Noob's Guide to Car Engine Types!

- Common Types of Car Engine Configurations explained, like Boxers, Rotaries, Flats, Inline 4's, Straight 6's, V-engines, W-engines, and so forth. I won't be covering any absurd oddities, only the more common ones in this video. Also my voice sucks in this video since I was sick. Anyways, I will be at Indianapolis Cars and Coffee at Gator Motorsport this Saturday on April 7th. If you want to see my car and me or see the other cars or whatever. It's not like I wanted you to see my car anyway...baka. Oh wow, I can't believe I wrote that. That was major cringe. So cringe in fact, that I think I'm going to leave it here in the description so whoever reads it can suffer with me and feel the cringe that I felt whilst reading that myself. Don't do NFSMW2012 Kiddos.

Thanks for mentioning australian muscle, i hardly see them acknowledged
axe hawke I want a Ute so bad
Forgettable Legends we need the ute in the us
Dropped Nation we had two for a while the el Camino and ranchero
In the US we have the Chevy Cobalt SS which is a Holden Commodore with with a Chevy badge on it, and also the "new" Pontiac GTO which is a rebranded Holden Monaro. Those are two Australian muscle cars which have entered the US market under different brand names.
H. Ammar sorry to burst your bubble but the Cobalt has no relation to the Commodore apart from the fact they are both GM.

my dad has an old Jeep CJ7 and is constantly doing all kinds of work on it since before I was born. I don’t have the slightest idea about cars, let alone the inner workings of one but the Jeep is his biggest passion and listening to him explaining whatever it is he‘s currently improving, fixing or working on is one of my favorite things ever. I want to learn about how this stuff works so I can ask actual relevant questions and understand what he‘s talking about when he goes on one of his info dumping rants. This video has been a great introduction to this topic. Thanks for helping me to have more quality bonding time with my dad :)

Speaking of inline engines, it's also worth noting a lot of semi trucks use inline engines. Most of which being straight 6, large displacement diesels. A few honorary mentions in my opinion being the 3406 Cat, Series 60 Detroit Diesel, and the ISX Cummins, which is still in production to this day.
Cumm
I would just lile to add that this is mostly the case gor american semis, in europe they mostly use V engines, usually V8s (i know that you wrote this comment 3 years ago, but it's the youtube algorithm doing its thing of recommending me old videos)

The airplane engines are actually called “radial engines” they were used in WWII too, and are still sometimes used today (I’m also a plane guy)
radial and rotary aero engines are two different engines designs, rotary engine was used during WWI and in 20ties
Ah more people need to see this. I see so many ads for the Trailblazer/envoy that still list it as a V6
One time I saw an ad that listed a Mustang GT with a Flat Plane Crank (like the one in the Voodoo used by the ShelbyGT350). I don't think dealerships actually know how to use real car terms properly. They probably just think they are pretty marketing terms used to make products sound better, but boy do they look stupid when they use it wrong.
Bladed Angel indeed so haha
(Ignore me earlier)
Justin Noker honestly I have a Saab 97-X and whenever I say it’s a 6 cylinder some normie says it’s a V6, when I try to correct them they say that a V4 in their Honda is better anyway
The information you've given has been very beneficial in my knowledge to become a car enthusiast myself. Also your Mustang is the same exact one my older brother has. He's sold it, but it was a fun car. Keep up the good work man 🤟🏾😄
10/10 info thanks! Also thank you so much for including the rotary and especially the RX-7 prototype!
volvo guy here: "BUT MAH INLINE 5..." :D :D great vid, keep it up!
That’s true, I’m a huge fan of the inline 5. Those things are badass, and ROCKED THE RALLY WORLD when it came into production! I’m sure the ones in volvos are as badass as the ones in audis.
6:23 This.
This is why I love Bugatti. VW was able to create a car powered by a quad-turbo W16 engine with a transmission fast enough to handle it while also lasting the life of the car.
I love the Veyron not because its speed and price, but by its engineering. VW had no reason to do it. The Veyron is probably the biggest and most expensive "Because we can." statement on the planet.
This was really informative. I think you did a great job explaining flat vs. boxer engines! Got a new subscriber.

This is good. 5-10% humour and the rest is knowledge. This is good. This is the format to follow.
Fun little fact, Ford Falcon's in Australia, at least the 6 cylinder variant still use the straight 6 layout instead of a V6. Keeping to the original American Falcon engine design while the main competitor, The Holden Commodore also manufactured in Australia was a V6. The same engine used in GM V6 performance vehicles.

The inline 6 is a very prevelant engine in diesel applications. Also, many auto makers used inline 6 engines in their pickup trucks, as they produce great amounts of torque, whilst having less horsepower. The Ford 300 I6 was a great example of this, it had 150 HP, and 300 lb ft of torque.
