Gentlemen, much like Tool, you seem to know what you're doing. The only thing Tool fans love as much as the music is new fans discovering them. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Vicariously, we watch your journey.
Wow. I've listened to a lot of reactors and this goes to another level. The fact that you made two obscure yet appropriate references to Simon and Garfunkel is proof to that end.
Vicariously I live while you discover Tool! Please keep the reactions/breakdowns coming, really enjoying hearing all of your thoughts and the connections you make with the lyrics and ideas presented by them. Maynard is known for giving us less than comfortable topics to ponder, with the intention that we'll draw our own connections from them and hopefully use it as motivation for personal growth. Thank you for sharing your interpretations and thoughts with us all!
Descending is special to me. First Jam was played on the 2014 tour. (Debut in Spokane which was my brother and I’s first show together). We went on to see them a dozen times after in multiple states. In 2015, they had progressed the jam some. 2019 Aftershock was the first show after the album dropped. 2 other debut’s (fear Inoc and Pneuma) Come back to Spokane 2020, we got the song in it’s entirety. Which is my favorite from the album. Last year he sadly died of an overdose. Just months before we would see them in Spokane again. Unfortunately I went to the show alone. And as excited as I was for Rosetta, Descending was going to make me cry if they played it. They played it. I rocked THE FUCK out as hard as I could. Tears in eyes. Sound the revile, to be or not to be.
Very refreshing and interesting. Definitely some of the best reaction to TOOL for sure I hope the whole TOOL army comes and supports. I’m sure it’ll be shared in the various fan groups. Maynard has reached out to several reactors , I’m pretty sure he’d like the intellectual conversation being generated
I love your evaluation of the song and ideas people need to hear. Tool Army are very introspective because of the Tool message. The world is a terrible place, what can I do with my thinking and actions that change the world, one life at a time.
Sean’s commentary on how a good chorus finds deeper meaning each time definitely struck me. I’ve somehow never thought about it that way in terms of writing music. I can’t wait for Sean to dive into Schism and Wings for Marie! Also remember this song was released when the Middle East wars were being televised around the clock. I’m a military veteran but even I was ashamed of how much “cheerleading” there was going around this country for complete destruction in Iraq/Afghanistan. That conflict was tragedy on all sides, not the damn Super Bowl.
Sean's energy and analytical excitement are truly infectious! I thoroughly enjoy seeing him experience this music and sinking his teeth into examining it.
LATERALUS LATERALUS LATERALUS. Sir, you are emphatically ready, and will, with certainty, dive deep into a spiraling journey. ....and thanks for the fantastic reactions!

Great deep dive from a unique perspective. This is the first channel that made me eager to see a reaction to Wings For Marie. I bet his take from faith and storyteller would be epic
@@PomadeJam it would almost need a small bit of backstory but maybe you could fill him in post-listen. I’m excited to see it whenever his batteries recharge 😀
@@billguidry387 Yeah, I was debating when to give the backstory and explain the 10,000 hours too. I may ask him if he'd prefer to know more going in or after the listen.
So much things to read in the lyrics and at the same time Tool puts so much in the music. As you said it's not metal, it's visceral music. Art talks to all the senses
I think we have a simultaneous fear of and morbid attraction to death and seeing tragedy once or twice removed from us gives us a dim glimpse into our own future death but at least at this moment we aren’t dead, we have been spared another day; so there is a vicarious thrill in both aspects of viewing tragedy as well as the primordial relief that we weren’t playing the starring role this time.
You guys get it! I’m impressed at the level of understanding by someone hearing any Tool song for the first time. Extremely well interpretation of such complex music & lyrics. Thanx for a great reaction I subscribed for more Tool reactions.
This is fantastic! I dont think I've ever seen a Tool reaction done this way. We have seen all there is to say about the complex time signatures, the production quality, and the process of creating the music but never a real discussion of the lyrical content in relation to the arc of great storytelling over music. Very cerebral and extremely satisfying. Well done!
I love your Tool reactions, they are the ultimate band to geek out on because everything about them is so detailed and amazing on every level and you both totally get it! I agree to wait on The Trinity. He seems interested in the stories the lyrics share. Lots of other great Tool songs have this. Build up to the Trinity.🌀🤘
Next level analysis gentlemen. Appreciate the “thinking” required to look at lyrics from different perspectives. Very enriching. Often info, music passes by us on superficial level without us pulling it in to analyze. Thank you so much.
Wonderful analysis! I recommend The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola (2 tracks meant to be played together, as they reflect a shared musical motif), Schism, Invincible, Descending as good choices for musical masterpieces that tell fascinating stories. Another brilliant piece that doesn’t get enough love, but is full of pure poetry, is Reflection. Enjoy the majesty of Tool! 🌀

I rarely do the L/C/S thing but this is too good not to. The fact that the vast majority of the video is analysis (and good, in depth analysis at that) is such a nice change from people who just listen and then end the video after the song is over. Amazing video and can't wait for the next! Lateralus will blow his mind. Parabol/Parabola is also a good one. Another good couple are Stinkfist and Prison Sex...for a very particular reason. I have no idea if this is true or not but I've heard it said that the reason Maynard uses such "vile" language is to filter out the people who aren't ready for the real message being presented; if you're so turned off by the language that you miss the message, you aren't who this is for as you are also likely so superficial as to miss the forest for the trees.
You absolutely have to react to Wings for Marie 1 and 2…the story is beautiful and I’d love to see Sean break it down. Maybe give him a little context before reacting to the song. Please keep doing these!

