Dear Janhendrik, you're the definition of a master, so generous in your teching method, so calm and so skilled! My husband and I would be happy to receive you under the incredible skies of Mallorca if ever you (and your companion) wish to come for a visit! I'm an art historian, we're both multicultural (coming from Brazil and living in many places in Europe, even the NL). Consider it seriously! All the best, Themis
Thank you for your kind words, they're very encouraging. Thank you also for your more than kind invitation to visit you on Mallorca. I will surely keep it in mind!
I enjoy watching you paint. Thank you for posting and explaining!
My pleasure, Jacquelyn!
Superlative control of light, colour and contrast. Fantastic contemporary work. Love it.
Thank you so much, Mark!

Glorious
Thank you!
What an enjoyable process you have shared. Super relaxing and the end result is that we see all the micro nuances you’ve created and how important they are to creating this atmosphere. The sum of all the parts…brilliant!
Thank you, really pleased you enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much for sharing your process to students like me. ❤ I live by the beach and take a lot of photos of these sunsets walking my dog. I want to try some of these techniques I’m learning from you in the future.
My pleasure, Brandy. Must be great living so close to the beach. I'm not at all envious ;)
Beautiful
Thank you, Melinda!
Amazing! Thank you for your generous tutorial and guidance. I am currently working on a sunset sky and your lesson has proved invaluable for me. I was unable to get Kings Blue where I live, so I mixed ultramarine blue and white with a touch of phthalo blue. However, I am still struggling with blending the sky for a smooth gradient!
Thank you so much for your lesson.
Thank you, Arva, I'm really pleased to hear my sunset video has been helpful! If you're interested in my full length tutorials, please go to www.paintingskies.com/video.

@@maritzasamaniego2958 ¡Gracias, contento de que te guste!
Beautiful painting! I wish you would also show us more of how you follow your sketch and photos. I get confused when I paint as to which to follow more, my photo or my sketch.
Thank you, Mike. I think you should follow your sketch, rather than your reference photo, but in the end your decisions should be based on the painting you're working on. Trying to copy a sketch exactly (or a photo) is never a good idea, because it's a different situation. Think of the size, for example. A painting needs its own decisions, which can be supported by a sketch, but not replaced.
@@PaintingSkies1 I see you points. Very good. Thanks. I appreciate that.
Sunsets are so breath taking and you do them justice when you paint them. Lately you have shown only one cat didn't you have two? Merry Christmas to you and your family, our family hopes that you enjoyed yours. We are having a relaxing one. Just enjoying our decorations and each other.
Thank you, Marcia, good to hear from you! Yes, we have 2 cats, but one of them is more of an outdoor cat, that's why I have less footage of her. She is in the sunset video though, looking at her step sister from a chair.
Hope you're enjoying the Holidays. Best wishes for you and yours.
@@PaintingSkies1 We have two cats as well. One is about 13 years old and is a grey tabby domestic short hair, she is a gentle little lady. Our other is a black tabby domestic short hair who is now about 7 years old. The black cat is a male and quite a bit bigger than his "sister". I very much enjoy seeing your cats. We are enjoying our holidays very much, thank you for asking. Since I cannot go out or have people in cause I am at high risk to covid and the other respiratory viruses around this year the one thing that I enjoy so very much is watching and listening to your videos, so thank you so much for doing them. I almost have everything that I need for my studio and after tax season (I am an accountant and work from home with a CPA, so I will shortly be doing taxes) I will hopefully start painting again after a 48 years absence from it. I want to paint landscapes photo realistic. I didn't paint this way years ago cause it was frown upon but I didn't understand why. I painted just shy of it, if that makes sense. So wish me luck. I treasure and listen carefully to your decision process as you paint so that I hopefully can apply it when I start painting again. Happy New Years to you and your family and to the cats! Once again thank you so very much and I look forward to seeing your next videos.
@@marciahorton2203 Sorry to hear you're unable to go out because of covid. Must be hard. But we make do, don't we?
I gave up painting to for about 20 years (for a variety of reasons) and when I picked it up again in the mid-nineties I somehow was a better painter, despite the fact (or maybe thanks to) that I hadn't been painting. Hope this is the case with you as well.
Say hi to your cats!
Beautifully done 👏
Thanks, Phill!
I am in love 😍

Thanks! Works great, doesn't it?
@@PaintingSkies1 yes ☺️
Another wonderful video. What is the subtle background music you use?
Good to hear you enjoyed the video. I did the background music myself. Before becoming a full time painter I was (beside being a high school art teacher) a musician. Long time ago.
@@PaintingSkies1 Very cool:)
Do you use fast drying oils ? Like a Griffin alkyd ? Only that it looks dry the next day
I use a fast drying medium, Liquin Light Gel (Winsor & Newton), which allows you to resume painting the next day.
Thankyou , I am currently doing a series on lightning and storm clouds and your lessons are very very helpful
@@neilrobinson171 That's great to hear, Neil, thanks!
Thank you for listing what colors you're using for each section. I had never heard of scheveningen blue before. Is it closer to a cyan than typical blue?
Yes, it's a greenish blue, a bit like Cerulean Blue, but more saturated.
Belíssimas cores
Isso é ótimo para ouvir, obrigado!
Hello Janhendrik. If I may ask ... I'm not confused over the rule of thirds, but I do have questions. In this particular painting your horizon line looks less than a third from the bottom, and obviously thats' okay. For my next painting I'd like to have a low horizon line, exposing more sky, compositionally I believe it'll look better that way. What would be an expectable measurement if I break that rule? (I hope I explained that properly)
Yes, you explained it properly. The rule of thirds is helpful to make a balanced composition, but the results are often not very exciting. I have often experimented to see how low I could position the horizon and still have a decent result. My conclusion is that you can go as low as you like, but you need enough space to make the ocean look real. You need room for reflections, maybe waves or a strip of beach. Hope this helps!
@@PaintingSkies1 it does help a lot, thank you. I kind of knew the answer, but I wanted to hear it from a pro.
I want to try this. What are the dimensions? Seems to be 3x10 ratio? Maybe a 4x12?
The sizes are 40x120 cm, which is roughly 16x47".
Brilliant.
Just out of interest, in my experience, art tuition in uk art schools involves NO practical demonstrations of any sort.
Maybe the private ones have them.
Thank you. There is a strong emphasis in today's art education on originality and authenticity. Practical demonstration would lead to mere imitation. I beg to differ. In the 19th century art students would copy works of art in a museum. And yet this century has een quite a few new art movements. You have to know the language to be able to change it.
🥰
Thanks!
You covered up The Sun!? Naughty painter 😅
Yep
Great, but adverts within a minute
Thanks, Joe. Unfortunately I don't have any influence on the timing of the adverts...
Please stop painting with fingers. Its bad for your health.
Thank you for your concern. I've been painting with my fingers for decades. In art school, back in the sixties and seventies, it was more or less standard practice. Could you please inform me where you found this information?
your painting is great.but problem is every one try to learn how to painting it.why not to make a full tutorial with every details.people are respect for you.but not selfish one
Thank you for your kind words about my work. If you're interested in step by step instructions, you could consider downloading one of my full length tutorials at www.paintingskies.com/video.
or he could sell a more in detail totorial ,i dont see how hes being selfish
