This song is about how the world is glued to the TV and the violence all over and how people get thrills from suffering and negativity. However it’s open to interpretation, that’s what I believe it’s about 🔥 #VICARIOUS #TOOL = awesomeness

Funny enough 2 months before I discovered this song I decided to delete my Facebook, because I kept seeing stories about tragedies, murder etc. and my friends send me the same shit like ''OMG have you seen this!'' It was really just instant depression from early in the morning and I couldn't understand why people found it fascinating to share sad stuff. This song spoke to me on a whole other level.

You can't go wrong with any Tool song. Each one is a masterpiece in itself. Just cover them all. Us Tool junkies will come back to watch you react to them all. Watching someone experience their music for the first time is incredible.

You've probably been told this already, but I'm going to lay it all out as simply as I can for you.
The vocalist in Tool (Maynard James Keenan) writes (or wrote) a lot of his lyrics to be taken as sarcasm. In Vicarious, it might sound to someone who's not really familiar with his lyrics like he is a person who likes sitting on the sofa watching people get killed on CNN with a bag of potato chips in the comfort/safety of his own home. But he is really taking a massive jab at those types of people by writing the vocals from the perspective of someone who does absorb tragedy as a form of entertainment, which like you said, is the majority of people on Earth.
The last couple versus in the song are the strongest arguments towards his actual point:
"Creduolous at best your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men" - despite our violent nature as humans, many of us still have a desire to believe people are ultimately good beings at our inner core. However, this is "at best" a misinformed way of thinking.
"Pull your head on out your hippie haze and give a listen, shouldn't have to say it all again" - Come back down to reality and let me tell you once and for all.
"The universe is hostile. So impersonal. Devour to survive. So it is. So it's always been" - We are only a very insignificant component of a universe that thrives only on destruction. There are no angels in the equation. You are fools to believe so.
I wouldn't say most of his lyrics are meant to be taken as sarcasm. He's said in many interviews that most of his songs are open to interpretation for the listener to decide how they take it in. Some songs not so much. You nailed it on the head with the description of this song.
In this case, I think the sarcasm is not in the fact that he speaks in the first person. In fact this is the element that I find most interesting in the lyrics. He does not pose as someone distant denouncing something immoral, but he makes a criticism from the perspective of someone who also has this tendency within him. The purpose of this song is to draw attention to the fact that this is part of human nature.
Tool is all about interpretation. The fact that it got you thinking means they did their job. They're the best. More please...
I wish rappers cared more about true musicianship.
A lot of them do. I don't consider "radio rappers" to be in the same genre as the type of rappers that I listen to. There are a lot of really talented rappers out there who ARE true musicians and love other genres other than hip hop. Some rappers produce their own music. Play piano, drums, guitar, etc. And those are the ones who are inspired by all types of music.
A solid example of this is the rapper Dave. Check out his performance of “Black” at the Brit Awards. It’ll blow you away
@@MikeTaffet I took your advice and watched Dave at the Brit awards. I have always kept a open mind when experiencing new music and unfortunately I wasn't impressed. The arrangement on piano was elementary to be kind. The cadence in which he rapped was monotonous to say the least. I'm sorry but this and most rap and hip hop and the artists who produce it are not true musicians in the traditional sense. 90% of them can't play any instrument and couldnt tell you the first thing about how to write a song. The record producers and the music industry have fed people this genre ( rap n hip hop) because all it takes is a image not musical talent to produce records. Sorry but is this guy all u have to validate your claim? I'd be interested in hearing some more from someone else. I don't want to give up yet

bro, you immediately got it at the end of the song. Love the way you put it, because it is applicable to all types of tragedy, whether it be gossiping about someone else's tragedy to feel important because you have knowledge other's don't about someone, to freaking full on global conflicts. It's also about how we're drawn to the news every night about some dude who was shot, or some mother who was killed. It doesn't inform us, it doesn't teach us anything we can apply in our daily lives, and it doesn't even affect us because we don't know that person. We don't know anyone who knows that person.
There's something more sinister and complex happening because logically it makes no sense for these kinds of stories to be leading headlines. Although we may feel bad, or sad in the moment for this person, because who wants bad things happening to people. And I'm talking just in general. But that's all it is, it's like a comfortable little vacation into what it might be LIKE to experience this, or know someone who has. We can leave the thought behind immediately, never to come back to us again. Never forming into a painful memory of real loss. I guess it's just flat out interesting to watch, idk I don't watch the news any more.

These lines always get me. Its pretty simple, but also really powerfull at the same time. One of the few songs that make me teary-eyed.
Vicarious itself means living through the experience of others. This song is how we get pleasure watching the tragedy and death of other people on TV and in life in General. Whether on TV or gawking at the car crash on the E-way, we aren't satisfied until we know someone died. And if you say you aren't that way, you are a liar.

You got the meaning right. Basically human's are addicted to violence and tragedy. Though most people do not give in to those violent urges we get our fix by watching all forms of media, news, movies, shows etc. We are drawn to tragedy while living safely in our own world or comforts.
Something to note when it comes to Tool... the band is very much an advocate for humans to be one and not separated or divided. If we can di that we will evolve together and become stronger together as a species.
its a bit of an unpopular opinion, but 10,000 Days is my favourite album from TOOL - if you like what you've heard thus far, check out 'Right in Two' or 'Lost Keys' + 'Rosetta Stoned' although this is two tracks per-se, 'Lost Keys' is like an interlude on the album, and acts as setup for the following song - they should really be heard as one single entity.
I’m certainly a Tool junkie and proud to say it. I love to see first timers experience them, it’s so satisfying. Each of them is extra talented at their specific position in the band and it’s just impossible to go wrong with Tool.

