Same here. The first thing I did after I purchased by brand new ASUS ROG Strix G back in 2019 was perform a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro. After the initial setup all I had to do was download and install all the updates for the OS, apps and drivers, as well as declutter any pre-installed Windows apps that I don't use. Starting from a clean slate makes it much easier to deal with the computer in the long term, as it doesn't tend to misbehave nearly as much.
If you have a USB, that's fine, but it may take some time. Alternatively, if you have OneDrive, you can back everything up from your old laptop, and once it is done, you can sign in on the new laptop, and it should download everything for you
MY first step is to either yank the HD and do a complete "Original system HD image" which I call a "Pre First-boot Backup". The purpose of this is to be sure that if I ever sell it in the future (it could happen!) I can restore the original OEM image, and give the next guy "That fresh out of the box experience." You could also just swap in a fresh HD/SSD, so you don't have to worry about them "restoring your files", or simply so that you still have any files you may have forgotten to back up before the OEM reset. Been doing that for a good 20-odd years now. I've used Macrium Reflect for this for years...boot from a USB stick, do the backup to an external HD, and you're covered.

It's really better to make an installer disk with the media creation tool and do a fresh install of the machine. All that bloatware will leave residu on the system even after removing.
The first thing to do with any new PC if you value your privacy is to remove the biggest malware program ever created and that is Microsoft Windows. In place of it pick any didtribution of Linux. MX Linux or Mint Linux would be good choices.
My new Dell laptop comes with licensed McAfee protection last for a year, so it wasn't a trial or anything. It wasn't heavy or affecting the laptop performance, so by God I just let it be to get my money worth!
The first and last thing you need to do with a new pc, is to install Linux and make it dual boot. Personally I prefer Ubuntu, but that's up to you. Job done!
Why dualboot? Just wipe the full disk while installing linux. By using dualboot you will still keep copy of windows on the harddisk, it's just wasting the disk space and potentially dangerous if you boot into it by accident.
Update to max updates set all to work the way you want tune the graphics to work take all the software you need forever from the internet the unplug the internet and for years work in peace offline until the laptop breaks 👍
not every laptop come with excessive amount of bloatware on them. i bought a Clevo based gaming laptop, and except for the bloatware like candy crush that comes from Microsoft. only other apps were clevo control center and few driver related apps like killer network and creative sound blaster apps. so it also helps if you avoid getting laptops from those big manufacturers, but with those i would probably just reinstall fresh copy of windows.
I like to scan first, using a bootable antivirus. One laptop I bought 20 years ago from a dealer in Manchester was infected. I called them and told them. Looking back perhaps I could have done more, but I don't know what.

Great. Video I too like the windows 7 feel that you give on the tutorial. Don’t plan on gaming but do want to get a decent pc for multitasking. I’d have loads of screens open for sports / UA-cam / word processing would you use a bigger monitor too for more work and visual space. Any suggestions on what minimum specs I’d need ?
Just bought a new laptop, and in the middle of following your instructions, I noticed backlight bleeding in the bottom right, it wasn't there before I even did the LCD test ! What to do now !
I don't really like windows updates to be honest. It messes with my laptop and makes It slower. I had to do a full factory reset on my laptop because of a Windows Update. I simply updated my laptop which for some reason made my laptop really loud. It told me to restart my laptop so I knew It was a big update. I then restarted It and then my laptop was not starting up. There was a blue background and at the top it said "Your PC couldn't start up correctly". I kept restarting my laptop but It didn't work at all. I then tried to do a reset which would keep my personal files but my password was not working, which was not my fault. My password was correct, it was my laptop which wasn't accepting It. This is why I do not like Windows updates. They deliberately slow down your PC so you can buy a new one. It's all business at the end of the day. I would love to permanently stop Windows Update but I don't know how.
long time viewer, thank you for all the great information. Is there a simple way to identify bloatware to insure I done remove any necessary files or applications? Many thanks
I also use SpyBot Anti-Beacon. Shuts down all telemetry. I am shutting down 520 different telemetry points with it. It reverses all Windows Update attempts to turn things back on automatically.

Yes, but it would be a huge waste of money if its strictly used for business applications that don't require the extra power. A gaming laptop/desktop can still do what a regular computer can do. Another downside is the battery life. The battery usually dies quickly in most gaming laptops even if you're not doing any demanding tasks. You'd be lucky to get more than an hour or 2 of battery life.

