!! Plain and simple...!
Christmas song by Marko and the boys. Raskasta Joulua- Tulkoon Joulu live. and Marko In TAROT Guardian Angel On Ice & Things That Crawl At Night from Finland. Markos bigbrother on guitar amazing.
Hello, Rocky. As a die-hard Pink Floyd fan, I have to admit that THIS tribute/cover touches me in a way that far surpasses the original. I can listen to this song all day long. One of my favorite Marko solos, for sure. Wishing you a Blessed Christmas Season. Stay safe and healthy. Praying for a better 2021.....💖💛🎄 EDIT: I typed the above before watching your reaction. I wasn't disappointed. Nightwish is definitely an extension of Tuomas' inner "workings"....his love of child-like hopes and dreams and feelings of awe and extreme pain. It all comes through in this song, with Marko's beautiful interpretation of the lyrics and vocals, Emppu's INCREDIBLE solos, and of course Jukka, keeping the "foundation" strong and striking. Absolutely FANTASTIC reaction, as I knew it would be. Thank you!😘
Amazing reaction ! NW army here ! "7 days to the wolves" Live at Wembley 2015 !!! It's a must bro !!!! Amazing reaction ! Much much love from Romania !!!
When I watched this video for the first time... I thought it was a "Nightwish" song. Later I understood. That I don't have a bad ear for music. After all, I met two groups in one day) Thank you brother\m/
I’ve been listening to this song the past weeks and yesterday decided to listen to the original again...don’t mean to offend any Pink Floyd lovers, but I was shocked. 🙉🙈 I really prefer this cover.
Amazing cover, Marco and Emppu did wonders, those two solo's were fantastic! Wish Emppu had more solo's in Nightwish music :) Great reaction as always! I don't want to brag but it is still incredible to me that I had privilege to hear original High Hopes performed live by Pink Floyd in 1994 Division Bell tour and this Nightwish cover in 2004 on this tour, last one with Tarja. It is funny, my father introduced me to Pink Floyd when I was a kid, I grew up listening to them because of dad, and they are one of my favorite bands. He took me to that concert, I was 18 then. Later at the beginning of 2000's I introduced my father to Nightwish, my new favorite band, and he fell in love with them immediately, so I took him to Nightwish concert. I guess favor returned 😅😅
My friend (now passed on) was a huge Pink Floyd fan. I had heard this song dozens of times before I heard this. It was so captivating to see how faithful Nightwish is to the original, the keys, the drums 'marching', the 1st guitar solo are so lively Pink Floyd - It's like I'm at my friend's place listening the Floyds. Yet Emppu and Jukka at the drums manage to turn it metal, but with a clear Pink Floyd vein. It's so faithful, respective - like you said feeling... the original - yet so new and innovative.
In my teens when Pink Floyd arrived on the scene in the late 60s, and I love them to bits, but this is something else. "They become the music." You're so right.
The band was in the right state of mind for this during that performance. They had become the music more than anyone else who has attempted a cover/tribute to High Hopes.
This is a fantastic tribute to Pink Floyd more than actually a cover. Its phenomenal. Nightwish commands you to feel the music and there’s nothing you can really do about it.
Being a long life PF fan (I am a 65 y old Dutch bloke) ad seen them several times, I must say this is the ultimate cover! Paying tribute to a world class band by world class musicians. Enjoyed a so much and nice to see you got realy into it.
Do Marco's 'Voice of my Father' for his emotional side and 'Stones' for his humorous side. This particular cover is great on so many levels, Marco's vocal and Empuu two solos, especially.
Who the Hell would ever think to sing a song about "stones" except maybe in the "Sesame Street" mindset? Well, Marco Sings about "stones" in the "metal" mindset! OK! Good enough for me! Then , uh, "Voice of my Father"... I will not go there again for a long time! That song seems to summon those damn invisible onion ninjas! Screw those hard to find foes! OW! Thought I found a ninja, but it was a boulder landing on my foot! Perhaps Marco is like Ludo from Labyrinth?
