The video doesn't explain how to make underpaint wash. Is it like mixing brown paint with a lot of linseed oil, or the paint should be mixed turpentine or white spirit? I appreciat your reply.

@@williamFlat I use Liquin Light Gel (Winsor & Newton) as a medium. It's a fast drying medium that allows you to resume working on the same painting the next day. For my washes I use a mix of Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ocher and a lot of Liquin.

A vibrant orange, red or yellow directly next to an almost pure white highlight can create a very "hot" glow, which the warm underpainting is very helpful with. Additionally, a saturated warm color along the edge of an object with a bright backlight (where we see only the shadowed side of the object) can create this same glowy feeling. Alternatively, if you want to paint a scene with a cold main light source, it can be useful to start with a blue, purple or green underpainting.

Burnt Sienna is an amazing colour. It seems to go with any scene. It can be the sun in clouds, or mixed with blue, the shadows. It can be the colour of rust, or an old barn, or of a field of grain, or dead grasses poking out though snow, skin tones, rocks, sand...it seems endless.
I like how you let its warmth glow in the clouds here. Very nice!

@@PaintingSkies1 Yes. Ive been teaching beginners the Bob Ross technique (alla prima) for quite a while now. I did my training back in 2000 in Roermond in your home country. Its not to your standards but a way of getting people started with a little early success. Its also a way of break the fear of having a happy accident. Everything is fixable in oils. I look forward to watching many more of your videos. Best wishes from Paul, Terri and our fur babies Henny Puss and Poppy Cat 😸😸

@@PaulRansonArt I've been watching Bob Ross more than once and with some admiration. Though I'm not a big fan of his work, he certainly popularized painting. And got rich doing it. Something I didn't manage up till now... Love your cats names.

Thank you! I'm not an extremely talented painter, but I put in the hours. And that's equally important as talent.

Very interesting. It gives a very realistic, vibrant look to the skies, that is for sure. It reminds me of the paintings of Canaletto, these have the same glow, which always fascinated me. And I believe he even used red as underpainting, but please correct me if I'm wrong. And thank you for sharing this video.

Thank you! I'm not sure if Canaletto used a red underpainting. The Venetians introduced it in the 16th century and Canaletto lived in the late 17th/early 18th century. It's possible he applied the technique as well. The glow you're referring to certainly suggests it.