Subbed for more Tool. Just found your channel and enjoyed your reactions. I am glad to see that you are "getting" them. They are the GOAT and the challenge they present to the listener is to be patient, go on the trip, and feel - and ultimately, THINK. Maynard is actually decrying the attitude of the people he's singing about. You were right about the "la la la la la la LIE" - he's hinting that he's not singing about his own attitude towards tragedy, IMHO. But, as always, Tool wants you to apply your own interpretation. They do not insist on one, they want you to think about every song and let your feelings take the message in. They will change your life if you let them. Sorry, I say that all the time because they have done that for me since I first heard the song "Intolerance" back in the day. I have been letting Tool teach me every day (pretty much) since then.
The thing is about tools music, it's not all about listening to the perfect instrumentals, the rhythm, the flow, the lyrics, the meaning, the emotion, or anything that you could humanly quantumfy, it's.... a thing, a fucking thing, there's no rational, artistic or logical explanation to the 'thing' you either absolutely love it, or just simply don't get it..... a thing! and yes 'holy shit, what...' is infact, an exceptional compliment

Seeing tool live is actually one of the best things. They sound so good and its just an overall fantastoc experience. Id recommend it once covid is under control. However they domt tour all that often so if you can go thn you gotta GO

I'd add that he's saying society is addicted to watching violence, and treats it like entertainment, but only when it's happening to someone else. "Much better you than I" are some of the most honest words written in a song, ever!

Best part of Tool is that if you just focus on the lyrics you will be amazed and if you focus on just the instruments and arrangements you will be amazed. Then you sit back and take it all in and get lost in the experience. Listen to Tool's song Aenima for some really savage lyrics. Maynard eviscerates the whole LA/Hollywood lifestyle. It's based on the comedy of Maynard's friend Bill Hicks and his "Arizona Bay" material.
I live in Europe in Poland exactly and I can tell you that it is quite the same. If you watch the news it is like an endless list of calamities - muderers, wars, people getting sick and dying in c-19 times especially. The reason for that is quite straight forward to figure actually - our mindsets are based upon primal survival instinct. Its like we always fight to get by. To my mind Tool's art is about showing how insensible and stupid that is. However, that is not told straight away - one needs to figure this on his own and it is always a subject to interpretation. My favorite Tool's song is Parabola if you would like to check it out sometime.

The thing about lyrics is that whole 10,000 days is an album that is very close to Maynard (the vocalist) and lyrics are twisted, sarcastic and have a personal meaning.
For me I'll vibe to a Tool track for months before cluing into what the song is about. There's usually a surface layer, then a deeper layer, then another layer after that sometimes. Then it's all about the music working with lyrical theme/s. Did ya catch the "Death rattle" mentioned in the song? Did you hear it? 🌀

yeah it can be interpreted as satire about media ect., but the best meaning behind the song I've read is the evolutional desire to survive, observe, learn and emotions following this procces which can be also shame and this explanations makes sence to considering the tool's song writting.. To watch how others dies or get in trouble is the way how we learn to not do the same mistakes, but it leaves us also traumatized. But line Better you than I.. yeah this can be satirical call on whole life.

Tool the lost keys and rosetta stoned. They MUST be played together. They are a suite and must be played as one. Plus lost keys kinda sets the stage for rosetta stoned.

You need to check out right in two as well. But seriously you could put on any tool song and just experience the greatness and enormous attention to detail. If they aren’t perfection they are the band that has gotten closest to being perfect that I know of and music has and always will be an enormous part of my life. They are truly the only band that I can say I have listened to since middle school and no matter what album I put on I listen to from start to finish and it never gets old.

I feel like your interpretation is similar to mine. You'll never find them explaining their songs or lyrics because Maynard, the singer, wants people to interpret them in their own way shaped by their own experiences. This song is pretty easy to understand the meaning to this is pretty blunt for Tool. Wait till you hear forty six and two or Lateralus. Your head will hurt trying to decipher their meaning.

The song is about hypocrisy! We feed off the tragedy of others and we watch vicariously, but when it happens to us we cry why oh why. You got to listen to The Grudge or Lateralus next. Lateralus was written to the Fibonacci sequence, not easy to do. The Grudge sounds incredibly complicated but it's really about letting go. Personally I found most of tool songs and Maynard lyrics Sound incredibly complex but they really have very simple meanings that could be explained in one sentence.

Kurtis, as far as meaning goes, this is about as unnuanced as Tool will get. It's straight forward. However, the underlying theme to all of Tool's (Maynard's) message goes back to 46 & 2--Evolution. Our animal instinct to see carnage, to observe pain, is what holds us back from ascending to a higher level of consciousness. Maynard is calling us out on our baser desire of voyeurism, while pointing out his guilt too. This is what keeps us from becoming...more.
good vid. at some point listen to the whole album from start to finish, to get a bigger picture of what they are trying to say. Its not like they are just random songs put down, there is a kind of feel to the whole album. If you try this, use head phones, turn your phone off to avoid distractions so you can focus on the music. It might take a few full listens to appreciate the depth and layers to the music. The lyrics need to ferment in your head too. Enjoy.
