  • Painting hazy clouds takes a specific approach, especially with regard to color. In a clip of just about 10 minutes Dutch painter Janhendrik Dolsma demonstrates how to do it.
    Dolsma (1950) is an expert painter of clouds, beaches, dunes and of course the ocean. On his UA-cam channel he shares a lifetime of painting experience in short tutorial videos with an emphasis on painting clouds. His full length tutorials (over 60 minutes) have found their way to buyers all over the world. Full tutorials can be found here: www.paintingskies.com/video/
    Dolsma participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, Spain, Belgium and the USA.

    The clouds left me speechless.The light passing from within the clouds through all over the sky was incredibly done. I love when people have the talent to play with light so well that it becomes the main focus of the painting. Fabulous work!

    What a wonderful painting Janhendrik!
    I took me years to arrive at the realisation that greys can be one of the most beautiful ways to depict nature. Greys dont have to cold and dreary. I emailed a few painting pics to a fellow painters cell phone, (where they dont look all pixelated like on a full computer screen for some reason that I dont understand) so he could see what I meant, and it changed his whole outlook on painting.
    I hope this video does the same for your viewers.

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  Місяць тому +1

      You're so right, greys can be warm and poetic, instead of cold and dreary. I learned a lot looking at some of the painters of the Haagse School, the 19th century Dutch version of Impressionism. They knew how to capture the sometimes (quite often rather) grey Dutch weather, with different shades of grey.

    This was a fabulous watch.
    As someone who’s enjoyed watching painting shows for decades and finally took art classes to become a beginner painter, I find it very generous of y’all showing many of your techniques and processes to educate. I’m not so naive to think what I see you do, (simply enough it seems) I can do too.. It takes thousands of hours to skillfully work the tools and media; and the time in study to master composition…. Geez.
    But I loved to watch your painting transform. It seems you try to make each little detail as it’s own project or piece of art; whether it’s a cloud’s silver lining, glazing / wash the color of the sea, or composing beach foam. That’s patience.
    Anyways
    Thanks.

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  2 роки тому

      Thank you, Serrie. You're right, it takes quite a few years to learn how to do a painting like this. Don't aim for perfection, enjoy each little step forward and you'll be amazed what you can accomplish. Like in the Samuel Becket poem: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." My kind of guy.

    Thank you so much for sharing with us the process of this beautiful atmospheric work. I enjoy your tutorials and extra videos so much! a great teacher for me. I would like to ask a question that I kept in mind also after painting along with the reflection tutorial - how can one figure out when is the right situation to have a glazing? is it mainly due to reserving texture(in the sea or the dunes)?is it always recommanded in a case of inhancing shadow (the sand)? thank you so much for your help.

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  Рік тому

      I use glazing for 2 reasons. Firstly when I want to decrease contrast. I use it mostly when painting clouds and always in combination with Transparent White. Secondly when I want to darken a surface, but I don't want to loose to much detail (for example a shadow on the beach). In the latter case I just dilute the paint and I don't use Transparent White. Hope this answers your question!

    Amazing as usual. Silly question, but I see you using cups of some sort to hold your paint--are they styrofoam cups?

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  Рік тому +1

      Indeed, in this video I used styrofoam cups (dispensable soup cups, to be exact). Since a couple of years I replaced them with card board (again) soup cups. Where would I be without soup cups...

    Do you use a quick drying medium?

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  Рік тому +4

      I use Liquin Light Gel as a medium, a Winsor & Newton product. It’s a fast drying medium that allows you to continue working on a painting the next day. There are 3 types of Liquin: Liquin Original, Liquin Fine Detail and Liquin Light Gel. I use the Gel because it’s very suitable to paint large surfaces.
      If you want too find out how to use it, you could download one of my full length tutorials (over 60 min.) at www.paintingskies/video.

      You're right, it didn't turn out the way I planned it, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I made the decision to introduce the waves and I still think that was a good decision. One of the hardest parts of painting is determining when a painting is finished and in this case I might have stopped too soon. After reading your remark I took another good look at the painting and decided to make a few changes: www.janhendrikdolsma.nl/producten/. Thanks!