I grew up in the Mississippi delta, and always considered led zeppelin to be the greatest band ever. Until tool came along. Maynard is the greatest lyricist ever. Justin replaced the first bassist, and the chemistry this band has is like no other band. Absolute genius. Keep up the good work
I know it's fairly early into the journey, but I must recommend Disposition/Reflection/Triad from Tool's album Lateralus. It was always intended to be a single piece with three distinct movements, but for one reason or another it had to be broken up into three. They are tracks 10, 11 and 12 on the album. It's by far my favorite piece of their music, it has had profound impact on me and who I am constantly working toward being. I wont get into my personal thoughts and theories about it, so as not to influence anything. Just know that, again in my opinion, its the Tooliest Tool Tool ever Tooled. @@PomadeJam IMO those three songs should come later. Keep giving him the story centric songs. D/R/T are more abstract and while they have a story, they aren't as defined "story wise". I personally suggest Lateralus (song) next while giving him a heads up on the Fibonacci aspect.

This song is so relatable with all of the evil shit happening in Gaza right this minute. And that is just the current example of real world horror. There's always another.
I would really love to see you two listen to Tool’s songs Descending together as well as Parabol/ Parabola. From Maynard’s other bands I think it would be amazing if you did A Perfect Circles, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. From Puscifer you two should listen to Galileo, Humbling River, Bread and Circus, Personal Prometheus, Life of Brian, and last but not least Sour Grapes. These songs are a pretty awesome blueprint to better try and understand the mind of Maynard. I would not classify him as a nihilist at all, more of an atheistic existentialist or perhaps an existentialist with a fairly complicated spirituality. PS, I feel a little sheepish presuming anything about Maynard, as he’s said it himself , “all ya know about me is what I sold ya…” Anyway I love your analysis’, and it would be cool to hear a lot more on Maynard’s expanded catalog. Thanks!
@@PomadeJam thanks for being him in to the Tool world. I do believe the band would appreciate his ability to see the complexity in their work and articulate it well to their fan base.
If Sean wants a challenge, the entire album "De-loused in the Comatorium" by The Mars Volta is a "sci-fi" story. It's a "sci-fi" retelling of the demise of Jeremy Ward.

PS, I feel a little sheepish presuming anything about Maynard, as he’s said it himself , “all ya know about me is what I sold ya…”
Anyway I love your analysis’, and it would be cool to hear a lot more on Maynard’s expanded catalog. Thanks!
I agree, those are some grand suggestions.
Wings for Marie part 1 and 2, since he works In the religious realm. Love to know his take.
I think that's a great idea.
@@PomadeJam thanks for being him in to the Tool world. I do believe the band would appreciate his ability to see the complexity in their work and articulate it well to their fan base.
checkin in ...
Just taking a break from watching the news, and murder case videos, to check out some music analysis.
:)
I don’t know why, but this song is pretty much at the bottom of my Tool list. It just never hit me.
The whole song is in 5/4
I can hear that now. Tool seems to like unique signatures.
I feel like 10,000days/Wings for Marie would have made for a much better reaction, but this was cool
That’s coming
Length but very good
Everyone chill. Pushit. It’s Pushit. That’s next.
I'd like to see his take on Ænema, it's even more cynical, somehow, but has an interesting caveat at the end.
Looking fwd to wings/10,000
Coming up
Lateralus next or The Grudge?
hopefully both soon!
TOOL is Progressive Metal....
Do Pushit from Aenima and then follow it with Pushit from Salival
Tool is NOT Your ordinary Metal band ....
Apparently...
you get a like just for not pausing the song. So few people or channels do that.
thanks!
12:50 OK, now I know you have an entirely different concept of "not knowing much about music", LOL.
By the time 10,000 days came out, I was already a "cord cutter" and saw this song as an affirmation for my decision.
tool army est.193...........tool army est.1993..............tool army est.1993...............tool army est.1993..............tool army est.1993
If Sean wants a challenge, the entire album "De-loused in the Comatorium" by The Mars Volta is a "sci-fi" story. It's a "sci-fi" retelling of the demise of Jeremy Ward.
Oooo, that's a great suggestion. Love that album.