It's really better to make an installer disk with the media creation tool and do a fresh install of the machine. All that bloatware will leave residu on the system even after removing.
Hybrid on is the less demanding version. Hybrid mode off uses the dedicated GPU.
It is a good idea to keep the software from the manufacturer (Dell, HP, Lenovo) installed.
Yes
The first thing to do with any new PC if you value your privacy is to remove the biggest malware program ever created and that is Microsoft Windows. In place of it pick any didtribution of Linux. MX Linux or Mint Linux would be good choices.
Thanks Brian.
Excellent tips for anyone wishing to setup their newly purchased laptop.
Glad it was helpful!
Him do you review for the legion 5 performance?
Lmao imagine having such a trash laptop that you’re forced to use Linux.
Update to max updates set all to work the way you want tune the graphics to work take all the software you need forever from the internet the unplug the internet and for years work in peace offline until the laptop breaks 👍
@12:18 i would love to see a tutorial of you installing the lite version! and a step by step guide maybe?
1) download and create OS USB
2) wipe OS
3) fresh install OS
Hey thanks for the video, how good is this laptop for a hardcore gamer?
Very good, RTX 3060 so it should be great. I do a review of it.
@@Britec09 legend, thank you
The first thing I do is backup the DriverStore directory. The second thing I do is reinstall Windows.
Thank You...Well done!
Hi i just bought this laptap quick question you can use the laptap evenit is charging or wait for 100% before using it?
Thnks
not every laptop come with excessive amount of bloatware on them.
i bought a Clevo based gaming laptop, and except for the bloatware like candy crush that comes from Microsoft.
only other apps were clevo control center and few driver related apps like killer network and creative sound blaster apps.
so it also helps if you avoid getting laptops from those big manufacturers, but with those i would probably just reinstall fresh copy of windows.
what anti virus app do you recommend?
Thank you so much! Just got my new laptop and this helped alot!
Can i use right away my new laptop without charging it, or need to fully charge before using it?
I'm just a first time user
I like to scan first, using a bootable antivirus. One laptop I bought 20 years ago from a dealer in Manchester was infected. I called them and told them. Looking back perhaps I could have done more, but I don't know what.
What I do to a new laptop:
Reinstall windows without the bloat
Update the OS
Upgrade the RAM
Upgrade the SSD
Install antivirus (AVG)
Nice
What a great video ...
My only problem is that i used my new asus a16 at 20% for its first charging but after that i noticed that a new asus laptop should be charged for 3 hours at first use . Can this cause some problems to this 90wh battery ?
Great review what do you think of laptop coolers ?
Thank you for this great video!
First thing i do is wipe windows and install either Arch Linux or Fedora Linux with with KDE Plasma !!
Thank you. I have the exact same laptop
First step was missed, did you use a windows or microsoft login ?
Thanks for this video.. I'ma buy one now...
LOL i just got a LENOVO Thinkpad THIS WEEK, it replaces one about 10 yrs old that was THE toughest unhardened laptop ive ever owned
Does Open-Shell work in Windows 11 to improve the start menu?
'Re-size the SCOW' - love the accent
Some people are likely not going to like this comment, but the first thing I do with a new laptop is to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. Once the guarantee ends I remove Windows completely. Can’t install Ubuntu? I don’t buy the laptop.
What to do now !
so good very informative video
Glad you think so!
I personally reformat it and reinstalled the fresh OS with the latest update on Windows 11 flash drive.
Nice
Thank you very much for your help 👍🏼
Thank you so very much Brian. I have a new Framework laptop, it doesn't come with bloatware but the other settings I will look at changing.
Glad I could help!
so hybrid mode is Mux switch? i didnt understand that i am new in thios gaming world
Thanks a lot
Many thanks
13:19 What are you referring to here, so I can do some research on it?
I also use SpyBot Anti-Beacon. Shuts down all telemetry. I am shutting down 520 different telemetry points with it. It reverses all Windows Update attempts to turn things back on automatically.
Thank you Brian.
You're welcome
The first thing you should do in my honest opinion is wipe the drive. If you buy a laptop like this might as well do it right.
Thank you Mr. Britec for an informative video. I second a video reviewing this Lenovo laptop and another video advising how to choose a new laptop and what specifications to consider before buying a laptop.
Thanks for the video. Where do you get the script to disable the lock screen?
What defender did you say we should get ??

Hello. Question. Can a gaming laptop be used for business?
Yes, but it would be a huge waste of money if its strictly used for business applications that don't require the extra power. A gaming laptop/desktop can still do what a regular computer can do. Another downside is the battery life. The battery usually dies quickly in most gaming laptops even if you're not doing any demanding tasks. You'd be lucky to get more than an hour or 2 of battery life.
