It was much easier when carburetors were around.
1 : 2 camshaft and crankshaft ratio was done with 2 gears that meshed together or it might have a short chain rotating them in sequence.
I grew up stacking all kinds of small & big block engines.
Don't even remember how many I've built.
( Gas was 0.75 a gallon back then )
I remember when toilet bowl injection came out and hated it then. Today it's even worse with multi port fuel injection.
More parts = more opportunities to break down.
Offshore we use inboard 2 stroke diesels , 12 cylinders, 71 cubic inches each. ( Detroit Diesel 12/71's & 16/92's ) They don't even have camshafts or timing chain/belts.
Many are both supercharged and turbo combined.
It’s absolutely incredible how a group of minds came together and created this engineering masterpiece.
I was just thinking this. The amount of time and effort it would take to animate this is daunting. You can tell they also took a lot of time to explain it as simply as possible. They chose their words very carefully to be concise yet explanatory.

It's been over a century since the first car was made, nearly two decades since UA-cam was born, and I have never seen such an easy-to-follow video about the engine than this! Brilliant explanation!
Agree! While my friend was telling me about something on his car, I didn’t follow what he meant and he’s like here, I’ll just show you it’ll be easier. I rolled my eyes 🙄 and thought, oh goodie, I can pretend to know while he shows me now…except when he showed me this video, for the first time in 20+years of driving and having a vehicle, I was able to understand, see, and connect what these things were and how they worked together and gave me an idea of how complex a working engine can be, yet how simple it is when you go step by step and see how each part has its place in the whole process. Love this. Thank you!

It’s incredible when you realize that these movements happen so fast in real time that it’s a blur. Not only do these movements have to be extremely precise but they have to happen at thousands of times per minute.

I'm in the beginning of my studies (technical design) and with little to no mechanical knowledge I have struggled with the theory and understanding what I am drawing and why. I don't even own a car! I have watched this video three times now with thought and I am so excited to notice that I am slowly starting to understand! Thank you for your hard work! Makes me want to try modeling a car engine at some point for my portfolio.

Have you heard of this guy "Ismail al-Jazari" during your studies???
It’s hard to believe that engineers came up with this complex design around 1900. So many moving parts to keep in time. It was a basic engine back then but still had a crank and cam and timing components and valves that had to be in time to run. Amazing!

@@dougass6577, you find out what's wrong with it by simply researching about the problem. Then of course, once you've done all that, you learn each time what goes wrong with it. So in short, the more problems one has with their vehicle, the more they know about it, the more they know than anyone else who has a newer vehicle, because some newer ones are less likely to have a problem, and they'll know what's wrong, obviously, doesn't mean to say they can fix it themselves though, that's obviously when a trained engineer comes into it.
I've been in the automotive business for over 40 years. I know all this like the back of my hand.

To me ICE made my brain pump a little bit, because I'm very new to this all. However, upon reading my comment with fresher eyes, I see that I could have come across as being unnecessarily critical of what was a very complimentary post. So I apologise to you ☺️ I'm very interested in engines and mechanics in general, and I've been studying my own car for over a year. I have a copy of the engine in my garage to take apart. Same. My automotive teacher Way of “teaching” is putting all of the information onto a hundred paragraphs per topic for me to cram, and then makes me take a quiz afterwards. How am I supposed to remember that?

Probably one of the worse ever inventions ever for humans. think of the amount of dead lives from accidents (compared to othe formes of transpoort) Add to that the space these monsters take town and cities. Then you have the noise pollution thermal engines create and finally most importantly of all, its signifciant contribution towards global warming. The truth is there were alternatives to transport, but thanks to powerful automotive lobbies (and more importantly oil companies that wanted a market) cleaner alternatives lost out
@@TMGVideoDiaries Completely agree, but you cannot deny how useful they are to humans, less hassle than any other transport. But you could say we focussed development on cars instead of other transport so it could be different today🤷♂️A hell of a lot of fun too
I've seen this video so many times, and just kind of grazed the surface of comprehending how everything functions and getting overwhelmed, taking notes of different parts and components and going away and studying. Today's the first time I've watched it and finally understood and comprehended everything and wow what a great feeling it is. Bit of a slow learner, but getting there gradually and enjoying every step of the way! Thanks for this video it really has helped a lot over my automotive journey, and I feel like if I can learn this, anyone can. So to anyone who's reading this who finds this video daunting. Sometimes you just gotta go back 5-10 seconds to repeat what they said and if that doesn't help, you can either watch a different video or take a break to clear your mind and then watch it later

I wish i could have a video like this way back when I was studying translation. One of the mechanical engineering tests was about the car engine. We usually have to picture in our mind the text but having a visual context is such a tremendous help. Translators today have it so easy.

I don't usually comment but I really have to this time. Out of all the videos out there trying to shed light on something that's probably in most people's minds dark, not one that I watched covered this so well. This knowledge is complicated and takes exhausting effort to grasp in a text book without proper illustration. And not only did you illustrate but also approached this in a way I feel I can open the hood and understand the big picture of what's going on, and all that by sitting back, chilling. Wow. I've been trying to actually UNDERSTAND how an engine works for quite a while now and it's been until I came across this video that I can definitively say I get it. The animation level is insane. How long does it take to make a video like this one?
A couple hundred hours in Blender (my 3D software) alone. The research and script writing is a good 40-60 hours before modeling even begins. It's not the complexity of the model only, but also making sure it's accurate and works how it should. You can fudge things with 2D drawings, but in 3D it has to be the right shape or things won't make contact when they should, etc. It's a real functioning machine, basically.

The amount of work to create this stuff is highly unappreciated, thankyou buddy it's great to see inside machines and how they work ,it really gives an insight into the genius some people possess,
Now just imagine: in real life, everything that you see here in this animation would be going 30-60x faster.

Very well done as usual. One little detail might be the catalytic converter doesn't exactly capture toxic chemicals but convert them into more inert ones using a platinum screen that alters the unburned hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water and nitrogen as if they had burned. It isn't a filter and nothing stays in it. Great job, love these videos!

I'm not that denying some Indian channels don't use sub bots, but not everyone uses it. Most of the channels have high subs because there is just a large audience in India.

Each(petrol)cylinder has a spark plug, fuel injectors, valves, strokes and exaust to let each piston inside a cylinder run through combustion. Piston can't run on it's own, it's the whole engine component (even including fuel tank, exaust pipe, radiator, gearbox, and camshaft's) together working for it to run, so you're very wrong in saying that.
