Thank you so much for again generously sharing your expertise. You also give encouragement to those of us who like to paint in layers and glazes. Nowadays there’s so much encouragement to do alla prima work, finish the full painting in an hour or two with lots of heavy paint texture that it’s good to see beauty created this way, too. Thank you!
Thank you, Patricia! I'm really pleased to hear my videos are an encouragement. And yes, you're right, alla prima work is sometimes considered as intrinsically better than glazing, probably because of the modern emphasis on spontaneity and visible brushwork. I'll just keep layering.
Your videos and artwork are amazing to me. I have always been an admirer of clouds. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful artwork and videos. May you and yours stay healthy and happy. Sending lots of positive energy and love.
Good day Janhendrik. I can't believe that I am watching you on the same day you posted this video. It may be your best yet! Your sharing of the step-by-step process of selecting, mixing and applying the paint has been in other videos, but not presented all together like this one. Many, many thanks my friend. Hope you are in good health and that you and the cats are enjoying good weather in Holland. We are experiencing our wettest spring ever here in Oregon. All the best, Neale Quenzel
Thank you, Neal! I'm really grateful you appreciate the approach I'took this time. We're in good health, cats included. Hope you are well too. We're experiencing a very dry spring, as opposed to you in Oregon...
Good to hear you appreciate the stepwise approach, Amit! Regarding your request: my full length tutorials just about cover my method of painting white clouds: www.paintingskies.com/video/
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques and these wonderful paintings you do. I'm enjoying your videos And doing some of these ocean scenes but the one thing that's got me is that vibrant blue color I cannot seem to get. You have a chance could you share.....in never satisfied with my sky's. Thank u
A warm hello from Southeast Michigan, USA! We are finally having a warm trend and it feels great! Thank you for describing in such detail the steps you are taking and your thoughts on your reasoning for these. One of those details that I was grateful for was the placement of the reflections in the water. I love seeing your kitties, they are so precious. I am very glad to see that you are safe and look well. Did you know that here in the States they are beginning to offer cadmium free paints? I haven't purchased any as of yet, I wonder if they will perform the same as their counterparts. I still have to stay in except for the occasional ride or doctors appointment. I am at high risk for the virus, I have all my shots. So good to see you, stay safe, and healthy. I can hardly wait for the next video already. :)
Thank you, Marcia! Pleasure to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I wasn't aware of the cadmium free paints on offer in the US. Interesting development. We're ok, cats included. Stay safe & healthy!
Very interesting statement about what it looks like up close. Is the paper only for study paintings and not to be framed? Unfamiliar with the uses of it. Outstanding and thank you.
I buy my stipple brush in a local hardware store. here in Holland. Its normal use is for painting doors and window frames. Here's a link to buy your stippler online: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-scholastic-white-bristle-stencil-brush/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dstippling%20brush.
When I'm doing smaller paintings, I like to sit by the window, but for the large panels I use a wall-mounted easel and then I rely on artificial light. It gets pretty close to daylight actually.
Just found this video. The simple explanations of the materials and process is what us beginners love to find. The reasoning behind each step stands in sharp contrast to most YT videos, where the viewer is left to wonder "Why" the painter chose to use a particular paint, brush, etc. I would like to see more videos in the future like this one for UA-cam. Edit: Jan, I don't recall if you mentioned when you allow the base layers to dry, or are you doing Wet on Wet techniques?
Thank you, Heinz! Really pleased to hear you appreciate my approach. In general I'm allowing the base layers to dry before continuing. If that is not the case I will mention it. For example when I'm doing a cloud on a still wet blue sky.
Even though your paintings is a mess up close, they most certainly is amazing from a distans. I wish i could paint seascapes like that, but when i try, i think my paintings look to comic book and not realistic. The sky is not a problem, it´s the rest.
I know what you mean. Clouds give a painter lots of freedom, while landscape elements need a more exact rendering. I did a tutorial on painting waves that may be of interest to you: ua-cam.com/video/WjJmIixBH1g/v-deo.html (UA-cam trailer). For landscape elements like grasses and bushes I often use my most ragged brushes: ua-cam.com/video/NQHiavWH41g/v-deo.html. Hope this helps!
At least 4 or 5 layers, provided you start with thinned down layers. Wrote a short article about it on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2015/01/canvas-or-board.html Hope this helps!
I'm afraid I don't know of an alternative for the Canson paper. I've been searching for it a long time myself. I buy it at Hornbach's, a German hardware store, with locations in Holland. What you could do is buy a smooth 290 grs water color paper and apply a layer of Gesso. That's what I used to do. Hope this helps!
Because it dries really fast, which makes it harder to do the smooth transitions I'm going for. On top of that, oil paint has this wonderful creamy quality that I don't see in acrylics.
You will never achieve the same level of Brillance, acrylics dry to fast , I tried every method and I quickly went back to the oils so I could blend and move the colors around as I whished I'm sticking with oils no compartment. @@PaintingSkies1

Very interesting statement about what it looks like up close. Is the paper only for study paintings and not to be framed? Unfamiliar with the uses of it. Outstanding and thank you.
Works on paper are mostly for study purposes, but sometimes I'll have them glued to MDF board (the Marouflé technique) and framed.
What no cats!, Thanks for the video, especially naming the colors you used,, Thanks again.

@@PaintingSkies1 Many thanks! Actually I am coming to Amsterdam in 2 weeks, I will check hardware stores. I love your work!!
Maybe a soft "chalk paint" brush will suffice? The round version.
The smaller stencil brushes can be found at the big art and craft stores.
Thanks I never new such a thing existed, I have no art stores whare I live, i will look it up on the net, thanks again.
Magnifique !
c'est de l'acrylique ?
Merci beaucoup! C'est de l'huile.
Excellent and very informative. I see you sit by the window for natural light. Do you ever use artificial "cool" light?
When I'm doing smaller paintings, I like to sit by the window, but for the large panels I use a wall-mounted easel and then I rely on artificial light. It gets pretty close to daylight actually.

¡Muchas gracias, Ana! Me alegra que te guste el resultado. Tengo curiosidad por qué estás 'casi te asusto' por la forma en que aplico la pintura.

@@anaperrier2637 Gracias por tu explicación, Ana. Claro!
Wow!!!!!
Thank you!
I noticed you're setting your hand on the surface as you paint details. Does this mean you've allowed the base colors to dry before proceeding?
That's correct. I work in layers, so the previous layer is dry when I resume painting.
Even though your paintings is a mess up close, they most certainly is amazing from a distans. I wish i could paint seascapes like that, but when i try, i think my paintings look to comic book and not realistic. The sky is not a problem, it´s the rest.

How many coats of gesso would you normally use on the m.d.f. boards?
At least 4 or 5 layers, provided you start with thinned down layers. Wrote a short article about it on my blog:

I'm using oils. You probably missed it in the voice over. I added it in the video description. Thanks!
